ESPN will relaunch “Sports Reporters” as a stand-alone YouTube program six years after ending the program’s 29-year run on its flagship linear network.
The former Sunday morning stalwart’s revival will debut in mid-2023, according to the Sports Business Journal, which first reported the development. It will be hosted by ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap, the son of Dick Schaap, the legendary sports journalist who hosted “Sports Reporters” for more than a decade before his death in 2001.
“Sports Reporters” ran from 1988 to 2017 until it was canceled not long after the death of John Saunders, who had replaced Dick Schaap and served as longtime host. The show pioneered the sportswriter roundtable format that would later be used as a model for the long-running daily ESPN show “Around the Horn” and others.

I don’t remember exactly when I met Cameron Crowe, but I know it was sometime in the 1970s. I was a 19-year-old rock critic writing for the Los Angeles Times, which might have been a big deal except that Cameron was a 17-year-old writing for Rolling Stone. If one were to grade by the curve, I suppose I was a slacker.
But when people who aren’t of a certain age find out about my rock ‘n’ roll past, the standard response is, “Oh, ‘Almost Famous?'” And my reply is always the same: “No, I’m almost ‘Almost Famous.'”
By arriving a couple of years later and a couple of years older than Cameron, I missed much of the era depicted in the movie — by the time I was going on the road with rock bands for Rolling Stone, things weren’t as freewheeling and my stories...

The dynamite 1998 documentary film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg directed by Aviva Kempner (Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg) looks at the Detroit Tigers’ hard-hitting Hall of Fame first baseman whose accomplishments extended beyond the field as American’s first Jewish baseball star.
The movie depicts how during the Golden Age of Baseball, Hank Greenberg’s achievements rivaled those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Steve Martin has been making people laugh so hard for so long that some — especially younger audiences — might not fully appreciate just how pure and fresh his early comic work was. Before the Oscars, before Father of the Bride, before Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, even before The Jerk, Martin was a total force of nature whose main platform was television, beginning with writing for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. In his wild and crazy prime, an appearance by Martin on Johnny Carson or other primetime showcase was insane, yet so carefully crafted. When he hosted Saturday Night Live or had a stand-up special,...

A few weeks ago, Brian Williams made a brief appearance on NBC’s Football Night in America broadcast to promote his new show, Rock Center. He and Bob Costas went back and forth about the new show, and their playful banter made me wonder if, in a slightly different world, their roles could have been reversed. I mean, this wasn’t Walter Cronkite sitting opposite Chris Berman. Both men are talented, likable, and respected, and it’s not impossible to imagine Williams in the sports field, covering Super Bowls and Olympics, and Costas anchoring the evening news. In fact, Costas...

He was the chess genius who electrified the planet – until his life unravelled spectacularly. Can a new film explain Bobby Fischer
Bobby Fischer was the blessing and the curse of chess in the 20th century. The American electrified the game when he rose to prominence in the 1950s and 60s, and won the world championship in a thrilling match against Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in 1972. But then, increasingly unhinged, he refused to defend his title in 1975, wandered the world for the next 30 years, and in 2008 died in Iceland – the scene of his 1972 triumph and, by the end, more or less the only country that would give him sanctuary. His absence from the chess stage was more interesting than anyone else's presence could possibly be, and his shadow still looms over the game. (A prize if you can name the current world champion.)
That current champion, a very sane and pleasant fellow,...

When I was in college, I attended a sports journalism conference at Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, where Dick Schaap, the late dean of New York sportswriters who at the time was most famous for hosting Espn’s Sports Reporters, was one of the featured speakers. To the discomfort of our hosts but the delight of the aspiring writers, Schaap proceded to spin anecdote after anecdote about the seedy underbelly of the horse business. To him, the track had, as he put it, an alluring “scent of larceny” about it. What a great phrase. If a screenwriter...

It's looking likely that Robert De Niro will make a movie player this year where he will play legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. What's the flick's title? Lombardi, naturally.
De Niro is a virtual certainty to make the movie as he's also a producer on the film through his Tribeca Productions company. Benjamin Button screenwriter Eric Roth has been hired to write the screenplay which will be based on Lombardi's life story rights and the material found in Instant Replay, a non-fiction book written by former Packer Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap. Espn Films is also involved as a producing company with Tribeca.
The makers want to capitalize on the best time of the year for football fans to be amped to see this one, so they've already announced that they would like to release the movie the week between the Afc and Nfc Conference Championships and...

De Niro as Lombardi: Robert De Niro is attached to play coach Vince Lombardi in a biopic being developed by Espn Films with the script being written by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump). The film will focus on the years that Lombardi rebuilt the Green Bay Packers into gridiron NFL champions. The producers plan to release the film between the Afc and Nfc conference championship games and the Super Bowl in 2012. Espn and Andell Entertainment acquired life rights to Lombardi's story from his estate and son Vincent Lombardi Jr., as well as the rights to the book "Instant Replay," written by former Packer Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap. Robert De Niro has signed to play legendary football coach Vince Lombardi in Espn Films' big screen feature Lombardi. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Munich, Benjamin Button, The Insider) penned the script. The National Football League is involved in the project, which means we probably won' see anything controversial in the movie (steroids, alcohol). I don't know a lot about football, but looking at photos of Lombardi, you can certainly see how De Niro would be cast in the role. Risky Business says the plan is to release the film between the Afc and Nfc conference championship games and the Super Bowl in 2012. The film will focus on Lombardi's Green Bay Packers years, although Espn acquired the entire life rights to Lombardi’s story from his estate, as well as the rights to Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap's book Instant Replay. For those of you who don't know about Vince Lombardi,...
