May 11, 1994 saw the release of Alex Proyas’ The Crow, and cinema was never the same. And now, 30 years later, we’re finally being treated to the definitive version on 4K Uhd. You know what big fans of physical media we are here at JoBlo so we’ve been highly anticipating this release. And we also Looooove The Crow. We’ve covered it on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube Channel and have even taken a look at its terrible sequels. Heck, I’m not sure about you guys but The Crow was one of those films I always loved to talk about on the old JoBlo forums. I wonder what they’d be saying about the new film?
And shoutout to those that were able to snag the very cool Steelbook that went quickly out of print. It’s easily one of the coolest Steelbooks out there and features an absolutely beautiful design.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, and the opening sequence of Pitch Black, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a moment from the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here) – which isn’t just getting a 4K release for its 30 anniversary. It’s also getting a remake.

Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.
Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

Whoever wins, we lose. When Disney wins, however, everyone loses.
/Film reported back in May of 2023 that Disney, as part of its massive acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, had inherited an already-complete 10-episode anime TV series based on the nerd-sating "Alien vs. Predator" series. The show's existence was confirmed by Joshua Izzo, the former director of licensing at 20th Century Fox, on the "Perfect Organism" podcast. Izzo said that the 10-episode series was complete, but that it was locked in a vault at Disney, hidden from public view. This is a common practice during mergers and management changes. The new administration as a film studio or record label, wanting to work solely on their own projects, will often shelve the previous administration's projects as a mode of keeping the slate clean. This means a lot of excellent art has never seen the light of day, or was released with so little fanfare,...

Alcon Publishing, the book unit of the production entity behind films and series like Blade Runner: 2049 and The Expanse, is expanding its relationship with Titan Books.
Starting in 2023, the two companies plan to commission original fiction across several genres. Titan Books will publish the titles and Penguin Random House will distribute in North America.
Alcon Publishing, led by the company’s director of publishing, Jeff Conner, launched an existing co-venture with Titan in 2018, leading to comics, graphic novels and art books based on specific Alcon properties.
Under the expanded agreement, four new original titles are currently in the works. The first novel slated for release next March is Suborbital 7 by John Shirley, a book the companies describe as “a military techno thriller.” Plans call for two to three novels a year from the collaboration, and Titan and Alcon plan to reveal additional details soon about those projects.

It’s a Cold War thriller in the steamy tropics! The Reds are making their move in Malaya and four vibrant people are caught in the crosshairs: rich rubber planter William Holden, revolutionary strategist Tetsuro Tanba, peaceful teacher and activist Capucine, and adventurous Governor’s daughter Susannah York. Director Lewis Gilbert keeps a rickety script on its feet drama-wise and superb cinematography (Freddie Young) and impressive music (Riz Ortolani) do the rest. The show ended up being most noted for a nude swimming scene scooped in the pages of Playboy.

A brief history lesson, if you’ll indulge me.
Far from arriving fully-formed in 1984’s ‘Neuromancer’, the sci-fi subgenre now dubbed ‘Cyberpunk’ was not was a melting pot of ideas first developed by writers such as Philip K. Dick, Jg Ballard and Harlan Ellison. Projecting their paranoia of capitalist enterprises gaining more and more control over our lives and sedating any resistance through ubiquitous cheap sex and chemically distraction. The aesthetic elements-dense cityscapes covered in neon, integrated Western & Eastern cultures-were drawn from Japanese Cyberpunk, influenced by the country’s urban architecture and culture. All of which proved appealing to a young jobbing writer named William Gibson.
Gibson had been immersed in the counterculture scene since his late teens. He took mind-altering substances, sold drug paraphernalia and became close friends with punk musician John Shirley. Shirley encouraged his then-nascent writing and the result was 1986’s ‘Burning Chrome’ demonstrating the purest distillation...

The tragic history of The Crow helped usher in a quarter century of comic book movies.
On May 13, 1994 The Crow, based on the comic book by James O’Barr, was released. At the time, comics-based movies -- the superhero variety or otherwise -- were in a slump. After the initial excitement following the massive success of Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989, that series had taken a darker turn with 1992’s Batman Returns, and the corresponding dip in box office had Warner Bros. Pictures preparing a far more kid-friendly and garish Batman Forever for 1995.
The Superman franchise had died a more gruesome death than even Doomsday itself could bestow with 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and as a result Krypton's last son lay dormant in re-development hell. As for iconic publishers like Marvel…let’s just say that the bargain-basement Captain America (1990) and the TV quickie...

John Shirley is a critically acclaimed cyberpunk, sci-fi and horror writer, writing titles such as City Come-Walkin' and Dracula In Love, as well as the first screenplay of The Crow. He has also written many tie-ins including Constantine and Doom. His short story collection Black Butterflies won a Bram Stoker, the International Horror Guild Award and was one of the Publisher’s Weekly best books of 1998. With the Bioshock movie trapped in development hell and Rapture being left in the briny deep for the unfriendly skies of Bioshock Infinite, what's a fan to do with a lingering hunger for undersea objectivism, psychotic Splicers, and brutish Big Daddies? Well, a good start would be Bioshock: Rapture, the prequel novel from Tor Books. More after the break. The novel is written by John Shirley, who won a Bram Stoker Award for his book Black Butterflies, and who co-wrote the screenplay for The Crow. From the look of the excerpt over at the Tor website, the novel concerns itself with the early days of Rapture and the events that led up to the game series. Edgar Allan Poe's Ligeia recently played at the 18th Annual International Film Festival and will likely make further festivals until releasing in 2010 (a prediction). Distribution is being handled through Darclight Films and Ligeia stars Wes Bentley (Ghost Rider), Eric Roberts (The Steam Experiment), Michael Madsen (The Killing Jar) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The film involves trapping the souls of the living in vessels to achieve immortality. A dark and twisted tale, the trailer for Ligeia can be found below with a synopsis until an official release date is found.
A synopsis for Ligeia here:
"Based on the classic Edgar Allan Poe short story Ligeia, the film is about a young, successful writer and scholar, Jonathan Merrick, who happens to fall under the spell of the bewitchingly, irresistibly beautiful Ligeia. Ligeia knows that she will die of a rare cancer and has decided to fight death by using her mystic powers to...

Our five-part Halloween Week retrospective on "The Crow" continues, celebrating the film's 15th anniversary with cast and filmmaker interviews that explore its origin and legacy. Check back each day this week for another installment of our "15 Years Of Devil's Night" series.
Part Three: The Skull Cowboy Speaks! The Crow'S Lost Character.
By Ryan J. Downey
The Skull Cowboy appears in James O'Barr's comics and nearly made it into "The Crow." An other-worldly guide for Brandon Lee's resurrected avenger Eric Draven, the mysterious figure would have provided a great deal of the film's exposition, setting up the "rules" of the afterlife and Draven's mission.
The character, portrayed under heavy prosthetics by actor Michael Berryman ("The Devil's Rejects," "Weird Science," "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"), can be glimpsed in a deleted footage montage on the collector's edition DVD of "The Crow" and longer scenes, including one with dialogue,...

Part Two: Johnny Depp? Christian Slater? Bon Jovi?! Casting Eric Draven
By Ryan J. Downey
Before "The Crow," Brandon Lee's biggest role was in "Rapid Fire," an above-average action flick carried mostly by his grace, charm and combination of various martial arts styles years before the phrase "Mma" was popularized. His other credits included "Showdown in Little Tokyo" opposite Dolph Lundgren, little seen low-budget foreign action flicks "Laser Mission" and "Legacy of Rage" and the televised "Kung Fu: The Movie," with David Carradine.
Brandon dropped nearly 40 lbs. to play Eric Draven and was deeply involved in his characterization and fight choreography. His performance was at once...

Part One: 52 Meetings From The Comic To The Screen
By Ryan J. Downey
Sure, there's Richard Donner's Superman, the Christopher Nolan Batman films, but to many, "The Crow" remains the greatest comic book flick ever made.

Wes Bentley dons a co-producer hat and stars as Jonathan Merrick in Edgar Allan Poe's Ligeia , a film by Michael Staininger and written by John Shirley ( The Crow ) that's due to arrive sometime within the next year. If we're being vague on the release date, it's not on purpose. When ShockTillYouDrop.com chatted with Bentley and co-star Michael Madsen ( here ) back in April, we presumed the film was close to completion. Months later, it appears to be done as photos, a trailer (see below) and an official site have surfaced online. Also, you'll find below an early, albeit small, piece of poster art. Bentley plays Merrick, a man caught up in a dying woman's scheme to steal souls from others to keep her alive. Eric Roberts, Sofya Skya and Kaitlin Doubleday co-star. Keep it...
