I'm always amazed at how many good shows completely fly by me. Case in point: Blood of Zeus, an animated show about gods and demons and other monsters of Greek mythology, created by Charley Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides. Season 1 released eight episodes in late 2020, and now Season 2 is coming on May 9. I've only watched the first three episodes so far, but it's exactly what it sounds like on the tin, only better, in that's a hard-edged action-adventure that puts a human touch on Greek mythology. The official synopsis for Season 2: "Following Zeus' demise, a power vacuum emerges amongst the gods, leaving Heron, Zeus' demigod son, struggling to find his place. He is racked with loss and hears a mysterious refrain...

Inspired by Ancient Greek mythology, the first season of Netflix’s Blood of Zeus, initially known as Gods & Heroes, premiered on October 27, 2020. The series had a total of eight episodes, and it was well-received by fans and critics. Created by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, the series was produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios with the animation outsourced to South Korean studios Mua Film and Hanho Heung-Up. The series was quickly renewed for a second season in December 2020, but it took a total of four years for the series to return, as Netflix finally confirmed that the second season will premiere on May 9, 2024.
The creators of the series have confirmed that they have a total of five seasons planned, and we just hope that we won’t have to wait that long for the upcoming seasons to appear. Alongside the premiere date, a trailer has also been released, which you can watch below.

Netflix's track record with producing live-action anime is mixed, at best. The streamer's "One Piece" series has already been renewed, but the live-action "Cowboy Bebop" was a swiftly-canceled mess.
Their most infamous project, however, is probably "Death Note." This story, first told by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in a mega-popular manga, focuses on the Japanese teenager Light Yagami. One day, a notebook falls from the sky into Light's lap. Dropped by a Shinigami (a Japanese death god) named Ryuk, the "death note" will kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light decides to purge the world of evil by using the Death Note to kill high-profile criminals, becoming a serial killer himself in the process. Dubbed "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of "Killer"), he gains allies (deludedly loyal pop idol Misa Amane) and adversaries (eccentric master detective L).
This 2017 film, directed by Adam Wingard, transposed this story to Seattle.

Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, the dynamic duo of writer/producers behind Immortals and hit Netflix animated series Blood of Zeus, have tapped Oscar-nominated screenwriter Dan Gordon (The Hurricane) and New York Times bestselling writer and artist John Stanisci (Batman Beyond) to develop a new property based on the bloody gladiator battles of 5th century Rome with Gladiatrix, in simultaneous development as an original graphic novel and television series!
Charley Parlapanides says “Dan and John have been masterful storytellers for decades in a wide variety of mediums, be it film, tv, the theater or the panels of a comic book. We are thrilled to be working with them and absolutely love the story they’ve crafted. And truthfully, we feel the world needs a story like this, a story about heroism and bravery in the face of almost insurmountable odds.”

Netflix’s 2017 movie Death Note has a bad reputation. Fans of the manga and anime resented the story being Americanized, character motivations and arcs being altered, and the subtle changes to the cosmology of the universe. Despite this, the film did very well, with producer Ted Sarandos revealing that it had been a “sizeable” success for the streaming platform.
Now, with a sequel currently in development, screenwriters Charley and Vlas Parlapanides have discussed their intentions and how they reacted to the hate the movie received from fans. Apparently, one reason the criticism stung so fiercely was that they too loved the original material. As Charley says:
“[T]he one thing I would say is that we were in on Death Note back in 2006, reading bootleg copies of the PDFs online that had the American translation and our original drafts were more true to what the story is.”

Netflix has taken up more of an interest in animated series for mature audiences and Blood of Zeus is one of the most enjoyable results. The epic show comes from Charley and Vlas Parlapanides and it explores a “lost chapter” of Greek mythology where the bastard child of Zeus, Heron, learns about his roots and tries to embrace his birthright as a hero.
Blood of Zeus is a staggering achievement in terms of its chaotic animation and fight choreography as well as its take on the subject matter. The show’s first season tells a strong story that sees Heron and several other important figures vie for power at Mount Olympus. A second season hasn’t officially been confirmed, but there are several threads from the first batch of episodes that indicate where Blood of Zeus plans to go.

This Blood of Zeus review contains no spoilers and is based on all eight episodes.
Many properties across all media look to Greek mythology for story inspiration. It’s territory that’s been explored from nearly every angle at this point. What makes Blood of Zeus feel exciting rather than regressive is that it presupposes that its story is a lost chapter of Greek mythology. It tells the saga of Heron, a warrior who learns that he’s a rejected offspring of Zeus and must become ready to confront his past in an effort to change everyone else’s future. Heron’s original story allows the series to feature many notable Gods and figures, but it’s not restrained to any set narrative or endpoint. Blood of Zeus has a lot of fun with Heron’s ability to fight against the titans of Greek mythology and the show can re-contextualize...

Netflix has got another original anime series project brewing. It’s called Gods and Heroes and it’s inspired by the stories of Greek mythology. I love Greek mythology, so a series like this is very appealing to me.
The series “tells the story of a young man who, cast aside by his people, learns that he is the illegitimate son of Zeus. He alone can save both Heaven and Earth but to do so he must survive the vengeful wrath of a goddess who wants him dead and the monstrous forces of evil she aligns against him.”
Gods and Heroes is being developed by the animation studio behind the Castlevania anime series, and it was created by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, who are the writers behind Netflix’s live-action Death Note film. Here’s what they had to say in a statement:

There’s a notable difference between the types of projects that Amazon and Netflix have been putting out, theatrically speaking. On the one hand, Amazon has been gunning for awards and embracing a theatrical release with things like the Oscar winner Manchester by the Sea. There’s also their burgeoning relationship with an auteur like Woody Allen. It’s a whole concerted effort under their Amazon Studios wing. On the other hand, Netflix has gone for casting a wider net, while only occasionally putting their higher profile films out in theaters, like Beasts of No Nation or this year’s Okja. They only once in a while look at things with an awards type view. So far, they’ve either come up short with would be players like War Machine, or seen things like Beasts of No Nation snubbed. This week, Death Note hits as the latest major Netflix release.

Adapting “Death Note” into a feature-length American movie was always a colossally bad idea — Tsugumi Ohba’s manga ran 108 chapters, and there’s a good reason why the only decent riff on the original was an anime series that ran 19 hours — so neglecting to include Japanese-American actors among the top-billed cast just made things that much worse. It was a bad decision on top of a festering pile of bad decisions, but it was also the kind of mistake that reveals the wrongheadedness of an entire project.

"Death Note" would have been a very strange Shane Black movie. That alone seems like a reason to have been excited about the possibility of seeing it, but in the grand scheme of things, it seems like a better fit for Shane Black to move on to a new "Predator" movie. Besides, the notion of seeing Gus Van Sant direct a new take on this highly-acclaimed and very strange title is fairly provocative in a different way, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to see what he does with it. The original manga series was by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, and it tells the story of a high school student who finds a notebook that grants whoever owns it the ability to kill anyone simply by writing their name in the notebook. By using it, he draws the attention of the Shinigami, a disturbing race of inter-dimensional death gods.

Three intriguing sounding series have been put into development.
First up, Sky Deutschland, Sky Italia and BSkyB are developing a ten-episode live-action series adaptation of hit Italian comic book "Diabolik".
The comic follows a master thief who steals from other criminals and can take on any identity he wishes. The property was previously adapted into Mario Bava's 1968 film "Danger: Diabolik".
Next, A&E Network is reportedly developing the high-concept drama series "The 36" from "Immortals" scribes Charley & Vlas Parlapanides. Michael London will produce.
The story is set in New York City, in a world of Biblical fallen angels (the Nephilim). These dark angels are only kept in check by The Righteous 36. The latter is a mystical Jewish concept which says that at all times there are 36 people in the world possessing special powers.
Finally remake rights to "Prisoners of War", the Israeli drama that was remade in the U.S.

Are you a fan of stories about angels fighting humans and/or amongst themselves? If so, you'll possibly have another new TV show to watch along with "Dominion" on Syfy as word has come that A&E is developing "The 36." Read on for the details.
Per Deadline, A&E Network is developing the high-concept drama "The 36" with Immortals writers Charley and Vlas Parlapanides along with producer Michael London (The Illusionist, Milk).
The project’s title stems from the mystical Jewish concept of The Righteous 36, which stipulates that at all times there are 36 people in the world possessing special powers who don’t necessarily know each other, but if even one of them were to go missing, the world would come to an end.
If this premise sounds familiar, it was recently used on the Fox drama "Touch," where such 36 people were hunted by a shady organization.

January 13, 2011. That was the date that Shane Black (writer of Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2, Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero) was announced to direct a live action adaptation of the Japanese manga series Death Note. Since then nothing. Until now.
Recently Bleeding Cool caught up with Black to get an update. "Right now I’ve got this thing at Warner Bros. called Death Note that I like a lot. It’s a Japanese manga that’s very tense and really cool." Yeah, that's not exactly anything earth-shattering, but at least it means that they're still talking about it or Black wouldn't have brought it up.
Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note was originally published in Japan and later collected in 12 trade paperbacks that have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. The protagonist, Light, is a bright student who stumbles across a...

Well, not so much an "update" but more of a "hey, this project is still alive" status report. In early 2011, Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black was attached to do an American take on Death Note. Black, speaking to Bleeding Cool recently, assured them the project hasn't died with the following quote:
"Right now I’ve got this thing at Warner Bros. called Death Note that I like a lot. It’s a Japanese Manga that’s very tense and really cool."
There's not much to chew on there, but it's something. American redo rights were acquired in mid-2009. At the time, the studio tapped Charley and Vlas Parlapanides for a script, however, there were some changes behind the scenes.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures has bought an untitled science fiction pitch hatched by Chris Morgan and Zak Penn. Penn will write and direct, and Morgan will produce. It’s described as an action film in the vein of Chronicle, the Josh Trank-directed supernatural sleeper hit for Fox. Morgan will produce through his Chris Morgan Productions, the Universal-based shingle from which Morgan wrote and is producing The Fast And The Furious 6. Penn directed the improvisational poker player pic The Grand and had story credit on The Avengers and script credit on The Incredible Hulk and X-Men: The Last Stand. Morgan is also producing War Heroes with Michael De Luca, which Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are writing, and Crime Of The Century, a pitch being written by Dan Kunka for Dan Trachtenberg to direct. Latter was Morgan’s first sale to Universal last year after he made the overall deal.

Chicago – Franchise-churning Hollywood has become so desperate to launch a bankable series every month that it’s now resigned to scouring the past for material, from oft-told faerie tales and outdated fantasy novels to familiar mythological figures. The premise of “Immortals” sounds like the spawn of an especially cynical business deal (“It’s Greek myths meets ‘300!’”), and results in a picture as dull and forgettable as the “Clash of the Titans” remake.
What a better place we would be if Zack Snyder’s pompous and soulless graphic novel adaptation “300” hadn’t turned into a box office smash. Since 2006, audiences have had to endure an unending succession of films and TV shows that stage slow-mo battles against an entirely digital backdrop. The high levels of ultra-violence fail to leave an ounce of impact, since everything on the screen is so aggressively artificial. “Immortals” is little more than the latest cinematic equivalent of an interminable video game.

Much like 300, the flick Immortals is one of those movies that just make your manhood feel a bit heavier while watching. Theatres should have served steaks and beers instead of popcorn and soda! Unfortunately, despite taking its opening weekend, Tarsem Singh's Immortals seems likely to go as under-appreciated as his masterpiece, The Fall. Whether or not it manages to hold onto a solid fanbase, as is the case with the quite similar 300, remains to be seen, but critics have not taken to the film generally.
Usually, the overall consensus of critics at large is something that I'm only accidentally aware of at all, and the fact that moviegoers rate a film in the polar opposite direction simply the natural course of events, but in this case I find it rather perplexing. I say that because the film is so brilliant in so many ways, and at the same time so convoluted and disinterested in explaining itself that you would think the action-adventure would hardly make up for it to Mr. and Mrs. 18-35 year old American. No offense.
