Focusing on the aftermath of the failed student revolution of the 1968-69, “Lost Lovers” seems to highlight their defeat by evoking the concepts of former glory and current demise, in a rather unusual road movie which is also filled with (absurd) eroticism.
The protagonist here is Takeru, a former pole vaulting champion, who roams the streets aimlessly, trying to rob people to make a living, while occasionally performing with a band or trying to gather audience to hear his speeches, with all of his endeavors usually resulting in failure. During his “travels” he stumbles upon a young couple who turn out to be deaf-mute, as they perform in a supermarket, and decides to follow them, even though initially the man beats him. Their common trip throughout Honshu brings them into various locations, including the beach and an abandoned military warehouse of sorts. The companionship of the couple, and the whole...

While cinephiles mostly associate Kazuo Hara with documentaries such as “The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On”, the director has also made a feature film in 2005, together with his long-term partner producer and screenwriter Sachiko Kobayashi. However, “The Many Faces of Chika”, which follows the story of a woman through four stages in her life, contains similar qualities, especially a sharp eye for human relationships and flaws, along with a critical view on Japan’s society and politics. Given the background of the tumultuous 1960s, with a specific allusion to the student protests, “The Many Faces of Chika” tells a story of a women’s journey into uncertainty and her many facets, which mirror the social and political changes of the times.

Michihito Fujii has directed a film – sometimes two, and sometimes even three – a year almost every year since he first came on to the scene in 2012 with his debut “Where Is The Better Future Of A Fake Town”. His 2020 semi-fantasy coming of age film “The Brightest Roof In The Universe” (based on the novel “Uchu De Ichiban Akarui Yane” by Tomoso Nonaka) is attempting to make its own wave at this year’s Toronto Japanese Film Festival. Clearly as prolific a director as they come, you’d think that the quantity of Fujii’s output might hinder their quality. However, if this sweet tale about an endearingly awkward teen navigating love and past trauma with the help of a mysterious scooter-riding granny is any indication, then Fujii, and us, have nothing to worry about.

Your favorite thing about Berlin?
Currywurst at Imbiss between meetings and screenings.
What’s the one item you always take with you to Berlin?
Lots of instant heat pads from Japan. I can use them, give them away to friends and empty my suitcase at the same time.
Where do the Japanese like to hang out in Berlin?
Cocolo Ramenbar. I went there once with Japanese actress Kaori Momoi after our official screening late at night. The ramen soup warmed us up after a long day of interviews and official events.

Scarlett Johansson stars in the cyberpunk anime adaptation, Ghost In The Shell. Here's our review...
Think about some of the techno-thrillers that emerged in the mid-90s: Sandra Bullock vehicle The Net, say, or Michael Douglas-Demi Moore harassment-in-the-workplace Vr opus, Disclosure. Watch them now, and they look almost painfully quaint.
Now take a look at Ghost In The Shell, director Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga; 22 years on, and it’s barely aged a day. It imagines a future where human and machine have long since fused; typists can have their hands replaced with ten-fingered robot limbs capable of banging out 1,000 words per second. Minds can be augmented for faster learning; eyes can be replaced with more powerful optical sensors. Yet in this future Tokyo, where humanity is on the cusp of leaving its body for a life in cyberspace, there’s a growing sense...

Last year, the casting of Scarlett Johansson to play the lead in “Ghost in the Shell,” a live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese anime series centered around Major Motoko Kusanagi, was met with controversy and backlash. Hiring a white actress to play a Japanese character seemed to critics and fans of Masamune Shirow’s iconic franchise like another case of whitewashing.
Now the actress in the center of the controversy has once more addressed the issue. “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person,” said Johansson in a recent interview with Marie Claire. “Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.”

In the past few months we’ve had a number of small teases for the new live action adaptation of Masamune Shirow‘s Ghost in the Shell. This new tease doesn’t offer us much except a curiously unsettling look behind the eyes of the film’s protagonist – The Major, played in this version of the story by Scarlett Johansson.

Above you'll find a new photo featuring Scarlett Johansson as The Major in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. I've really enjoyed everything that I've seen from this film so far, and it looks a lot better than I expected it to be. It looks like it there's a chance that could be just as badass as the anime films that have been made.
When talking to Empire about taking on the role of the Major and the film itself, Johansson tells them:
"I've been a person without a body, now I'm a mind in a synthetic body. Eventually I'll go back to playing a body and brain together. This is a ride that's not just explosive and exciting, but also curious and reflective"
Director Rupert Sanders adds a bold statement that could come back and bite him in the ass if the movie ends up being crap.

I was really hoping that this movie would turn out to be great, and judging from this trailer, there's a good chance that fans are going to get a hell of an incredible film. Director Rupert Sanders has done an insane job with the visuals, and from what it looks like, the script is solid as well.
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

Ghost in the Shell began as a Japanese manga before it was adapted into an anime film, and some fans have criticized the live action reimagining for whitewashing a role that could have gone to an Asian actor.
"I think whenever you cast someone, someone's going to be critical of it. To me, I stand by my decision," he told the crowd of fans. "She's the best actress of her generation, and I was flattered and honored that she would be in this film."

Steeped in a particularly potent brand of cyberpunk, as promised, the first full trailer for Ghost in the Shell has debuted online, welcoming Scarlett Johansson in the kick-ass role of Major Motoko Kusanagi – or The Major, for short.
An insightful featurette notwithstanding, this is our first extended look at Rupert Sanders’ manga adaptation in action, after Paramount opted for a non-traditional rollout of hypnotic teasers that showcased the overcrowded dystopia of Ghost in the Shell – cyborg criminals and rampant extremists included – and little else.
That all changes with today’s grand and stunning reveal though, which comes packing some gorgeous visuals, impressive production design, a definite Blade Runner vibe and poetic action sequences that have our jaws on the floor. All in all, it’s a truly exciting look at what might just be one of next year’s most explosive films.

A new featurette has been released for Scarlett Johansson's live-action film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. The featurette focuses on the director of the original anime films, Mamoru Oshii, as he visits the set of the film to check out how things are coming along. He seems to be really happy and excited about what they are doing. The featurette also includes some pretty awesome new footage from the set that you've gotta check out!

Though Hollywood currently has several magna adaptations in the works, Alita: Battle Angel, Adam Wingard’s Death Note and the long-rumored Akira reboot, to name but a few, it’s Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell that seemingly has people most excited. With Scarlett Johansson’s name on the masthead, it’s easy to see why that is, and though the marketing campaign for the film has yet to kick into high gear, the cogs are definitely starting to turn.
Earlier this week, we caught a peek of Johansson in action as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the stylish first teaser, where the actress’ elite cyborg heroine delivered a sucker punch to an unsuspecting thug. The Hollywood adaptation of the sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell will hit theatres on March 31, 2017. Executive producer Michael Costigan says that the upcoming live-action will be faithful to the manga. Although, producer Avi Arad says that they will pick and choose what elements they’ll include from the source manga or the previous TV and film adaptations.
In an interview for Collider.com, Arad sheds light on the movie’s plot:
“It involves Kuze. The Kuze story. The big thing we are doing here is that we’re not necessarily doing an origins backstory, but we are addressing her sense of self and resolving how she defines herself in terms of memories. That’s one of the main thrusts in the story. Inspired by that episode of Affection in Second Gig. It’s bits and pieces of those mixed together.”

With Scarlett Johansson’s name on the masthead, Ghost in the Shell is perhaps the most buzzworthy of Hollywood’s in-development manga adaptations. It’s also much further along than Alita: Battle Angel, Adam Wingard’s Death Note and the long-rumored Akira reboot, with a release date already pinned down for late March.
Cries of whitewashing notwithstanding, that means there’s a hushed excitement swirling around the Rupert Sanders-directed feature, not least because it’ll have Johansson flaunting her action skills once more as Major Motoko Kusanagi, an elite cyborg who spearheads a military team known as Section 9. With an international ensemble in tow, Sanders has pulled together all the necessary ingredients for a crowd-pleasing actioner – on paper, at least – but while chatting to Collider, Scarlett Johansson dove a little deeper to discuss the director’s world-building process.

Breaking course from marketing protocol, which would so often dictate that a studio must present a teaser trailer – possibly even a teasing teaser – as a primer ahead of the full reveal, Paramount Pictures has today launched five hypnotic snippets for Ghost in the Shell, and each is as surreal and perplexing as the next.
Clocking in at around 10-to-15 seconds in length, the quintet arrives bearing the titles Aramaki, Silhouette, Unplug, What and finally, the very slick Geisha Hallway. Each vignette is, as one would expect for a tentpole manga adaptation, dripping with Cyberpunk goodness, from dystopian cityscapes to shots of cyborgs wired into some form of computer mainframe. Confounding stuff, but surely these teasers are paving the way for a trailer reveal?
Either way, Scarlett Johansson is at the center of Paramount’s live-action blockbuster as Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who headlines an elite military team known as...

Some intriguing new details have surfaced regarding Major Motoko Kusanagi's mother in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, and it just might offer some insight into Scarlett Johansson's white character in the film.

If you've been anywhere near a computer or a smart device in the last few years, you've heard about the hot button issue that is "Hollywood Whitewashing." It's been a buzzing trend a lot lately, and the latest project to draw the ire of the people who care about that sort of thing is Ghost In The Shell. With Ghost in the Shell now deep into production, those initial reports of whitewashing are starting to rear their ugly head again. It’s an understandable concern, and one that we’re not totally dismissing, but Scarlett Johansson is a tremendous talent and we’re still excited to see her in the role.
Plus, let’s not judge a book by its cover. From everything we’ve heard so far, the filmmakers understand what’s at stake here and as of right now, it sounds like they’re intent on pleasing fans of the beloved series in any way that they can.

Scarlett Johansson may be the highest-grossing actress of all time, but the decision to enlist the Avengers star for Ghost in the Shell caused quite the stir back in April.
That’s because Masamune Shirow’s beloved manga series is viewed as a decidedly Japanese story, leading many to decree that the addition of Johansson was nothing more than whitewashing on Paramount’s part. According to producer Steven Paul, that’s simply not the case, as Ghost in the Shell boasts a “very international story.”

With the white-washing accusations still continuing, and among rumours that the producers are using special effects to make Scarlet Johansson look more oriental, another Asian has been cast in the film. Rila Fukushima, who was a name on the lists about Japanese actresses who could have starred instead of Scarlett Johansson is now actually a member of the cast, although the character she is going to play has not been announced yet.
Fukushima, who was chosen as one of the woman of the year 2013 by Vogue Japan, started her career as a model, before she jumped to cinema, playing Yukio in “The Wolverine”, Katana on the TV show “Arrow” and javing a small parts as Red Priestess in Volantins in “Game of Thrones.”
As of now, the cast includes, apart from Scarlet Johansson, Michael Pitt as villain The Laughing Man, Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr.
