A24’s political thriller “Civil War” is resonating not just in red states and blue but overseas, too.
Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist who traverses a violently divided United States, has grossed $45.7 million in North America and $20 million internationally. Global ticket sales stand at $67.3 million through Monday, and it’s projected to cross $70 million on Tuesday.
“Civil War” is the first A24 movie to top the domestic box office, and it’s impressively remained the No. 1 film for two consecutive weekends. Given the fiercely U.S.-centric subject matter, it wasn’t clear the film would resonate at the international box office. But “Civil War” has managed to appeal to overseas audiences with the biggest turnout in the United Kingdom, where it has grossed $4.8 million, followed by the Netherlands, where it has grossed $750,000. Over the weekend, the film opened in first place in several smaller moviegoing markets,...

Anna Gunn is simply stunning in the recently released Apple TV series, Sugar. Not only does the actress do an incredible job, but it seems refreshing to see her once again on the screen, for it has been a while since she was last seen there. It was the script of the Colin Farrell-starrer series that eventually made her say yes to the show.
Breaking Bad
While she enjoyed working along with Farrell and the rest of the talented cast, the set also turned into a small impromptu reunion with her Breaking Bad cast and crew. In a recent interview, while discussing the said reunion, the actress also made some remarks about the hate she received for her Breaking Bad character and how people’s perception of Skyler has changed.

Seems like actress Kirsten Dunst is overwhelmingly occupied with her mommy duties to the extent that she has to carve out time just to take a shower.
The 41-year-old actress has revealed that she is so busy juggling her career with caring for her two sons, Ennis, five, and two-year-old James, whom she shares with her 36-year-old actor husband Jesse Plemons, that she spends whatever little alone time she can manage watching trashy TV shows, reports ‘Female First UK’.
Kirsten, currently portraying a conflict photographer in ‘Civil War’ on the big screen, told ‘People’ magazine: “When everyone is asleep, and I can watch the shows I want like ‘The Bachelor’. But honestly, not even a shower is sacred at this point. Nothing is.”
Describing her last “perfect” day off when asked, Kirsten said: “When you have two kids, you never have a day off. Right now it’s being on a plane with no Wi-Fi.

Alex Garland returns in a film that’s reminiscent of his earlier works that kicked off his career. The plot of Civil War has been kept under wraps for the most part, with the synopsis of the upcoming film being, “An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor edge.” However, there’s enough mystery and intrigue about Garland’s latest that can make this political thriller a sleeper hit in 2024. The cast is mixed with unknowns and well-established veterans: Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Nick

The lineup for the 77th Cannes Film Festival has officially been unveiled. As of right now, 19 films will be competing for the prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or. The festival will be running from May 14 through the closing ceremony on May 25 in the small town on the French Riviera. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig, fresh off of her success writing and directing “Barbie,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The remaining members of the jury have yet to be announced.
Having an idea of a filmmaker’s history at the festival can sometimes help give us an insight as to who could be in the best position to take home the Palme. For example, two of this year’s entries come from filmmakers who have previously claimed the Palme. Another five are from directors who have won prizes in official...

Tense, disturbing, riveting, Alex Garland’s dystopian film Civil War examines an existential threat preying on the American sub-conscious: What would happen if the political and social divisions cleaving the United States ultimately collapse the nation into the abyss? What if the wars of rhetoric, of culture, of values, cause a series of irreparable breaks, whole states secede and we descend into an actual war?
These are menacing questions made palpable because many of us feel we’re already at the brink. As we swirl in a civil war of ideas, a civil war of ideologies, a civil war in public discourse and policy that has created two completely different frames of reality, more than 40 percent of Americans polled just two years ago by YouGov and The Economist said they believe the nation could turn so far on itself that a civil war, a military conflict, is possible within this decade.

Authenticity holds a lot of value in Hollywood. As much as audiences love to watch remakes, retellings, and sequels, nothing catches their attention more than something original and magnificent. The one studio that is best known for only creating content like this is A24. The perfect example of such a story would be their recently released movie, Civil War.

In the classic style of the studio, the movie features an A-list cast of actors like Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura, but has still managed to remain, somewhat, under the radar. With its recent release, the movie has gotten nothing short of splendid reviews from audiences and critics alike, hinting at a successful future at the box office.

Alex Garland’s bold new political thriller “Civil War” won the box office this weekend, grossing $25 million, the highest opening for an A24 movie ever. Captivating the public with its visceral violence, shocking images, and frightening cautionary tale politics that mirror today’s division, the movie is also earning much acclaim for a brief but chilling performance by Jesse Plemons (“Killers of The Flower Moon”) playing a cold-blooded soldier unnervingly executing civilians at will (read our review).

Kirsten Dunst’s Civil War featured her husband Jesse Plemons in one of the most disturbing scenes in the film. Fans were terrified yet impressed by Plemons’ chilling performance, but director Alex Garland shared that the scene was meant for another actor. When the original actor became unavailable a few days before the shoot, it was Dunst who suggested Plemons for the role. Garland felt incredibly lucky to have the Breaking Bad actor on board the film.

While there were concerns it could be a divisive topic, Alex Garland's explosive, nervy Civil War is so far proving to be a big hit in Stateside cinemas, and the writer/director's latest has opened way ahead of expectations. Per Variety, the film, which had been predicted to fall somewhere in the $15-$20 million range, is now on course to earn more than $25 million for its first weekend.
The film, which stars Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, is enjoying healthy business on regular screens and IMAX, and is already both Garland and distributor A24's most successful film to date. And it needed to be, since it has the biggest budget of a movie by the company, which also spent a considerable amount marketing.

A great many people appear to have come out of “Civil War,” Alex Garland’s a-house-divided-against-itself-can-kick-highly-equipped-military-ass dystopian combat thriller, feeling all shook up. They’re disturbed by it, unsettled by it. They experience the movie as if it were holding a violent mirror up to the simmering rage of America’s current political/spiritual/ ideological divide. Many critics have been seriously spooked by it, and so have columnists like the New York Times’ Michelle Goldberg. The filmmaker and Facebook pundit Paul Schrader said he was scared by it. And to judge from how many tickets the film is selling, in a $25 million opening weekend that bodes well for the future of adult dramas with topical resonance (on that score let’s all be grateful), I would guess that a solid portion of the audience was scared too.

This is still true of “Dune: Part Two,” the film that has set the tone of this year’s awards conversation, though with six Oscars already under the Warner Bros. franchise’s belt, its chances at more Academy Awards nominations are all too predictable.
An Oscars wild card is “Civil War,” the latest A24 film from writer-director Alex Garland. While his most recent film with the company, “Men,” underperformed critically and commercially, his first collaboration with A24, “Ex Machina,” netted Garland his sole Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Plot: In the United States, amid a brutal civil war, a team of journalists drive from New York to Washington D.C, where they’ve been promised an interview with the president.
Review: A24 is the only movie studio I know of that’s picked up a cult following of its own. Their brand has become one of the most trusted among discerning film fans, delivering a slew of interesting, provocative movies that fit all genres. In some ways, they are a throwback to an older kind of filmmaking in that they’ve never focused on chasing franchises and have always been filmmaker-focused. They’ve always taken risks, and it’s paid off more than it hasn’t. However, their latest film, Civil War, is arguably their riskiest movie, sporting their biggest budget (north of $50 million) and subject matter that could be seen as a bit of a political powder keg.

When she’s not busting a move in the latest teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, Emma Stone is adding an untitled Universal film to her Hollywood dance card. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to join Brigsby Bear director Dave McCary for a forthcoming feature. McCary is in negotiations with Universal Pictures about helming the mysterious project. Stone and McCary tied the knot in 2020, making this union a couple’s venture.
Patrick Kang and Michael Levin, the supervising producers of NBC and Utv’s Young Rock, wrote the original spec screenplay for the untitled project. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine will produce via 21 Laps alongside Micheal H. Weber. Emma Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting could join the production effort through Fruit Tree.

British writer-director Alex Garland has form when it comes to depicting the apocalypse, having previously written the 2002 zombie classic 28 Days Later. With his latest film, he turns his attention to the US, revealing a country torn apart by a cleverly unspecified Civil War, observing the ensuing horror through the pointedly objective eyes of a group of embedded war photographers. By turns thrilling, terrifying and deeply moving, it’s a profoundly provocative piece of work that demands to be seen.
After a brief prologue with the US President (Nick Offerman) psyching himself up for a press briefing, we learn that present-day America is deep in the throes of a catastrophic Civil War, after the states of California and Texas both seceded from the Union and joined forces, making...

Alex Garland’s dystopian action movie Civil War has started off its North American box office run with an impressive $2.9 million, a record for indie studio and distributor A24.
The $50 million movie about a divided America is a big swing for A24 as it tries to produce bigger movies, and is its most expensive production to date.
Civil War is tracking to open north of $20 million, although one leading tracking service has a slightly lower range of $19 million to $20 million. As with the preview number, that would be record for A24, beating the $13.6 million opening of A24’s horror pic Hereditary in 2018.
A24 and writer-director Garland held the movie’s world premiere last month at the South by Southwest Film and TV Festival, an ideal venue since many of the attendees are younger adults, the film’s target demo.

The box office is going to war.
A24 and director Alex Garland’s latest film, the controversial “Civil War,” is opening in theaters this weekend. So far, it’s made $2.9 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
“Civil War” has its sights set on the highest opening weekend ever for an A24 movie. The film, which takes place in a fractured America torn apart by civil war, is projected to make around $20 million in its opening weekend. Some estimates are as high as $24 million and as low as $15 million, but even that would break the A24 record. An opening in the upper range could also unseat Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,” which has been No. 1 for the past two weeks at the box office.
Director Ari Aster’s horror film “Hereditary” currently holds the highest opening weekend for A24, after it made $13.6 million in 2018. “Hereditary” made $1.3 million in Thursday previews,...

Writer/director Alex Garland explored the near future in two of his previous three features. In Ex MacHina he pondered the possibilities of emerging technology and the rise of sentient artificial beings. Then in Annihilation, he tackled the results of alien contact and the impact on the ecology and the military response to it. With this new film, Garland goes “back to the future”, though it’s not centuries ahead, but rather a time that could be “just around the corner”, spawned from events happening right now. And it’s not gizmos or ETs that propel the cautionary fable. No, it’s the dangers of hatred and intolerance that divide the country and lead to a Civil War. It’s not the first time, but it could be the last…

Disney entertained the CinemaCon crowd in Las Vegas on Thursday with 75 minutes of footage including big crowd-pleasers Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Alien: Romulus, and an appearance by Dwayne Johnson to promote Moana 2.

It's official! Yorgos Lanthimos is returning to Cannes! It was announced this morning that his new feature film titled Kinds of Kindness is world premiering in the Cannes 2024 competition this May. We already posted the first teaser trailer a few weeks ago, and now Searchlight has revealed a brand new poster and a short 30-sec teaser celebrating the exciting Cannes news today. As his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness is described as an anthology film with three segments - following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability. The exquisite ensemble cast in this: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Krystal Alayne Chambers. I am so pumped for this!

It’ll soon be time to pack your tuxes and/or high heels and wonder “why the heck does it get so hot at 6:30 pm, just when I’m lining up for the 7:15 pm screening?” The eyes of the entertainment world will once again turn toward the French Riviera for the 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival.
The main slate announcement was made early Thursday morning, confirming many suspicions, and offering much excitement for hardcore cinephiles. For those with more mainstream tastes—and an eye toward what will still be in play come next year’s Oscars—here are some highlights.
Certainly, the biggest event screening will be the public’s first look at Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” a self-financed behemoth that he’s been dreaming about for decades. The director/vintner is a two-time winner of Cannes’s Palme D’Or—for “The Conversation” in 1974 and “Apocalypse Now...

Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. "I've never been scared like that before... and I've never felt more alive." If two other trailers and a making of featurette weren't enough, A24 has desperately released a third trailer two days before this movie opens. A bit much, no? Do we need to see more? A24 has launched one more trailer for Alex Garland's Civil War, his action thriller war movie arriving in theaters soon. This is the fourth film Garland has directed, following Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. A tense journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. The excellent ensemble cast for features Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, plus Jesse Plemons. This trailer is packed with critic quotes following its SXSW debut last month.

Civil War is shaping up to be one of A24’s most successful films, which is odd considering how far the film starts from the roots of its studio. The film follows a group of journalists making their way from the now-divided United States of America, which had split into multiple factions.

Starring in the film along with Kristen Dunst and Wagner Moura, is Jesse Plemons, who has been credited with one of the most chilling scenes in the film, one that might be more relevant to today’s political climate than any other part of the film.

For someone who’s about to release a cautionary tale about the current state of America, Civil War star Kirsten Dunst is remarkably unfazed.
Alex Garland’s critically acclaimed action-thriller explores a near future in which our own present-day sound bites involving civil war and secession actually came to pass, and now rebel forces are inching toward commandeering the White House from its dictatorial president (Nick Offerman). Dunst plays Lee Smith, a seasoned and tenacious war photographer who reluctantly becomes a mentor to Cailee Spaeny’s aspiring photographer, Jessie Cullen. The duo are joined by Reuters and The New York Times reporters, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), as the quartet journey from New York City to Washington, D.C., in order to document the armed factions’ descent on the Oval Office.

Although the story, on its own, is extremely captivating, its cast and director act as the cherry on top. Featuring Kristen Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman in central roles, and Alex Garland having directed the whole project, it is safe to say that all eyes are on this movie.
SUGGESTEDKirsten Dunst’s Civil War Role is Based on a Real-Life Journalist Who Was Also the Inspiration Behind Amy Adams’ Lois Lane

Kirsten Dunst attended the Los Angeles premiere of her latest dystopian action film, Civil War, before its April 12 release in US theaters. She exuded understated elegance in a black Rodarte dress, far different from the coquette-style mint green dress she wore to the film’s London screening last week.
Her previous dress also had a subtle elegance, but I wasn’t particularly fond of the silhouette or the styling.
I’m glad she gave the sleek, contemporary aesthetic another shot with this Rodarte creation. It reminds me of her white Gucci dress at the Oscars, and I hope she sticks with this look as it suits her so well compared to her typical printed, dated red carpet outfit choices.
