Exclusive: Ben Whishaw will reunite with director Ira Sachs to shoot an “intimate” movie about photo artist Peter Hujar.
Until his death from AIDS in 1987, Hujar was a leading figure in the group of artists, musicians, writers, and performers at the forefront of Manhattan’s downtown cultural scene.
The untitled film follows Passages, the acclaimed picture Sachs shot in Paris with Whishaw and Franz Rogowski.
Passages has been enjoying awards season attention with Rogowski bagging the best actor prize from the New York Film Critics Circle — in fact I just saw him the other night at an event for the picture out here in Los Angeles.
Whishaw, Rogowski and the film are in contention for prizes at the Independent Spirit Awards. Whishaw’s also on the BAFTA Best Supporting actor longlist for Passages.

At the Museum of Modern Art première of Tara Subkoff's sharp-witted #Horror, Timothy Hutton spoke to me about the art (curated by Urs Fischer) and parenting, and Lydia Hearst made a Drew Barrymore out of Wes Craven's Scream comparison, as Chloë Sevigny, Balthazar Getty, Taryn Manning, Stella Schnabel, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Natasha Lyonne, Sadie Seelert, Haley Murphy, Bridget McGarry, Blue Lindeberg, Mina Sundwall and Emma Adler walked the red carpet.
Wes Anderson favorite Waris Ahluwalia (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) confided to me that Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects and House Of 1000 Corpses are the two horror films he loves and at the Players Club after party confirmed he now has three.
Timothy Hutton: "The cyberbullying is what the movie is about.

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

Filmmaker Jordan Galland has flirted with Park City before, his debut Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009) received a special screening status at Slamdance. Certainly the addition of supporting players include Lou Taylor Pucci, Jemima Kirke, Stella Schnabel (You Wont Miss Me) and John Ventimiglia amps up the end product, and Galland’s ongoing creative collaboration with musician Sean Lennon might earmark the project as an appointment with the occult that avoids trappings of...

One of my favorite parts of the Sundance Film Festival is the Park City at Midnight movie line-up. This is where they put on a lot of the horror, sci-fi, comedy and other genre type films. They've also announced the movies that will be a part of the Spotlight and New Frontier sections.
Once again it looks like we've got a lot of solid films to look forward to. Of course there's going to be a few duds in the mix, but for the most part this looks like it's going to be an exciting year at Sundance. I can't wait to watch these movies!
Look over the list, read about the films, and let us know which movies sound interesting to you that you'd like to more know about!

Sundance Film Festival 2013 announced its initial line-up last night, with a very promising slew of films competing in the Us and World Dramatic and Documentary categories, as always.
Tonight, we have more news from Park City, Ut, with the announcement of the films that will be screening in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier categories.
Rising young star, Alice Englert (Ginger & Rosa, Beautiful Creatures), will be heading to the festival in the Park City at Midnight category with Jeremy Lovering’s horror, In Fear, which has a very tense and promising synopsis.
Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers will be getting its long-awaited Us premiere, having debuted at Cannes earlier this year, and been earning critics’ praise ever since. Steve Oram and Alice Lowe co-wrote the film and star in the leads, and with the ever-brilliant Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), there’s...

Ry Russo-Young is comfortable on both sides of the camera: She acted in Hannah Takes the Stairs and directed You Won’t Miss Me, starring her co-writer and pal Stella Schnabel — much like Lena Dunham, who collaborated on Russo-Young's latest directing effort, Nobody Walks. In the tense, quiet film, Olivia Thirlby stars as a young filmmaker who moves in with a Hollywood sound editor (John Krasinski) and his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt) and seems to seduce everyone in her path. Russo-Young chatted with Vulture about teaming up with Dunham, finding the perfect house to shoot in, and helping John Krasinski do his first love scene. You and Lena have followed parallel paths [both attended St. Ann’s and Oberlin, though five years apart] but somehow never met. How did you finally get together? We met at a film-related party, through mutual friends, and I think after that we traded works. This was before she made...

Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan Museum of Modern Art Through October 1, 2012 The ride downtown to Cana, the new restaurant in Tribeca, was slow -- traffic all the way. Lana called to confirm the reservations she had made earlier in the week. We finally arrived, only to find out that a wedding rehearsal dinner party (an Upper East Side couple who appear frequently on Page Six) had booked the place last-minute, filling up most of the good tables. Fortunately we were escorted to a large banquette in the back, which afforded us some privacy, at least. We were meeting some friends, including writer Alissa Bennett and the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, who had just come back from the Venice Biennial. There were several people I didn't recognize immediately, but I was quickly introduced to reality television show hosts Jerry Saltz and China Chow (who were there doing a tech scout for their...

Rampart Trailer, Rampart Poster. Oren Moverman‘s Rampart (2011) movie trailer, movie poster stars Woody Harrelson, Jon Bernthal, Steve Buscemi, Sigourney Weaver, and Robin Wright. Rampart‘s plot synopsis: “Los Angeles, 1999. Officer Dave Brown (two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing “the people’s dirty work” and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate. Brown internalizes his fear, anguish and paranoia as his world, complete with two ex-wives who are sisters, two daughters, an aging mentor dispensing bad advice, investigators galore, and...

Yeah, we know. Your eyeballs are likely hurting, and so are ours, but this is the last batch--for now--of peeks of films that are headed to Tiff. But c'mon, this beats new looks at Optimus Prime or whatever right? If you didn't see Oren Moverman's "The Messenger" rectify that situation pronto and then at least you'll understand why "Rampart" is one of our most anticipated films for Tiff. Starring a terrific ensemble including Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Ice Cube, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Stella Schnabel, Steve Buscemi and Ned Beatty, the story is, of course, based…...

The indie dramedy/mumblecore revolution keeps sailing on with word that Rosemarie DeWitt, John Krasinski, and Olivia Thirlby are in negotiations to star in Ry Russo Young's new film Nobody Walks. Jonathan Schwartz is producing, who's coming off of a big Sundance success in Like Crazy, which took home the big prize. When one considers that the film was co-written by Lena Durham (who took a cyber-beating earlier this month when her Tiny Furniture was more-or-less confirmed for a Criterion DVD), this really begins to take on the look of some sort of manifesto against the genre's detractors. Russo-Young's previous film You Wont Miss Me premiered at Sundance and had a stint at SXSW, was moderately successful critically, and really put Stella Schnabel on the map (though, Miral might have just undone that). The film was intended to go behind the camera in Los Angeles by early 2011, but, likely...

Misinterpretations of “Miral” as a haphazard biography or didactic political plea are bound to keep Julian Schnabel’s latest film from reaching full and fair appreciation. This gentle, heartfelt story is not so much about Israel’s turbulent political history since its birth in 1948, and it’s not about the subsequent Palestinian struggle for freedom, though both of these form the film’s basis. And, though it follows the interconnected lives of four Palestinian women over four decades, it’s not really a nuanced portrait of any of them either. Rather, Schnabel has made a poem on film — and here is an artist adept at them — dedicated to simple, pure ideas. For ultimately “Miral” is about love,...

In the indie film "You Won't Miss Me" (in select theaters today), Stella Schnabel -- the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Julian Schnabel ("Basquiat," "Before Night Falls," "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") -- tackles her first true film role, playing 23-year-old New York City misfit Shelly Brown. Fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, Shelly is in search of acceptance in any shape or form she can find it, and is willing to do pretty much anything to achieve that goal. It's a daring role for an untested actress, but Schnabel pulls it off with empathy, charisma and the talented direction of longtime pal Ry-Russo Young.

In "You Won't Miss Me," Stella Schnabel -- daughter of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "Before Night Falls" director Julian Schnabel -- plays Shelly Brown, a 23-year-old trying to find work, love and herself in New York City. That's a tall order for any twenty-something living in the Big Apple, but it's an even stiffer proposition for someone who's recently been released from a psychiatric hospital... which Shelly has. Check out an exclusive clip from the film below.
"You Won't Miss Me" is directed by Ry Russo-Young, features a bevy of notable New York artists and musicians, and is a mix of scripted film and cinéma vérité. It opens in limited release today (December 10).

When speaking to Ry Russo-Young, the adjective "abstract" will come up a lot in conversation in terms of the style of her films. But that shouldn't be confused with the substance, which is so emotionally precise. Where many filmmakers have depicted the fear and uncertainty of twentysomethings with quirk and gorgeously lit indifference, Russo-Young portrays it in a grainy haze in her latest film "You Wont Miss Me," the result of her practical use of a variety of formats, ranging from Flip cams to Super 8s, and the world-weary skepticism of her main character Shelly Brown (Stella Schnabel) that rarely allows for clarity.
As refreshingly tough-minded a character study as Brown is a character, the film was born out of Russo-Young's desire to do something with Schnabel, a friend since elementary school, and developed from a three-hour interview where Schnabel first portrayed the wild, eternally frustrated Shelly into a loose-knit...

Despite over-saturation, a refusal/inability to use the film medium to its full potential, and the generally low-aiming nature of the mumbly micro-indie, it seems the genre is here to stay. Entering the ring is the SXSW-approved "You Won't Miss Me," directed by New York-based filmmaker Ry Russo Young. Stella Schnabel, daughter of Julian ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"), plays her first role not under her father's eye as the troubled protagonist Shelly. Director: Ry Russo-Young Writers: Ry Russo-Young, Stella Schnabel Starring: Stella Schnabel, Simon O Connor, Carlen Altman, Rene Ricard, Donald Cumming Shelly (Stella Schnabel -- daughter of Julian Schnabel) is a twenty-something aspiring actress armed with with plethora of problems -- many of which are psychological in origin -- flopping around amongst the young bohemian hipsters of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Chock full of contradictions: she says that she wants to find love, yet she hooks up with guys (and girls) with whom she has no chance of a relationship; she actively auditions for acting roles, yet she does not seem interested in winning the roles; she is astutely perceptive (and critical) of the world around her, yet she is unable to differentiate between the reality and fiction of her own life; she possesses a solid personal code of ethics, yet she can toss that code aside at the blink of an eye.

"You Wont Miss Me" is all about Shelly Brown, a girl with the kind of problems plenty of 20-somethings dream of moving to New York for the express purpose of having: substance abuse, reckless hookups in her bedraggled Williamsburg apartment with shaggy boys who mistreat her, sudden fights with friends and strangers, an unseen actress mother who doesn't pay her enough attention, and no job beyond auditioning for roles herself. But the film, the second from director Ry Russo-Young, isn't your average chronicle of dabblings in urban self-destruction, because Shelly, as she's begun to realize herself, can't turn down the volume. She's not crazy -- the film is structured around fractions of her exit interview with the psychiatrist tossing from a mental hospital because she doesn't belong there -- but she's the kind of person who...

Festivals tend to have more than one jury so let's deal with the sidebar prizes first, before we get to the main competition jury, headed by Quentin Tarantino. But a little preview: Natalie Portman went home empty-handed for Black Swank but Mila Kunis didn't. Interesssssssting.
Various Sidebars
Europa Cinema Award: This honor comes from the Venice Days sidebar and the winning film was Bertrand Blier's Le Bruit des Glacons (The Clink of the Ice), a dark French comedy about an alcoholic dealing with cancer.
The Queer Lion: This prize focuses on the way films portray gay characters and themes. The winner was En el futuro (In the Future), a 62 minute black and white film directed by Mauro Andrizzi. None of the summaries seem to tell you what it's about. Hmmmm. It played in the Orizzonti sidebar of the festival. Guess they didn't like the disturbing sapphic tryst angle of Black Swan all that much.
