Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were friends for decades, drawn together by an electric current of energy . Parton and Rogers had such good rapport that rumors of an affair between them circulated for years. Both denied having ever acted on their feelings, but they said they felt the chemistry between them from the moment they met.
Dolly Parton met Kenny Rogers on the set of her TV show
In 1976, Parton waded deeper into the pool of her talents by hosting a variety show, Dolly. One of her earliest guests was Rogers. She said that his appearance on her show marked the beginning of their crackling chemistry.
“Kenny Rogers was also a guest on that early show,” she wrote in her book Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “That began the chemistry that would make such a hit with the public in our future projects together. There was something about the combination that just worked.

Last night, the Broadway musical Shucked made history of a sort when cast member Alex Newell delivered a red-hot performance of the musical’s barnburner “Independently Owned” on The Voice, marking the first time a Broadway show has gained entry onto the NBC talent competition.
The performance before a national audience was just the latest tradition-bucking move for Shucked, the seemingly out-of-nowhere musical that capped a months-long campaign for recognition – any recognition – with its garnering of no fewer than nine Tony Award nominations on May 2, nominations that included Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Direction and, for both Newell and actor Kevin Cahoon, Best Featured Actor/Musical.
The nominations marked a big turning point for the production, both in terms of box office and public perception. New Yorkers and tourists began noticing the ubiquitous, pun-filled, bright yellow and green Shucked posters throughout the subway system and elsewhere months ago,...

“It’s hilarious, sweet, universal,” declares Kevin Cahoon of the new Broadway musical “Schucked.” Original works spend years in development before they make it to the rialto, and the actor has been working on this musical comedy for the past eight years. In fact, he’s the only member of the Broadway company who has been with the production since day one. As he thinks back on the many readings, out-of-town tryouts, and script overhauls which have shaped this “corny” tuner, Cahoon believes that “It has finally found its right moment” to make its hysterical and heartwarming entrance in New York. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Cahoon portrays Peanut, a quirky man who seems to be at the center of every event in the small farm town of Cobbs County. The character started as the county clerk in early iterations of the script, but over the years Peanut evolved...

In its nearly 100-year history, few events have stopped the Grand Ole Opry broadcasts. And while each calendar year is different, the Opry’s weekend shows, now on Friday and Saturday nights, have more than a few times, including this year, fallen on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day. Back on Christmas Eve 1960, as Nashville was recovering from three days of snowfall and bitter cold, the Opry presented a jubilant show with Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, Archie Campbell, and Minnie Pearl. Mixed among hits of the day were the Opry...

If there’s anything you could bet on in country music, it’s that Ashley McBryde is a future Grand Ole Opry member… and probably, much further down the line, a Country Hall of Famer, too. But she hasn’t been at it for that long, in the historical scheme of things. Ask her if she remembers her first Opry appearance, and it pops out immediately: “Absolutely! June 16th, 2017. We did my makeup probably four times that day because I kept crying. I cried when I got to room four, because I knew about room four before I walked into it.”

Robert Altman’s 1975 “Nashville” is considered one of the masterpieces of that golden decade of cinema and arguably the maverick filmmaker’s masterwork. The sprawling comedy-drama received stellar reviews, was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, winning Best Original Song for Keith Carradine’s “I’m Easy” and won several critics’ honors.
But one group that didn’t like the movie was Nashville’s country-music crowd. Henry Gibson, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his glowing performance as egotistical country music star Haven Hamilton, told me in a 2000 L.A. Times interview on the movie, that the legendary Minnie Pearl “was outraged. I remember on opening night, someone asked her how she would rate the picture and she said, ‘I give it two closed nostrils.’”

Dierks Bentley is set to star in and executive produce Hot Country Knights, a mockumentary series about the parody group he has fronted since 2015 with members of his road band. Critical Content is producing the 10-episode shortform series about the band that skewers 1990s country music.
Here’s what to expect: After 30 wasted years and countless bad decisions, Bentley attempts to rescue the band and give them one more shot at glory with a new album The K Is Silent and their first nationwide tour. Although some thought this moment would never happen, fans will be able to follow the Knights’ career on Quibi.
Veteran country star Bentley plays bandleader Douglas “Doug” Douglason alongside Hot Country Knights members Marty Ray “Rayro” Roburn on guitar, keytar/fiddle player Terotej “Terry” Dvoraczekynski, steel guitarist Barry Van Ricky and percussionist Monte Montgomery. With tongue firmly in cheek, the Knights revive a comedic element...

The birth of banjo great Earl Scruggs — born 96 years ago on January 6th, 1924, in the Cleveland County community of Flint Hill, North Carolina — predated the debut of the Grand Ole Opry by less than two years, but since then the musician has become synonymous with the Opry, as well as bluegrass and country music.

Reed Farrell, who was president of AFTRA from 1989-93, has died. He was 89. “Reed was a committed unionist with a passion for union service and the betterment of his fellow members,” said SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris. “Our gratitude goes out to him for his many years of dedication to our union.”
Farrell, who died July 6, “was inspired to serve his union by the joint AFTRA and SAG commercials strike of 1979;” the guild said today. “He understood the inherent problems with the crossover in jurisdictions between the unions, allowing producers to shop contracts. At AFTRA’s 1989 convention, he encouraged the further exploration of merger.” The two unions merged in 2012.

Roy Clark, the popular country music singer-guitarist who co-hosted the long-running sketch/variety series Hee Haw with Buck Owens, died today of pneumonia complications at his home in Tulsa, Ok. He was 85.
CBS launched Hee Haw in summer 1969 as country music’s answer to Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Weaving performances by the genre’s top stars with surprise cameos and down-home comedy skits loaded with catchphrases, it lasted three seasons on the network — finishing in the primetime ratings top 20 in each of its first two — before moving to first-run syndication in 1971 — where it aired for 22 more years.
Among the many series regulars over the years were Louis “Grandpa” Jones, Minnie Pearl — she of the $1.98 pricetag hanging from her flowered hat — Barbi Benton, Roy Acuff, Harry Cole and that animated donkey who punctuated the punchlines with the shows titular laugh. Clark’s longtime co-host Owens died in 2006.

In the heightened world that ABC’s Nashville has created over the past four seasons, I’m willing to buy quite a lot.
Country-crossing stadium tours thrown together at a moment’s notice? Sure. An A-list singer in huge sunglasses stalking her estranged husband from her mobility scooter at a public festival? Why not? Heck, I’ll even go along with the notion that Music City has a rabid pack of paparazzi ready to pop flashbulbs at the slightest whiff of controversy.
But I swear, by the price tag fluttering from Minnie Pearl’s sunhat, I cannot accept that Maddie — Maddie!

Christopher Meloni is only the hottest single noun I know. Literally the most attractive noun. If you gathered all the nouns you know into one room and ranked them by hotness, Chris would have a little Minnie Pearl tag on his hat reading "#1." And it's a testament to his attractiveness that we still find him so hot after hearing him voice a character in the old family sitcom "Dinosaurs." Dinos with family problems! Genius. In other news: I would pay money to hear Chris say with a full Baby Sinclair voice, "I'm Meloni, gotta love me!" ...

Nashville, Tenn. -- Darius Rucker's surprise invitation to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry is a moment he says he will always cherish – and now fans will be able to share the experience with him over and over again.
The singer, who rose to fame as the frontman for South Carolina rockers Hootie & The Blowfish, began pursuing his lifelong passion for country music a few years ago. Now he is the video host for one of two new tours that have been added to the Opry's backstage tour line-up.
The tours are the "VIP Behind The Opry Curtain Tour" and the "Opry House Post-Show Tour," which Rucker hosts.
"They're going to get to relive that night, and that moment" he was asked to join the Opry, said Rucker, who was inducted shortly after the invitation last October. "But they're also going to see some other great things behind the scenes.

Nashville, Tenn. -- Actor George Lindsey was remembered Friday as the grinning Goober who made television viewers laugh for three decades on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Hee Haw."
A public memorial service drew an estimated 400 people who paid last respects to Lindsey, 83, who died Sunday.
He was the beanie-wearing Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, "Mayberry Rfd," from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character, a mechanic, on "Hee Haw" from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993. Reruns of those shows are still seen on TV.
Griffith did not attend, but sent a statement that was read by country music broadcaster Keith Bilbrey at the service at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
"George was a better joke teller than me, and I will say here that I `borrowed' jokes from George that he may have `borrowed' from Minnie Pearl," Griffith confessed. "George told me his...

"Kid-thing" (playing in the Next program) is the newest film from the Austin-based Zellner Bros., who last came to Sundance in 2008 with "Goliath." They raised funds on Kickstarter; among their incentives was the promise of "a Slow-dance with a Zellner of your choice to Foreigner’S “I Want To Know What Love Is.” They also claim to be developing a six-hour biopic about Minnie Pearl. What's it about? Annie is a 10-year-old delinquent whose life becomes increasingly complicated following a strange discovery in the woods near her home. Says director David Zellner: "With 'Kid-thing' we wanted to make a film about a particular childhood that was both funny and earnest, combining a naturalistic coming-of-age story with the qualities of a fable. From the in-the-now perspective of a child as opposed to an adult's rose-tinted idyllic look back. Focusing on the natural moments, the beauty, the horror, the sense of.

No Keira, no Orlando, no problem for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The fourth installment of the series is surrounding Johnny Depp with Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, and old standby Geoffrey Rush, but now the likely replacements for Knightley and Bloom have been named.
Why are these characters at all necessary? They aren't. And I don't understand why Disney is so bound and determined to pack this movie so full of characters when one of the best creations in the movies in the past decade is the crown jewel of the franchise.
Be that as it may, French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and English up-and-comer Sam Claflin are boarding the Black Pearl, which is estimably preferable to boarding the Minnie Pearl.
