The BBC has revealed more details about this year’s Comic Relief telethon, which will be broadcast on 15th March on BBC One.
Comic Relief launched in 1985 with a telethon that has since become embedded in British culture. Known as Red Nose Day, on account of the red noses sold as part of the appeal, over the years this has led to many classic comic moments, from The Young Ones singing Livin’ Doll with Cliff Richard, to Johnny Depp and Sting appearing in The Vicar Of Dibley, to Billy Connolly running naked through Trafalgar Square and Mr Bean infiltrating both Blind Date, and a Torvill and Dean dance routine.
Lenny Henry, who co-founded Comic Relief with Richard Curtis, recently revealed that he will be stepping down as host after this year’s telethon. Henry said of his decision that “when we first started Comic Relief back in 1985, I never dreamed...

Before Blu-ray or DVD, before you could just open up an app on your phone and stream things, there was the beloved VHS tape, that most bulky of physical media. Whether you rented them from Blockbuster, owned a library of them and organized them neatly in the shelves running alongside your home entertainment center, used them to record your favorite movies or TV shows, or simply prayed for your teacher to pull one out on a Friday afternoon in middle school, the VHS tape was king of ’80s and ’90s home media.
There was simply nothing better than the experience that came with popping one of these bad boys into your Vcr — unless the film was a stinker, of course, but then again, you probably still at least remember watching it, unlike so much of the mindless filler on today’s streamers. In fact, let’s take a stroll down...

Throughout their time as a group, The Beatles received praise for the way they pushed musical boundaries with their songs and albums. This has earned them a permanent place in the musical canon. As they were releasing songs, though, it occasionally brought them ridicule. While listening to a new Beatles song, a friend responded with disbelief. He thought it sounded like a joke.
Paul McCartney said friends couldn’t believe the sound of one Beatles song
In 1965, The Beatles released Rubber Soul. The album marked a shift for the band into more introspective, mature songs. When the band played one of the album’s songs, “Michelle,” for a friend, though, he responded with confusion.
“We’d just put out ‘Michelle,’ and I remember one night at the Ad Lib club David Bailey hearing it and saying, ‘You’ve got to be joking — it is tongue in cheek, isn’t it?...

Veteran singer Cliff Richard still wants to try out new things for his career such as cracking the American charts and is reportedly eyeing duets with major American artistes with Taylor Swift in his sights.
The singer seems to be planning to pull a leaf out of the books of Sir Elton John and Sir Tom Jones who have often collaborated with younger singers to keep them relevant with Sir Elton having a number one hit with Dua Lipa and Sir Tom teaming up with The Stereophonics and The Cardigans.
However, he seems to be waiting for 34-year-old Taylor to call him rather than him calling her, reports mirror.co.uk.
He told The Sun: “She’s the biggest artist on the planet. If she asked me, I’d say, ‘Yes please’, because I’m sure it would be a big hit. And it might be an introduction for me...

The race to be top of the British singles chart at Christmas has been an annual event every December since 1952.
On Friday 23, LadBaby broke a record they were previously tied for with The Beatles, achieving their fifth consecutive Christmas No 1.
The Beatles had been top of the tree since 1967 with a record four Christmas number ones, although that was equalled last year when LadBaby claimed their fourth win in four years with an offering called “Sausage Rolls for Everyone”.
LadBaby have now vaulted to the top with their fifth No 1, “Food Aid”.
The Spice Girls also notched an impressive three consecutive victories in the mid-Nineties, while Sir Cliff Richard also has a hat-trick to his name.

This review originally ran September 3, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
If you’re a fan of a particular era of British rock ’n’ roll, this was the right year to be at the Telluride Film Festival. Every year we hear the same Christmas songs again and again and again, the playlist seldom changing.
While the supermarkets might stick rigidly to Slade and Wizzard, and the high street coffee shops prefer the gingerbread-and-eggnog stylings of Michael Buble, Norah Jones or the Rat Pack, variation is minimal and certain tracks just will not go away.
You might wonder how much cash the writers of the more ubiquitous seasonal standards squirrel away every year and whether it’s really possible to live on the royalties.
In Nick Hornby’s novel About a Boy (1998), Will Freeman does precisely that, living an agreeably idle bachelor life on the proceeds of a festive single written by his late father.
The truth is, it’s hard to say for sure precisely how much The Pogues or Mariah Carey have coined from their work as the Performing Right Society (Prs) does not reveal the...

The 82-year-old, who released his new Christmas album Christmas with Cliff last week, also poked fun at artists who announce they’re retiring only to make a comeback soon after.
“We’ve all known artists who retire and then they make four or five comebacks,” Richard told This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on Tuesday 29 November.
“Everytime they make a comeback, I think ‘they’ve run out of money,’ he joked. “And I don’t want anyone to think that about me!”
The singer recently announced an eight-date tour for winter 2023, which includes six nights at the Eventim Apollo in London.
There will also be a show in Blackpool and another in Glasgow. Tickets are available here.

Everybody seems to love Harry Styles. The 28-year-old British heartthrob ,who initially scored huge success as a member of the boy band One Direction before going solo six years ago, won a Grammy last year for best pop solo performance for “Watermelon Sugar.” And he’s up for a total of six this year for his hit single “As It Was” and album “Harry’s House.” And it’s hard not to miss footage of his energetic concerts filled with screaming women of all ages on TikTok.
Though there were two One Direction concert films, Styles has shied away from rock and rolling on the silver screen rather appearing as a World War II soldier in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2017 “Dunkirk” and starring in two high-profile films this fall: Olivia Wilde’s “Stepford Wives”-style thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the romantic drama “My Policeman.” In the later, he gives...

Google, it is reported, offers employees gourmet dining experiences on its campus. Apple, meanwhile, hired Stevie Wonder to play for its workforce. If the BBC is considering introducing a new employee perk to energise its staff, I’d like to suggest complimentary couples counselling. After the critically acclaimed misery of Stefan Golaszewski’s Marriage last month, comes the lighter companion piece, Stuck, a sitcom about the claustrophobia of cohabitation.

Harry Styles has referenced the recent rumours that he “spat” on his Don’t Worry Darling co-star Chris Pine.
On Monday (5 September), a brief yet puzzling interaction between the pair at the Venice Film Festival screening of Olivia Wilde’s psychological drama went viral on social media.
In the clip, posted by Twitter user JZMaclin, Styles “appears to spit” on Pine while taking his assigned seat next to the actor, who then looks down at his lap and stops clapping.
Representatives for Pine called the rumours a “complete fabrication”, while sources close to the “As It Was” singer told The Independent that the alleged incident was “not true”.
In his first direct comments about the rumour, Styles quipped about the incident during his return to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night (7 September).
As seen in a video posted on Twitter, Styles jokingly said: “This is our tenth show at Madison Square Garden.

Colin Farrell’s new film, The Banshees of Inisherin, received a 13-minute standing ovation at its premiere.
The Irish actor appears in Martin McDonagh’s film, which premiered out of Venice Film Festival on Monday (5 September), alongside Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon.
According to Variety, McDonagh, Farrell, Gleeson, and Condon were met with the “longest and loudest reception” of any film that premiered at the festival this season.
It was speculated that this might have been in response to Farrell “who broke with tradition by wading into the crowd to take selfies with fans and sign autographs, which only made the cheering grow louder and more sustained”.
The Banshees of Inisherin is directed by Oscar winner McDonagh, who is behind films such as 2008’s In Bruges, which also stars Farrell and Gleeson, 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Missouri, and 2012’s Seven Psychopaths.

Sue Barker has revealed the “frustrating” reason she wishes she’d never “gone near” Cliff Richard, whom she dated in the 1980s.
The broadcaster, who had a brief romance with the “Summer Holiday” singer in 1981, has shared her frustrations with Richard for continuing to “harp on about me” 40 years on.
In a new book, an extract of which was shared on MailOnline, Barker, 66, wrote: “If someone had told me that my relationship with Cliff would last a few months but I’d still be hearing about it 40 years later, I wouldn’t have gone near him.”
She said that, despite remaining friends, “the only thing we fell out over was the fact he kept harping on about me in interviews”.
Barker revealed that, despite their time together being extremely brief, Richard, 81, would repeatedly provide the press with quotes that made their relationship seem more than it actually was. These included:...

Phillip Schofield has responded after a clip of a This Morning call-in game resulted in widespread disapproval on social media.
On Monday’s (5 September) edition of ITV’s daily lifestyle programme, Schofield and co-host Holly Willoughby played a game “Spin To Win”, in which viewers can win a randomly selected prize from a wheel.
One of the new additions to the prize list, along with cash, was the programme covering the winner’s energy bills for four months as a way to help with the cost of living crisis.
Monday’s caller ultimately won the energy bills prize and audibly reacted with relief as he described dealing with his current bills as “absolutely murder”.
After the clip was uploaded online, thousands of people used social media to express shock that energy bill payment was being offered as a prize, with many calling the state of affairs “dystopian”.

Joe Lycett has been criticised by a Tory MP in parliament following an interview in which the comedian claimed to be “extremely right wing”.
On Sunday (4 September), the comedian appeared on the first episode of Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, during which he cheered and shouted: “You smashed it, Liz,” following an interview with Liz Truss.
He then said: “I know there’s been criticism in The Mail on Sunday today about leftie liberal wokie comedians on the BBC. I’m actually very right wing and I love it. I thought she gave great clear answers. I know exactly what she’s up to.”
During Tuesday morning’s (6 September) digital, culture, media and support committee meeting in parliament, BBC director general Tim Davie was criticised by Conservative MP Steve Brine over the interview.

A retired couple were left in shock as their collection of rare banknotes fetched more than £51,000 on Cash in the Attic.
The Channel 5 show helps people try to sell potential hidden treasures from their homes at auction.
During Monday (5 September) night’s episode, former builder Vic Witt and his wife Janet appeared on the show with a collection of banknotes dating back to 1916 and 1918.
The couple explained that they discovered the money in a tin beneath some stairs while renovating their home in Beaminster, Dorset, 32 years ago.
Janet applied to appear on the show in the hope that the notes would sell for £3,000, allowing her to take 11 members of her family on holiday for their diamond wedding anniversary.
However, the couple were flabberghasted to see that the first note alone sold for £8,000, while three £5 notes with consecutive serial numbers were sold as one lot for £16,000.

Co-creator Ryan Condal will now serve as the show’s sole showrunner.
Appearing on EW’s West of Westeros podcast, Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryon in the spin-off series, said that he had been left “shocked” and “disappointed” by the news.

Sir Cliff Richard has announced the forthcoming release of his first Christmas album in nearly 20 years.
Christmas with Cliff will drop one month before the holiday, on 25 November this year. The album is comprised of 13 tracks, including festive hits such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Jingle Bell Rock”, as well as new songs.
Richard, whose last Christmas album was released in 2003, credited producers Sam Hollander and Chris Walden for “guiding me through the ‘well known’ Christmas songs and freeing me to sing them my way,” in a statement.
He added: “They had differing approaches to the songs that I asked them to produce for me, and they gave this album the dynamics that I had hoped for.”
Ultimately, Richard concluded, the new album is “not just mine... it belongs to all of us involved in creating it”.
“I hope that we add a little something special to your Christmas season,” he said.

Joe Lycett has left TV viewers in hysterics by claiming to be a “right-wing” Tory supporter while discussing politics on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
The comedian was on the latest episode of the BBC series (4 September) alongside former No 10 staffer Cleo Watson and Labour’s Emily Thornberry, and watched on as Kuenssberg interviewed Boris Johnson’s potential prime minister replacement, Liz Truss, live in the studio.
After Kuenssberg’s interview with Truss came to an end, Lycett could be heard cheering off-screen, shouting: “You smashed it, Liz!”

Dave Grohl fans were left in tears as the musician started crying during a Foo Fighters performance at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert.
The fundraiser event was held in honour of the 50-year-old drummer, who was found dead in his Colombia hotel room in March.
Fans flocked to London’s Wembley Stadium for the six-hour long concert, which saw Grohl joined by many stars, including Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Mark Ronson and Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis.
In the most memorable moment from the event, Hawkins’ 16-year-old son Oliver Shane “crushed” a performance of Foo Fighters track “My Hero” after drumming in his late dad’s spot.
It all got too much for Grohl, though, who was commended for his energy during what must have been an extremely challenging day.
He found himself overcome with emotion during a Foo Fighters performance of “Times Like These”.

‘It’s like suing Britain’: Cliff Richard says he hesitated before suing BBC over police raid filming
Cliff Richard has opened up about the impact of being investigated for historic sex crimes.
The musician was accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy during a religious rally at Sheffield United Football club in 1985.
In 2014, Richard’s home was searched by police as part of the Operation Yewtree investigation. However, he was not arrested and has always strongly denied the allegations.
In October 2016, Richard sued the BBC and South Yorkshire Police for invasion of privacy and misuse of private information.
The incident is the subject of The Accused: National Treasures on Trial, a new Channel 4 documentary airing on Wednesday (23 August).
It sees three household names, who were accused, but either never arrested, charged or convicted, reveal what it was like to be caught in the eye of the storm: Richard, DJ Paul Gambaccini and former Pop Idol judge Neil Fox.
Speaking about being under investigation, Richard said: “You cannot stop thinking about it.

The botched Operation Yewtree investigation, which sought to bring to light historic sex offences perpetrated by British celebrities in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal, is set to be examined in a new Channel 4 documentary.
Singer Cliff Richard, radio DJ Paul Gambaccini and former “Pop Idol” judge Neil Fox were among those publicly accused of historic sex crimes during the operation, which launched 10 years ago. None of them were ever convicted of any crimes.
Richard went on to sue the BBC for invasion of privacy after the network broadcast a police raid of his home during the operation. He was awarded £210,000 in damages and over £2 million (2.4 million) in legal costs, although he said the sum didn’t cover the full cost of the legal bills he incurred in a bid to clear his name.

Sir Cliff Richard and two other British entertainers accused but never convicted of sex crimes are to take part in a Channel 4 documentary marking a decade since Operation Yewtree.
National treasure Richard was famously accused by a man of sexual assault but Richard was never charged and went on to win £2M (2.4M) from a BBC settlement, after BBC News sent a helicopter to cover police raiding his Berkshire home.
He will contribute to Curious Films’ The Accused: National Treasures on Trial alongside Pop Idol judge Neil Fox and DJ Paul Gambaccini, all of whom were accused but never arrested.
Led by their personal stories and experiences of being investigated, while in the full glare of the national media, including video diaries recorded with Gambaccini and Fox at the time, the documentary explores the immediate and longer-lasting impact the process had on them, their families, careers and reputations.

Monty Norman, the British composer who wrote the propulsive theme for the James Bond films, died Monday after a short illness, according to a post on his official website. He was 94.
Producer Cubby Broccoli, who had worked with Norman by backing the stage musical Belle, about murderer Hawley Crippen, asked the composer to come up with the score for the first Bond film, Dr. No (1962), after he and Harry Saltzman had acquired the rights to Ian Fleming’s spy.
The deal was sealed when the producers offered to fly Norman and his then-wife, actress-singer Diana Coupland, to Jamaica, where the movie was being filmed, all expenses paid. “Well, that was the clincher for me!” Norman said in a story posted on his website. “I thought, even if Dr. No turns out to be a stinker, at least we’d have sun, sea and sand to show for it!
