Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Oscar-winning animation film producer Nicolas Schmerkin has revealed his Paris-based outfit Autour de Minuit has signed a pre-development agreement with Franco-German TV channel Arte for its latest project, “Fucking Cat”, which is being pitched at this week’s Cartoon Forum in Toulouse.
An adaptation of Belgian author Stéphane Lapuss’ “Putain de Chat” comic book series, “Fucking Cat” tells the story of Moustique, the talking cat, who, like all cats, hates humans and would like to get rid of his master but faces the dilemna of how to become master of the world without giving up his cat food. Both Lapuss and co-author Lionel Bonnal will assist in penning the adaptation.
“The concept is that the cat talks but the human doesn’t, he just hears the ‘miaow’: it’s both situation comedy and dialogue comedy – the audience hears what the cat says to his master, and it’s not very nice,...

Gkids has acquired North American rights to Unicorn Wars — the latest genre-bending animated feature from Goya and Annecy Cristal-winning director Alberto Vázquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children) — ahead of its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest. The horror-comedy will be released in theaters by Gkids in early 2023, following its domestic release in Spain this fall.
Billed as Bambi meets Apocalypse Now, Unicorn Wars‘ logline is as follows:
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Gkids has acquired the North American distribution rights to “Unicorn Wars,” ahead of the adult animated film’s U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The news was announced Thursday.
Set during an ancestral war between teddy bears and unicorns, the horror-comedy film follows Bluet and Tubby, teddy bear brothers who are polar opposites to each other. When their time at teddy bear bootcamp leads to a combat tour in the Magic Forest, Bluet and Tubby’s complicated history and tense relationship could affect the fate of the war, including whether the teddy bears will fulfill the prophecy and usher in a new era.
“Unicorn Wars” is directed and written by illustrator Alberto Vázquez. Prior to this deal, Gkids distributed Vázquez’s Goya Award-winning feature “Birdboy: The Forgotten Children” and animated short “Decorado.”

Poster, Stills of ‘Unicorn Wars,’ from ‘Birdboy’ Director Alberto Vázquez, Unveiled at Cartoon Movie
Having received quite possibly the best reception of any title at Tuesday’s Cartoon Movie Croissants Breakfast – a video clip prompting approving whoops and hollers – Spanish-French animated feature “Unicorn Wars” saw its poster and first stills unveiled at the presentation which looks like an early highlight at this year’s meet.
Yohann Comte, co-founder of Charades, the film’s sales agent, also confirmed at the unveil that “Unicorn Wars” has sold to Japan’s Riskit. UFO Distribution handles the feature’s release in France, Barton Films distributes in Spain.
The film is just a few weeks off completion, said Miñambres. It figures as a strong candidate to play Annecy Animation Festival’s main competition this June, maybe taking in the Cannes Festival on the way.

France’s Autour de Minuit, Fklg and Canal Plus are teaming to co-produce Théo Grosjean’s “Freaked Out” (“Flippé”), an animated series for adults whose first season was presented – and received an upbeat reception – at September’s Toulouse’s Cartoon Forum.
The producers are currently in talks to greenlight a second season.
The two-minute episode comedy series adapts “The World’s Most Anxious Man,” Grosjean’s autobiographical graphic novel, which revolves around a man’s everyday modern life: Subways, carpooling, parties, taking the plane. Everything sparks a panic attack in his over active mind, which is capable of imagining the worst scenarios for all kinds of situations.
“We were instantly convinced by Grosjean’s talent, loved his humor and his resonance with the zeitgeist. The character embodies a reluctance to abide by the prescriptions of our society, that obsesses over performance and achievement, deifies self-confidence and urges people to exhibit their dream evenings,...

UFO Distribution has taken French rights on the Charades-sold “Unicorn Wars,” an Alberto Vázquez apocalyptic fantasy tale that got a Work in Progress session on Thursday at the Annecy Animation Festival.
UFO was tempted to pick up the rights for “Birdboy: The Forgotten Children” years ago, Stéphane Auclaire at UFO Distribution told Variety, adding: “The universe developed in ‘Unicorn Wars’ is less black, more colorful, ‘funnier,’ and fits perfectly to code transgressions – here, the childhood teddy bears which go to war– regularly addressed in the films we release, as was the case with Christopher Morris’ ‘4 Lions’ or the films by Quentin Dupieux or Bertrand Mandico.”
At the panel, judging by the images and explanations, it was clear that the free-spirited mix of acid humor, social scrutiny, and deep artistic DNA of the feature endorsed its author Vázquez as one the most established and personal voices in European adult animation.

On Wednesday, the Annecy Animation Festival hosted a live, in-person Work in Progress panel for Spanish filmmaker Alberto Vázquez’s “Unicorn Wars” at the Salle Pierre Lamy, perhaps indicating that the world is healing. Joining Vázquez on stage were his Oscar-winning Autor de Minuit producer Nicolas Schmerkin, Spanish producer Chelo Loureiro from Abano Producións, and “Unicorn Wars” technical supervisor Fiona Cohen.
“Unicorn Wars” unspools amidst a prophesized apocalyptic war between religious zealot teddy bears and pragmatic, environmentalist unicorns who have fought for as long as anyone alive can remember. However, while the film’s overarching backdrop is the ancestral wars between the species, Vazquez explained that, “The real story is of two bears who fight for the love of their mother.”
Private Bluet is a cute, cuddly character who, at least outwardly, embodies everything a cartoon bear should be, and proves himself a keen soldier in the bear military. Meanwhile,...

Yesterday, a second Autour de Minuit short, Geoffroy de Crécy’s “Empty Places” – a hypnotic portrait of a world in which humdrum machines continue to function, though human beings have disappeared – took the Festivals Connexion Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes prize, in partnership with the Lumières Numériques & Mèche Courte Award.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

For once, the Oscars were a genuine nail-biter. That Bigelow and Cameron were once married merely heightened the drama – quietly exploited by the ceremony producers who sat them directly behind each other – as did the huge disparity in their box-office takes (with over $2.6bn, Avatar is the biggest film of all time; The Hurt Locker has just topped $21m).

Sandra Bullock won her first Best Actress award — and even she seemed surprised by the win. Jeff Bridges didn’t seem overly shocked to nab Best Actor, but he still gave a aww-inducing speech celebrating his eminent show-biz family. I got all the shorts wrong. And I know why: I under-estimated the Academy, and second-guessed them. If I had voted for my favorite in each category, I'd have picked right. Except maybe for doc Music by Prudence. What I should have recognized in that case was that the movie haunted me after I saw it. The one that makes me craziest is Logorama, which is so insanely clever. Backstage, producer Nicolas Schmerkin said he made it in English because it was set in Los Angeles. He said the film is "not about America. It's about our modern western world. So it also applies to France and Buenos Aires, where I am from, so it's not about Americans. It's about the way we live and the ...

Oscar winners 2010 list is here.
We already wrote about possible winners and competition between- James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, so we can say that we’re not at all surprised that this was Kathryn Bigelow’s night.
The Hurt Locker won 6 Oscars, including honour for Best Movie and Best Director.
So, Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director.
On the other hand, the movie that still sits on the top of box office, James Cameron’s Avatar definetely had a bad luck. The movie won only 3 golden statues in technical categories – Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
We can’t help but think that this show really seemed like Bigelow’s sweet revenge.
Sandra Bullock was named best actress for The Blind Side after she proudly attended Razzie 2010 event and took completely different award.
“Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?...

Well, there weren't many major surprises nor many particularly memorable moments, but we still had a lot of fun watching the Oscars here tonight. Thanks to all of you who tuned in for the live podcast and joined us in the live chat over at Ustream [1]. As you may have heard, The Hurt Locker cleaned up, taking home a total of 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, making Kathryn Bigelow the first female director to ever win the award. James Cameron's Avatar, on the other hand, won only for visual effects, art direction and cinematography. All of the acting categories went off as expected, with Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock winning Best Actor and Best Actress, while Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique won the supporting trophies. If there was an upset at all, it was probably The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos), which beat...

It was Kathryn Bigelow's night at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. Her film, "The Hurt Locker" took home six trophies including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. (photo courtesy of ABC.com)
James Cameron's "Avatar," nominated for 9 nods along with "The Hurt Locker" took home three trophies for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction.
Bigelow made history by being the first woman to win the Best Director trophy. She called her winning the "moment of a lifetime," and it is indeed!
All in all, it was a fun night, for me at least (check out my minute-by-minute Oscar blogfest right here).

The gala ceremony of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards has just come to a close with the announcement of this year's Best Picture. On Sunday night, March 7, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that "The Hurt Locker" was the one deserving to be crowned Best Motion Picture of the Year.
Having shown its clear domination since the beginning, the war thriller ended up with the most nods on the night as it nailed six. In addition to Best Picture, it has secured a win for director Kathryn Bigelow and for screenwriter Mark Boal among many others. The latter took the award for Best Original Screenplay.
"Hurt Locker" wasn't the only multiple winner on the special night though. "Avatar", "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" and "Up" have also garnered more than one nod. James Cameon's "Avatar" scored three nods for the technical categories, while Lee Daniels...

Here we are, the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. For months we've been seeing these movies, hearing buzz about their awards-worthiness, watching as the participating players press palms and tell the world why their efforts deserve to be honored ahead of the rest. And it all comes down to this. Who will go home with Best Picture? Will it be James Cameron's towering juggernaut "Avatar" or Kathryn Bigelow's tense, indie war story "The Hurt Locker"? That's just one of the many tight races this evening, so keep your browser locked here -- and make sure to keep refreshing! -- for continuing live coverage and commentary of the awards show as it unfolds.
12:02am It was almost a good ending. But then we ended on those two jokers. Steve, Alec... I love you guys. But please don't host the Oscars again. Thanks to all of you readers for tuning in!

It’s that time of the year again, folks. The eyes of the world will be focused on the biggest award-giving event in the film calendar on Sunday night. There’s nothing quite like the glitz and glamorama of the Academy Awards. Now in it’s 82nd year, this one’s extra special with James Cameron versus ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow. There will be laughter, cheers, tears, cheesy moments, boring moments, “hurry up and get on with it” moments and by the end of it all – historic moments.
The award ceremony was dreamt up by Louis B. Mayer, ostensibly as an advertising and promotional tool for the industry. Only in time did it turn into the behemoth it is today. Whatever the criticisms levelled at the Academy Awards ceremony – and there are plenty – it doesn’t stop billions across the world tuning in. Not even the Cannes Film Festival can compete with the Oscars.

I love Oscar pools. Just getting people to throw down a couple dollars to see if they can figure out who's gonna win which category. And while most folks are relatively well-educated about the major categories: acting, writing, directing -- and can take a running stab at the art direction, music, technicals -- it's those short films that always throw us for a loop. Rarely if ever are we able to actually sit down and watch short films outside of the film festival circuit, and even then, the short films aren't often things that we've seen. Even the one that virtually everyone's seen -- Partly Cloudy (because it preceded Up ) -- didn't make the cut for Oscar nods this year. Usually it's a list of names that you tend to pick based on which one sounds the most fun. I remember one year I got this locked because I had...

Plot: A man is stuck at a cafe drinking coffee, trying to figure out how to pay after he loses his wallet.
Overall
This is CGI, but it’s below anything you’re used to seeing in a Pixar flick. This short is just not sweet enough, and I’m not talking about the hundreds of cups of coffee this guy drinks. There is a homeless man and a little old lady involved. Probably my favorite part is the homeless man’s flies. Plus, I really didn’t understand the confusion when a robber enters the mix.
Final Score: 4/10
The Lady and the Reaper (La Dama y la Muerte)
Directed by: Javier Recio Gracia
Running Time: 8 minutes
Plot: An old woman has lived a long life, and when she dies, the grim reaper and a doctor fight over her survival.

Every year folks gather around their television sets and watch as the stars flaunt who they’re wearing on the red carpet and we all lumber through more than three hours of ceremony to hear first-hand which film is crowned Best Picture. Unfortunately, two of the categories that appear in the festivities but go mostly unrecognized are the awards for Best Live Action and Animated Short Films. That is, until recently, when the lineup of nominated shorts began screening in theaters for the general audience to experience and enjoy. This is great for two reasons; one being an increased exposure for the filmmakers, the other being an increased interest from the audience in these films as a part of the annual awards culture.

Nick Park's A Matter Of Loaf And Death, featured in the 2010 Oscar Animated Shorts Program
2010 Oscar Shorts Program opens Friday at South Lamar – Animated & Live Action
If you boil the average feature-length movie down to its central question, you usually end up with a very fine sediment of Answer resting on a sludge of capricious character musings and stylized packing peanuts. This is obviously not true of all feature-length films, but for the mainstream fare, run-time is nearly as important to success as quality. Exhibit A: Transformers 2. Assuming you, the reader, agrees that the quality of this film was sub-…human, consider the fact that the entire plot/story/meaning of the film could have only taken up 10 to 15-minutes of your valuable time. In fact, that movie took up almost 2 and a half hours or your valuable time and grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide. If the movie...

Fans of Ewan McGregor, Kristen Stewart and James Van Der Beek (!) will be seeing double this spring, as arthouses and multiplexes host an array of indie films ranging from the travails of septuagenarian New Yorkers looking for love ("The Last New Yorker") to 13-year-old assassins on the hunt for their first kill ("Kick-Ass"). If real life is more your speed, there are new documentaries about reviving animation strips (the Disney doc "Waking Sleeping Beauty") and stripping down (the burlesque history "Behind the Burly Q"), while foreign wonders like the French crime epics "A Prophet" and "Mesrine" mix with Korean treasures "Mother" and "The Good, The Bad and The Weird."
But of course, why limit yourself to just what's playing in the first-run theater near you? We've also included a look at the films that will be playing Anywhere But a Movie Theater (online, on demand, and on DVD) in the next few months,...

It’s that time again. Puxatawney Phil has seen his shadow, Lost is back on the air, and the Oscar nominations have been announced. And, to be honest, there are very few surprises here.
Granted, I’m a little late in breaking the news here, but if anything, this list proves there was no news to break. The Hurt Locker and Avatar led the best picture category with 9 nominations each, with A Serious Man, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, District 9, An Education and Up also picking up nods. Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Christoph Waltz were among the acting nominations.
Ten nominees for the coveted slot of Best picture didn’t do anything else really than allow a few more pics to get an ‘honorable mention’ for their efforts. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see Up on the Best pic...
