Young director Cj Wang presents with “Reclaim” her feature length directorial debut. Before turning to film, she worked in theatre. Since then she made several shorts. “Reclaim” is an ambitious work, showing undoubtedly great skills, but also some clumsiness in certain aspects.
Reclaim is screening on New York Asian Film Festival
At the centre of the story is Miss Yeh (Nina Paw). She is an art teacher and has a workshop in which she creates miniature furniture for toy houses. She had always dreamt of traveling the world, but instead she married and started a family. Her husband (Johnny Kou) is already retired, sits at home in his armchair, browses through his smartphone and bosses his wife around as soon as she gets home. Without her he can’t sort out the trash, fry an egg or even put back the milk can into the fridge – well, he doesn’t...

Chicago – One of the gems of the Chicago film scene began last year, and is successfully finishing its second season. The Asian Pop-Up Film Festival is the invention of its founder, Sophia Wong Boccio, a Hong Kong native who has lived all over the world, but never forgot her background in film, rooted from her parents. With that passion, she began the festival to share her vast knowledge of films from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, and expand access to them in Chicago.
The final film of the second season will be a North American premiere, “The Mobfathers” – on Thursday, May 19th, 2016 – from Hong Kong director Herman Yau, followed by a Closing Night Gala the following evening on May 20th. Director Yau will be in attendance at both events, and Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com will moderate a Q&A with the director at the Gala. For more...

Distribution Workshop just dropped a cache of marketing materials for Insanity, the Derek Yee-produced psychological thriller written and directed by David Lee Kuan Yew. We first reported on the project when it was announced back in October 2013. Lee apparently spent five years developing the script to meet his producer's expectations, which pits Huang Xiaoming's hotshot psychiatrist against Lau Ching Wan's intelligent psychopath. Nina Paw, Alex Fong, Michelle Ye and Michelle Wai also star and the film is slated for an April 2015 domestic release, which places it as a likely target to premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in March. Below you can find the film's poster, together with a selection of stills portraying the principals - Paw in particular - embodying the...

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. Siu-ho (Siu-ho Chin) is a former actor and he has been kicked out of his home, by his wife. He chooses suicide as an escape from his pain, but a neighbour intervenes. Tung (Richard Ng...

Juno Mak's directorial debut Rigor Mortis is a lot of things. Some of it sticks and some of it doesn't. First and foremost though, Rigor Mortis is a love letter to 80s vampire classic Mr. Vampire. Starring original cast members Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan, Richard Ng, Billy Lau and Chung Fa, as well as veteran actors Paw Hee Ching and Kara Hui, Juno Mak is clearly not afraid to take chances. Japanese horror master Shimizu Takashi acts as producer, which probably explains why Rigor Mortis is an uneven blend of vampire folklore and Japanese-style ghost story. On a visual level it can't be faulted, with Juno Mak introducing himself to the filmmaking world in ballsy fashion. There is, after all, a very good reason why it was nominated for three 2013 Golden Horse awards, including Best New Director and Best Makeup & Costume Design. Action star Siu Ho (Chin Siu Ho...

It’s always good to keep an eye on the progressing careers of 1980s Hong Kong New Wave directors, and so “Floating City”, the 13th outing from helmer Yim Ho is likely to be of immediate interest for fans. Having been responsible for a number of highly regarded films, in particular “Homecoming” and “Red Dust”, Yim Ho returns to the kind of personal historical and social drama he became known for with a true life tale of an ethnic minority, mixed race fisherman who rises to the top of the British East India Company in Hong Kong during the end of the colonial period. Taking on the challenging, decade spanning lead role is popular actor Aaron Kwok (“Murderer”), with support from actresses Charlie Young (who worked with Kwok on the award winning “After This Our Exile”), Annie Liu (“Exodus”), Josie Ho (“Dream Home”), and veteran Paw Hee Ching (“The Way...

Hong Kong's first slasher film 'Dream Home' (Aka 'Wai dor lei ah yut ho'), is certainly high on the radar lately. Pang Ho-Cheung's new blood-thirsty feature is looking more and more awesome day by day. A massive batch of new stills from the movie have been released and are particulary gruesome. Take note that these baby's are not safe for work (Nsfw) and do include the sight of a hot topless Asian chick with a large bit of wood being inserted in her (oo-er!). 'Dream Home' stars Josie Ho, Michelle Ye, Lawrence Chou, Eason Chan, Kwok Cheung Tsang, Norman Chu, Hee Ching Paw and Lap-Man Sin. Check out the stills below....

With its familiar sounding title and ex-con trying to go straight premise, “To Live and Die in Mongkok” is not immediately a particularly appealing prospect. However, the impeccably acclaimed cast should certainly arouse the interest, given that it includes Nick Cheung and Paw Hee Ching, winners of Best Actor and Best Actress at the 2009 Hong Kong Film Awards, not to mention Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress winners Liu Kai Chi and Chan Lai Wan. Although the presence of Wong Jing in the director’s chair, which he shares with frequent partner in crime Billy Chung, may give some cause for scepticism, it should be remembered that the Hong Kong shlockmeister has proved himself more than capable of turning serious when it suits, as seen in other quality triad dramas such as “Colour of the Truth”, and the recent “I Corrupt all Cops” and “Hong Kong Bronx”. The film...
