“Audiences will have their sense of humanity refreshed.”
Actors Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West, director Matthew Warchus and the filmmakers of Pride discuss the background of this emotional story in the new featurette.
Critics are already cheering the film. “Breakout British hit is a warm, witty triumph,” says Digital Spy.
The Hollywood News writes, “Pride really is a thing of beauty.”
Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.
It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, and Paddy Considine, the first trailer for Pride is here.
In their Cannes 2014 review, HeyUGuys‘ Jo-Ann Titmarsh wrote: “A feel-good movie about the 1984 miners’ strike, Thatcherism and the scourge of Aids is a tough nut, but with Pride Matthew Warchus has cracked it. Garnering an ovation on its premiere here in Cannes, Pride can certainly feel proud of itself.”
The screenplay is from Stephen Beresford, whose debut stage play, The Last of the Haussmans (starring Julie Walters), was a critical and commercial hit at the National Theatre in 2012.

At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) handed out the 2013 Eddie Awards last night and the race didn't change too much, that is unless you were confused as to who the two primary front-runners heading into next Sunday's Oscars were. Argo (edited by William Goldenberg, A.C.E.) and Silver Linings Playbook (edited by Jay Cassidy, A.C.E. and Crispin Struthers) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy/Musical) respectively. Brave won in the Animated category while presumptive Best Documentary winner, Searching for Sugar Man won in the Documentary category. Of course, just to keep things interesting and ensure "Team Lincoln" didn't go home entirely empty handed, Steven Spielberg received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor presented to him by longtime collaborator and friend Kathleen Kennedy. I've already updated the Oscar Overture with the wins for Argo and Silver Linings as the path...

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) announced the nominees for the 2013 Ace Eddie Awards today and among them are all five Oscar nominees, four of them -- Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty -- in the Dramatic category and the fifth, Silver Linings Playbook, in the Comedy/Musical category. There isn't really too much else to say about the noms considering in previous years these nominations came out before the Oscar nominations were announced giving reason to speculate on which of the several films would end up nominated for Oscars. Considering that's not the case this year, this will all become a little more interesting when they announce their winners on Saturday, February 16. For now, the nominees are listed below in the Dramatic, Musical or Comedy, Animated and Documentary categories. Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic): Argo - William Goldenberg, A.C.E. If the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 really are a sign of what we have to expect at the 85th Academy Awards, then the Oscar winners are going to be split between every deserving film and performance to be nominated this year. While "Silver Linings Playbook" won the most awards with Best Comedy Movie, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Best Ensemble, all other major awards were split between "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
Of course, there's no good way to judge who will win Best Director as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't nominate CCAs winner Ben Affleck for the award. It should help that the film also took home Best Picture, which bodes well for its Oscar chances. It's still a toss-up to see who will take home which awards on Feb. 24, but for now things are looking good for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Argo,...

"Argo" F...yourself! Ben Affleck's "Argo" was the big winner at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. The film won Best Picture with Affleck, infamously snubbed by the Academy, took home the Best Director award. I say...Yay!
Voted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a proud member, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards have been regarded as a better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes. Heck, we even give talented directors their well-deserved praise! Ha!
Affleck received the loudest standing ovation after winning the Best Director award for "Argo." Also receiving standing ovation was Daniel Day-Lewis for his Best Actor win for "Lincoln." Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for "Zero Dark Thirty," while Philip Seymour Hoffman took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for "The Master" and Anne Hathaway (another hurray!) received the Best Supporting Actress Award for "Les Miserables."

There are a lot of kids’ tables at the Critics’ Choice Film Awards.
By that, I mean there is literally a children’s category among the contenders — best young actor/actress — which separates Quvenzhané Wallis of Beasts of the Southern Wild, who is also nominated in the overall lead actress category, from her adult peers.
And there are also separate “kids’ table”-type groups for not only comedies (which the Golden Globes does, too) but action and sci-fi/horror movies, which isolates those projects and actors from contention in the traditional, non-genre categories. The group also includes a “best ensemble...

Anna Karenina is acclaimed director Joe Wright’s bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, stirringly adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s great novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). The film marks the third collaboration of the director with Academy Award-nominated actress Keira Knightley and Academy Award-nominated producers Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Paul Webster, following their award-winning box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement.
The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community. The film is in theaters November 30, 2012.

With the release of the imfamous tale Anna Karenina sweeping across the country, I recently got the chance to speak with Keira Knightley, who plays Anna Karenina, in a round table discussion about the film. Check out the interview below.
The timeless story powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart while illuminating the lavish society that was imperial Russia. The time is 1874. Vibrant and beautiful, Anna Karenina (Ms. Knightley) has what any of her contemporaries would aspire to; she is the wife of Karenin (Jude Law), a high-ranking government official to whom she has borne a son, and her social standing in St. Petersburg could scarcely be higher. She journeys to Moscow after a letter from her philandering brother Oblonsky (Matthew Macfadyen) arrives, asking for Anna to come and help save his marriage to Dolly (Kelly Macdonald). En route, Anna makes the acquaintance of Countess...

By setting much of Tolstoy's masterpiece inside a theatre, Joe Wright both dazzles and distances the viewer
Tom Stoppard, a fluent and sensitive adaptor, has made a distinguished job of carving a workable screenplay from Tolstoy's 950-page novel, and Joe Wright has found a distinctive way of bringing it to the screen with Keira Knightley as Anna, Jude Law as her middle-aged, cuckolded husband, Karenin, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as her dashing lover, Count Vronsky. The last serious attempt to film Anna Karenina was by Bernard Rose in 1997, a lumbering work shot largely on Russian locations in the style of Dr Zhivago, with Sophie Marceau hopelessly inadequate as Anna, James Fox inexpressive as Karenin and Sean Bean virile in a rather unaristocratic way as Vronsky.
Having felt with some justification that he hadn't done justice to this towering masterpiece, Rose subsequently set about making innovative, low-budget versions of lesser Tolstoy fictions.

Joe Wright's adaptation of "Anna Karenina" has been in that awkward place between "done deal" and misty could-fall-apart for much of 2011. Cast members flitted in and out, rumors swirled, and Wright was said to be waiting on Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy before settling down to actually direct. But now it's a go! Wright is officially directing "Anna Karenina" with Keira Knightley as the doomed titular heroine, Jude Law as her cuckolded husband Aleksei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson as the dashing Count Vronsky. They headline a very exciting and glittery cast that includes Kelly MacDonald, Matthew Macfayden, and Emily Watson. (He may not have gotten Ronan or McAvoy, but he still managed to reunite with two of his former leads in Knightley and Macfayden.) I'm actually really excited for this. I'm a sucker for a good literary adaptation, and Wright has proved he can work magic with classics of...
