Lyricist and composer Paul Williams will be honored by the 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors awards with the 2023 Icon award at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on March 5. The awards show will also be posthumously honoring former Sony Pictures Entertainment senior VP and music supervisor, Pilar McCurry.
Williams’ standards have been recorded by such decorated artists as Ray Charles, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, the Carpenters, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross and Willie Nelson, among others. He’s previously been recognized with six Oscars, nine Grammys, six Golden Globes, and two Emmy nominations.
“There is a strange, beautiful alchemy, that occurs when the perfect song placement transforms
both the scene and the song,” said Williams in a news release. “I have been graced with many opportunities to write music for picture in my career, and it feels like magic every single time.

Oscar balloting for the final five nominees in the song and score categories begins March 5. But none of the music supervisors that worked on those movies will get to vote. That’s because the Academy music branch, which chooses the nominees, bars music supervisors — the people who advise and collaborate with filmmakers on songs and other musical matters — from membership.
It’s been a longstanding rule for the branch, which consists of approximately 375 composers, songwriters and music editors. Their argument has always been that membership is limited to those who actually create the musical material that goes into a movie.
“The sense that we don’t contribute creatively to telling stories with music is not an argument that holds water,” says Joel C. High, president of the 500-member Guild of Music Supervisors. “We want to be sitting at the table with our music peers.”
This issue has rankled the music-supervision community for years.

Tim Cappello — aka the Sax Man from Joel Schumacher’s 1987 film “The Lost Boys” — only met Joel Schumacher two times. But the musician has fond memories of shooting the boardwalk concert scene with the director, who died Monday.
Cappello’s scene in the cult classic movie is just under two minutes long as the muscular, shirtless sax player performs the song, “I Still Believe” to a group of Santa Cruz, Calif. locals. The boardwalk is teeming with vampires during the scene where Jason Patric’s Michael first spots Jamie Gertz, who plays the mysterious Star.
“Oh man, I didn’t know. I’m so sad that I’ll never get to see him again,” says Capello. “I always thought I’d get to have one more conversation with him, he was such a fun guy to shoot the s–t with, such an interesting, knowledgeable, funny guy.”

The title of the just-completed documentary “Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time” reflects the subject’s lament that there aren’t enough hours in the day or days in the year for all the music that needs to be made. That desire to stretch the clock might seem hyperbolic coming from other musicians, but not for someone whose hats have included film and TV scorer, concert performer, producer and jazz label mogul, often all at once.
At a post-screening Q&A in Santa Monica this week, the great jazz bassist Marcus Miller spoke about being a youthful protege and watching Grusin casually change hats mid-day… and assuming that was normal.
“I started playing with Dave Grusin when I was 17, 18 — I don’t know how old, but I know I had braces,” Marcus laughed. “To see him run a session, and then know that he’s going to score a movie that night after the session…...

Composer and lyricist Marc Shaiman will be honored with the Icon Award at the 9th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, taking place Feb. 13 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.
The “Hairspray” and “Smash” tunesmith will be performing “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” the “Mary Poppins Returns” ballad he co-wrote with Scott Wittman, at the ceremony. “Lost Things” is nominated for a best original song Oscar, and he’s also up for composing the score for the Disney sequel. Winning either would give Shaiman an Egot, since he already claims an Emmy, Grammy and Tony.
Also performing at the show is former Oscar nominee Aimee Mann, who’ll sing “Drive,” a song from “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” that’s up for a guild award in the best song for TV category. Lukas Nelson, one of the main musical forces behind “A Star Is Born,” will...

Goldfinger. GoldenEye. The Man with the Golden Gun. The world's most famous Martini drinker (shaken not stirred, naturally) has long been synonymous with that most precious and coveted of metals, but given his illustrious half century on the cinema screen there's one area in which gold has eluded him time and again – the Oscars.
Prior to last year's Skyfall (2012) the fifty year old, 24 movie series had garnered just nine nominations, two of which bagged 007 a statue at the 1965 Academy Awards for different films. The Best Effects, Sound Effects award was given to Norman Wanstall for Goldfinger (1964) and John Stears walked off with the Best Effects, Special Visual Effects Oscar for Thunderball (1965).
Though U2 were second choice for the job after the Rolling Stones had turned down a request to come up with a song, Bono was particularly pleased to land the gig as he'd spent his honeymoon at Ian Fleming's house in Jamaica.
