Buenos Aires-based sales and production company FilmSharks International has scored a number of deals with South Korea, France and Italy in recent days.
South Korean indie film distributor Bluelable Pictures picked up all rights to erotic thriller “Bandit Love” and plans a wide theatrical release. It also snagged rights to “Ghosting Gloria,” the Uruguayan supernatural erotic comedy, which FilmSharks snapped up all sales and remake rights to in June last year.
“FilmSharks brings the finest South American films to every market; I will continue to introduce such outstanding and dynamic South American films to Korean audiences,” said Bluelable’s Won Young Choi.

The Austin Film Festival said Friday that Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life, the Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s The Truth will be in the lineup for the 26th annual fest, which is set for October 24-31.

The Redentor awards were handed out at Espaco Cultural Bnds, where The Other End also received the best actress prize for Karine Teles, who stars in the unusual love story between a teenage boy and the female patient of his psychoanalyst mother.
The Other End explores the idea that love can be found in unexpected places with irony and lightness. Sholl dealt with a similar theme in Tá (2007), the winner of the Teddy award for best short film at Berlinale that centres on two young men who meet in a public bathroom.

The Brazilian promotional body will attend the Efm for the tenth consecutive year to talk up a slate of national films that includes Panorama selections Time Was Endless and Don’t Call Me Son.
Cinema do Brasil, which works with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency and has support from the audiovisual department of the Ministry Of Culture to champion home-grown fare, will be in Berlin representing a delegation of 32 companies.

The Première Brasil competition section will screen 13 features, of which ten will receive world premieres. An additional two features and two documentaries will screen out of competition.
Other Brazilian productions such as a restoration of Walter Lima Jr’s 1965 classic Menino de Engenho (Plantation Boy) will screen in special Première Brasil sidebars such as New Trends, Panorama, Expectation and Fronteiras.
Première Brasil is the only competitive section of the festival and Redentors will be presented on closing night. The audience will vote on three awards for best Brazilian feature film, best documentary and best short film.
As part of this years commemoration of the 450 years of the founding of Rio, the festival will screen six films that have the city as its setting or reflect the theme of Rio...

★★★★☆ Once in a while, a thoroughly decent feature will inexplicably slip through the distribution net and find itself unceremoniously dumped onto home video with little promotion or fanfare. Artificial Paradises (not to be confused with the 2011 Mexican feature of the same name) is one of those films. It doesn't help that it's being marketed as a drug-smuggling drama, either. In reality, this element is barely touched upon (the trailer gives the impression it's some kind of sweaty-palmed, downbeat Midnight Express-like effort). There are darker elements inherent in the film, but it's counterbalanced by a sexy and sensual vibe.

As an effort to promote her brand new song "Don't Believe in Love", Dido premieres a music video for the single. Shot in a ranch near Los Angeles and produced by AlexandLiane, the video views Dido sitting in a silence with a man on a dining room with none of them trying to be courteous.
As the video progresses, it displays more about Dido's loneliness. She is captured lying on the grass outside her house, wandering around the house alone, and then spending her day with nothing to do just standing by the window and staring at the street in front of the house while her man is watching her in the same silence.

Paramount Picures has signed a co-production deal with Brazil's Zazen Prods. for two films, "Paraisos Artifciais" and "Nunca Antes na Historia deste Pais," to be shot in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
The films will be directed by Zazen partners Jose Padhila and Marcos Prado.
Paramount Pictures Brazil and Paramount Home Entertainment Brazil will manage the deal, which was announced Thursday at the Rio Film Festival.

BERLIN -- In Jose Padilha's crude and violent film The Elite Squad, the pope is visiting Rio de Janeiro and he needs a good night's sleep, so the local police commander sends his crack troops into the closest slum to kill everybody.
Well, not everybody, but all the drug-dealing scum his specially trained officers can find and by any means possible, preferably a high-powered rifle. It means there will be blood and lots of it, all captured by a dizzying hand-held camera racing through some of the worst cases of urban blight on the planet.
Poorly structured and at times incoherent, what boxoffice appeal the film has will rely on its sheer pace and the amount of torture and killing that goes on, so it should do fine.
The basic assumption of the script by Padilha, Rodrigo Pimentel and Braulio Mantovaniis that everyone in Rio is corrupt, especially the authorities. Policemen accept bribes for whatever pays the most: do their jobs or turn a blind eye. They even steal the engines from their own squad cars, sell them and put a piece of junk under the hood instead.
Capt. Nascimento (Wagner Moura) is a cop with integrity, but it's driving him crazy as he risks his life daily battling bad guys in and out of uniform. Plus he has a pregnant wife at home who wishes he would quit.
He's trying hard to accommodate her wish, but he needs to find a replacement to take over command of the elite squad. Since everyone else has been compromised he settles on two rookies who have been best friends since childhood, the brave but hair-triggered Neto (Caio Junqueira) and the cautious but shrewd Matias (Andre Ramiro).
For some reason their work involves getting second jobs so that Neto works at the police auto shop while Matias goes to law school. Neto's commitment leads him to devise a way of intercepting payoffs drug dealers make to the local commander and using the money to supply the squad cars with desperately needed new parts.
Matias hides the fact that he's a cop from the other students, including pretty Maria Fernanda Machado) and takes no action when they fire up joints.
Both situations lead to dangerous complications, though the story is told in a confusing mix of time-shifting flashbacks, and at the end there's still no sign of the pope.
Before they can join the elite squad, however, Neto and Matias have to make it through an odd sort of training camp that involves ritual humiliation. Then, they're handed high-powered rifles and sent into the slums to kill everybody.
