Prime Video’s “Fallout,” inspired by the video game series, is launching an awards campaign ahead of this year’s Emmys, with the streamer eyeing nominations for outstanding drama series among others. Variety has exclusively learned the Emmy campaign strategies for its main actors: Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten.
Goggins, portraying the mutated gunslinger Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul, and Purnell, playing young Vault Dweller Lucy, are both in the running for lead acting categories. Moten, who plays Maximus, the Brotherhood of Steel’s squire, aims for a supporting actor nod.
Set in an alternate history post-apocalyptic Earth, “Fallout” depicts the lives of survivors in Vaults, designed to preserve humanity following nuclear catastrophe. More than two centuries later, a young woman Lucy emerges from Vault 33 to explore a devastated Los Angeles.

It’s wild that we don’t have more recognition for the art of casting. Casting directors have a guild with an Academy branch, but not their own Oscar category. While the work can often seem alchemical or opaque to outsiders, casting directors are really in the first line of storytellers who collaborate on a film; they have to see and expand on a director’s vision for the film’s world and find the actors who will embody what the filmmakers aim to create. So IndieWire is bringing back an old pre-pandemic feature to celebrate the storytelling work of casting.
We reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this year. As it turns out, though, the casting directors we spoke to had lots of films with casting they loved this year. “Being asked to...

Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, as well as Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, are set to star in historical drama “Nuremberg,” Bluestone Entertainment and Walden Media announced.
Director James Vanderbilt, known for writing and producing “Zodiac” prior to his directorial debut with “Truth,” wrote the script based on the book “The Nazi and the Psychiatrist” by Jack El-Hai. The rights to the book were acquired by Bluestone Entertainment, Walden Media and Széchenyi Fund — who are also financing the film.
The film will follow Malek as an American psychiatrist tasked to determine if Nazi prisoners are fit to stand trial for their war crimes. He finds himself in a battle of the wits with Hitler’s right-hand man, played by Crowe. Shannon will portray Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, the chief prosecutor in the Nuremburg trials.
“What an absolute honor it is to be working with such a tremendously talented group of actors.

In Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) only briefly appears. The famous scientist shares a few scenes with Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) himself, but these interactions are pivotal to the Manhattan Project, and the haunting realization about the world's future towards the end. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the involvement of the real Einstein in the creation of the atomic bomb — while the scientist's popular E = mc^2 equation does explain the theoretical nitty-gritty of the massive energy released by an atomic bomb, it does not provide any instructions for actually building one. Einstein was, in fact, denied security clearance to be involved with the Manhattan Project, and did not have a close relationship with Oppenheimer until the last decade of his life.

It seems a little trite and obvious to put into words, but the film "Oppenheimer" had to be made carefully when it came to the movie's optics. The ostensible protagonist of the biopic is J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), a man whose life and legacy are fraught with numerous political, social, and moral issues that cannot be easily resolved in reality, let alone a single motion picture. Added to that is writer/director Christopher Nolan's unique approach to telling his story, which revolves around adopting an intensely subjective point of view, an aesthetic that began with the movie's script being written in the first person (from Oppenheimer's perspective) and continued as far as the depiction of a number of surreal, dreamlike visions that Oppenheimer experiences during the film.

If you are going to do a so-called “hilarious” comedy dealing with cancer you better know how to do it. Unfortunately, writer/director Jennifer Cram, for her first feature film in those jobs, does not knock it out of the park.
Sick Girl which stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, a bit of a mess of a 30ish woman whose spur-of-the-moment little white lie about having cancer spirals out of control, would need a satirist along the lines of an Adam McKay to actually pull off this misbegotten comedy which is simply more cringe-inducing than funny, and Cram, whose previous work has been in Casting just can’t find the right tone to make it work. The premise may have sounded good on paper but it quickly turns into a one-joke idea stretched way beyond its worth. Lionsgate is opening this Friday day and date in theatres and VOD, the latter...

The father of the atomic bomb will soon be given the Christopher Nolan treatment, with "Oppenheimer" set to continue the working relationship between the director and star, Cillian Murphy. The two have previously worked together on five separate projects, dating all the way back to 2005's "Batman Begins," when Murphy played The Scarecrow opposite Christian Bale as the Dark Knight.
Nolan's first movie in the "Dark Knight" trilogy introduced a new generation to Batman after "Batman & Robin" nearly killed off the franchise altogether back in the '90s. There was so much that made the film a success, from the well-paced origin story to the focus on keeping things grounded while never forgetting that this was a comic-book blockbuster. Bale's portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman went a long way to redefining the character, too. And as you might expect from a director working on his first major blockbuster,...

A rousing gunfight between the Dutton crew and some local sheep owners led to a shocking conclusion Sunday on 1923, with one major member of the famed ranch taking a fatal hit. That’s right, Taylor Sheridan fans: no one is safe from his fictitious bullets, even a prized member of the Dutton family
Here, James Badge Dale — the actor best known for The Departed — talks about playing John Dutton Sr. for only three episodes and how he knew from the start that his days on 1923 weren’t going to last forever.
Deadline: So is it an honor to be killed off from a Taylor Sheridan drama?
James Badge Dale: I’m so happy to finally be able to talk...

Do you hear that? That distant popping sound? It’s the sound of Netflix bosses cracking open the champagne. Last month, it was announced that Wednesday, the streamer’s series based on the Addams Family character, had become quite the hit. According to data released by Netflix, it surpassed Stranger Things’s record as the platform’s most-watched title ever in a single week. These results claimed that the show had been streamed for a grand total of 341.2 million hours after just seven days. One week later, Wednesday broke its own record, and now has amassed streams of more than 400 million hours. Brilliant news for those involved with the show, but not so great for the future of the small screen.
Wednesday is perfectly serviceable television. It’s jauntily soundtracked (Danny Elfman), indelibly costumed (Colleen Atwood) and excellently cast (John Papsidera and Sophie Holland) – without its spellbinding lead star Jenna Ortega,...

Take a piece of intellectual property, slap it onto a trendy genre, and presto: You’ve got a hot new show. That’s the formula that’s been feeding streaming content for some time now. Why can’t Marvel superheroes lead a sitcom, like “She-Hulk”? How about we make “Perry Mason” a dark and gritty seasonal anthology, rather than a case-of-the-week courtroom drama? What if “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” wasn’t a bright and bubbly comedy, but a moody and melodramatic teen mystery?
Mapping the teen drama template onto known characters has been a specialty of The CW in particular, and thus a boon for Netflix (which served as the network’s streaming home for more than a decade). From “Smallville” to “Riverdale,” it seemed like name recognition + soapy high school shenanigans was the simple equation to success. And here we are again with “Wednesday,” Alfred Gough and Miles Millar...

“The Flight Attendant” is a major contender for the 2021 Emmy Awards. The hour-long thriller is on track to be the first Best Comedy Series nominee for HBO Max; the streaming service launched last year with only Anna Kendrick vehicle “Love Life” in contention for the 2020 cycle. “The Flight Attendant” debuted its eight-episode first season last fall, then picked up bids for both Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress for Kaley Cuoco early this year at both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
It more importantly also scored nominations from seven industry guilds and societies that overlap memberships with the Television Academy that votes on the Emmys. This set of seven tied it with “Ted Lasso” to lead all comedies that aired in 2020. 16 of the key creatives behind “The Flight Attendant” chatted with Gold Derby via webcam to discuss making the show, reflect on their recent nominations and preview the ordered next season.

“Ideas come from everywhere. The reality is everybody in the world thinks they are a casting director,” says two-time Emmy Award-winning casting director John Papsidera in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above). He contends this year with the first season of “The Flight Attendant,” which he cast with Beth Bowling and Kim Miscia, the two-time nominated pair that put Jon Hamm in “Mad Men” and gave Chadwick Boseman his first role. Papsidera continues, “The reality is that if you’re open to the process and open to doing your job in a real thoughtful — not ‘important,’ but thorough — way that those things come to you and it comes in all different shapes and manners, so I try and remain as open as I can to the process and to seeing people because that’s how you find people.”

The life of Fallon Fox, the first openly transgender fighter in Mixed Martial Arts, is the subject of a new film in development at Mark Gordon Pictures.
Fox’s story will be scripted by wedded writing team T Cooper and Allison Glock-Cooper, whose credits include NBC’s “The Blacklist,” BBC America’s “Copper” and Netflix’s “The Get Down.”
Originally hiding her transgender identity when she began competing in Mma, Fox feared transphobia would bring rejection from the wildly popular league. After nearing the upper echelons in ring, a journalist threatened to out Fox, who then boldly told her truth in interviews with Outsports and Sports Illustrated. The stories both inspired and caused backlash as well as further transphobic rhetoric in a debate over whether a woman who was assigned male at birth should be able to fight in women’s divisions in Mma.
Fox will serve as a consultant on the project.

A biopic chronicling the life of Fallon Fox, the first openly transgender Mma fighter, is getting the big-screen treatment from Mark Gordon Pictures and husband and wife writing team T Cooper and Allison Glock-Cooper.
Fox originally hid her transgender identity when she began competing professionally as a mixed martial arts fighter, fearful that transphobia would lead to her being rejected by the league. As she began to triumph in the ring and neared the pro semifinals, Fox received the phone call she had been dreading: a journalist threatening to out her to the world. Fox took the narrative into her own hands, revealing that she is a transgender woman in an Outsports and Sports Illustrated article in 2013. What followed was an onslaught of vitriolic, transphobic abuse from the world press and the Mma league, and an explosively controversial debate over whether a woman who was assigned male at birth should...

On March 16, 2001, Christopher Nolan announced himself to the world with the US release of Memento. Not that everyone heard him straight away.
Despite garnering rave reviews on the festival circuit, Nolan’s mind-bending jigsaw puzzle of a movie failed to land a major distribution deal in the States. In the end Newmarket Films, the independent production company bankrolling the project, took the plunge and distributed it themselves.
Memento went on to earn more than $45 million at the US box office from a $4.5 million budget – a huge sum for an independent film.
Within five years, Nolan would move on to bigger and Bat-er things, but Memento remains among his most ambitious and effective films to date. A non-linear neo-noir that doubles up as a psychological thriller, it’s a film that continues to offer up subtle surprises on repeat viewing.

The casting branch of the academy is only six years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 34 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”). This year’s awards took place on Thursday (Jan. 30) on both coasts. At the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, winners included three of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture: “Jojo Rabbit,” “Marriage Story”” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” (see full list of winners below).

Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the Oscars, “Dunkirk” did the best at the guild awards. It ended up winning with five (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards) of the 11 at which it contended. It lost with the actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors and producers. This WWII epic had not been in the running with the makeup artists & hairstylists or writers.
“The Shape of Water” was nominated at a whopping 12 ceremonies (having been snubbed only by the Visual Effects Society). It prevailed with four, including a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, when it won Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” This fantasy film also won with the directors, producers and art directors.
“Darkest Hour” won with the actors and makeup artists & hairstylists. “Get Out” chalked up victories with the directors and writers. And “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,...

“The Shape of Water” pulled off a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, winning Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” That unexpected outcome marked its fourth win from the 11 guilds weighing in to date. This fantasy film previously prevailed with the directors, producers and art directors. It is in contention with the two remaining groups on deck: the makeup artists & hair stylists and sound editors. The only group with which it did not contend this awards season was the Visual Effects Society.
Of the other Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk” has gone four for nine at these precursor prizes (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in the running with the sound editors.
“Blade Runner 2049” won with both groups that held awards last weekend: the cinematographers and sound editors. It had previously prevailed with the art directors.

Of the nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture, “Dunkirk” is faring best with the guild awards. It has won with four of the 10 to date (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in contention at two of the remaining three groups (costume designers, sound mixers) but missed out on any recognition from the makeup artists & hair stylists. Those three guilds will hand out awards during final voting for the Oscars, which kicks off on Feb. 20 for eight days.
While “Dunkirk” racked up nominations from 11 of the 13 guilds (it was also snubbed by the writers), “The Shape of Water” did it one better, with only the Visual Effects Society overlooking this fantasy film in its nominations. It won with three groups to date: the directors, producers and art directors. And it is in contention at all three of the upcoming awards.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” is in contention for prizes from 12 of the 13 guilds. The one group that didn’t nominate it, the Visual Effects Society, held its awards on Feb. 13. One of the other eight Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk,” won best supporting visual effects here. That brought its overall recognition from the guilds up to three, having previously prevailed with the casting directors and film editors.
This latest win ties this WWII epic with “The Shape of Water,” which has also been cited by three of the eight groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.
