Hellboy is officially headed back to the big screen. Deadline confirms that a reboot of the demonic hero, titled "Hellboy: The Crooked Man," is in the works at Millennium Media and Dark Horse Entertainment. The news was first broken by Discussing Film.
"The Crooked Man" will feature the third live-action iteration of Hellboy, following the ones played by Ron Perlman (in Guillermo del Toro's duology) and David Harbour (in Neil Marshall's 2019 reboot). The script is being co-written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and his frequent collaborator Christopher Golden. Brian Taylor is set to direct. Deadline confirms that production will start in Bulgaria come March and casting conversations are well underway; according to Discussing Film, the studio is seeking a younger actor in their 20s or 30s to play the new Hellboy. That's because "The Crooked Man" takes place at an earlier point in Hellboy's life than previous movies — the 1950s,...

This article contains spoilers for "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio."
Even when adapting others' stories, Guillermo del Toro always puts a personal thumbprint on his movies. He remixed Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" as a superhero spin on Beauty and the Beast, reframing the relationship between the eponymous hero (Ron Perlman) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) as a love story. In his 2021 remake of "Nightmare Alley," he eschewed the ghostly black-and-white color scheme of the original film. Courtesy of cinematographer Dan Laustsen, del Toro's film mixed lurid, snowy blues with golden yellow hues; the blood really pops in both colors.
The filmmaker's most recent feature, the stop-motion "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" was released on Netflix, to critical acclaim. The tale of the wooden boy is a classic that's been retold many times, but del Toro found a fresh way to spin the story and make it feel a piece with his films...

The Broadway production of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Between Riverside And Crazy starring Common will be simulcast during its final two weeks in February, producer Second Stage Theatre announced today.
The play will be the second production simulcast by Second Stage, following last season’s production of Clyde’s.
“We are very pleased to once again offer a simulcast viewing option – in real time – from our Broadway home, the Hayes Theater,” said Second Stage Executive Director Khady Kamara in a statement. “This unique program significantly broadened our audience with last year’s production of Clyde’s and we are excited to resume this program by simulcasting a live Broadway performance of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play into people’s homes this winter.”

Second Stage Theater will bring back its simulcast streaming of Broadway performances this winter with Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Between Riverside and Crazy.
The non-profit theater company will sell tickets to live-streamed performances of the play, which will also be happening in front of a live audience, from Jan. 31 through Feb. 12, 2023, the last two scheduled weeks of the play’s run. While rare in the industry, due to the costs involved and fear of cannibalizing the audience, this is the second time the theater company has simulcast a Broadway play from the Hayes Theater.
Last year, Second Stage launched the program by simulcasting 14 performances of Lynn Nottage’s Clydes during the last two weeks of its run in January and in the thick of the omicron variant. Eleven of the 14 simulcast performances sold out, with 78 percent of viewers coming from outside New York City.

Sometimes it takes someone with horns (or the remnants of them) to take down evil, as evidenced in Mike Mignola's Hellboy comic book series and Guillermo del Toro's two film adaptations. And before we see Neil Marshall's new take on the popular franchise, Funko is releasing a line of Pop! vinyl figures based on the comic book version of the beloved demon and several of his friends (and enemies).
From Funko: "The Hellboy comic book series is joining the Funko family and receiving the Pop! vinyl treatment!
This series includes Hellboy, the vigilante Lobster Johnson, pyrokinetic Liz Sherman, and fish-man Abe Sapien.
In addition to our heroes are the evil sorcerer, Grigori Rasputin, and The Queen of Blood, Nimue!
Look for the Hellboy chase piece, Hellboy with horns. A rarity of 1-in-6.
Coming this Fall!"

Ian McShane is a revered and accomplished British actor whose career dates back to the early 1960s. His breakout role came in 2000, when he played the amoral, serpentine mob boss, Teddy Bass, in Sexy Beast, a brutal crime thriller that also starred Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley (in one of his most thoroughly entertaining roles). American audiences probably knew him best as the infamous (and quasi-historical) Al Swearengen in David Milch's classic anti-Western Deadwood -- a role now firmly entrenched in American pop culture.
McShane is undoubtedly one of the greatest character actors working today, he's played everything from pirate to hitman to martial arts tiger to the Norse God Odin himself, all with one thing in common: they're all take-no-shit, total badasses! THR's announcement of McShane joining Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot is absolutely huge news, which vaults this film to the top of my must-see movies of...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy (2004) is showing on Mubi from May 14 - June 13, 2017 in the United Kingdom. It is hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of director and source material than Guillermo Del Toro with Hellboy. Mike Mignola’s graphic novel series about a demon put to work by the Feds could have been tailor-made for the Mexican fantasy auteur. Hellboy’s panels pit brutish monsters against mad visionaries in dank subterranean crypts, drawing on European folklore and making a fetish of clanking machinery, crumbling ruins and otherworldly magic. Mignola’s primary theme is always the past’s unshakeable hold over the present, the dead’s habit of returning to haunt the living. All of the above are the sort of gothic tropes that have recurred again and again in some form or other throughout Del Toro’s filmography too,...

Of the many films the Tribeca Film Festival shows, one of the biggest categories that often gets overlooked is the shorts category. Shorts are most definitely much harder to make considering their limited screen time and the need to fit a whole story within that time. Taking that into consideration, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival decided to split up its shorts submissions into various categories, including New York Now shorts program.
This array of shorts all contained some form of New York City within them, whether through history, character, story, or anything in between. There were seven shorts in the program, and they are as follows:
Mildred & The Dying Parlor: Directed by Alex Gayner, starring Zosia Mamet, Jane Krakowski, Steve Buscemi, and Evan Jonigkeit; about a family who runs a dying parlor out of their home until an unexpected visitor shows up. Wannabe: Directed by Matthew Manson, starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner,...

Out doing promotional talk for his new Amazon Studios series "Hand Of God," beloved character actor and former "Sons of Anarchy" star Ron Perlman was asked about the possibility of returning to one of his most iconic roles - Hellboy.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has previously indicated he wishes to finish his 'trilogy' of "Hellboy" films and, though he doesn't expect it will go forward, is keen on the idea. Perlman meanwhile has expressed excitement and uncertainty on social media regarding the possibility, and this week spoke with Empire about what might lure him back:
"I really feel as though I'm done with the character. I don't have a burning desire to put that s--t on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it's such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it.

What's It About? Cineastes and fans of war movies will dig this drama that uses real WWII footage in this tale of a young soldier headed to D Day. Sounds simple, but it's pretty heavy, and the unique use of real war footage adds to the narrative.
Why We're In: With Kubrick collaborator John Alcott as the cinematographer, a spiffy restoration, and loads of extras, "Overload" is a good addition to your collection.

Why We're In: A weird, sad, beautiful love story from the delicious brain of Spike Jonze? We're so far in.
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"Overlord" (Criterion)
What's It About? Cineastes and fans of war movies will dig this drama that uses real WWII footage in this tale of a young soldier headed to D Day. Sounds simple, but it's pretty heavy, and the unique use of real war footage adds to the narrative.
Why We're In: With Kubrick collaborator John Alcott as the cinematographer, a spiffy restoration, and loads of extras, "Overload" is a good addition to your collection.

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying!
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth No. 118
Hellboy's old pals in the B.P.R.D. are in a heap of trouble (and he's no help). The world has, effectively, ended. Giant monsters pour from the center of the world. The Black Flame is a near-deific powerhouse of fire and muscle watching over ruined Manhattan. The key members of the group are scattered across the nation. And everyone's about to be eaten by some sort of monster. A blow-for-blow battle between Liz Sherman and the Flame ensues, and chaos is the law.
Bag it or board it up?...

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth No. 114
Liz Sherman knows how to kill monsters. She's been doing it for years now. So when she finally returns to help a troupe of hapless police officers everyone knows good things are on the way. She takes them to a hospital where a crazed doctor has been turning his patients into monstrosities, and we see just how much she's developed both emotionally and pyrotechnically.
Bag it or board it up? This issue is definitely a keeper! In a series that can sometimes feel hopeless or without direction,...

What a year for horror comics! There's been so much to read. We've seen Hellboy wander around hell (after killing the devil). We've seen Rick Grimes and company struggle along against a demented foe in The Walking Dead. Hell, we've even seen Kiss fight off the martians from Mars Attacks (though we really wish we didn't). Now let's take a moment and look back on our favorite "single issues" from the past year. We don't mean a comic series as a whole - just the single comic book issue in and of itself. From one-shots to standout issues… it's time to hone in on our fanaticism!
Mystery Society Special 2013

No. 3 This issue finds our fine fiend Barnabas Black squaring off against hordes of undead and a bad guy named The Bone Wrangler. After a spirited fight between the undead and Barnabas (and the witches he's protecting) the crew flees to a remote cabin where The Eye of Fates demands everyone's attention. Bag it or board it up? This is a fast-paced, grisly, nasty comic that's full of attitude and has a lot of ambition. I love the spirit of this comic. It's dabbling in divinity, demonics, magic and witchcraft, and everyone...

Girlfriends. Gal pals. Sidekicks. Whatever you call them, superheroes just wouldn't be able to rise to their full powers without a love interest — and usually a healthy dose of some smoldering on-screen sexuality.
So whether it's the famous upside down kiss between Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and girlfriend Kirsten Dunst or Gwyneth Paltrow's slinky skirts and witty banter with Iron Man Robert Downey, Jr., the chemistry between a superhero and his civilian paramour is usually an integral part of the story.
With Spidey, Batman and their respective girlfriends poised for domination at the summer box office, we take a look at the women who have stood behind their supermen — and rate them on their brains, beauty, bravery and butt-kicking.
15. Maggie Gyllenhaal
In "The Dark Knight" (2008), Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes played previously by Katie Holmes. Here, Bruce Wayne suffers through her lovers' quandary: she promises him...

Fans of Dark Horse Comics' Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, aka B.P.R.D., know everything is not exactly kosher in their comic universe. The world was radically altered when everyone's favorite firestarter, Liz Sherman, torched the center of the Earth with a particularly powerful fireblast. And all that is just fine by Dark Horse's Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie.
"Since Liz torched the center of the Earth..." Allie said, "basically when she did that, all the monsters and all the weird shit that's hidden in the Earth has been coming to the surface." This leads to all kinds of problems for the B.P.R.D. -- problems Allie and his co-writer, Hellboy and B.P.R.D. creator Mike Mignola, can't wait to deal with.

For the first time in the history of The Amazing Race, a pair of Survivor winners will compete during the same season - as one team!
CBS announced this week that married couple Ethan Zohn (Survivor: Africa) and Jenna Morasca (Survivor: The Amazon) will compete against 10 other duos when this reality competition returns on September 25. Said the former, who battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma just a few months ago, to EW:
“Last year I was attached to a pump in complete isolation in a f-cking hospital room, and now I’m out traveling the world with the woman I love. Whatever happens, it’s gonna be okay. But if she screws up, I’m gonna kill her.”
The cast will be rounded out by Zac Sunderland (the youngest person to sail around the world solo), former NFL tight end Marcus Pollard and others. Details follow.

The Amazing Race has not been shy about having former CBS reality stars on the show. Boston Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich of Survivor fame played twice, while Big Brother’s Jeff Schroeder and Jordan Lloyd, as well as Alison Irwin (and her non-Big Brother boyfriend Donny) all have appeared on the program. But now, for the first time, two winners will team up to compete as Survivor: Africa champ Ethan Zohn and Survivor: The Amazon victor Jenna Morasca head up the cast for the show’s 19th installment (premiering Sept. 25 on CBS), which will also feature some new twists to the game.

In June, we brought you hope from Ron Perlman’s mouth about completing the Hellboy trilogy. At the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, both director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ron Perlman have voiced their optimism about returning to film a third installment of the Hellboy films.
In a panel discussion, Del Toro talked about the persistence it takes to make a movie:
“I carried Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark thirteen years. I carried Hellboy for almost eight years before it got made, so I’ll stick to [a project] until it gets made.
The reality is, each of those movies have been an incredible ordeal to make. [Hellboy] was an $89 million movie [but] I wound up making it for $50 million because nobody wanted a red guy.
The third one is the hardest one because it’s the darkest one and not necessarily has a happy ending. The third one is epic. It’s gigantic.

Surprisingly emotional, smart and fun, B.P.R.D.: The Dead Remembered #3 (Dark Horse Comics) is a sufficiently creepy story about witches and haunted forests. It’s a flashback episode, an origin tale, about one of the supernatural agents from the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense—a secret organization that investigates mystical threats. This issue does a great job of fleshing out the series’ supporting character Liz Sherman, finally giving her a starring role.
