Sonically, Chrome Canyon is a tripped out electric-pop mixture of epic sounds and dynamic rhythms. The blend of live instrumentation and synth is what makes his tunes so deliriously infectious. But in addition to his aural catalogue, Chrome Canyon has been amassing a dynamic video library for his debut full-length album, Elemental Themes (released on Stones Throw). 'Generations' is one of Chrome Canyon's first music video offerings from his upcoming LP. It's a short film directed by Ace Norton, with editing help from Chrome Canyon depicting images both bleak and beautiful. A couple, Lee Dysinger and Amanda Wells, are at odds in the suite of an La hotel, driven apart by what seems to be a divide of generations. The short culminates in a parking garage under the headlights of a car as the heroine dances her ballet, pleading to the lights, slamming her body against the concrete walls of...

With the exception of the FX comedy “Wilfred,” Elijah Wood has kept a low profile since the “Lord Of The Rings” trilogy ended, sticking to indies and genre fare, and he continues in that latter vein, joining the horror movie “Cooties.” Written by “Glee” co-creator Ian Brennan and “Insidious” scribe Leigh Whannell, the film stars Wood as “an unlikely hero [who] must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives" against elementary school students who have been transformed “into a feral swarm of mindless savages” after a mysterious virus hits. Commercial and music video director Ace Norton will be making his feature-length directorial debut. [Deadline] “Weeds,” “Think Like A Man” and "40 Year Old Virgin" actor Romany Malco will appear in what was undoubtedly pitched as the old-man version of “The Hangover,” the Dan Fogleman (“Crazy...

Elijah Wood is set to star in and produce a new horror film called Cooties that sounds pretty crazy! It comes from Leigh Whannell, the co-creator of Saw and Insidious, and Paranormal Activity Producer Steven Schneider.
Cooties was also co-written by Ian Brennan, writer and co-creator of Fox’s Glee, and it will be directed by Ace Norton. According to Styd "the film begins when a mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the pre-adolescent children into a feral swarm of mindless savages. An unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives against the monstrous pupils." Whannell had this to say in a statement,
My friend Ian Brennan and I wanted to write a film about one of life’s most universal experiences – hatred for precocious, adorable children. And so we started work on Cooties, a film about a virus that turns...

After dabbling with some scary performances throughout his career, Elijah Wood is going all in on the horror genre. Not only is he starring in the remake of William Lustig's grindhouse slasher movie Maniac, the actor recently started a production company called The Woodshed which will produce high quality independent horror films. ShockTilYouDrop points us to one of these upcoming projects, as Wood will star in and produce Cooties, an awesome-sounding project from Saw writer Leigh Wannell about a virus breaking out at an elementary school, turning the kids into monsters and forcing teachers to fight to survive. Music video director Ace Norton will make his narrative feature directorial debut here, and Wannell will co-write the script with "Glee" co-creator Ian Brennan. Wannell offered a brief comment: "My friend Ian Brennan and I wanted to write a film about one of life’s most universal experiences – hatred for precocious,...

If you're a horror fan, you might be skeptical about a film titled Cooties that was cowritten by the writer and cocreator of Glee. What if we told you that the movie was set to star Maniac actor Elijah Wood, is being produced and cowritten by Saw's Leigh Whannell, and Paranormal Activity 1-4 producer Steven Schneider was also behind it? Music video director Ace Norton — whose credits include projects like Death Cab for Cutie's "Crooked Teeth" and Scissor Sisters' "Any Which Way" — will be helming the feature about killer kids. A mysterious virus spreads to an isolated elementary school, where it infects preadolescent children, turning them into feral savages. The teachers band together to fight the miniature, but deadly, students...

New genre label Synchronicity Entertainment have announced another fresh horror offering hot on the heels of their recent release 'Smiley'. Their new project entitled 'Cooties' will star Elijah Wood ('Maniac') and has been co-penned by Ian Brennan and 'Saw' and 'Insidious' scribe Leigh Whannell. Ace Norton is on board to helm and horror producer Steven Schneider ('Paranormal Activity') will be overseeing the project. The story revolves aroud a mysterious virus that hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the pre-adolescent children into a feral swarm of mindless savages. An unlikely hero (Wood) must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives against the monstrous pupils. It sounds very reminiscent of 1998's 'The Faculty' whereby alien bodysnatchers took over the kids and teachers of a high school and which also featured Elijah Wood attempting to save the world. 'Cooties' is slated to shoot in April 2013 in La.

All right, all right, stop sniggering. Elijah Wood doesn’t have some playground infection. He’s actually locked in a deal to produce a horror movie called Cooties. It’s all part of a package announced by new genre distribution team Synchronicity Entertainment, which is also touting a new film starring John Cusack called Due Process.Let’s start with Cooties (seriously, stop giggling). It’ll be one of the first projects that Wood is backing (and may star in) via his Woodshed company. And it boasts a solid gory pedigree, since it comes from the bloody keyboard of Saw writer / executive producer Leigh Whannell.Ace Norton has megaphone duties for the new film, which finds a mysterious virus striking a school and turning the kids into a swarm of savages. Only an unlikely hero can lead a band of teachers against the monstrous spawn, in a sort of inverse take on The Faculty.

Long gone is the dust swept-up by little Frodo’s big, hairy feet. It looks like he’s going towards a much darker path now. Next up for actor Elijah Wood includes an entirely different role and journey; one that will keep the actor behind the camera rather than in front. Deadline has confirmed that the actor will be teaming up with producer Josh C. Waller and writer Daniel Noah to form The Woodshed, an independent production company focusing on horror features. Fright fans know that the actor isn’t afraid of heading into grisly territory as he played a killer in Sin City and stars in the upcoming remake of Maniac. Wood has also made several appearances at the genre loving film festival Fantastic Fest over the years. He tells Deadline,

Every since we saw Elijah Wood in Sin City, we knew this cat had a love of horror films in him, and the very good news is that he's taken said love to an entirely new level with his new shingle, The Woodshed.
Deadline reports that Wood has partnered with Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller to form The Woodshed, an indie company that will focus on genre fare. Not surprisingly, Wood is a horror fanatic. “I’ve been a fan of horror and genre cinema in general since I was a child and have become increasingly passionate about the idea of there being a space in which horror films that take their subject matter and characters seriously could be produced,” he said. “What was born out of a conversation of our mutual love for the genre and what we felt was lacking in a broad sense, especially from the U.

Once again, it's time for the return of Videodrome, our semi-regular showcase for the best music videos around. Since the form has given the world game-changing helmers in both the blockbuster and arthouse realms, it's always important to keep an eye on promos, and indeed, one could argue that there's more invention to be found in the short form than there is in features. So, without further ado, the five best music videos we've seen in the last few weeks. As ever, any tips and suggestions are more than welcome.
Passion Pit - "Take A Walk"
After a couple of years away, Massachusetts electro-pop collective Passion Pit are back with a new record that, on the evidence of the first couple of cuts, is set to blend the same big, anthemic choruses of their first album with some smarter, almost short-story like songwriting. For the first single from the album,...

Yesterday indie pop band Foster the People released their newest music video for the track "Call It What You Want" off of their debut album Torches. The video was directed by Ace Norton is trippy, surreal collage of outlandish images and situations including bassist Cubbie Fink making out with himself, drummer Mark Pontius playing in a bathtub and Mark Foster shooting female fans with his hand in the shape of a gun.

"Into the Wild" star Emile Hirsch hasn’t been around much since 2009’s "Taking Woodstock," and now, perhaps we know why: He's been working real hard on his directorial debut ... a music video for Daft Punk's "Alive," a song that was released 14 years ago.
We're not really sure why Hirsch chose the song — which comes at the tail end of Daft Punk's epochal 1997 album Homework — but we've got to admit, he's got quite the directorial flair: His video features a scrawny, skeevily-moustached Ace Norton (a director in his own right, having done clips for the likes of Norah Jones, She & Him and Bloc Party), as a amateur weightlifting enthusiast gearing up for battle against a more toned opponent, actor Frankie Levangie.
So, of course it features plenty of montages, including some spirited beach workouts, a touch of skateboarding, extreme Creatine chugging, and, of course, an epic final face-off,...

Exclusive Braxton Pope has acquired the rights to British author Will Self’s 1995 short story ‘A Rock of Crack as Big as the Ritz," TheWrap has learned. Paul Cuschieri ("Lords of Florence," "Speed of Light") will adapt the book, and Ace Norton, who has directed music videos for Death Cab for Cutie and LCD Soundsystem, will direct the feature film. "Rock of Crack" first appeared in Self's short story collection “Tough, Tough Toys for Tough, Tough Boys." The title, a play on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novella “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz,”...

Darwin Deez’ self-titled debut album is filled with catchy indie rock songs, and to promote them the new York-based singer has made a series of clever, eye-catching videos. The videos have a distinct visual sensibility (we were reminded of late-’70s nerd culture) and show amazing attention to detail given the shoestring budgets. Deez calls his approach “Diy mumbled with high concept.” It’s also worth noting that no instruments appear. “I felt there were umpteen performance videos in existence...

I’m a huge fan of artists and directors using music videos as fun little exercises in horror. Obviously, Aphex Twin’s “Come To Daddy” is one of the strongest that come to mind, and last year’s “Coffee” by Aesop Rock (I interviewed Ace Norton, the director of that clip and many others like it, here) was a four minute mix of genres and insanity. It looks like Kanye West is also taking the leap into the creepier side of things with his clip for “Monster” (which, if you’re not aware, is probably the best song on his recent release, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). A teaser for video hit today. Check it out below!

Scissor Sisters are playing with bright colors and hip-shaking moves in a newly-released music video supporting their single "Any Which Way". Some scenes even feature naked Jake Shears and some nude girls hiding their body behind a table lamp and other home props.
"Any Which Way" is the second single from the band's third studio album "Night Work". The music video is directed by Ace Norton (Norah Jones, Death Cab for Cutie) and was shot over two days in London, England.
Released in June this year, "Night Work" is led by single "Fire With Fire" and becomes Scissor Sisters' first album since parting ways with Paddy Boom in 2008. The split was cited as an amicable one. "He will always be our sister," they said back then.

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...
