Disney+ has set a May 31, 2024 premiere date for Jim Henson Idea Man, a documentary directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). “If there was going to be a definitive documentary about Jim Henson, we had hoped it would be in the hands of an accomplished filmmaker. “It was sort of anarchy on the outside, but underneath it, there was always a smart idea—a witty point to make, an observation about the world,” said Howard while discussing his impression of Jim Henson’s life with Vanity Fair. “To see that evolve through the medium of puppetry and television, and then on into movies, was so interesting to me. Documentaries are part of the foundational understanding we gather and build about our world. They help us to better comprehend recent or historical events, and bring new clarity to topics we thought we knew inside and out. It seems as though this is the goal in mind for "Harry & Meghan," the new Netflix series that will see the former royals telling their own story of their marriage and the trials they subsequently dealt with through the royal family as a result.
The sneak peek, which debuted on Thursday, December 1, mostly shows us black-and-white photos of the couple seemingly falling and being in love. We see them through different strides in their relationship, but finally, color comes into the picture to represent the now in footage shot specifically for the series. "When the stakes are this high, does it make more sense to hear our story from us?" Meghan asks in closing as the trailer concludes.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ready to share their side of the story.
The royal family members relinquished their Royal Highness titles in January 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California. Prince Harry infamously told Oprah during a CBS interview that the reason they parted ways with the senior royal family roles stemmed in part from the experience with his mother, Princess Diana.
“I asked for calm from the British tabloids,” the Duke of Sussex said (via Marie Claire). “Once as a boyfriend, once as a husband, and once as a father…My father and brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave.”
Now, Harry is welcoming the cameras on his and wife Meghan’s terms. A Netflix docuseries, produced in association with their production company Archewell Productions, is coming soon to the streamer.

So, what do the 4th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place Feb. 18, 1952, have in common with the 2022 edition?
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The stars of the No. 1 TV series, CBS’ “I Love Lucy,” were the hosts of the Emmy ceremony, which was telecast in Los Angeles on Kcea, now known as Kabc. And it was the first time that the Emmys embraced national television networks. Previously, nominations and awards were bestowed on projects that were produced or aired in Los Angeles.
This year, Amy Poehler’s valentine of a film, “Lucy and Desi,” not only received strong reviews but six Emmy nominations including Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and directing for Poehler. The Amazon Prime doc won two: writer Mark Monroe and composer David Schwartz.
Traveling back to the 1952, the ceremony took places at venerable nightclub, the Cocoanut Grove. It must have been a short show because only seven awards were handed out.

Mark Monroe, writer-producer of the Emmy-nominated documentary Lucy and Desi, calls Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz “the most powerful couple probably Hollywood has ever seen.”
Not only did the pair found Desilu Studios, a major independent production company, but they created one of the most beloved TV programs of all time with I Love Lucy. That show introduced all sorts of innovations that remain industry standards today, including the practice of taping sitcoms before a live audience, shooting with multiple cameras, syndication, and re-runs.

You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.
We are predicting that “The Power of the Dog” will win Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars with “The Lost Daughter” running a close second. Their three likeliest Oscar competitors — “Coda,” “Dune” and “West Side Story” — contend at the WGA Awards as do “Nightmare Alley” and “tick, tick … Boom!”
The Original Screenplay Oscar frontrunner “Licorice Pizza” is in the running here as are three of its likeliest rivals: “Being the Ricardos,” “Don’t Look Up” and “King Richard.” With second-place Oscar hopeful “Belfast” ineligible at the guild kudos that race is rounded out by “The French Dispatch.

In early 2019, Casey Neistat began filming “Under the Influence,” about 23-year-old YouTube phenomenon David Dobrik, capturing his evolution from prankster to online celebrity with major brand sponsors and tens of millions of followers across social media platforms. But in 2021, the docu took a turn when a Business Insider story documented sexual-assault allegations by a woman against a former member of Dobrik’s Vlog Squad, Dom Zeglaitis. When the article went viral, Dobrik’s world began to collapse around him and Neistat was there to capture it. The result is a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it feature docu that sheds light on the social media’s ecosystem and the personalities it perpetuates.
Neistat teamed with Killer Films and documentary writer-producer Mark Monroe to make “Under the Influence,” which is bound to cause more controversy for Dobrik after premiering at South by Southwest on March 12. Neistat and Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon spoke to Variety...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on February 17th, reviewing “Lucy and Desi,” a new documentary that made its debut at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video beginning March 4th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The power couple is an endlessly fascinating story, given Lucille Ball’s roots in Depression poverty and Desi Arnaz as an expatriate from Cuba. They met improbably as B-level Hollywood actors, falling in true love and then building an entertainment empire, called Desilu, all based on the groundbreaking “I Love Lucy” TV series … they even eventually bought the same studio lot (Rko) they used to work at. Comic actor Amy Poehler, in her director debut, explores some unexpected paths along the way for the famous couple.
“Lucy and Desi” is streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting March 4th. Written by Mark Monroe. Directed by Amy Poehler.

Before we get to parsing the list of Writers Guild nominations, let’s look at those who were ineligible. This year’s list is massive, from UK entries Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” (Focus Features), Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” (Netflix), and Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” (MGM/UA) to Netflix contenders from Jane Campion (”The Power of the Dog”) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”). Among last year’s ineligibles were 2021 Oscar nominees “Nomadland” and “Minari.”
The WGA maintains jurisdiction over whether scripts are produced under a Writer’s Guild contract, and who finally gets credit on a screenplay. The guild insists on withholding non-signatories from being part of the WGA Awards.
A WGA nomination isn’t essential for Oscar nomination. Exceptions include American indie “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Iranian Oscar-winner “A Separation” Oscar-winning British films “Les Miserables,” and “The Favourite,” and all Pixar animated contenders, from “Up” to “Incredibles 2.” European...
