Anyone looking to debate the limits of progress should cast an eye on 1980s Ireland. As a generation born in revolution and civil war moved from farms to towns, a middle class emerged. Some people had televisions; if they were good, some of their kids had Levi’s jeans. As certain things loosened, the Catholic church’s grip on most aspects of Irish life seemed to only grow tighter. Between 1922 and 1996, and aided by a callow state, the church was responsible for imprisoning tens of thousands of women (mostly young single mothers who couldn’t afford the child) into what was essentially indentured servitude. In these “laundries,” women worked seven days a week and weren’t allowed to leave. Their babies were taken from them and sold for adoption, or worse. Around 1,600 women died. The number of babies is estimated to be in the thousands.

Unlike Peter Mullan’s searing 2008 Venice Golden Lion winner, The Magdalene Sisters, or Joni Mitchell’s piercingly sad ballad, “The Magdalene Laundries,” the name given to the notorious workhouse institutions controlled by Irish religious orders is never spoken in Small Things Like These. But its Biblical evocation of the “fallen woman” is clear as a bell in this acutely affecting drama about how a glimpse of cruelty behind convent walls reopens the psychological wounds of a kind family man who has strived to build a life untainted by the stigma and sorrow of his childhood.
That man is Bill Furlong, a hard-working coal merchant and loving father of five daughters, played by Cillian Murphy in a performance that rips your heart out despite being an unimpeachable model of restraint.

Boxing and the movies are no strangers to each other; not too far away on the horizon is Jawbone – which stars Jimmy Harris in its lead and Ray Winstone as a big-hearted boxing gym owner – a British boxing story that may have you feeling a little punch drunk with its gloomy and heartfelt first trailer.
We all know audiences are a bit of a sucker for the storyline of the down and out boxer who makes a passionate fighting comeback against the odds. Our last venture into this world was with Bleed For This starring Miles Teller towards the tail end of last year but nothing can quite live up to the high standards the Rocky spin-off Creed achieved recently. Will Jawbone with its Great British grit and determination pack an almighty punch for lovers of the genre? Time will tell.

Freddie Flintoff has weighed in ahead of his debut professional boxing match tomorrow night (November 30). The retired cricketer will face American Richard Dawson at the Men Arena in Manchester as the culmination of his Sky1 series Flintoff: From Lord's to the Ring. Flintoff has sparred for 300 rounds and lost three-and-a-half stone in weight over four months of training with Barry McGuigan and his son Shane. He has also received coaching from former World Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson, which Flintoff described as "a pretty surreal experience". Flintoff, 34, tipped the scales today at 216lbs (97.98kg), which was 25lbs (11.34kg) lighter than his opponent. "I'd be lying if I said there weren't any nerves, but I experienced nerves in my career before, in cricket, and managed to use them to my advantage - so hopefully this will be no different," (more)...

In the fascinating new film documentary In Sunshine or In Shadows, which will screen on the closing night of this year’s Craic Fest on March 10 at the Tribeca Cinema, award-winning director Andrew Gallimore explores that remarkable night in Irish sporting history when the ultimate outsider climbed to the top of the world rankings. It’s been over a quarter of a century now since legendary boxer Barry McGuigan sent Irish pulses racing, but there was a time when Ireland needed the featherweight world champion more than they could ever have expressed. That time arrived on a balmy hot night in London in 1985 when McGuigan, the Clones Cyclone, dropped the long reigning featherweight champion Eusebio Pedroza from Panama in the seventh round and won a 15 round decision in a fight that riveted the whole country. ______________ Read More: More Irish arts news from Irish Central Off the Record: Romantic tunes for St.

Production has begun on Fastnet Film's new project 'Sunshine or in Shadow', a feature length documentary directed by Andrew Gallimore that examines the dramatic historical connotations and true story behind the epic world featherweight title match that took place between Barry McGuigan and the Panamanian champion Eusebio Pedroza. The clash has become a legendary encounter that gripped the Irish nation on one hot summer's night in 1985. With the same creative team behind the 2009 Ifta winning 'Troid Fhuilteach' (A Bloody Canvas), the film will document the fight which took place in the open air at Loftus Road, home of Qpr football club in West London. Twenty-five thousand Irish spectators attended the contest, with a further twenty million viewers watching on television throughout Ireland and the UK. It was the BBC's largest single viewing figure of the year and confirmed the incredible popularity enjoyed by McGuigan at this time on both sides of the Irish Sea.

The third film in a modern Irish trilogy from Jim Sheridan and Terry George, "The Boxer" joins Sheridan's Oscar-nominated "In the Name of the Father" and George's "Some Mother's Son" as another serious look at troubled Northern Ireland, this time exploring the inner politics of the Irish Republican Army.
Not the stuff of runaway boxoffice but good enough to capture three Golden Globe nominations for best drama, actor and director, the hard-hitting Universal release should connect with its two leads, Daniel Day-Lewis and 1996 Oscar nominee Emily Watson, sparring romantically in dangerous Belfast.
Inspired by the life of Irish boxer Barry McGuigan, Sheridan and co-writer George have assembled the elements of a classic love story amid turmoil. Former IRA member Danny (Day-Lewis) took up boxing in prison and wants to limit his fighting to the ring when released. His old sweetheart Maggie (Watson) married Danny Best's friend, now the one behind bars, but she can't follow her heart.
Maggie has a pro-IRA teenage son (Ciaran Fitzgerald), and her father (Brian Cox) is chief of the local boys, including at least one vicious bloke (Gerard McSorley) who doesn't trust cease-fires and former soldiers like Danny, even when they punish the English legally in sports. In the Barry Fitzgerald/Thomas Mitchell role is Ken Stott as the feisty trainer who dreams of his glory days when he starts working with Danny.
Keeping his gloves on when horrific street battles and bombings are still the reaction of too many to British control of the country, Danny is rebuilding his life. Maggie could be a big part of it, but party rules dictate that wives of prisoners remain faithful, and woe to the daring man who makes a rash move toward one of them.
Danny knows the score, but the two sneak a few meetings. Meanwhile, the uneasy peace is destined to be broken, and the leads are caught up in the viciousness that never seems to end. Throughout, neither Danny nor Maggie is particularly vocal, but the talented actors deftly mix the tragic with the disarmingly playful. Their romance may be muted, but they have strong enough chemistry to keep the film moving, and one comes to dread an unhappy resolution.
What tends to slow down the movie while replaying elements from past works by Sheridan and others are the IRA scenes, where one is expected to sympathize (partially) with hard men in the business of killing innocent people. This time, however, the reason for such harsh measures is hardly introduced. The two sides are small urban armies, with front lines and war meetings in heavily guarded apartment buildings -- a nasty place from which Danny refuses to be driven.
For the terrific boxing scenes, Day-Lewis trained with former featherweight champ McGuigan, and the actor displays a controlled-but-awesome ferocity. The film could have used more such impressive pugilism and less of the usual politically motivated violence, but there's no denying the ending is powerful when brutal justice prevails.
