Howard Rosenman made his way to a screening of Bradley Cooper’s Maestro at the Academy a few weeks back, and admits that before he took a seat, he really wanted to not like it.
The veteran producer (Father of the Bride, Call Me by Your Name) tried to sell a project based on the life and career of Leonard Bernstein years ago but says he “didn’t have the juice” to get it off the ground. But what Rosenman does have is close personal ties to the iconic composer, a man he says dramatically changed the course of his life — and then some. Instead of hating it, Rosenman, 78, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he was so floored by Cooper’s film that he couldn’t stop crying. “It’s a masterpiece,” he says.
The quick backstory. In 1967, Rosenman, who is Jewish, was in medical school in Philadelphia. Amid a rising conflict in Israel,...

Two years ago, Barbra Streisand celebrated becoming the only artist to score #1 albums in six consecutive decades with a rare concert tour. The video version of that, “Barbra: The Music… The Mem’ries… The Magic!,” streamed on Netflix last fall and is a strong contender at the upcoming Emmys. Over the years, Streisand has headlined two Emmy-winning variety specials (as did Bob Hope) and she’d set a new record with another victory.
Among the highlights of the concert, which was filmed in Miami, is her soaring duet with fellow Oscar winner Jamie Foxx on “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from “The Sound of Music.” There is a certain irony that Streisand chose to record this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic for her chart-topping 2016 album “Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway.” As a teenager, she’d auditioned to play eldest daughter Liesl in the national company of this Tony winner but couldn’t get past the casting director.

Today we are talking to uniquely compelling composer and lyricist known for her urbane wit and contemporary sensibility, having contributed music and lyrics to the recent Broadway musicals High Fidelity, Bring It On and Hands On A Hard Body as well as penning many other original musicals and unique standalone songs over the course of her career, Amanda Green. Discussing her famous musical theatre lineage - her father was legendary theatrical icon Adolph Green and her mother is famous actress Phyllis Newman - and sharing stories from her youth, Green sheds some light on her familial profession of choice and details the finer points of her own songwriting process, particularly insofar as it pertains to her two recent major musicals seen in New York. On that note, Green offers the 411 on the creative process in composing both the rappop-infused, high-school-set Bring It On alongside collaborators Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda...
