If you know anything about the independent film world, it won’t be surprising to discover the project writer/director Justin McConnell is hoping to get off the ground at the start of Clapboard Jungle isn’t going to be much further along in its pre-production process four years later. That’s the nature of the beast. You’re going to have moments of elation when it appears that funds have come through and the inevitable spiral downward when those plans evaporate. You’re going to hit your head against a wall to draw blood from that stone until you realize stagnation isn’t doing anyone any favors when you have other ideas that may bear fruit quicker. Guess what, though? The next one probably won’t get made before the end of this journey either.

From Anchor Bay Entertainment, Sneak Peek the Starz Original Filmmaking Experiment, "The Chair", a followup to Project Greenlight', available on a 5-disc DVD Set, containing all 10 episodes and 2 feature films, February 17, 2015:
"...'The Chair' charts the path of two directors through the process of bringing their first feature to the screen - each armed with the same script. The series documents - with an unflinching eye - the creation, marketing and theatrical release of the two adaptations. Both directors are given the same budget, and both versions use locations in the same city. Through online voting, the audience determines which director will be awarded $250,000.
"The screenplay itself is a coming-of-age feature length comedy that chronicles the first homecoming on Thanksgiving weekend by a handful of college freshman who are fumbling towards adulthood, written by Dan Schoffer.

Objectively, subjectively, and critically, “Hollidaysburg” is the better film and deserving winner of “The Chair.” Read on. And bear with me. I'm not a man of few words. I'm working on that. My producing partners Zachary Quinto, Corey Moosa, and I produce a documentary television series for Starz called “The Chair,” created by Chris Moore. Two directors were given the same script, the same budget, and the same city, and each had to go make a feature film. Every other decision was theirs, including “final cut.” The show wraps up in two more episodes and has been compelling. The two.

Facebook’s Oculus Rift is getting its first 3D virtual reality feature film in Banshee Chapter, an indie sci-fi horror executive produced by Star Trek‘s Zachary Quinto that’s hitting the next-gen virtual reality platform today – for free.
The low budget frightener, loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft’s From Beyond, tracks a journalist investigating the disappearance of her old college friend and his ties to a secret experimental drug. Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Levine, Sleepy Hollow‘s Katia Winter and True Blood‘s Michael McMillian star for first time director Blair Erickson in the film produced by Sunchaser Entertainment’s Stephanie Riggs and Before the Door’s Corey Moosa and Sean Akers, and Christian Arnold-Beutel.
Banshee Chapter debuted last December on VOD to modest fanfare. But that was before Facebook bought Oculus Rift in a $2 billion deal, heralding it as the next big thing in social communications and entertainment.

As the most expensive art form, it’s difficult to experiment with filmmaking in the way that the new Starz show The Chair does. Produced by Zachary Quinto, Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa, the program obsessively watches as two aspiring filmmakers turn the same script into different films. The closest cousin to this kind of semi-scientific meddling might be Michael Haneke remaking his own Funny Games. Or maybe Lars von Trier forcing Jorgen Leth to remake one of his short films in The Five Obstructions. Or maybe we can consider this as another in a long list of remakes that just so happens to take place simultaneously so that we can’t say which film is the “original.” Maybe I’m overthinking this (I am), but it’s exciting. Tinkering and deconstructing cinema is almost always fun, or at the very least interesting, for the audience — especially when the filmmakers themselves look to be losing their minds...

Not only is the idea behind Starz new effort, The Chair, one that makes for a rough road as a show, it’s one that has only a theoretical draw insofar as gaining an audience, and who the target demographic might be. The show will follow two hopeful directors as they each make their own version of a film based on the same script.
Zachary Quinto, and several others, will serve as mentors during the process, which will provide some draw, but as these directors take us through the process of creating a coming-of-age film, does anyone actually want to be a part of that? Sure, the idea sounds good, but it’s hard to tell what the show really looks like, and whether or not watching the behind-the-scenes effort of… who knows what, is really going to draw a crowd.
I guess we’ll find out.
One Screenplay. Two Films.

Whether it's successfully picking up the baton of an iconic genre role or establishing a character as a classic out of the gate, an actor can never predict if they'll become a genre superstar. This week Bam! Pow! Zap! has not one but two performers who've achieved both feats: Zachary Quinto (the new Spock in Star Trek and Sylar in Heroes) and Ralph Fiennes (the new M in the 007 films and Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies). Even more impressive: they're both expanding their talents offscreen as well. Zachary Quinto: A Star's Trek Behind the Scenes "We have a little joke at Before the Door," says actor-producer Zachary Quinto of the special skills each partner at his increasingly busy Hollywood production company. Over the past few years, Zachary Quinto has established his acting rep by playing Sylar in Heroes, a couple of memorable roles on American Horror Story, and, of course, Spock in the last two Star Trek movies. So you could describe his transition into producing as, well, “logical.” Certainly it has gotten off to an encouraging start. Quinto produced director J.C. Chandor’s financial crisis movie Margin Call through the actor’s Before the Door company — the production outfit he runs with partners Corey Moosa and Neal Dodson — and exec produced Chandor’s Robert Redford-starring All Is Lost, which just screened at Cannes.

Here is a first look at Robert Redford battling the elements in All Is Lost, the film scripted and directed J.C. Chandor, who helmed the financial crisis thriller Margin Call.Chandor met Redford at the Sundance Film Festival, and was so taken by the indie film patriarch that he wrote a project specifically for him. And Redford, who can be elusive in committing, stepped up and put himself through quite an ordeal. Deadline was first to reveal this unusual project, which has just wrapped principal photography at Baja Studios in Rosarito, Mexico. It’s a man vs. nature drama, and it’s all Redford, all the time, as he goes Jeremiah Johnson after getting lost at sea and struggling against the elements to stay alive. From the look of the photo, they put that giant water tank at Baja Studios to good use. Before The Door Pictures’ Neal Dodson and...

The awards season train continues for "The Artist," and while in years past the Spirit Awards have tended to honor edgier or more decidedly independent fare, this year it looks like even they have the fever for the silent movie sensation. Taking home the big prizes for Best Picture, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) it looks like the stage has been set for the film to repeat these honors, and maybe more, tomorrow night at the venue formerly known as the Kodak Theater.
