Hollywood legend Anthony Hopkins is teaming with Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell for Locked, a remake of the Argentinian action thriller 4X4. David Yarovesky directs from a script by Michael Arlen Ross (Oracle), with the original written and directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat. The project hails from Zq Entertainment and Raimi Productions.
According to the synopsis for Cohn’s 2019 thriller, 4X4 revolves around a thug who breaks into a specialized car with a unique security system that keeps him trapped inside, with no one being able to hear him crying for help. Cohn’s film starred Peter Lanzani, Ailén Mazioni, and Dady Brieva. I recommend checking out the trailer for 4X4, as it looks intense, brutal, and prone to giving audiences a feeling of claustrophobia.
In Yarovesky’s version, Powell plays the thug originally portrayed by Lanzani.

Director David Yarovesky is re-teaming with producer Sam Raimi on an action-thriller titled Locked, which was announced and detailed by Deadline today.
Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) will also star in Locked, a remake of the Argentinian movie 4X4 that came from writers/directors Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.
“Locked is an intense, character-driven thriller about a thief who breaks into a luxury SUV, only to realize that he’s stumbled into a complex and deadly trap set by a mysterious figure.”
Michael Arlen Ross (Oracle) wrote the script for the fresh remake.
“Dave Yarovesky so elevated the material on Nightbooks, and he was our first choice for this,” Raimi tells Deadline. “The script was so good and he’s such a good communicator that we were able to interest Anthony Hopkins, who for my generation is just about the greatest actor ever. After several years of no movement, it looks like a film adaptation of the "Just Cause" video game franchise is showing signs of life again.
The games follow Rico Rodriguez, aka the Scorpion, a black ops agent who carries out deadly missions for the U.S. government which revolve around destabilising rogue nations from within and turning the bad guys against each other.
The first game in the series was set on the fictional South American Republic of San Esperito, the second around the Indonesian islands of Panau, and the third the Mediterranean archipelago of Medici. Rodriguez frequently uses both a grappling hook and retractable parachute to perform death-defying stunts that utterly defy the laws of physics.
From hijacking fighter planes in mid-air to a chase/boss battle that takes place on the back of freshly launched nuclear missiles, the series earned strong reviews for its fun and impressive open world scale.

New York Times bestselling author Tony Lee has been brought onboard to work on the script for a futuristic reimagining of Robin Hood that is in the works at Hollywood Gang.
Jason Dean Hall ("American Sniper") and Michael Ross ("The Throwaways") worked on previous drafts of the script which is set in a dystopian London and follows a rogue MI5 agent on a mission to avenge injustice.
Gianni Nunnari ("300," "Immortals") will produce the project, currently going by the working title "Robin Hood 2058".

Gianni Nunnari's The Hollywood Gang, the production company behind the 300 movies and The Immortals, was one of the first companies to start development of a reimagining of the Robin Hood legend. They've been working on a "futuristic" take on the classic archer since 2009, and it's gone through multiple screenwriters, including Jason Dean Hall (American Sniper) and Michael Ross (The Throwaways), over the past few years. Now THR reports that the company is gearing back up to give it another go with the project.
They've just hired UK-based scribe Tony Lee to write the screenplay, which will be set in "dystopian London with a rogue MI5 agent on a mission to avenge injustice." Crackle has some new spy thriller entertainment coming your way. The online distributor will release its original, feature-length film The Throwaways on its site on December 19, 2014. The film centers around a character named Drew Reynolds (played by Sam Huntington of Being Human and Superman Returns fame), a hacker captured by the CIA and offered either a job with the organization or life in prison. Reynolds joins a “throwaway” group of the CIA’s least-favored agents, including Colonel Christopher Holden (played by James Caan from The Godfather) and combat specialist Dan Fisher (portrayed by Kevin Dillon of Platoon). Together, the three aim to take out a cyber-terrorist bent on destruction. Written by Michael Ross of Jerry McGuire, The Throwaways co-stars Katie McGrath from Merlin, Christian Hillborg of The Bridge, and Jack Kesy of The Strain. Michael Ross (Turistas) has been hired to script the Sam Raimi produced adaptation of the novel Bzrk. This is the first book in a trilogy written by Michael Grant, and Sony Pictures acquired the rights to the book last year.
This story actually sounds very cool. It follows "a team of gifted teens control biological nanobot robots warriors and they battle another group that is controlled by conjoined twins whose nanobots are brainwashing world leaders. The megalomaniacal twins are trying to take over the world."
I'm not really that familiar with Ross' work; I never saw Turistas because it didn't look like a good movie. But I'm looking forward to this one--hell, I look forward to anything that Raimi has a hand in. The guy likes what we like, so if he thinks this is going to make a cool movie then it probably will be.

Given the current quest by all the studios to nail down the next big young adult book series as a possible source material for movies, it’s no surprise to see Sony targeting Michael Grant and his Shadow Gang organisation. The author has been behind popular books such as Gone and sold the first of his new trilogy, Bzrk, to the studio last autumn. Now Michael Arlen Ross is aboard to adapt it for Sam Raimi to produce.Bzrk takes place in a world where gifted teenagers control biological nanobot robot warriors. They’re a necessary part of life, as they have to combat the threat from a similar group of biotech ‘bots controlled by conjoined twins who have been busy brainwashing world leaders. It all sounds like it could make for an intriguing story, and the trilogy aspect means there’s material for more movies if the first one hits.

David Fincher is set to produce a new thriller called Iou. The movie is being directed by Jacob Aaron Estes (Mean Creek) from a script written by Michael Arlen Ross (Turistas). Fincher rarely attaches himself to projects that he's not directing, so this must be a pretty good script. There are absolutely no details on the story, but they plan is to start shooting in January of 2013. According to the title of the film, a character obviously owes another character something.
It's been a while since I've seen Estes' Mean Creek, but I remember it was a good movie with a solid story. He also wrote and directed a dark comedy called The Details, and wrote a film called The Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein for Summit, which Matt Reeves is attached to direct.
I hate reporting on upcoming films when there are no story details to go on.

About ten years ago, BMW created a series of short films called The Hire. Clive Owen starred as "The Driver," a wheelman who transported things for various characters throughout the different shorts. The Social Network director David Fincher produced that series, and now it looks like he's putting his producing hat on once again. THR reports Fincher has signed on to produce a mysterious thriller called Iou, with Mean Creek helmer Jacob Aaron Estes directing. Plot details are scant, but we know Turistas scribe Michael Arlen Ross wrote the script and Fincher has a good track record when it comes to producing. It's worth noting that aside from The Hire series and Catherine Hardwicke's Lords of Dogtown, Fincher has never produced anything that he hasn't directed himself. I'll take that to mean that the story for Iou is pretty damn good. If Fincher has enough faith in it to...

Being an auteur who’s (almost too) well-known for wielding his all-but-required hand of total control, David Fincher isn’t keen to put his name on movies without a “directed by” credit also attached. In simply taking a) this simple fact and b) my immense fondness of his work into account, THR has already created some interest for Iou.
They’ve informed us that Fincher will produce a new thriller from Jacob Aaron Estes, the writer-director who made himself a known commodity with 2004′s acclaimed Mean Creek. David Fincher doesn't produce very often, so you can bet if he's throwing his weight behind something, he believes in it. To date, Fincher has put his name on those BMW ads in the early '00s directed by folks like Joe Carnahan and John Frankenheimer, Catherine Hardwicke's "Lords Of Dogtown" and, oddly, the Brittany Murphy vehicle "Love And Other Disasters" (we're sure there's a story there). But next is a project that certainly sounds intriguing.
Jacob Aaron Estes, the helmer behind the taut little thriller "Mean Creek" and the Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks starring dark comedy "The Details" (more on that in a second), is prepping his next effort "Iou" which has Fincher lending his producing powers, with Media Rights Capital financing (they are also behind Fincher's "House Of Cards"). Bryan Edward Hill has been hired to pen a rewrite of "Just Cause: Scorpion Rising", the film adaptation of the hit video game series from "Tomb Raider" and "Hitman" game producers Square Enix says Heat Vision.
The games follow Rico Rodriguez, aka the Scorpion, a black ops agent who carries out deadly missions for the U.S. government which revolve around destabilising rogue nations from within and turning the bad guys against each other. The first game in the series was set on the fictional South American tropical island San Esperito, the second around the Indonesian island of Panau.

Just Cause is an open world third-person shooter video game which sold over 1 million units on the PC, PS2, and Xbox 360. Variety reports that Eric Eisner's L+E Pictures has bought the rights to turn the Swedish developed video game into a movie. They have retained Michael Ross (Turistas) to write the script and have also signed up Adrian Askarieh to be the producer.
Like Turistas, the movie will be set in a paradisiacal scenery and in the case of Just Cause, a Carribean Tropical Island named "San Esperito". But that's where the similarity ends. Just Cause is a high flying action game loaded with impossible stunts.

L+E Pictures has optioned the film rights to the over-the-top spy action video game franchise "Just Cause" reports Variety.
Rodriguez frequently uses both a grappling hook and retractable parachute to perform death-defying stunts that utterly defy the laws of physics.
From hijacking fighter planes in mid-air to a chase/boss battle that takes place on the back of four freshly launched nuclear missiles, the series earned strong reviews for its fun and impressive open world scale.

Michael Ross has come aboard to write the action thriller "Disavowed" for CBS Films.
Irwin Winkler ("Home of the Brave") is producing the film, originally written by Philip Shelby, about a group of military prisoners in the U.S. secretly dispatched to the African nation of Eritrea to retrieve a bio-chemical weapon that has gone missing. If the group is successful in keeping it out of the wrong hands, the convicts' prison sentences will be commuted.
"It's a really exciting and simple premise," said Ross. "I want to honor that and make a really fun and engaging action movie. That's the goal, is to make it moment-to-moment exciting, take advantage of the location and the simplicity of the plot and the opportunity to work within a really fun genre, which is the man-on-a-mission movie."
Ross, who is repped by Gersh and Management 360, wrote the screenplay for the Fox Atomic horror film "Turistas.

Sean and Bryan Furst, the producing team-turned-Overture execs, are transitioning to a production deal with the Liberty Media studio.
The brothers' first producing project for Overture, to be made under their rebooted Furst Films banner, will be the thriller "Jar City," on which the pair has come aboard as producers. Overture is developing a remake of the Icelandic-language film, a cult favorite from Baltasar Kormakur that centers on a murder investigation in a small town, with Michael Ross writing the script.
The Fursts made their name as producers on such pictures as Miramax's hitman drama "The Matador" and Lionsgate's Vegas love story "The Cooler," which earned Alec Baldwin an Oscar nomination.

We mentioned in passing a couple of weeks ago that Clive Owen appeared to have a big year ahead of him, with The International and Duplicity both hitting theaters before the summer. Considering his last film was over a year ago, this is welcome news.
And if you're a fan, you might think his next movie sounds cool, too: Clive will play an undercover agent at the center of the center of the world's cocaine trade in Cartagena. The film is named for a Colombian city, and if you don't know, the good blow comes from Colombia. I'm not advocating, but facts is facts. I'm not sure if Cartagena is a major player in the drug industry, but you'd think so, given that they're naming a movie about drugs after it.

It's common knowledge that Clive Owen was very much in the running to be the new James Bond, and was passed over for that hunk of man Daniel Craig. So now Owen seems intent on proving that he's just as much international man of mystery as the next guy. He's already starring in the upcoming thriller The International, and now he's on board for Catagena, an adventure about an undercover drug agent investigating Colombian cartels. THR says Turistas writer Michael Ross will handle the screenplay, which tells us... well, nothing. What can the possible connection between these stories? Either way, Clive Owen will be involved, which means people like me will be seeing it pretty much no matter what. I wish Owen didn't feel he had so much to prove in terms of badassery, and would take on roles that were just a bit more varied. But still, Clive Owen...

Colombia's dangerous drug cartels are skeee-rewed! The Hollywood Reporter posts that Clive Owen is teaming up with Mark Cuban and heading to Colombia to take on drug cartels in Cartagena.
Turistas scribe Michael Ross is attached to write the screenplay, which focuses on an undercover agent who is embroiled in "a complex plot and must elude drug dealers and international agents if he hopes to survive." Okay, so maybe the cartels aren't screwed if Owen is running from them, but I don't think Clive will have any problem surviving these guys. If he does, they just have to give him a bunch of carrots and a baby to watch out for.
I'm sure this will be entertaining, but it's about time that Mr. Owen got that epic role -- the Indy/McClane/etc sort of blockbuster that gives him an iconic figure that's all his. He's certainly earned it by now.

A little bit of last minute casting news. Clive Owen has joined a project called Cartagena being produced by Marc Butan and Nick Wechsler for 2929 Productions. Editor and screenwriter Michael Ross, who wrote Turistas and the upcoming Jar City remake, is writing the screenplay for Cartagena. Columbia is becoming a key location for upcoming projects, including at least Joe Carnahan's Killing Pablo and Antoine Fuqua's Escobar. As for Clive Owen, I'm glad to hear he's still getting high profile projects like this, despite he's been starring in movies that turn out to be box office duds...
