Joe Alwyn is enjoying a day out with Mona Fastvold.
The 33-year-old Conversations with Friends actor shared a laugh with the 38-year-old Norwegian filmmaker as they headed to lunch on Tuesday afternoon (April 2) in London, England.
Photos: Check out the latest pics of Joe Alwyn
For his outing, Joe sported a dark maroon sweater and jeans paired with a Yankees baseball hat and sunglasses.
Last year, Joe filmed his upcoming movie The Brutalist, which Mona co-wrote the screenplay for with her husband and director Brady Corbet. Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce also star in the movie.
Here’s the synopsis, from Deadline: “The Brutalist chronicles thirty years of an artist’s life. When visionary architect László Toth (Brody) and his wife Erzsébet (Jones) flee post-war Europe to rebuild their legacy in America, a mysterious and wealthy client (Pearce) ends up changing their lives forever.”
The Brutalist doesn’t have a release date yet.

Eight years before "Saturday Night Live" started stirring up trouble for NBC, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was the counterculture bane of CBS' programming existence. And unlike the surprisingly game gang at 30 Rockefeller Center, the suits at the Eye (that's the nickname for CBS' logo) could not be mollified by high ratings.
The enmity between CBS and Smothers was forged by a perfect confluence of time and content. When the variety show premiered on February 5, 1967, the United States was waging two very different wars on two geographically inconvenient fronts. The country had just entered its second year of full-on, boots-on-the-ground combat in Vietnam, and though a slim majority still supported the conflict, the nation's youth weren't keen on getting drafted to fight an enemy that didn't pose an immediate physical threat to America. This unease dovetailed with the unrest at home: anti-war protests, the ongoing Civil Rights Movement, and a...

In its 50 year history, few sketches are as steeped in SNL lore as The Olympia Café.
First performed on the show in January 1978, it recurred six times over a fifteen month period, forever burning the phrases “No Coke, Pepsi” and “cheeburger, cheeburger, cheeburger” into the 70s-era zeitgeist.
But while its legacy as one of the SNL’s most classic recurring sketches is uncontested, the origins of the sketch itself are… well, murky.
SNL writer Don Novello, who wrote the first Olympia Café sketch, has long contended that it was based on the real-life Billy Goat Tavern on Lower North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, which Novello frequented when he lived in the second city in the 60s and 70s.
The Billy Goat has fully embraced Novello’s story, and indeed to this day, a visit to the restaurant feels a lot like stepping into the SNL sketch, complete with chants of...

Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

Tom Smothers, who with his younger brother Dick changed the face of comedy with their musical humor and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle. The news was announced by the National Comedy Center, on behalf of Smothers’ family. He was 86.
Tom and Dick Smothers started out as folk musicians in the early ’60s, and soon discovered that, while they were not good enough to be professional musicians, the act worked if they mixed in comedy.
Dick Smothers said in a statement, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another.

Don Novello is a versatile American performer, writer, and comedian with a remarkable career spanning decades. The actor himself was born into a Catholic family on January 1, 1943, in Lorain, Ohio. Novello’s claim to fame is tied to his role as Saturday Night Live‘s Father Guido Sarducci, a witty and sarcastic Catholic priest with a coffee and cigarette addiction. The character became a permanent fixture in the popular sketch series during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Novello’s distinct voice, irreverent humor, and sharp wit have made him a cherished personality in American popular culture. With that in mind,...

Following his pair of directorial features, The Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux, we’ve been waiting a few years for new updates on Brady Corbet’s third film, The Brutalist. Initially announced back in the fall of 2020 with the cast of Joel Edgerton, Marion Cotillard, Mark Rylance, Sebastian Stan, Vanessa Kirby, Raffey Cassidy, Isaach De Bankolé, Alessandro Nivola, and Stacy Martin, production has now finally kicked off albeit with a new ensemble.
Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce will now lead the film, co-written by Corbet and his partner Mona Fastvold, which chronicles 30 years in the life of one artist’s enduring monolithic vision. “Amidst a revamped cycle of populism and prejudice in the 21st Century, The Brutalist is a film which celebrates the triumphs of the most daring and accomplished visionaries; our ancestors. It is the project which is so far the closest to my heart and family history,...

This Evil review contains spoilers.
Evil Season 3 Episode 8
Evil, season 3 episode 8 “The Demon of Parenthood” is a mother of an episode. It goes so far over the top in its conspiratorial suspense the entire proceedings veer dangerously close to spoof. The opening scene between Father David (Mike Colter) and Victor LeConte (Brian d’Arcy James) would have worked on Get Smart. The circuitous language is as audaciously audible in the private confessional as the Cone of Silence at the Chief’s office at Control. The week’s case comes off as a self-parody even before the monster-of-the-week gives Ben (Aasif Mandvi) the finger.
Say what you want about Evil, it never loses its entertainment value. We may stretch imaginations or roll eyes, but we don’t look away. Some of the gore effects may be tempting, but the payoffs are always worth the effort. It is because it plays so close to comedy the fears work,...

After nearly a decade with Wings, in 1979, Paul McCartney decided to make a record for himself, by himself, as he’d done with his first solo album, 1970’s McCartney. So he retreated to his Scotland farm with a bunch of synthesizers and bleeped and blooped his way into one of his most subversive albums, McCartney II, a record that — even 40 years after it came out, on May 16th, 1980 — Macca fans are still trying to make sense of.

From 1990 to 1994, Julia Sweeney was part of one of the most remarkable Saturday Night Live casts in the history of the iconic late-night comedy show. Sweeney performed alongside some of the most notable names in the game on the stage at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center: Chris Rock Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Tim Meadows, David Spade as well as the late greats Chris Farley and Phil Hartman. She is best known for her androgynous character “Pat” (which we get into later) as well as various TV roles. But after a bout with cancer, and the loss of her brother who also had cancer, she ducked out of the spectacle of TV and film and opted to take the stage for autobiographical monologues. She even stepped further away from the limelight to raise her adopted Chinese daughter named Mulan (we’ll get to that later as well) and live...

One of the big questions many have coming away from Lisa D’Apolito’s mesmerizing feature documentary Love, Gilda which kicked off Tribeca on Wednesday is why Gilda Radner Saturday Night Live peers Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and even Father Guido Sarducci (aka Don Novello) aren’t interviewed in the movie.
Truth be told D’Apolito did in fact reach out to all of Radner’s peers -well over 100 names- however, some never responded. No hard feelings, D’Apolito gets it.
“It’s hard for everybody (to talk about Radner),” says the director, “People loved her so much and to talk about her, was very painful because it brought back that loss. I totally understand why people didn’t want to be in it. It’s personal.”

Nathalie Baye and Xavier BeauvoisThe strength of women left alone to fend for themselves is the communal focus of actor and director Xavier Beauvois’s The Guardians. After directing Of Gods and Men (2010), Beauvois’s excellent neo-western set among French monks in Algeria, we lost sight of this under-estimated director—his next was a quasi-comedy I’m dying to see about ruffians stealing Chaplin’s corpse—though it was a delight to encounter him earlier this year before the camera as one of Juliette Binoche’s many love (and sex) interests in Claire Denis’s Let the Sunshine In. I am very glad indeed that Beauvois is back in the director’s seat and in the international spotlight with The Guardians, adapted from an obscure 1924 novel by Ernest Pérochon about a struggling farmstead on the home front of the First World War, and one of the exceptional films of the year.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

It would be easy to think that the last name Coppola is a shortcut to becoming a filmmaker, but that would be dismissive, and honestly, sort of backwards. At this point, living up to that last name must be an intimidating prospect, but with her first film, Gia Coppola proves herself to be a deeply empathic filmmaker with a great sense of atmosphere. "Palo Alto," based on a collection of short stories by James Franco, is a lovely debut film, and a strong expression of just how it feels to be a teenager struggling to figure out your place in the world. Forget about narrative. Forget about whether things add up in a typical A-b-c fashion. What makes "Palo Alto" special is the way it captures certain feelings, and it's not an easy thing. There were moments in the film where I found myself almost completely transported back to those long,...

My So Called Strife: A Coppola Debuts With a Flurry of Restless Teens
Hollywood nepotism and the tableau of the teenage wasteland make for oddly striking bedfellows in Palo Alto, the directorial debut of Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford, niece of Sofia and Roman. Adapted from a short story collection from James Franco, who also stars, the presence of Emma Roberts and Jack Kilmer (son of Val, who appears in a minor supporting role) adds to the ambience of insulation in this strikingly composed debut. Ultimately, we’ve seen this all before, the woebegone angst of the privileged teen, whether smart or dumb, ambitious or rebellious, angry or hopeful, as told via a series of intersecting personalities that may tweak our own nostalgic memories of that mixed up zenith of apathy and blind motivation. At times profound in its poetry of unfulfilling moments, the material is just as equally banal and not entirely memorable.

James Franco's book has been made into a movie, courtesy of Francis Ford Coppola's granddaughter Gia Coppola. Marking Gia's feature debut as a writer and director, "Palo Alto" premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 29 -- and Vulture has released a sneak-peek trailer, featuring stars Franco and Emma Roberts.
"In every town," the trailer reads, "there are girls looking for love, boys looking for trouble, men looking for both." The movie concerns a series of intersecting micro-threads, with Franco playing a high school soccer coach who falls for one of his players (Roberts) and Nat Wolff and Jack Kilmer, whose father Val is also in the movie, co-starring as a couple of troubled kids.

I’m actually angry at how little the movie even tries. There isn’t enough of anything here to pad out a brief sketch, never mind a feature-length film. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): the trailer is hideous and unfunny
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
And here I was all excited about the revolution in VOD. In case you were under any delusion that all these movies debuting on-demand indicated a shift away from nontheatrical releases as anything other than a dumping ground, here comes the monstrous Hell Baby to set you straight. Oh, it’s not monstrous in any good way… and there should be a good monstrosity to a film that purports to be a horror comedy; there should also be something — anything! — funny about it. I’m actually angry at how little writers and directors Robert Ben Garant...

It's a little weird to watch a trailer for an upcoming Disney cartoon like "Planes" and hear among the characters the voice of Dane Cook. What's a typically adults-only comic like Cook doing in the G-rated world of a Disney animated feature?
Well, maybe it's not that weird. After all, the family-friendly studio has a history, going back 60 years, of casting performers from the world of grown-up entertainment in its cartoons, and most have proved they can be fun and kid-safe in fantasy worlds far from smoky nightclubs. In fact, Disney and Pixar's classic cartoons are full of unlikely voice actors -- not just blue comics but also performers cast radically against type, and even people not considered actors at all.
Cook, then, joins a distinguished list of stars you'd never have expected to find in a Disney cartoon feature, as you can see from the gallery below.

Archer, Season 4, Episode 11: “The Papal Chase”
Story by Eric Sims
Teleplay by Adam Reed
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on FX
With the world’s attention turned towards the Vatican with the recent shakeups in the Papacy, “The Papal Chase” is an oddly relevant episode of Archer, or, at least, as relevant as any episode of Archer can be. The plot concerns a cardinal staging a hit on the Pope, and hiring Isis to protect him (because of their reputation for incompetence) in order to establish an alibi. However, with Archer, the how is always significantly more interesting than the why.
Woodhouse has been largely absent from the season’s proceedings and his presence here tonight highlights what a shame that is. His heroin addiction seems only to have intensified during his absence, allowing Lana the wonderful line “is there some amount you can shoot up to get right...

Continuing our ongoing Archer series, executive producer Matt Thompson gives Vulture the lowdown on each episode's inside jokes and obscure references. In last night's installment, "The Papal Chase," Archer must rescue the Pope from an assassination plot. Here, Thompson tells us about bubble cars, Guido Sarducci, and that blink-and-you-missed-it Sealab shout-out. Father Guido Sarducci At one point, Pam calls Archer Father Guido Sardouchebag. It’s not an obscure reference if you've been around for a while. Father Guido Sarducci is the No. 1 most recurring character ever to appear on Saturday Night Live. In this episode, Archer looks exactly like him. Basically, he’s a Catholic priest who serves as the in-house rock critic for the Vatican. From whispers we've caught so far 'Twixt' is unlikely to be legendary Us filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola's ultimate return to form. Francis Ford Coppola's new mystery thriller 'Twixt' isn't exactly sounding like a particularly exciting prospect. It's one of the many projects that either features a version of the classic American poet Edgar Allan Poe or is at least based upon his past works. Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, Joanne Whalley, David Paymer, Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Fusco, Don Novello and Ryan Simpkins all star in Coppola's new movie. Poe in this feature is portrayed by British actor Ben Chaplin ('Lost Souls', 'Dorian Gray'). The Kino Gallery have revealed a new international one-sheet from the movie as we wait with bated breathe at the prospect of a general release, or at best a direct to DVD announcement. We love Shirley on 'Community' almost as much as we love Yvette Nicole Brown, so this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the Season 2 DVD (out today) is a real gem.
Creator Dan Harmon sat down with Brown -- in her full Father Guido Sarducci get-up from their last paintball duel, naturally -- to pat himself on the back for something he believes he achieved this year. "I fully and completely captured the 'Black Woman Experience' with your character this year," Harmon said straight-faced, to which Brown appropriately let out one of her fabulous signature laughs.
The clip also shows Harmon and Joel McHale reenacting a scene between Shirley and Britta (Gillian Jacobs), horrible imitations and all, before really diving into what's important: Season 3.
So what does Brown want to see happen for Shirley this season (premieres Thurs., Sept. 22, 8Pm...

Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival in September. Watching this trailer of Coppola's horror thriller, I couldn't help but wonder if it was meant to lure patrons into theaters or to scare them away. If this Twixt trailer is any indication of the sort of cinematic experience Coppola's latest movie will provide, then I guess I can affirm that it'll be nothing like The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, The Godfather: Part III, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, or even One from the Heart, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Dracula. Written and directed by Coppola, Twixt features Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, Elle Fanning, Joanne Whalley, Don Novello, Tom Waits, and David Paymer. It's expected to be released in the United States either later in 2011, or more likely, sometime in 2012.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s Twixt is something that we’ve covered a great deal on this site, but even things like stills don’t really tell us how this will look and feel as a film. Luckily, a trailer has arrived on Tiff’s YouTube channel (via FirstShowing), and it’s an extensive look at the director’s return to horror.
What strikes me the most about the preview is how much it truly feels like a Coppola movie. Those who have only seen The Godfather movies may not be aware of his penchant for including some stranger-than-normal touches, and the way he uses certain things — like black and white or fading — feels right at home in his filmography. And the line about writing for profit? Anybody who knows the man’s history knows how much that must mean to him. I’m not sure if that music we hear is from composer Dan Deacon,...

When I listened to Francis Ford Coppola give a master class at last year’s Marrakech Film Festival, some of the most valuable information imparted was about the creative process. So that’s what struck me when I watched this trailer of his latest film, Twixt, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. Val Kilmer stars as a mass market horror novelist, and there’s clearly some kind of meditation going on about the workings of the imagination. As quoted at First Showing, Coppola says the film “‘was inspired by the eerie writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe’ and came to him in a vivid dream he had while on a trip to Istanbul.” There’s also Elle Fanning picking up on her zombie role in Super 8; Kilmer reuniting, on screen, with his ex, Joanne Whalley; and, in the credits, Tom Waits and Don Novello (!). And,...

Francis Ford Coppola's panel for his new film Twixt was one of the absolute highlights of Comic Con this year. (It was one of the highlights of my entire run of Comic Con experiences, truth be told.) Not necessarily because of the film, which may or may not actually be good, but because of the innovative manner in which it will be presented. You can read the full recap here [1], but in short Twixt stars Val Kilmer as a hack horror writer, Elle Fanning as a murdered small-town girl, Bruce Dern as the local sheriff, and Ben Chaplin as Edgar Allan Poe. It will be the focus of a roadshow this fall in which the film will be dynamically edited during the screening in response to audience reaction. Some scenes may be made longer or shorter, and other changes could occur. It's a great idea meant to bring some...

First picture from Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming horror indie film "Twixt" has been unleashed via Entertainment Weekly. The photo gives a look at Elle Fanning, who wears full makeup and all-white Gothic costume to portray ghost V. She is seen listening carefully to the Oscar-winning filmmaker who gives a direction to her on the set.
"Twixt" tells the story of Hall Baltimore (Val Kilmer), a writer with a declining career, who arrives in a small town as part of his book tour. There, he gets caught up in a murder mystery that involves a young girl. One night during his sleep, he is approached by a mysterious young ghost named V who leads him to the truth behind the murder story.
Back in November 2010, in an interview with New York Times, Coppola said that the idea of the movie actually "grew out of dream I had last year, more of a nightmare.

Up until this new image was released for Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, I had no idea what to expect from this new gothic horror thriller other than that it was going to be very unique. It was also described as an experimental film “one part Gothic romance, one part personal film, and one part the kind of horror film that began my career."
This image of Elle Fanning (Super 8) definitely has a unique look for Coppola, and actually looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie. It's not much to go off of, but I like what I see so far. The film also features Joanne Whalley, Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, Don Novello, David Paymer, and Alden Ehrenreich.

EW has the first look at Francis Ford Coppola’s return to horror in Twixt, starring Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Val Kilmer (Batman Forever).
Based on a dream Coppola had, the film follows a hack horror novelist (Val Kilmer) as ghostly visions in a bizarre small town lead him to explore the murder of a young girl (Elle Fanning). Joanne Whalley, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, Don Novello, David Paymer, and Alden Ehrenreich also star.
No word on a release date, although the director will be making a historical appearance at Sdcc ’11.

I don't know what I was expecting from Twixt, but this wasn't quite it. Francis Ford Coppola's latest film (formerly Twixt Now and Sunrise) is a gothic thriller of a sort, but one inspired by Hawthorne and Poe, filmed partly in 3D and featuring a soundtrack by analog knob-tweaking electronic musician Dan Deacon. The film will be previewed at Comic Con later this week -- the director's first visit to the San Diego event since 1991 -- and now we've got the first image. The on-set snap features, obviously, Mr. Coppola, and also Elle Fanning in costume and makeup seemingly inspired by Delirium from Sandman. See a slightly larger version below. EW [1] has the photo, and encapsulates the film as being about " a hack horror novelist (Val Kilmer) as ghostly visions in a bizarre small town lead him to explore the murder of a young girl (Elle Fanning)."
