Thom Zimny’s epic Netflix documentary, Sly, debuted on Netflix this weekend following an excellent run at TIFF. In it, Stallone opens up about his various career highs and lows while also acknowledging some of the personal obstacles he’s had to face. This includes a tense relationship with his often violent father and the tragic death of his son, Sage Stallone.
Zimny, who previously made two great Bruce Springsteen documentaries, Letters to You and Springsteen on Broadway, along with the classic Elvis documentary, Elvis Presley: The Searcher, was gracious enough to sit with us for an epic chat about Stallone’s filmography. As the writer and narrator of Stallone Revisited (I’ve always interviewed him a few times), I like to think I’m a bit of an expert as far as Sly’s life and legacy goes. Plot: The life of Sylvester Stallone, from his humble origins to eventual superstardom.
Review: If you’re a regular visitor to this site, you’ll know many of us here are huge Sylvester Stallone fans. I do a show called Sylvester Stallone Revisited on JoBlo Originals, and interviewing the man was a highlight of my career. As such, it was a thrill that this year’s edition of TIFF paid tribute to my idol by premiering the new doc, Sly, which hits Netflix later this fall. A feature-length account of Stallone’s life and time, the ninety-minute doc, which Thom Zimny directs, definitely serves as an inspiring, respectful account of Sly’s life and times. If you’re looking for dirt, go elsewhere – but if you want a deeper appreciation of the icon’s life as an artist, this is for you.
By this point, Stallone’s rise to fame has become nearly mythological.

Sylvester Stallone is one of the most recognized actors in the industry. His breakout role came in 1976 when he starred in "Rocky," which was such a big hit that it received 10 Oscar nominations and went on to inspire a whole film franchise. It also led Sylvester to land his role as John J. Rambo in 1982 action film "First Blood," which, similarly to "Rocky," resulted in a number of sequels that turned Sylvester into a pop-culture icon. Even decades later, he's still dominating Hollywood with parts in the Creed, Expendables, and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises. However, one of the actor's biggest roles in life is being a father to his five kids.
Sylvester's family is super supportive of his acting career. His wife, Jennifer Flavin, a successful model and entrepreneur, frequently attends Sylvester's movie premieres, and so do the couple's three daughters: Sophia Rose, Sistine Rose, and Scarlet Rose Stallone.

For nearly fifty years, the saga of Rocky Balboa has been one of the most enduring works of American fiction. The powerhouse first movie told the story of a boxing underdog who gets, and makes the most of, the chance of a lifetime, which dramatically paralleled the rags-to-riches story of the film's own writer and star, Sylvester Stallone, a no-name actor who built a blockbuster career out of "Rocky." It was practically legendary from the start, though its massive success was a double-edged sword.
Over the course of four sequels and a spin-off trilogy, Rocky Balboa proceeded to inspire generation after generation with satisfying stories about defying the odds, reclaiming your dignity, and that one time Rocky bought a robot. But there's one film in the series that most people, including Stallone, don't think was a success.
Actually, that's putting it far too mildly. Stallone has gone on record as...

The Rocky movies all started with Sylvester Stallone, which became a cultural phenomenon. It extended into the recent Creed franchise, which stars Michael B. Jordan in the lead role of Adonis Creed. Here’s a look at all Rocky and Creed movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes scores.
‘Rocky V’ (1990) Sylvester Stallone as Rocky | United Artists/Getty Images
Rocky Balboa (Stallone) recently retired, but his accountant landed him into some serious financial troubles. He makes the bold decision to mentor a younger boxer named Tommy (Tommy Morrison). Meanwhile, Rocky tries to improve his relationship with his son, Robert (Sage Stallone).
Rocky V sits at the bottom of all of the movies with 31% on both the Tomato-meter and the audience score. It strives to capture the original film’s spirit, but it falls incredibly short.

Has there ever been a franchise entry more of a cinematic buzzkill than "Rocky V?" I'm struggling to think of one. It's a dour affair compared to the goofy bombast of "Rocky IV" and is generally regarded as the worst film of the original series, but it does have some things going for it. Sylvester Stallone deserves credit for trying to do something different with this one, arresting the out-of-control trajectory of the first four movies by sending his most beloved character back to his roots. If he hadn't, the next logical step would have been for Rocky Balboa (Stallone) to face off against a terrifying alien warrior, but his arch-rival Arnold Schwarzenegger beat him to the punch on that one in "Predator."
Originally intended as the last part of the series, Stallone attempted to steer the Italian Stallion's saga back to the gritty drama of "Rocky." To that end,...

Fans of the franchise mainly hate Rocky V. It took the triumph of Rocky IV and turned it into a tragedy for the Italian Stallion, with him suffering a potentially deadly injury due to his bout with Drago. Wiped out financially thanks to Paulie (who else?), Rocky, Adrian (Talia Shire – in her last entry in the saga) and Robert (Sage Stallone) have to relocate to Philly, where Rocky takes over Mickey’s old gym. There he finds a prospect, Tommy Gunn (the late Tommy Morrison), who he can turn into a contender, only for ego and a Don King-like promoter to get in the way, concluding in a ridiculous street fight. Stallone has slammed the movie over the years, but is it as bad as all that?

Jennifer Flavin is reportedly seeking a divorce from her husband of 25 years, the actor Sylvester Stallone.
Flavin and Stallone first had an eight-year relationship until 1994 when the Rocky star told her he was having an affair with model Janice Dickinson. They later reconciled and married in 1997, but Flavin filed for divorce from Stallone in the state of Florida last week.
Flavin’s court docs reportedly said the marriage was “irretrievably broken,” and also made more serious allegations against Stallone than initial reports that they separated over an argument regarding adopting a rottweiler.
She said that Stallone’s spending caused a “waste of marital assets,” and she can only be “compensated and made whole” if she receives a higher portion of the estate.
Stallone said a statement, “I love my family. We are amicably and privately addressing these personal issues.”
The actor also commissioned a cover-up of a tattoo of Flavin...

Actress Carol Lynley, whose popularity in the 1960s and ’70s grew with films Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree and Bunny Lake is Missing, as well as TV appearances in some of the most watched series of the era while peaking with 1972’s disaster film classic The Poseidon Adventure, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack at her home in Pacific Palisades, CA. She was 77.
Her death was announced by her friend, the actor Trent Dolan.
With a modeling background, Lynley had a few small credits (she was Rapunzel in 1958 on TV’s Shirley Temple’s Storybook) before really making a name for herself that year in James Leo Herlihy’s controversial Broadway play Blue Denim, in which she portrayed a pregnant teenager seeking an illegal abortion. On March 24th, 1975, struggling actor Sylvester Stallone spent his last few dollars to see boxing champ Muhammad Ali fight Chuck Wepner. Thought to be an easy win, Ali surprisingly met his match: a career brawler who was having the fight of his life. Fifteen rounds and an Ali knockdown later, Wepner lost. But the scrappy no name fighter inspired Stallone, who emerged from a twenty-hour writing binge with a screenplay and an underdog character named Rocky Balboa.
The script quickly became a hot property in Hollywood, and several attempts were made to purchase it for stars like Burt Reynolds and Ryan O’Neal. But Stallone refused, knowing full well that no one could play the part like he could. Stallone eventually got his wish at United Artists, and under director John G. Avildsen, the rest became movie history. Released in 1976, Rocky was a global sensation, winning a Best Picture Oscar...

Grindhouse Releasing completes a journey of nearly 20 years with the recent Blu-ray releases of Duke Mitchell's Massacre Mafia Style and Gone With the Pope. Co-founders Bob Murawski and Sage Stallone began this saga back in the mid-'90s with the help of Anchor Bay/Blue Underground head honcho Bill Lustig. That's when they were introduced to the insanity of Massacre Mafia Style, courtesy of a rare VHS copy of a forgotten independent mafia film then titled The Executioner. After using their theatrical distribution arm to give new life to Massacre Mafia Style, Grindhouse began a quest to restore the film to the glory it deserves, and the final product is something quite special. Duke Mitchell's left no real film legacy to speak of until Grindhouse took control...

Shot in 1971, released in 1972, and almost immediately forgotten, Amos Sefer's An American Hippie in Israel was a cult classic just waiting for a rebirth when the film was found by Grindhouse Releasing co-founder, Bob Murawski. Murawski is best known outside of the cult film world as an Academy Award winning editor (The Hurt Locker), but his apparent passion is cultivating a new crowd for lost classics like this film. Through the creation of Grindhouse Releasing with the late Sage Stallone, Murawski has helped to put films like this, Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, and the unique, indiosyncratic oeuvre of Duke Mitchell (Massacre Mafia Style, Gone with the Pope) back on cinema screens where they belong for nearly 20 years. An American Hippie in Israel is...

Those groovy exploitation dealers at Grindhouse Releasing are finally releasing Duke Mitchell’s Gone With The Pope. I have been waiting to see this film for some time and missed the only theatrical showing in St. Louis because it was shown at a different theater on the same nights I did a Late Nite Grindhouse show 5 years ago. This is awesome news for fans coupled with the release of Duke Mitchell’s later film, Massacre Mafia Style, hitting Blu-Ray later this month.

Grindhouse Releasing, the company founded by Academy Award winning editor Bob Murawski and the late Sage Stallone has announced that they will be releasing Blu-ray versions of both Cannibal Holocaust and The Beyond. This news is huge for not only Blu-ray collectors, but Ital-horror fans in particular. Grindhouse, led by Murawski’s attention to detail and quest for excellence, is known for putting out the most high quality of transfers. Censorship standards have become looser over the years in some ways but much stricter in others. Some types of violence and nudity are easier to get away with – for example if one can prove that it’s being done in a comedic or satirical fashion, it is more likely to be allowed. But if the violence is exploitative or too realistic, it is an entirely different story. There are films from years past that got away with extremely brutal, realistic, graphic acts of violence and or exploitative nudity that would very likely raise more than a few red flags by today’s standards. With that in mind, we have put together a list of five titles that would likely never be released today!

Last year saw the unfortunate passing of one of Grindhouse Releasing’s original founders: Sage Stallone. It was a huge loss for fans of exploitation and cult cinema as Sage was an advocate of uncovering lost films from the 70′s and 80′s and restoring them for new audiences to discover. Sage worked alongside Bob Murawski, a frequent collaborator with Sam Raimi and co-founder of Grindhouse Releasing. Thanks to their hard work and dedication genre fans were treated to releases of Cannibal Holocaust, Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, and the entertaining and gory slasher Pieces. These are just a few of the many titles the duo resurrected that Destroy the Brain’s monthly program Late Nite Grindhouse were able to show in 35mm over the years. How tragic. More details are trickling out regarding the sudden death of the Kris Kross rapper, and the police report claims that he had been using drugs the night before he died on May 1. Chris was 34 years old.
Whenever a young person passes away, you hope that drugs or some other foul play isn’t involved. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case for Chris Kelly, the rapper from the famed duo Kris Kross who was found unconscious in his Atlanta, Ga. home and later died in an Atlanta hospital on May 1.
Chris Kelly Used Cocaine & Heroin
Chris had used a combination of cocaine and heroin just one night before his death, according to the police report obtained by TMZ. Early on May 2, Fulton County police also hinted that Chris’ death may have been influenced by drugs.
“It appears it may have been a possible drug overdose,” Corporal Kay Lester told the AP.

Years ago, Sylvester Stallone paid off his half-sister, Toni-Ann Filiti, to keep quiet over her allegations that the actor had abused her for years.
Documents obtained by the New York Post show that in 1987 the action star agreed to give Filiti $12 million plus an additional $16,666.66 per month for the duration of her lifetime, with a $50,000 a year trust for psychiatric and medical expenses.
According to the papers, the actor's late half-sister, who died in August from lung cancer, “asserted claims for personal injury, including physical injury” against Stallone, who denied and continues to deny all her claims. Sources told the Post that the star was a victim of blackmail -- a claim that is being backed up by the actor and Filiti's mother, Jacqueline Stallone.

Did you ever do a soap opera?
About five soap operas were written for me over my lifetime that I know about. I had to turn them all down. I said, "I can't remember those lines. It would kill me." I had to turn them all down. As I turned them down, friends of mine took the parts and within about two weeks most of them were in the hospital. That's how tough it is to go into soap operas. You have to have a phenomenal kind of memory. Jim Drury has one. Barry Sullivan had one. My wife had one. There are many people who are actors, good actors, who have photographic memories. They look at a page and it's, "Okay, let's shoot it". They are literally that fast. I can't do that. So I had to do it the hard way and it was really hard on me.

The big story
The death of Green Mile star Michael Clarke Duncan on Monday sparked off an unexpectedly widespread reaction; the big, genial actor was held in high esteem by his peers and the film world was shocked by his early demise, at only 54. Though it's fair to say Duncan's impact as an actor had diminished of late, the response demonstrated the enduring power of cinema stardom. Though he only had a single really successful role - that of the convict with extraordinary healing powers, in a Stephen King's adaptation – and that well over a decade ago, its impact ensured that Duncan was elevated permanently in the public's affection. He never had another role to match it (a couple of comic turns in action movies like Armageddon and Daredevil aside), but all of Hollywood felt his loss.

Back in July, the 36-year-old son of Sylvester Stallone was found dead at his apartment in Hollywood. At the time, it was believed that Sage Stallone passed away due to an overdose of pills, which were found at his home. It was also unclear whether his death was a suicide or accidental. And now, according to the La Country Coroner, Sage's death was accidental. The report says no drugs were found in his system and that he actually died from a heart attack. The coroner said that there was clear evidence of heart disease. Sage made his acting debut opposite his father in "Rocky V," playing the role of Rocky's son Robert Balboa. He appeared with his dad again in "Daylight," and went on to direct, produce and write. And just a few weeks after Sage's death, Sylvester Stallone's 48-year-old half-sister Toni Ann Filiti passed away from lung cancer.

Son of Rocky actor Sylvester Stallone had coronary heart disease and trace of sedative in body was insignificant
Sage Stallone, the son of actor Sylvester Stallone, died of a heart attack and a toxicology report showed no signs of excessive drug use, the Los Angeles coroner's office has said.
Stallone, who died at age 36 on 13 July, suffered from coronary heart disease caused by atherosclerosis, which brought on the heart attack, Fred Corral of the coroner's investigative division said.
"There were no signs of an overdose. It was just a natural death," Corral said.
Stallone had a small amount of the sedative hydrocodone in his body, Corral said, but it was an acceptable level and one that could be found from taking over-the-counter pain medication. No other drugs surfaced in the toxicology report.

Sage Stallone's cause of death has been the subject of scrutiny and investigation since he was found dead in his home on July 13, but now TMZ has obtained the L.A. County Coroner's report which states the 36-year-old actor died from a heart attack.
Coroner Chief Craig Harvey told the Los Angeles Times that Stallone died of natural causes and the toxicology test came back "negative except for a sub-therapeutic level of hydrocodone," -- though the drug played no role in his death.
According to Harvey, Sage was a heavy smoker and the habit likely helped contribute to his death, as smoking is one of the chief causes of heart disease due to elevated blood pressure, increasing the risk of clots.
