On paper, there’s no reason why “The Professor And The Madman” shouldn’t work. An adaptation of the great book by Simon Winchester, it tells the story behind the creation of the first Oxford English Dictionary by Professor James Murray (played by Mel Gibson), whose work became complicated thanks to the participation of Dr. W. C. Minor (played by Sean Penn), an inmate at an insane asylum.

Mel Gibson is back in business in Hollywood, with last year’s “Hacksaw Ridge” aiding the actor and filmmaker’s redemption arc. However, it hasn’t taken long for Gibson to fall into one of the industry’s favorite pastimes — lawsuits!
Last year, cameras started rolling on “The Professor And The Madman,” an adaptation of the great book by Simon Winchester, about the creation of the first Oxford English Dictionary by Professor James Murray (played by Gibson), whose work became complicated thanks to the participation of Dr.

They don’t make ’em like this any more, and the original TV spots for James Gray’s accurate retelling of history almost didn’t know how to sell it. Charlie Hunnam spends his life trying to solve a riddle of the Peruvian rainforest, in between fighting in WW1 and dealing with class prejudice. Yup, one could say the picture was filmed in a ‘classic’ style . . . can a show like that find an audience these days?

Excuse the twisting of a beloved comedian’s signature tune, but this new film’s theme could be “Hooray for Captain Fawcett, the Bolivian explorer!”. That’s Captain Percy Fawcett, to be specific. He’s the newest movie jungle adventurer, in the vein of Jungle Jim and Indiana Jones, except he was a real person. And he was the subject of a recent best-selling book. Now his exploits from nearly one hundred years ago have finally made it to the big screen. So is his quest to find The Lost City Of Z worthy of a far less treacherous trek to the local multiplex?
In 1906 Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) was a respected member of the British Royal Artillery, especially after shooting a stag during a big hunting competition. He’s got a beautiful supportive wife Nina (Sienna Miller) and an adorable tot named Jack. Unfortunately his military career has stalled,...

James Gray is a filmmaker who often seems to wind up having the worst luck. Whether it’s with a distributor or with his star acting up, Gray can’t seem to catch a break once his film is in the can. This time around, Brad Pitt and Plan B funded The Lost City of Z, with Amazon Studios picking it up for distribution. Aside from an initial 2016 release being pushed to this year, there weren’t any real hiccups. After premiering to a strong reception last year at The New York Film Festival, it hits theaters this week, hoping to finally give Gray the larger platform that he so deserves. The film, based on the book by David Grann, is a period piece about one explorer’s obsession. That individual is none other than British explorer Colonel Percival Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam). Percy Fawcett has long explored the Amazon, but...

James Gray makes films like an explorer, digging for the details that define character and art. The Lost City of Z doesn't look like Gray's other movies. Little Odessa, The Yards, We Own the Night, Two Lovers and The Immigrant mostly investigated the corners of his native New York. The Lost City of Z, set in Ireland, England and the Amazonian jungle at the start of the 20th Century, takes the Russian-Jewish Gray out of his comfort zone. His skilled screenplay, adapted from the 2009 book by David Gann, tells the story of Col.

Game of Thrones alum Natalie Dormer has landed a role opposite Sean Penn and Mel Gibson in the upcoming adaptation of Professor and the Madman, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
In the works at Icon Productions, it’s understood the addition of Dormer is one of the final pieces to fall into place for the long-gestating project, which will now be readied to shop to international buyers at Tiff 2016 before entering production in earnest late September. It hasn’t been for lack of trying, considering that Gibson – who embodies one half of that title duo as Professor James Murray – has been attempting to nudge the wheels into motion for close to 18 years with little success. That’s all changed now, thankfully, and Simon Winchester’s bestseller is finally bound for the silver screen.

Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games star Natalie Dormer has scored one of the female leads in The Professor and The Madman, a movie about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary that's being headlined by Mel Gibson and Sean Penn. THR has the breakdown of the story:
Gibson will play Professor James Murray, who in 1857 set about compiling the Oed, one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. Penn will play Dr. W.C. Minor, who submitted more than 10,000 entries but also was an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.Dormer will play a widow whose husband was killed by Penn and whose family he wants to help. A complicated romance ensues.
Complicated, indeed. Sounds bizarre, but that seems to fit pretty well with this whole movie, which seems like a really strange project to begin with.

Well, there's a headline I never thought I'd write.
The Hollywood Reporter says Mel Gibson is set to star in The Professor and The Madman, a film about — and this is not a joke — the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. Sean Penn is in negotiations to play a lead role opposite Gibson, while Apocalypto writer Farhad Safinia wrote the screenplay and will direct the movie, which "delves into madness, genius and two obsessive men who changed the course of literary history."

While it’s not surprising to learn that Mel Gibson’s secured the movie rights to a novel titled The Professor And The Madman: A Tale Of Murder, Insanity, And The Making Of The Oxford English Dictionary, it is a little odd that he didn’t call dibs on the latter role. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson’s upcoming adaptation of Simon Winchester’s bestselling novel will see him play Sir James Murray, a real-life lexicographer and philologist who served as the Oed’s primary editor for nearly 40 years. Winchester’s book delves into Murray’s work with on the dictionary, which saw him “crowdsource” for help on some of the entries.

With his directorial and acting career looking up, Mel Gibson is bringing a passion project that’s been stirring for two decades to the big screen. According to THR, Gibson has long since wanted to adapt the best-selling The Professor and the Madman, the story of the inception and creation of The Oxford English Dictionary. Gibson had originally planned to helm the project, but he has since yielded that hat to Farhad Safinia, who penned Gibson’s own Apocalypto, and is also the scribe for this adaptation.
With Gibson now focusing on acting (and producing) as James Murray, the titular professor who compiled the Oed, he has brought on Academy Award winner Sean Penn to play opposite as the madman, Dr. W.C. Minor. Penn’s character, who submitted over 10,000 entries to the Oed, was an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane. Should Penn accept — he’s currently...

Loretta Young films as TCM celebrates her 102nd birthday (photo: Loretta Young ca. 1935) Loretta Young would have turned 102 years old today. Turner Classic Movies is celebrating the birthday of the Salt Lake City-born, Academy Award-winning actress today, January 6, 2015, with no less than ten Loretta Young films, most of them released by Warner Bros. in the early '30s. Young, who began her film career in a bit part in the 1927 Colleen Moore star vehicle Her Wild Oat, remained a Warners contract player from the late '20s up until 1933. (See also: "Loretta Young Movies.") Now, ten Loretta Young films on one day may sound like a lot, but one should remember that most Warner Bros. -- in fact, most Hollywood -- releases of the late '20s and early '30s were either B Movies or programmers. The latter were relatively short (usually 60 to 75 minutes) feature films starring A (or B+) performers,...

I am slowly coming out of vacation mode and it's not easy. Christmas and New Year's need to happen on Thursday every year because it really makes taking time off very easy while still allowing time to do a little work here and there. My first press screening of 2015 is still yet to happen as there wasn't a screening of Woman in Black 2 scheduled and I have yet to receive an invite to see Taken 3. The first film I'm scheduled to see is Paddington on Saturday, but there's a little thing called a Seahawks game at the exact same time and I don't think Paddington will be interfering with that. With that, the first movie I actually watched in 2015 was Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot's Holiday as part of the Criterion Collection set I received for Christmas. It wasn't, however, the first film I watched this week as Tati's...

We are sadly months away from the June premiere of Season 2 of the Syfy original series Defiance. To tide us over, Syfy has released the first two of what are hopefully many “Jesse Does Defiance” featurettes with Jesse Rath (yes, Meaghan’s brother), who plays Alak Tarr on the show.

The entire Season 1 is available right now on your On Demand channel and here online.

Washington, December 10: American bourbon is better than Scottish whiskey, it has been revealed.
According to a UK publication, Jim Murray, an English writer and one of the world's top whiskey critics said that the Scottish malt is no match for American whiskey, the Washington Times reported.
The author of 'Jim Murray's Whisky Bible' believes that Scotland's decrease in quality whiskey is due to the use of sulphur candles to sanitize some barrels that have been used to age sherry, giving it a "bitter finish", while Bourbon is aged in virgin oak casks, which do not require sulphur treatment.
Murray added that Buffalo Trace, a bourbon distillery in Kentucky is "arguably the best distillery in the world". (Ani)...

The Midsomer Murders Christmas special will feature a surprise twist, as Dci Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman) discover that they are expecting a baby.
The new arrival was written into the ITV detective series when Dolman discovered she was pregnant. Her baby, Madeleine Charlotte, was born in July.
"I didn't think I'd ever have a child so I feel very blessed," said the single mum. "I am very happy to bring up the baby on my own as I have incredible support and love from my family.
"Things might not be perfect but from the moment I held Madeleine in my arms we felt like a team. I've got so much love around me, so I know we're going to be all right.
"Everyone on Midsomer Murders has been so supportive and lovely. I went back in October to film the fifth episode and Neil was very excited for me.

Apple's products have topped a list of 'unwanted' Christmas gifts. According to research from Experian Marketing Services (via The Daily Telegraph), the firm had the most searched-for online returns policy on Christmas Day. However, confusion over Apple's similarly-named products is believed to be responsible for the findings. "Sadly not everyone gets exactly what they want at Christmas, and so Christmas Day and Boxing Day are key days when consumers go online to spend Christmas money or organise returns for unwanted gifts," said James Murray, digital marketing manager for Experian Marketing Services. "Interestingly Apple was the most searched-for returns policy on Christmas Day this year, (more)...

London, Oct 9: Scotch whisky's finest malts are being ruined by the smell of rotten eggs, an expert has suggested.
Respected whisky writer Jim Murray claimed that sulphur being used to kill off bacteria in wooden casks is tarnishing the Scotland's world famous brand.
The barrels are used by distillers to "age" their product and mature its taste.
Murray is calling on distillery chiefs to "weed out" the imported.

Back in July, I reported that Isaiah Washington would be co-starring and playing multiple roles in the new play Unspeakable, a "dramatic fantasia" on the life and a career of comedy legend Richard Pyror. The play, which was co-written by James Murray Jackson Jr., who also plays Pryor, was scheduled for an 8-week run at the Royal George Theater in Chicago, starting on October 2. Well, that was then, and this is now. This morning it was announced that the play would not open next month as planned, but would be postponed until Spring 2013. According to PR reps for the production "major funding that did not come through" for the stage play in turn forced...

Isaiah Washington will be co-starring and playing multiple roles in the play Unspeakable, which is described a "dramatic fantasia" on the life and career of comedy icon Richard Pryor, in a new production of the play in Chicago, for a limited 8-week engagement at the Royal George Theater, starting on October 2. The 2005 play was first performed at the New York International Fringe Festival with co-writer James Murray Jackson Jr., who played the role of Pryor, and who will be reprising the role for this new Chicago production. The play will be directed by Rod Gailes, who co-wrote the play with Jackson. This, however, will not be Washington's first experience...

In a few short weeks, the broadcast networks will storm Madison Avenue with a whole new crop of shows that will either have the power to blow the roof off Nielsen — or give cable another opportunity to crow about their greatness. NBC's new sci-fi pilot Beautiful People resembles Blade Runner, according to star Megalyn Echikunwoke. The drama is set in a future world in which humans co-exist with life-like androids, known as 'Mechanicals'. "It's the same themes as Blade Runner or [2001 film] A.I., or any of those futuristic, robots-in-the-future type themes," Echikunwoke told Collider. "That story has been told before. What's different about this is the way it's written and the execution. That's what's really going to hook people." The actress plays the boss of attorney Gregory (James Murray) in the pilot, which has been written by Cougar Town's (more)...

Jean Dujardin Actor Jean Dujardin won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for his performance as a fading silent-film star in Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist. In the above photo, Dujardin — who also won the Best Actor Award for The Artist in Cannes last year — poses backstage in the press room with his Golden Globe at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA, on Sunday, January 15. In many ways, The Artist borrows elements from George Cukor's What Price Glory?, in which Constance Bennett plays a rising star and Lowell Sherman a troubled producer, and the first two A Star Is Born movies, the first directed by William A. Wellman, and starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March; the second directed by Cukor, and starring Judy Garland and James Mason. All three movies, in turn, were inspired by real-life...

Scientists have figured out that the way to keep Venice from sinking is to pump in more water. Specifically, they need to reverse the process of pumping out the groundwater in the marsh, because that was what was holding the clay up. It did seem like a good idea 100 years ago.

Just in case you haven't watched enough television that explores humanity through the eyes of a robot, get ready for "Beautiful People." The NBC-commissioned pilot, set in the near future where humans and robots exist the same way races of people did in the 1960s, has cast its first two regulars. James Murray and Patrick Heusinger are on board, with Murray playing an attorney who believes in android civil rights while Heusinger plays a robot suddenly plagued with emotions. The writer is coming from the most unlikely of sources. Michael McDonald wrote the script for this pilot a decade ago -- during his long stint as a cast member of Fox's "MadTV." There he played popular characters like Stuart Larkin and Marvin Tikvah, and would stay on the show for more than 200 episodes. Yet, he also ...

Analytics firm Experian Hitwise's latest figures confirm that the Specific Media service is now less popular than Stumble Upon and Moshi Monsters in the territory.
