1989’s The Trial of the Incredible Hulk was a made-for-television movie that served as a backdoor pilot for a Daredevil television series. The film also introduced viewers to Matt Murdock / Daredevil and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin. However, before they could go on to headline their own series, plans were scrapped for an unexpected reason.
Rex Smith as Daredevil in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk
According to actor Rex Smith, who played Daredevil in the movie, there was every intention for the backdoor pilot to expand into a television series. However, these plans never materialized because of another network’s rival series and the spotlight cast upon it. Here is how a planned 90s Daredevil series was canceled because of a DC show.

Marvel writer Dan Slott is right. Street Hawk was awesome. And sadly, criminally ignored within the pantheon of TV action shows.
1984 was a golden year for the creation of genuine pop culture phenomena. While Ghostbusters, Gremlins and The Karate Kid debuted in cinemas, on television, Knight Rider and The A-Team were at the height of popularity. Following a successful launch for the helicopter-themed Airwolf early that year, networks jostled for the next big thing, and had everything had gone to plan, Street Hawk would have broadcast in the fall of ’84. Mike Myers is back—and there's more than enough of him to go around. His new Netflix series, The Pentaverate (premiering May 5), follows a secret society of five men called the Pentaverate that has been influencing world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347. "As this new series begins, one unlikely Canadian journalist finds himself embroiled in a mission to uncover the truth and just possibly the world himself," according to the streamer. Myers, of course, plays the journalist—along with seven other characters, including New England conspiracy theorist Anthony Lansdowne, far-right radio host Rex Smith, the Pentaverate's oldest and highest-ranking member Lord...

Comedy legend Mike Myers is back at it again, this time portraying eight different characters in the new Netflix limited series “The Pentaverate.” The show, from the mind of Myers, is based on a joke from his 1993 romantic comedy,“So I Married an Axe Murderer.”
In that film, Myers also played multiple roles, including not just the lead character, Charlie Mackenzie, but his father, Stuart. It’s Stuart who explains the Pentaverate as a nefarious secret society. Here’s the relevant quote:
Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it’s a well-known fact, Sonny Jim, that there’s a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

After 105 years as the Cleveland Indians, the MLB team unveiled a new name Friday, the Cleveland Guardians, to sighs of relief from fans ready to leave the culturally insensitive branding in the past - but mostly to “Guardians of the Galaxy” jokes.
The Ohio MLB team announced its name change in a slick new promotional video that featured narration from Tom Hanks and a score courtesy of the Black Keys. In addition to the name, the organization also introduced a new logo, a baseball flanked by a G with a pair of wings. The video's sincere tone was undercut by one big elephant in the room though. Actually, make that one big anthropomorphic tree.

All Aubrie Sellers wants for Christmas is to beat her family in a game of “Nertz.”
Work commitments mean the singer-songwriter is hosting Christmas in L.A. this year instead of going to see the family in Texas, but despite the location change, some traditions will stay the same.
“Everyone cooks and we play a lot of music and have guitars all over the house,” she says, over the phone in Los Angeles on a recent afternoon, “but what we really love is playing games.”

The weekend of November 10th-11th saw some of team Nerdly make the 3-hour trek up to Edinburgh for the inaugural Comic Con Scotland event which, given the guest list, had also been dubbed “For the Love of 80s.” Not really surprising also given that this convention was put on by the folks at Monopoly Events – who also run For the Love of SciFi and For the Love of Horror out of Manchester’s Bowlers Exhibition Centre.
The big draw for this event was the plethora of 80s superstars who were in attendance: Lou Ferrigno, David Hasslehoff, Streethawk’s Rex Smith, Dirk Benedict, Gremlins’ Zach Galligan, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Ray Parker Jr. who wrote the theme tune for Ghostbusters, and many more. Clarissa Explains It All premiered in March 1991, meaning that this month it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Yep, if Clarissa Darling were around today (and had been aging in real-world time since the show first debuted), she'd be 38 years old, maybe even with a 13-year-old Clarissa of her own.
It's not just that the Melissa Joan Hart sitcom was a popular show for pre-teen girls or even pre-teens in general; it's that it helped established a network identity for the channel it was on, a still-young Nickelodeon, and helped shape a lot of similarly focused shows that aired throughout the rest of the '90s.

We’re currently in a boom period for superhero films, with plenty more on the way. It’s the golden age for comic book fans. Characters like Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange and the Justice League are all coming to theaters, joining established franchises like Thor and Captain America. But some of you may not know that these characters all had live-action movies made about them before. Cinelinx looks at 7 obscure super films you probably haven’t seen.
#1. Doctor Strange: In 1978, a two-hour made-for-tv movie aired about the master of the mystic arts. Dr. Strange was meant to be a pilot for a proposed weekly CBS TV series. Peter Hooten played Doctor Strange and Jessica Walters played villainess Morgana Le Fey. CBS was already airing Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk and was trying to go for the hat trick, bringing the Doc to TV. However, it was not to be.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

Joss Whedon's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." may be the latest live-action Marvel TV series to sweep the nation, but it is by no means the first. In the late '70's, families would gather around their televisions every Friday night at 9 P.M. to watch a show featuring everyone's favorite not-so-jolly green giant. Starring the likes of Bill Bixby (as Dr. David Banner) and Lou Ferrigno (as the Hulk), "The Incredible Hulk" has garnered a loyal following of fans throughout the years.
In fact, "The Incredible Hulk" was so successful that recently there has been talk of a re-imagined take on the series, helmed by the great Guillermo del Toro. However, with promotion for "Pacific Rim" now underway and huge films such as "Pinocchio" and "Justice League Dark" currently on his plate, it doesn't seem like del Toro will be getting to this passion project anytime soon.

Chicago – Two performers who made their marks during the latter days of the 1970s, and into the ‘80s are singer/actor Rex Smith and adult film star Seka. Even though they took different roads in their show business journey, they both were notable around the same time.
Rex Smith and Seka appeared at the Hollywood Celebrities & Memorabilia Show (now called “The Hollywood Show”) in 2011, and HollywoodChicago.com sent photographer Joe Arce to take some Exclusive Photos, and they both sat down for interviews about their different but era-intersecting resumes.
Rex Smith, Singer of “You Take My Breath Away”
Rex Smith is familiar to anyone who remembers the summer of 1979, when his pop hit “You Take My Breath Away” peaked at number 10 on the Billboard charts. The song originated in a TV movie called “Sooner or Later,” in which Smith also starred. His follow-up 1981 hit was a duet – “Everlasting Love” with...

Marvel has made no secret of its strategy for big-screen adaptations of its iconic titles.
Solo releases for Iron Man, Thor and Captain America are paving the way to its ensemble epic The Avengers. Beyond that, there is a third Iron Man on the calendar, an Iron Fist film being scripted and several other possibilities such as Doctor Strange in the pipeline.
But that's not the total plan for live-action projects. The studio also has its sights set on beaming superheroes into your living room.
Marvel's TV division is developing a new Incredible Hulk series with ABC. No word yet on whether it will feature Mark Ruffalo, who will play Bruce Banner - and motion-capture the monster himself - in The Avengers.
The first attempt at bringing the jade giant to TV saw Bill Bixby portray Dr David Banner (that's right, David not Bruce) and bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno...

I am the very model of a modern Major-General or at least that.s what I sing when prancing around the M&C offices. This Gilbert and Sullivan production had all the hallmarks of making a hit, but events conspired against it. Frederic (Rex Smith) was apprenticed in his youth to the Pirate King (Kevin Kline) until his 21st birthday. This was all a case of mistaken apprenticeship since his father actually said .pilot. as the preferred occupation and his hard-of-hearing nanny Ruth (Angela Landsbury) heard .pirate.. Nevertheless, the nanny set out to sea with her charge. The birthday that signifies Frederic.s freedom from apprenticeship has arrived, but he has troubling news for the Pirate King. He.s going to...

Hamsterdam, MD - News at 4:20. As part of the celebration for the upcoming season of Weeds, Glick University polled over 4,000 Americans about what TV News personalities they wanted to see get high during a broadcast.
Naturally there were ground rules including the disqualifications of news organizations that contain notorious on air potheads. This meant no votes were collected for the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert Report and Fox and Friends. You think Steve Doocey is sober? Hard to think that any of those folks have eyes that aren’t pied 24-7.
10, Bill O’Reilly (Fox News) had a lot of folks who reacted that it’d be like, “Dude, I’m getting high with dad.” Of course this initial elation is cut down with the horrifying fact of “Dude, I’m getting high with dad and it’s just not someone I need to party with.”

Long before he slipped into ER scrubs, women wanted George Clooney. We admittedly have no idea what's going on in this clip from the 1985 series Street Hawk, out Tuesday on DVD, because we never watched the show (though neither did a lot of people, considering it only lasted one season). But we can promise you the thrill of watching a twentysomething Clooney lose at arm wrestling but then outperform Street Hawk himself, Rex Smith, when it comes to charming the ladies. Alas, the Oscar winner is nowhere to be found on the bonus commentary, but Clooney's hair and that soundtrack is bonus enough in our book.

Back in 1985, ABC aired an action series called Street Hawk. The TV show revolves around public relations cop Jesse Mach (Rex Smith) who gets recruited for a top secret government project -- piloting a high-tech and incredibly fast motorcycle. Norman Tuttle (Joe Regalbuto) is the cycle's inventor and the only one who knows that Mach is actually the mysterious Street Hawk. Other recurring characters are played by Richard Venture, Jeannie Wilson, Raymond Singer, and R.J. Adams
Despite running for just one short season, Street Hawk has attracted a cult following. Smith says he still gets stopped by "men of a certain age" and thinks it's time for a new version.
He recently told the Daily Record, "I am currently developing a script for a new re-envisioned Street Hawk along with my oldest son Brandon, called Street Hawk Resurrection."

The Sound of Music, the perennial favorite about a problem named Maria, graces the Ogunquit stage from June 30 through July 24. This final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein stars the multi-talented veteran of stage and screen, Rex Smith as Capt. von Trapp. Smith started his career as a "teen idol" heartthrob with the platinum album hit "You Take My Breath Away," then made his stage debut on Broadway at the height of his popularity as Danny Zuko in the original production of Grease. He captivated both critics and audiences and received the Theater World Award for his memorable portrayal of Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway. Other starring roles on Broadway include Grand Hotel, Sunset Boulevard, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Annie Get Your Gun and Kiss Me Kate as well as many television and film roles.

Forget Pirates of the Caribbean. Forget musicals like My Fair Lady. My favorite swashbucklers don't have an Aerosmith swagger or terrible speech troubles. They hold their own against the very model of a modern major general. In 1980, theatrical producer and creator of the New York Shakespeare Festival Joseph Papp brought Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance to the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. It was so popular that it ended up making its way to Broadway, won a bunch of Tony Awards, sailed away to London, and then got turned into the film in 1983.
The movie starred Kevin Kline, Rex Smith, Linda Ronstadt, and Angela Lansbury, and detailed the life of Frederic (Smith), a boy who was supposed to become a pilot, until his hard-of-hearing nurse (Lansbury) misheard her instructions and apprenticed the kid to a pirate (Kline). On his 21st birthday, he's finally released, and soon falls for...
