It’s been a big week for controversies. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from their gigs on the set of the new Han Solo movie, leading to questions about whether the new film — now being directed by Ron Howard — will satisfy audiences. Meanwhile, Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” was criticized for ignoring issues of race in a movie set during the Civil War. Just how much can this sort of backlash hurt a new movie in the marketplace?
That’s the starting point for this week’s Screen Talk, in which Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson also talk about the challenges facing a new documentary and why “The Big Sick” could be an Oscar season player.

It’s been less than a year since the last Star Wars Celebration unleashed itself upon London, but the semi-annual event is now poised to descend on Orlando for four more days of wall-to-wall “Star Wars” action and announcements. This year’s event will likely be even more celebratory than usual, focused on the 40th anniversary of the release of “Star Wars: A New Hope” and the ever-expanding franchise, now kitted out with a brand new trilogy and the promise of still more anthology films.
For fans of the saga, Celebration consistently provides a ton of news (from trailers and other footage to casting announcements and teases about new projects to come) and serves as a harbinger of things to come for a franchise still going through major changes. Ahead, we scope out five big ways that Celebration will impact both the “Star Wars” franchise and its very dedicated fanbase.

The Star Wars franchise certainly seems to be making some real bold decisions as of late. Rogue One saw the elimination of the text crawl (not to mention the inclusion of time jumps, and a few other narrative quirks) and the inclusion of bigger-than-normal celebrities such as Forest Whitaker, Felicity Jones, and Donnie Yen. Of course, Rogue One was only the beginning, and we were bound to see some other big changes and even bigger names as we worked our way through the ever-growing galaxy far, far away.
About a week ago, we reported a rumor from Variety that the script for the upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie calls for a mentor character — an Og scoundrel, if you will. And the man rumored to take on the role of said Og scoundrel? Woody Harrelson.

Sony has announced the title for the upcoming sequel to 21 and 22 Jump Street during this year's CinemaCon presentation and it looks like an alien fighting crossover is indeed what we have to look forward too.
With the incredible success that the 2 Jump Street films have had, it only makes sense that the franchise continues. The question was always weather or not the post credits in 22 Jump Street were really what we had to look forward too.
The Sony Hacks lead us to believe that the faith they had in Jump Street franchise was going to lead them to jump start a new Men In Black film. Most of us laughed the idea off thinking there was no way we would see a 4th MiB crossover with Jump Street. After Sony's presentation at Cinema Con however, we learned that not only is 23 Jump Street coming, but we officially have a title,...

Obviously the Spider-Man reboot wasn’t the only upcoming production that nabbed a title at the Sony Pictures presentation during CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The long-talked-about Men in Black and Jump Street crossover was another winner that received its official name: Mib 23. So plans are moving forward.
Information about the movie was first leaked in 2014 after the massive Sony hack. The leaked emails revealed that Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill would return for another Jump Street film, but this time with a Men in Black flavor. However, Mib stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won’t reprise their roles in the crossover and we won’t get to see Agent Jay and Agent Kay.
On top of finally getting a title (and proof that the film is actually happening), Mib 23 showed off with a logo as well.
Mib 23 will be the crossover between 21 Jump Street and the Men in Black movies!

Here come the Men in Black – and they’ve brought Jenko and Schmidt along with them for the ride.
During Sony’s panel at the ongoing CinemaCon event, the studio’s planned Jump Street/Men in Black crossover was given an official title: MIB 23. An official logo was also showcased during the event – you can find it below, courtesy of ComicBook – though no further details were disclosed at the time of writing.

Last we reported on Sony’s franchise crossover, both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were attached to reprise their roles as the bumbling undercover cops, with James Bobin (The Muppets, Alice Through the Looking Glass) primed to take up the reins from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, themselves busy with Disney’s Han Solo origins movie. Having helped fire the Jump Street series into an international success, though, Lord and Miller remain involved as creative consultants.

What was once a harebrained lark of an idea is now an actual movie: yes, the franchise crossover of "21 Jump Street" and "Men In Black" is real and happening. And now it has a title. While their "Spider-Man: Homecoming" news hogged the spotlight, Sony had more to share about their upcoming slate, including the name of that aforementioned mashup: "MIB 23." James Bobin ("The Muppets," "Alice Through The Looking Glass") will direct the movie, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller still keeping their hands in the mix as producers. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will be back to reprise their roles, with production slated to kick off in June, but the connection to the "Men In Black" series seems to be in name only, with younger actors stepping in for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I'm still not sold on that concept, but then again, no one really figured "21 Jump Street" would turn out.

Of all the leaks to come out of the Sony E-Mail hacks, probably the strangest one was the idea that the highly anticipated 23 Jump Street would feature characters from Men in Black to create one of the most unlikely crossover movies to date. Well, it looks like it is a pipe dream no more, with Variety reporting that not only is the project moving forward, but The Muppets director James Bobin has been tasked with helming Schmidt and Jenko’s meeting with the elusive group of alien hunters, seeing as Phil Lord and Chris Miller are busy with Star Wars’ Han Solo spin-off movie. You may have heard of it. While it would have been preferable to have them direct this no doubt crazy mash-up, Bobin’s work on The Muppets, Da Ali G Show, and Flight of the Conchords does give some serious comedy chops. While Jonah Hill and...

James Bobin, who’s helmed The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, and the incoming Alice Through The Looking Glass, is set to take the job on. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are already in talks too to reprise the roles that took in the two Jump Street movies to date.
On the Men In Black side, it looks like there’s going to be fresh casting. Neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones will be appearing in the thus-far unnamed film, and it’s likely that two less famous and...

The 22 Jump Street end credits accounted for almost every direction the series could take for a third movie. Almost. Following the 2014 Sony email hack, it was revealed that the studio was considering joining the Jump Street franchise with Men in Black, a crossover that almost no one saw coming. Now over a year after the initial information leaked, Sony is officially moving forward with this crossover movie under new creative leadership. Although Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the first two Jump Street movies, they’re unable to return for this one, due to their commitment to the Star Wars Han Solo spinoff. Instead, Variety has heard that The Muppets director James Bobin is in talks to helm the Jump Street / Men in Black action comedy. While it hasn’t been officially green-lit yet, the studio is looking at starting production by June. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum ...

Man, it's a good day to be Rodney Rothman. I wrote this morning about his upcoming directorial debut, a still-untitled science-fiction/horror comedy that he wrote as well, and now comes news that Sony is pleased with his script for the also-untitled 23 Jump Street/Men In Black crossover, so pleased that the studio is evidently close to hiring James Bobin to direct so they can get things started. James Bobin did lovely work on The Muppets, his bigscreen debut, but the reason I remain excited about what choices he makes as a filmmaker is because of his work on Flight Of The Conchords. That was a very tricky tone to master, and I think whimsy can be horrifying in the wrong hands, but Bobin has this very sweet and silly nature that comes through in his work. I wish I could be excited about his next film, Alice Through The Looking Glass,...

Back in 2014 we learned that Sony Pictures was planning to develop a crossover film that would combine the world of Men in Black with the 21 Jump Street franchise. Back in 2014, when Sony was hacked and their emails were released and flying around the web, one item that surfaced was the possibility of a "23 Jump Street" sequel that would crossover with "Men In Black." Jonah Hill emailed Amy Pascal, the Sony honcho at the time, saying the concept was "rad and powerful.” Frankly, it seemed like a neat brainstorming idea, but the movie kept popping up. "Star Wars The Force Awakens" debuts in theaters in a few weeks, but Disney is already hard at work casting a young Hal Solo for their 2018 Solo prequel spinoff film. When Disney first announced they would be releasing one "Star Wars" film per year until 2020, fans wondered exactly what that would entail. Earlier this year the studio shared their plans, which included "Episode VII", "Episode VIII", "Episode IX", and three spinoff prequels that focused on the stolen death star plans in "Rogue One", Han Solo, and Boba Fett. While the Han Solo prequel spinoff doesn't have a title yet, it does have a production team, which includes screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that, according to their sources, Lord and Miller's casting director, Jeanne McCarthy ("American Crime Story", "The Mindy Project", "21 Jump Street"), has seen over 2,500 actors to play the young Han Solo.

The site did not mention what role Depp, who starred as Officer Tom Hansen on the TV version, will play. Meanwhile, it was reported that the movie is currently in production, to meet the scheduled March 16, 2012 U.S. release date.
Depp shot to fame after he starred on "21 Jump Street" TV series. He has since landed roles in big movies such as Disney remake of "Alice in Wonderland", in which he stars as Mad Hatter. He will next be seen on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides".
Based on Fox's TV series, which was aired in 1987-1991, "21 Jump Street" tells a tale of a group...

Apparently, today is great casting/directing sweepstakes update day and lo and behold, we have another piping hot update on a new batch of casting rumors regarding the impending 3-D reboot of Spider Man and the all important role of Spidey’s gal pal.
EW’s Hollywood Insider column reports that there are two female leads in the remake and Sony would like to have the delightful Emma Stone and rising indie darling Mia Wasikowska in the respective roles. Since Stone’s a red head and Wasikowska is a blonde, that one will play Mary Jane and the other will play Gwen Stacy.
Stone and Wasikowska are two of the best young actresses working, but it seems like with the direction that their respective careers are taking, they do not need to star in a big blockbuster. Sure, it makes sense, financially to star in a potential franchise because money...

Depp and Paradis to Star in American Lover
Bang Showbiz is reporting that Johnny Depp and girlfriend Vanessa Paradis will both star in the film My American Lover.
“It’s in preparation. It’s called My American Lover. Vanessa plays the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir and I play her lover Nelson Algren who is real macho.”
The Playlist has a few more details on the film, which will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom. The site speculated that the earliest the film would shoot would be spring 2011. I believe and will stand corrected if not so, that this is the first time the real life couple will appear in a movie together as co-stars.
Amber Heard Will Drive Angry
Amber Heard has joined Nicolas Cage in the Patrick Lussier-directed 3D action movie, Drive Angry, a seemingly over the top take on Edge of Darkness and Taken.

I couldn’t think of anyone better to do the first “official” documentary on the life of Keith Richards than Johnny Depp. As a lifelong ‘Stones fan, much like Depp, Richard’s life is so intriguing to me. The founding member and co-writer of all the major hits, has had a unique life. One filled with some very interesting tales ranging from how he got into music, his drug abuse to the Rolling Stones being exiled in Paris after tax problems created by a scrupulous manager.
There is so much to tackle in Richards 40+ years as one of the front men of possibly the greatest Rock n ‘Roll band ever. Variety confirms the story which was reported earlier by a Serbian magazine. They say that Depp would begin work on the documentary next week. Depp and Richards have been friends for over a decade leading to Richards appearance in Pirates...
