Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds are ringing in the holidays with a new musical. Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for “Spirited,” an upcoming Christmas movie that sees the two comedic actors teaming up — and squaring off in a tap-dancing battle.
Based on Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol,” “Spirited” focuses on the Ghost of Christmas Present, portrayed in the original story as a Father Christmas-esque figure. In the (mostly) streaming film, Ferrell plays the spirit, who spends every year selecting a new corrupted person to be visited by him and the ghosts of Christmases Past and Future. However, when he chooses Clint Briggs (Reynolds) as the ghosts’ new project, he winds up getting the script flipped on him by the savvy businessman, who forces the spirit to go through his own past, present, and future.

Remakes, reboots, reimaginings. Hollywood is obsessed with the "re-ification" — yeah, I'm copyrighting that — of the industry, and whenever there's an opportunity to bring a franchise or original property back from the dead and spend a lot of unnecessary money on it, they do it. In that vein, Apple Original Films released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming holiday musical comedy, "Spirited," starring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to Ferrell, a period ghost visiting Reynolds, a modern man who is more than surprised to find that the Charles Dickens novel has some truth to it. According to a press release, the film's synopsis reads:
Each Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) selects one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits. But this season, he picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) turns the...

Move over Chewbacca. Harrison Ford has a new furry companion in his latest movie “The Call of the Wild.”
Ford stars opposite a CGI dog named Buck, specifically a St. Bernard and Scotch Collie mix, in 20th Century Fox’s new film based on the classic novel by Jack London. And their journey through the Alaskan Yukon has Ford breathless.
“Adventure of a lifetime,” Ford tells his canine sidekick as they stare out into the wilderness. “You’ve been sleeping for two days. In my bed,” he adds.

“The Call of the Wild” opted for CGI, photo-realistic animal characters in order to provide them with the full range of emotion that London characterizes in his novel. But the film is a live-action and animation hybrid with impressive vistas and visual effects all the same.

Over the decades, “Call of the Wild” has inspired everything from a silent movie to a Snoopy TV special.
Chris Sanders (“The Croods”) is directing the film, which will have a script by Michael Green (“Logan”). Erwin Stoff is producing with Diana Pokorny serving as executive producer and Ryan Stafford working as co-producer. Steve Asbell will oversee the production for Fox.

Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig star in comedy from Sideways director.
Alexander Payne’s Downsizing will have its world premiere as the opening film of the 74th Venice Film Festival (Aug 30 – Sept 9).
Starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Kristen Wiig, the comedy follows a Us couple who undergo a controversial procedure, developed as a response to the world’s overpopulation crisis, that shrinks human beings to five inches tall.
Sideways and The Descendants director Payne co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Taylor, who also produced alongside Payne with Mark Johnson. Executive producers are Megan Ellison, Diana Pokorny, and Jim Burke.
Last year’s Venice opener was Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which went on to win six Oscars. The slot has regularly been an early indicator for awards season success, having previously housed Birdman and Gravity.

I’m laughing already. I enjoyed the first film, I’m just not sold on the idea of a sequel yet. So many sequels.

An All-star cast puts a comedy spin on workplace woes in upcoming movie Horrible Bosses, released in UK cinemas on July 22.
For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable managers into dust.
Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers...permanently.
There's only one problem: even the best-laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.
Jason Bateman (Couples Retreat), Charlie Day (Going the Distance) and Jason Sudeikis (Hall Pass) star as the three hapless workers, with Jennifer Aniston (He's Just Not That Into You), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart) and two-time Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects), as their unbearable bosses.

For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers…permanently. There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them. Jason Bateman (“Couples Retreat”), Charlie Day (“Going the Distance”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Hall Pass”) star as the three hapless workers, with Jennifer Aniston (“He’s Just Not That Into You”), Colin Farrell (“Crazy Heart”) and two-time Oscar® winner Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty,” “The Usual Suspects”), as their unbearable bosses. Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) stars as the plotters’ unlikely mentor, whose street cred is priced on a sliding scale.

Not too long ago, Cinematical had a chance to travel to London to visit the set of Inkheart over at Shepperton Studios where stars Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren, Eliza Bennett and Andy Serkis were filming a crucial scene in the film -- one that involved fire, magic, a non-cgi'd Serkis and strange-looking evil men. But we'll come back to that in a little bit. Shepperton Studios is made up of several buildings, and unlike the set of The Golden Compass (which we visited the day before), there wasn't much green screen to be found on this flick. Instead, the Inkheart sets were big, bold and quite beautiful -- one of which felt as if you were walking straight onto a village street, with shops and cobblestones and realistic rooftops.
On the side of this set stood the interior of a medieval-looking cathedral, which runs up about two stories...

This review was written for the theatrical release of "Mr. Woodcock".As "Mr. Woodcock" demonstrates, a great premise can generate a lot of goodwill and almost overcome an uneven script. So too can expert performances, supplied here by Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott as acrimonious competitors. This New Line Cinema release has enough laughs to generate moderate boxoffice business, but it doesn't break past the middling level.
Still, it definitely will touch a nerve with a lot of male viewers. To anyone who wasn't a jock, high school gym class was a special source of dread. This film taps right into those painful memories with its funny opening scene, when the tyrannical gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Thornton), runs roughshod over a bunch of uncoordinated geeks. One of them is chubby John Farley, who cowers when Woodcock singles him out for punishment.
Cut to 15 years later, and Farley (now played by Scott) is the author of a best-selling self-help book titled, "Letting Go: Getting Past Your Past." When he returns to his hometown in Nebraska, he is horrified to learn that his mother (Susan Sarandon) is having hot and heavy sex with his nemesis, Mr. Woodcock, and is engaged to marry him. Farley's initial encounters with his old tormentor suggest that Woodcock remains the same soft-spoken sadist, and Farley sets out to sabotage the wedding plans.
Given the nature of comedies about warring rivals, you know where the story is likely to end. It might have been more refreshing had Woodcock remained a monster from start to finish, but at least he doesn't go all soft and squishy. Thornton has been known to ham it up, but this is an understated, masterfully controlled performance. While he's the epitome of cool, Scott's Farley is the one who goes hysterical. Surprisingly, Scott's performance matches Thornton's; their verbal and physical duels keep us chuckling.
Sarandon, on the other hand, has a rather lackluster role that leaves her stranded. But some of the supporting players are vivid. Ethan Supplee is amusing as an old pal of Farley's who is still terrified of Woodcock's bullying. Amy Poehler's role as a bitchy book publicist is one-dimensional, but she brings a lot of flair to the stock jokes. Bill Macy has a juicy cameo as Mr. Woodcock's even more obnoxious father.
Director Craig Gillespie has another movie opening next month that screened this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, "Lars and the Real Girl", which is a somewhat quirkier comedy. The two movies establish him as a promising comedy director.
"Mr. Woodcock" benefits from a few hilarious sight gags. Technical credits are solid, and while the movie runs out of steam as it plods toward its predictable conclusion, at least it's mercifully short. This picture might not be a classic, but it's shrewd enough not to wear out its welcome.
