The Simpsons Season 34 Episode 16
The Simpsons separates facts from the state and brings down the whole gazebo. “Hostile Kirk Place” will be a divisive episode, possibly threatening closed-captioning in Florida, as Kirk Van Houten declares war on words.
Matt Selman acts like he’s got tenure on The Simpsons, the way he pushes the curriculum ever more cleverly into commentary. This episode isn’t meant to divide red from blue but cartoon fans from comedy geeks. There are so many lines which have double meaning, and yet the ones that pack the most punch are brutally single minded. In one exchange, Professor Frink is asked to dumb something he said down so everyone can understand. He desperately replies, “I am dumbing it down.” This also succinctly explains subtle differences between the wit and the humor at the heart of The Simpsons.

Could The Simpsons potentially crossover with Marvel? One executive producer says they might travel from Springfield to Wakanda!
“Ever since Disney bought 20th Century Fox, The Simpsons has been the smiling face of that monopolistic corporate synergy. The long-running series was a key Disney+ offering at launch — despite some questionable cropping — and we’ve already seen at least one member of the Simpsons clan interact with the Star Wars universe. So will the Simpsons make a trip to the Marvel Cinematic Universe next? According to Simpsons co-executive producer Michael Price, it’s very possible.”

Focus Features is developing Rachel Maddow’s Bag Man as a feature film with Ben Stiller directing. Bag Man is based on Rachel Maddow’s podcast about the true story of one of the most brazen political bribery scandals in American history, which played out before the country while nobody was paying attention. Composer David Arnold explains how the music for the BBC’s new Dracula series incorporates suitably macabre horror elements…
Sherlock composers David Arnold and Michael Price faced “a very particular problem” when creating the score for Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula – the inscrutable nature of the title character.
Speaking at the three-part series’ BFI Southbank launch, Arnold likened Dracula to the shark in Spielberg’s Jaws. “You don’t know anything about him, but he’s there representing something awful.” This adaptation, says Arnold, creates “a much more complex Dracula,” taking him out of the shadows and putting his personality and particular methodology to the fore.
“To have [Dracula] front and center gave us a very particular problem,” Arnold explained, “because the theme for Jaws is very much not really about the shark, it’s about what happens to you when he gets you.

At the launch of the BBC’s Dracula, airing this New Year, here’s what its cast and creators shared about their new 3-part drama…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
It won’t all be tinsel and Aled Jones on TV this festive season. To balance out the sweetness, BBC One has prepared us a dread delight in the form of a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. It comes from Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, who’ve turned their attention from the most-filmed fictional character of all time to the second most-filmed fictional character of all time. What kind of adaptation is it? One that’s both funny and horrifying, paying homage to what’s gone before while delivering a swaggeringly confident new take on the source material – which is more varied than one might think, as Moffat pointed out at the launch.
At the launch of the BBC’s Dracula, airing this New Year, here’s what its cast and creators shared about their new 3-part drama…

Could David Arnold return as composer to the James Bond series?
It was the obvious question to pose while he was talking about Amazon’s new “Good Omens” miniseries, for which he has composed the elaborate score.
“It’s a no-news situation,” Arnold told Variety about 007. “I’ve heard nothing. But my pencil is always sharpened for him if James comes around again. But if he doesn’t, I’ll be as excited to watch the new film as anyone else. I still love him, and I love all of the team over there.”
Arnold composed the scores for five consecutive Bond films: three with Pierce Brosnan and two starring Daniel Craig.
With singer Chris Cornell, he co-wrote “You Know My Name,” the theme song for “Casino Royale,” and earned a Grammy nomination for it; he also received a BAFTA nomination for that score.

From the BBC's Sherlock, through Disney, Hans Zimmer and Young Sherlock Holmes: we salute the music of Mr Holmes...
Few characters have enjoyed as much reinvention as Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth Sherlock Holmes, an enduring icon who is as much bound up with the history of cinema (and indeed stage, TV and radio) as he is with literature. Indeed, adaptations of Holmes stories stretch right the way back to the earliest days of film at the start of the 20th century. Fittingly enough given Holmes' penchant for a violin serenade, the musical scores to his adventures are as richly varied as the outcomes to his mysteries are unexpected. Here are Holmes' musical highlights, from Buster Keaton through to Benedict Cumberbatch.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Not, strictly speaking, a Sherlock movie but as the title implies, the legacy of the character casts a long shadow over Buster Keaton's silent classic.

Screen Producers Australia hopes to reach agreement with the other major guilds on a new scheme for low budget features within the next few months.
Spa is proposing that all participants- producers, directors, writers, cast and crew- would receive 50% of their minimum award fees, reinvest the balance and thus share in the potential profits.
The scheme would apply to features costing less than $1.5 million which would not be eligible for Screen Australia funding but could qualify for the producer offset.. Producers would pay the employees' tax obligations based on the minimum rates.
The aims are to boost the level of feature production, which has barely changed in 30 years; enable cheaper films to be made on a far more professional basis; and provide a pathway for a new generation of writers and talent.

David Arnold has ruled out composing music for Doctor Who despite his close working relationship with Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
Arnold arranged a new version of the Doctor Who theme in 2001 for the Eighth Doctor audio dramas from Big Finish Productions.
The musical world of Doctor Who: From Ron Grainer to The Klf
Together with Michael Price, Arnold composes the music for Moffat and Gatiss's Sherlock on the BBC.
"It was weird when I did the Big Finish one," Arnold told Digital Spy ahead of his collaboration with Ella Eyre for the Bose Urban Conductor immersive live experience.
"Mark Gatiss I've known for years and years and years. This was pre-the Russell T Davies resurgence of popularity.
"Doctor Who was kind of dead in the water in a way, as far as TV was concerned, after Michael Grade had announced that it would never happen again."

Poznan, Poland— Michael Price gets around. The British composer leaves Poznan today after being one of the featured speakers at the Transatlantyk Festival, a week-long event dedicated to film, music, and cuisine, to head straight to Los Angeles for the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday (16). Price is nominated for the first time for Outstanding music composition for a miniseries, movie or a special (original dramatic score) for “Sherlock,” the BBC series he composes music for with David Arnold. Price apprenticed with a number of composers, but he also worked as a music editor for years, on such films as “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “Love Actually,” and “Nanny McPhee.” I hopped in a car with Price to interview him on our way to Transatlantyk’s closing gala. You started as an assistant for the late composer Michael Kamen ("Brazil,""Band Of Brothers," "Lethal Weapon," "Mr. Holland's Opus"), who...

Poznan, Poland—Jan Kaczmarek is ready to get back to his first love. The composer, who took home the Oscar in 2004/ for scoring “Finding Neverland,” shifted his focus for the last several years to creating Transatlantyk here in Poznan, in his native Poland. In its fourth year, the week-long “festival of ideas” continues to draw top composers and filmmakers and other creative talents who join together for screenings, thoughtful discussions, concerts and much more. Kaczmarek has managed to squeeze in the occasional film score, such as this year’s German film, “Inbetween Worlds,” but it’s been a while since he has scored a Hollywood film, such as 2002’s “”Unfaithful.” or “2007’s “The Visitor,” or 2009’s “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.” Most recently, he wrote an opera commissioned by Poland's Jagiellonian University that premiered in front of 14,000. His first step is to get back to Los Angeles —he splits his...

While a great show must have good writing, talented actors, impeccable lighting, innovative visuals and so much more, the key to the tone of a show is the music. Music can be used to raise the tension in a thrilling action sequence or build the emotion within a dramatic reveal; it can set the viewer’s blood pounding or reduce them to tears. In sum, the best shows have the best and most powerful music, and Sherlock is no exception.
Courtesy of composers David Arnold (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Independence Day) and Michael Price (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), we have been treated to many a brilliant and gorgeous score through Sherlock’s past three series. Its theme tune has become almost as recognisable as its idiosyncratic visual style, and the soundtrack for Series 3 may be its best and most inventive yet, with its foray into electronic music,...

The writer of the scores for Quantum of Solace, Hot Fuzz and more how he tackles his work – and what John Barry told him
David Arnold, the James Bond composer and musical director of the London Olympics closing ceremony, is talking ghosts. The north London studios where we meet, he tells me, are haunted. Doors slam shut and footsteps are heard in studios that he knows to be empty.
In one part of the building – a former school and church – electrical equipment never works and people report sightings of two spectral schoolchildren dressed in Victorian clothing. "I'm halfway between being a real cynic and totally convinced by it," says Arnold. Our conversation is made more disconcerting by the lights switching off every 15 minutes (an eco-friendly device, not an otherwordly one).

We tot up the facts, rumours, and spoilers circulating about Sherlock’s currently filming third series…
Spoiler warning: we've tried to structure this in a way that means those who want to avoid spoilers, can.
The answer to that question, like most, depends very much on whom you ask. Pose it to the average, non-tv obsessed fellow in the street and they might reply, Sherlock, that’s the one with the flappy coated chap and him from The Office who’s now him from The Hobbit. They’re doing a third series? That’s grand, that. The wife’ll be pleased.
Burrow further into Sherlock fandom and ask someone familiar with the #setlock hashtag and the Purple Shirt of Sex though, and you’ll likely receive not just an answer, but a shooting schedule, a Tumblr of set-visit snaps, and a PowerPoint presentation...

If you haven’t indulged in the brilliant modern day take on the Holmes stories, then you are truly missing out on a well-crafted and intelligent program. The series is created and run by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Doctor Who), and transposes some of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s finest stories into a modern day thriller, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit, Star Trek 2) as Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Office UK, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) as his faithful companion Doctor John Watson. Though there is some creative license taken to bring the stories into the modern day, the spirit of the original tales is there, and the two leads work very well off of each other, making Holmes and Watson feel right at home in 21st Century London.

A review of soundtracks released May 8, 2012 including films based on soap operas and board games (seriously?) plus a British television series based on a classic character. Aren’t there any original ideas anymore!?!
Dark Shadows: Original Score by Danny Elfman
Dark Shadows marks the fourteenth time Danny Elfman has scored a Tim Burton film (and sixth with Johnny Depp). The two came together for Burton’s first feature-length film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in 1985 and have since both gone on to have prominent careers. Their latest collaboration, Dark Shadows, is a remake of a soap opera that aired from 1966-1971. The original score features the usual gothic orchestral sounds that are associated with Elfman. One thing that makes this unique from previous Elfman scores is the sometimes use of synthesizers to provide a 70’s vibe, like on the track “Shadows (Reprise).” Elfman also manages to incorporate the original theme...

Calling your first film ‘the world’s first psycho-comedy’ is a sure sign that you know you have something special on your hands and with A Fantastic Fear of Everything director Crispian Mills’ vision of a man possessed by his own imagination is finally committed to film with an eye to a Summer release date.
When we visited the set at Pinewood last year the director was busying himself in the incredibly detailed surrounds of the world he had spent five years creating, a world in which Simon Pegg’s Jack is rapidly losing himself while doing research for a script about a serial killer. Mills too was lost within the muddled miscellany of his set and it would be a few months before he had emerged from the shoot to talk about the history of the film, how it evolved over time and just how difficult it is to get a film made today.

Many films focus on the proposal, the engagement, the planning or the actual wedding, but few take a look at the anxious hours in anticipation of the holy matrimony. In the UK production Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, this anxiety is weighty, as an unrequited romance is lamented between the bride Dolly (Felicity Jones) and fleeting companion Joseph (Luke Treadaway). Making his feature debut, director Donald Rice has created a pleasant portrait of attachment and its effects, with a main relationship that is a breeze to become invested in.
“A short engagement makes for a long marriage,” remarks Dolly’s mother (Elizabeth McGovern), one of the many family members scurrying about this mansion. Despite a passionate previous summer with Joseph, told in smartly structured warm-colored flashbacks, Dolly is set to marry another man whom she only recently committed to on this March day, captured with a cold palette. Review: It’s been a while since a breezy, British action comedy has arrived on U.S. shores; their heyday being in the ‘80s when such titles like “A Fish Called Wanda” and “Time Bandits” held their place on the marquee.
When it comes to mobsters, guns and laughs, British director Jonathan Lynn knows a thing or two about crafting a crowd pleasing caper. Lynn is so good at it, Hollywood tapped him for his stylings with “The Whole Nine Yards,” “Sgt. Bilko” and “My Cousin Vinny.” With “Wild Target,” Lynn comfortably returns to the London stomping ground which he made famous with the...

It must be fantastic to be Steven Moffat right now. His first season as Executive Producer of Doctor Who has been exceptionally well received; he’s the writer for the Steven Spielberg produced The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and last night, his new show Sherlock started on BBC One.
Sherlock, an update of the classic Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, stars Benedict Cumberbatch as our eponymous sleuth and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Last night’s first episode, A Study in Pink, was an update of the very first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet. The update looks so effortless; one imagines it involved a great deal of blood sweat and tears from Moffat. Using key elements from the original story, Holmes is called in by Detective Inspector Lestrade (a put-upon Rupert Graves) to investigate four apparent suicides. Each victim has taken...

Thanks to Laura we have a great video of composure Michael Price working on Rupert Grint's film "Wild Target". Unfortunately there is nothing new and they say nothing about Rupert or the character he plays. However while you see the orchestra setting a scene to music you can catch a quick glimpse of Rupert in a scene. It is rather small but definitely there! You can view the video here. They mention they believe the film to come out in "October/November" in the UK and the rest of the world in the beginning of the year. They obviously meant this year's October/November but seeing how that has passed, that obviously isn't the case. But we do learn that this will be a fairly large UK film!
