While DreamWorks released the first official look at Daniel Day-Lewis in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln earlier this week, I'm told a trailer is still a ways off. So, as we inch closer to the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, the awards season is only beginning to rev its engines, which is why updates are few and far between for the time being. Yet, there have been a couple of news bits to share, the first being the announcement Robert Zemeckis' new film Flight will have its world premiere when it serves as the closing night film at the New York Film Festival on October 14. The film stars Denzel Washington as an airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, but after doing so questions concerning who's at fault begin to percolate. I've seen some including Flight in their Best Picture predictions as a potential contender and...

There was quite a broad range of movies out last week with Aardman’s The Pirates: In an Adventure With Scientists arguably the biggest hitter of the lot. Into the Abyss and The Island President were two wildcard documentary options and Streetdance 2 was the obvious choice for anyone who likes dancing, streetdancing to be precise.
By all accounts Wrath of the Titans was as expected, marginally better than Clash of the Titans but still nothing to write home about, while Breaking Wind was every bit as awful as you might expect.
This time out there’s a family fairy story , a couple of gung-ho action thrillers and a timely release of a legendary anti-war film. Oh, and a little film some of you may remember about a leaky boat and a doomed romance is back in cinemas, this time in 3D.

Sean Penn stars as a 50-something Goth in director Paolo Sorrentino’s English language film, This Must Be The Place. Here’s Michael’s review...
First up, here’s a musical fact. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) by The Talking Heads is the best song ever written. Maybe it’s the synth bassline and brittle guitar part, circling around each other in an endless loop. Or maybe it’s David Byrne’s yelping, meandering vocals, bleating non-sequitur-laden platitudes. Whatever it is, whether you’re listening to the lazy groove of the studio version, from their 1983 breakthrough album Speaking In Tongues, or gawping at Byrne dancing with a lamp in the concert movie Stop Making Sense, there’s something utterly beguiling about that tune.
For his first English-language film, Il Divo director Paolo Sorrentino has not only pilfered the song’s title (sans the parentheses), but also brought in...

Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place "stars Sean Penn — an amalgam of Dorothy Michaels from Tootsie, the Cure's Robert Smith, and the titular mentally challenged man the actor played in I Am Sam — as Cheyenne, a fey, retired goth rock star who leaves his home in Ireland to return to the Us to track down the man who tormented his estranged father in Auschwitz. Unbearably sentimental — one colleague likened it to this year's Life Is Beautiful — and consistently ridiculous, Sorrentino's movie was inexplicably met with warm applause (and, as far as I could tell, no boos). There's no arguing taste (or cultural differences or festival exhaustion), but figuring out the appeal of a film that includes a Holocaust slide show, Penn's aggressive scenery chewing ('Not having kids has really, really screwed me over!' he weeps at one point), and every lazy American stereotype (fatties, guns,...
