Today celebrated Al Roker’s 45 years with NBC today on the morning show. The beloved weathercaster was described as “the beating heart of this show” during the segment, as his colleagues noted he has set 7,047 wake-up alarms for 3:45 am, been on hand for 27 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, and contributed to the coverage of 13 Olympics.
A clearly moved Roker told his co-stars that it had been a “very good run”. “I really am very fortunate. Nobody gets to be somewhere this long without friends and people who help you and a team behind you. Nobody does it by themselves. It’s been a very good run,” he said.
They then cued up a throwback video of Roker’s long NBC career, opening with a segment on penguins at his first job with the network in 1978 at Wkyc in Cleveland, which was then an NBC owned and operated station.

Today on Monday morning commemorated Al Roker’s 45th year as a member of the NBC family, by offering up some sweet words for “the beating heart of this show” and cuing up a throwback video that involved… penguins?
Roker’s career with NBC began in 1978 at Wkyc in Cleveland, which at the time was an NBC owned-and-operated station. In late 1983, he was named the regular weeknight weathercaster at Wnbc-tv in New York, replacing 27-year veteran Dr. Frank Field. From 1990 to ’95, Roker filled in for Willard Scott on Today, and come early 1996, upon Scott’s announced retirement, Roker received the regular weekday weatherman slot.

Frank Field, a longtime meteorologist and health reporter at NBC’s New York station Wnbc-tv, has died. He was 100.
Field died Saturday in Florida, according to Wnbc, where he spent 25 years of his career.
Field attended Brown University and MIT, where he learned meteorology, and later served as an Army Air Force meteorology officer in the European theater during World War II.
Additionally, he earned a degree in geology at Brooklyn College, a bachelor’s degree in optometry at Columbia University and a doctorate on the faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Field began his meteorology career at Wnbc in 1958. There, he gained national attention when, according to Wnbc, “Johnny Carson decided needling ‘NBC’s crack meteorologist’ would be good fun and he became a regular guest on The Tonight Show. Field matched wits with the popular comedian, somehow managing to maintain his dignity and air of authority.”

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.
Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

As we reflect on 2021, we can’t help but think of all the TV greats who left us.
The last 12 months have seen the deaths of several small-screen legends, including seven-time Emmy winner Ed Asner — the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards. We also said goodbye to fellow Mary Tyler Moore vets Cloris Leachman (who, at eight Emmys, is tied with Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the most awarded performer in Emmy history), Gavin MacLeod and, as of Dec. 31, showbiz icon Betty White.

Producers of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored almost all of the expected people who died this past year. Who was not featured during the emotional In Memoriam segment Sunday night on CBS? Prominent performers and character actors such as Frank Bonner, Sean Connery, Michael Constantine, Abby Dalton, James Hampton, Bruce Kirby, Norman Lloyd, Helen Reddy and Jane Withers were not part of the 49 people included.
While over 100 celebrated television people died since last year’s event in mid-September of 2020, the segment generally only makes room for less than 50. Among those featured Sunday night: TV Academy Hall of Fame members actor Ed Asner, production designer Roy Christopher, actress Cloris Leachman, writer/producer William Link and actress Cicely Tyson. Current nominee Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm Macdonald sadly passed away this month as well.

Al Roker revealed some personal news on Friday.
The 66-year-old has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and will undergo surgery to have his prostate removed.
"It's a good news-bad news kind of thing," Al said.
"Good news is we caught it early. Not great news is that it's a little aggressive, so I'm going to be taking some time off to take care of this."
"We'll just wait and see, and hopefully in about two weeks, I'll be back (on Today)," Al said on the show.
The surgery will be carried out in New York City by Dr. Vincent Laudone, who opened up about the meteorologist's prognosis.
"Fortunately his cancer appears somewhat limited or confined to the prostate, but because it's more aggressive, we wanted to treat it, and after discussion regarding all of the different options — surgery, radiation, focal therapy — we settled on removing the prostate," Laudone said on the show.

Richard and Maurice McDonald revolutionized the way that billions of people around the world eat – and produce – fast food.
The business they started in the 1930s as a hot dog stand near a racetrack is now valued at over $110 billion with more than 36,000 locations in over 100 countries around the world.
But McDonald’s wouldn’t be the global force it is today if not for the man who bought the family business and turned it into an empire.

Willard Scott, weatherman for NBC’s “The Today Show,” will retire on Dec. 15 after 35 years on the show and 65 years on the network, Matt Lauer announced Friday. The 81-year-old meteorologist passed down his duties to Al Roker in the 1990s, but continued his segment celebrating the 100th birthdays of viewers with Smucker’s jelly. He is also known for playing Ronald McDonald in commercials for McDonald’s throughout the ’60s. As part of the announcement, the “Today” hosts paid tribute to Scott’s coverage of the George H.W. Bush inauguration, where he famously received a kiss from first lady Barbara Bush.

Feel free to lie down on the ground wherever you are and just die, because Today's Willard Scott will no longer be around to celebrate your 100th birthday. Matt Lauer announced Scott's plan to retire after 35 years at the show on this morning's program. In addition to his work as a weatherman and the original Ronald McDonald, Willard Scott is the reason we as a culture have the cognitive association between elderly people and Smucker's Jelly. Elderly people and Smucker's Jelly: They go together like peanut butter and elderly people. Scott's last day on Today will apparently be Tuesday, so if there is any way to age yourself 60 years in three days, please Dm me about it.

America's weatherman is officially signing off.
Today's Willard Scott will retire Tuesday after 35 years on the morning show and 65 years on NBC, anchor Matt Lauer announced Friday.
Scott, 81, ceded weather report duties to Al Roker in the 1990s but still went on air for his famous segment celebrating viewers' 100th birthdays with Smucker's jelly. He also played Ronald McDonald in the fast food chain's commercials throughout the '60s.
But the newscaster's most memorable moment came in 1989, when he was reporting on President George H. W. Bush's inaugural parade and first lady Barbara Bush broke away from her husband to give Scott a smooch.

The move marks a turnaround from recent years, when the red-haired mascot faded to the background as McDonald's came under criticism for using him to market to children. The company says Ronald McDonald won't have his own Twitter handle, but that it will post photos and videos of him on its existing social media accounts. The clown, known for his painted-on smile and baggy yellow jumper,...

New York (AP) — NBC says 80-year-old Willard Scott has tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend. The veteran "Today" show personality and Paris Keena were wed Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla. They have been together for about 11 years, "Today" host Matt Lauer said in sharing the news on Wednesday morning's telecast. The jovial Scott, billed as the program's weather reporter and centenarian, has been a part of "Today" since 1980. Lauer framed the announcement as "another surprise wedding" in the "Today" family. Last month, co-anchor Savannah Guthrie made an on-the-air announcement of her marriage to communications strategist Mike Feldman two days earlier. She also told viewers she was four months pregnant. Some experts estimate that one in seven people have some level of Coulrophobia, a fear of clowns. Truthfully, I'd wager to guess that those numbers are actually much higher. Let's face it, though they exist to spread joy and make people happy (...or so they say), there's just something insanely creepy about people who have permanent smiles painted onto their faces, especially considering the fact that you have no idea what's really hiding underneath the makeup. That is the very definition of unsettling, in my personal dictionary.
If you don't agree, then allow me to introduce to you Exhibit A; the original version of Ronald McDonald. First introduced in 1963, and played by Willard Scott, Ronald was originally a whole lot creepier looking than he even is now... no small feat, considering the modern day incarnation of the character is still pretty damn nightmare-inducing.
You ready? You sure? Well alright then.

Guess what, Disney fans? Frozen is good. And as you may have heard, the soundtrack is even better.
Like the now-classics in Disney’s Renaissance period, Frozen’s array of original tunes feels as fresh and infectious as the Menken-Ashman-Rice songs that defined a generation’s Disney musicals. I caught an early screening of the film last week and was dismayed to find that I’d have to wait an excruciating six days for the album to be released online (I even begged EW’s music staff for an early listen, but no dice).

Universal Pictures will turn a century old on April 30, and in advance of their 100th birthday, the studio has trotted out a new (shiny!) logo that touts their triple-digit age. Why they didn’t get Willard Scott to do one of those Smuckers Jam birthday label shout-out things on The Today Show, I simply don’t know, but there’s still time! Of course, that new logo is neat and all (and, again, shiny!), but what’s most exciting about this news is the studio’s announcement that they will also celebrate their centennial with the restoration of thirteen of its most famous films. THR reports that the studio has restored All Quiet on the Western Front, The Birds, Abbott and Costello’s Buck Privates, Dracula (1931), the Spanish-language Dracula (which was filmed on the same set at night), Frankenstein, Jaws, Schindler’s List, Out of Africa, Pillow Talk, Bride of Frankenstein, The...
