From Amy Schumer to Danny DeVito, there was no shortage of great, breakthrough performances on the Broadway stage. If these performances are any indication of what’s to come, then audiences are seeing the beginnings of successful theater careers -- and we can’t wait to see more!
Alex Newell, Once on This Island
Alex Newell and Hailey Kilgore. Joan Marcus
As Mother of the Earth in the revival of Once on This Island, Newell filled the Circle in the Square Theatre with his bombastic and vibrant performance of “Mama Will Provide.” It’s a show-stopping moment that literally brought audiences to their feet in rapturous applause. And his co-star, Hailey Kilgore, should not be overlooked. As Ti Moune, she carried the story about a peasant girl in love with a wealthy boy from one side of the island to the other and enjoyed her own standout moment, leading a rapturous dance during a ball scene. Track my film passions of the past year and the result is this list. These are the films that wowed and moved me, that turned me into a rabid champion, that gave me hope that brilliant cinematic storytelling — and a rebel spirit — is alive and well. It turned out to be a strong year for women directors (five), romances (three), World War II dramas (two), Angelina Jolie movies (two), animation (one), and documentaries (one).

In addition to fall TV and a new slate of prestigious films, theater is gearing up for a new season, both on and Off-Broadway.
This year, there is no shortage of Hollywood star power -- ahem, the Broadway debuts of Amy Schumer and Uma Thurman, the return of Anna Camp and Clive Owen, and the Boss -- as well as anticipated new productions, must-see revivals and the redemption of director Julie Taymor. And the action is not limited to New York as two major musical adaptions get their feet wet with out of town tryouts.

“Get Shorty” might be about Hollywood, but is it a satire? Star Chris O’Dowd thinks so.
“Poking fun at truth is satire,” he said. “Us trying to extricate those things that we find ridiculous about Hollywood and putting them on film satirizes it. But we don’t have to fake it.”
The Epix original drama, the first three episodes of which can be watched online now, is “inspired by” the Elmore Leonard novel and subsequent Barry Sonnenfeld film. But, a la “Fargo,” the show has put its own spin on the material, creating the character of Miles (O’Dowd), a gangster who decides to pursue a new path in life after getting a taste of the Hollywood scene.

Now that “The Big Sick” has opened better than any limited release so far this year, its success seems almost predestined: By the time it premiered at Sundance, Amazon Studios was already prepared to make a fat bid based on the script and elements. They just needed to see it, finally, in front of an audience. (Amazon won the bidding war against Netflix, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, and Focus Features, buying North American rights for $12 million.)

Casting is a hugely important part of the filmmaking process. Unfortunately, sometimes Hollywood gets it very wrong. When the wrong person gets the part, it can spoil the whole movie. Here are eight instances where bad casting damaged a big movie.
Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy: This bit of bad casting not only ruined a film, it wrecked three films. While the Star Wars prequels had numerous problems, the worst was the portrayal of iconic villain Darth Vader—Aka Anakin Skywalker—as a sulky, petulant teenager. Christensen’s bland performance made the problem 10-times worse. How do you follow the voice of James Earl Jones with the whiny voice of Christensen? He also had no chemistry at all with his co-star and love-interest Natalie Portman, who played Queen Amidala.
Jack Black as Carl Denham in King Kong (2005): Jack Black didn’t know what movie he was in here.

The first Get Hard trailer has arrived; the comedy comes from Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3 scribe writer Etan Cohen making his directorial debut. It feels like a dates idea to me, or something I saw Steve Martin and Queen Latifah sort-of do years ago, but Will Ferrell has his fans and Kevin Hart is the go-to teacher/helper of white people these days (see: The Wedding Ringer).
Here’s the official synopsis:
When millionaire hedge fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is nailed for fraud and bound for a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him 30 days to get his affairs in order. Desperate, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) to prep him for a life behind bars. But despite James’ one-percenter assumptions, Darnell is a hard-working small business owner who has never received a parking ticket, let alone been to prison. Together, the two men do...

Turns out Eli Roth, the director of "Hostel," was not a fan of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." At least he wasn't back in 1999, when he wrote this scathing takedown -- which, since it was published before the movie even opened, stands as one of the first reviews of the prequel ever written.
Writing for LeisureSuit.net, a website that no longer exists (though an archived version of the review can be found here), Roth declared, "So here's the kicker: It Sucks." Yes, we all kind of know that now (though some people took longer than others to figure that out) but it's still remarkable to read such early vitriol.
The review was brought to my attention by Jordan Hoffman, who currently writes for Film.com and the New York Daily News. Back in 1999, Hoffman was an editor at LeisureSuit.net (along with screenwriter Kerry Douglas Dye...

Standing by his friend Brett Ratner is an admirable act but Murphy may regret turning down the chance to cement his place in Hollywood
The row over Brett Ratner may have been an unseemly and unsavoury moment in the normally dull-as-ditchwater background to the Oscars night broadcast, but at least one good thing has come out of it: an attack of loyalty, it seems, has broken out in the entertainment business.
Whether or not the Academy were right to give Ratner the bullet over a string of dubious remarks while promoting his new film Tower Heist, the fact that erstwhile host Eddie Murphy voluntarily followed him into the long grass seems, on the face of it, an admirable act of solidarity.
For Murphy, it's clear the loss will be considerably greater than for Ratner. The last few years have seen Murphy clambering back into Hollywood's bosom after spending long years...

Summertime, the perfect time to hit the road. Well, since gas prices are still a bit steep maybe we can travel the highways and byways vicariously through a pair of comic actors. Now if you think of two comic actors hitting the road younger film fans may think of David Spade and Chris Farley or Steve Martin and John Candy in the now holiday classic Planes,Trains, And Automobiles. And going even farther back there’s Bob Hope and Bing Crosby’s string of road pictures. Well here we do have two funny guys, but there’s no music numbers and no Dorothy Lamour. And they’re British comics going not to exotic faraway lands, but driving to Northern England. Still you’ll find The Trip a pretty engaging getaway.
Actor Steve Coogan has taken on an assignment from the Observer to travel the small villages of northern England and review their hotels and eateries.

Hello, Zoners! You don’t have to tell me why I Do like Mondays! Sure, it’s a day almost everyone dreads, but for us it means a new Report–and that’s always good. And we must savor every show now, because very soon the holiday break will come, leaving us bereft.
What a great lineup this week, including two Pulitzer Prize winners, a Tony Award winner, and one of my favorite novel writing, bluegrass-playing comedians ever.
Monday December 6: Garry Trudeau
Happy 40th birthday, Doonsebury! Garry Trudeau debuted his cutting-edge, politically satiric strip (the continuation of his earlier, deliciously titled Bull Tales) in 1970, when the Vietnam War still raged and the cultural strife of the 60s remained explosive. For his unique work, Trudeau received the very first Pulitzer Prize ever awarded to a cartoonist. Doonesbury has also been adapted for TV and stage.

With movies filled with fictional bands and actors churning out calypso records, James asks: has Hollywood killed rock ‘n’ roll?
Wham! Bam! Thank you, ma'am!
Or, no thank you, ma'am. I just don't know. I'm confused, it's noisy in here and what is real, what is fictional - what is imitation and what's authentic - are all merging and muddied.
I love the band Sex Bob-omb, except there is no such band as Sex Bob-omb beyond the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World movie, It's really just Beck slinging Edgar Wright some soundtrack bits. That's cool, but I want to see Sex Bob-omb, the band that features Scott Pilgrim on bass, in the flesh, but this is an impossible dream because they don't really exist.
Likewise, The Clash at Demonhead, Crash and the Boys and the Katayanagi Twins from the Pilgrimiverse. While we're at it, I'm also eager to see Wyld...
