The décor is tired of being neglected this Halloween season. A restless spirit with malintent uses any and every Halloween decoration and animatronic in its path to wreak havoc upon a small town. While Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow shares a similar premise to another family-friendly, novelty Halloween flick this Fall, its execution is far more energetic and fun.
The Howards have just moved to the quaint town of Bridge Hollow, just in time for Halloween. That’s excellent news for teen Sydney; her keen interest in the supernatural means she’s excited to see the entire block decked out with perfectly themed Halloween lawn displays. Her skeptic dad, Howard (Marlon Wayans), prefers science over superstition and is far less enthused about the Halloween revelry. It also means that father and daughter struggle to see eye to eye, often leaving mom Emily (Kelly Rowland) to referee. But when...

Jungle Cruise may be based on the Disney theme park rides, but the real parallels are with The African Queen, the Bogart and Hepburn classic from 1951. Both films are set on the fringes of the First World War, Queen in German East Africa and Cruise in the Amazon rainforest, and both share a “will they, won’t they?” dynamic that is shaped by their dangerous journey.
Frank (Dwayne Johnson) is much like Bogart’s Charlie Allnut, only 9 inches taller and 130lbs heavier. He lives in a ramshackle boat along the Amazon River, where he operates tourist cruises replete with dad jokes and makeshift attractions. Joining Frank is Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt), who combines the class of Katherine Hepburn’s Rose Sayer with an ability to kick lots of ass. Lily recruits Frank as her skipper in the hunt for the Tree of Life, which is said to have immense...

Just in time as Americans — and much of the world — settle indoors in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, “Black Monday” star Paul Scheer has some TV series suggestions to check out.
For the inaugural episode of Variety’s “My Guilty Pleasure,” Scheer sat down with Variety senior editor Michael Schneider to reveal his (1) TV guilty pleasure; (2) the “deep cut” show you probably haven’t heard of but he recommends; and (3) his “show-mate” — in other words, the TV series he couldn’t live without.
Of course, as “Black Monday” returns for Season 2 on Sunday, March 15, it’s also a good time to catch up on the Showtime comedy. Don Cheadle, Regina Hall, Andrew Rannells and Scheer lead the cast of “Black Monday,” an irreverent take on a group of misfit Wall Street traders who help trigger the 1987 stock market crash. (Did we mention it’s now also inadvertently timely?)

The worst thing you could do is not give the studio a lot of options,” says unit photographer Frank Masi, whose stills have helped show off more than 70 films, from 1995’s “Gordy” to Disney’s upcoming “Jungle Cruise.” Masi has shot photos of stars Will Smith, Bruce Willis, Will Ferrell, Cameron Diaz, Dwayne Johnson and Hugh Jackman, to name just a few, over a 25-year career.
In a single day, Masi, 53, can snap and send upwards of 800 images. Not all still photographers share this methodology, but it has worked for him. On Jan. 18, the Society of Camera Operators will recognize his contributions to the industry with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Masi has galleries of memories from working on movies like “I, Tonya,” “The Hangover,” “Hancock,” “War of the Worlds,” “What Dreams May Come” and many others.

Oscar® nominee Hugh Jackman stars as the charismatic politician Gary Hart for Academy Award®-nominated director Jason Reitman in the new thrilling drama The Front Runner.
The film opens on November 16, 2018 (Select Cities) and November 21, 2018 (Wide).
The film, director and stars, could all see Oscar nominations – based on the trailer, this meaty film looks fantastic.
The film follows the rise and fall of Senator Hart, who captured the imagination of young voters and was considered the overwhelming front runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination when his campaign was sidelined by the story of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice. As tabloid journalism and political journalism merged for the first time, Senator Hart was forced to drop out of the race – events that left a profound and lasting impact on American politics and the world stage.

If there’s one thing you know about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson just from looking at him, it's this: The man is large. Six-foot-four and 260 pounds, with charm and enthusiasm to match – it's no wonder there's more of him than could fit into our recent cover story. Johnson stretches the confines of a magazine profile the way his delts stretch his Under Armour tank tops in the gym.
And so – after two days spent with him and half a dozen interviews with his several of his close friends and collaborators...

Grab your watercrafts and crackers, folks! We’re on our way to CheesyTown, and the first stop is Emerald Bay. To begin, let’s get one thing out of the way, you needn’t be a seasoned Baywatch vet to enjoy the new big-screen incarnation. Being born pre-1989 is not a prerequisite to claim your love for The Bay. Will it help? Perhaps, from a nostalgia standpoint. The same level of cheese is spread thick in both the time-honored show and the brand-new film. The jokes will be new, though. And there is a heck of a lot more pubic and genitalia humor, thanks to the R-rating they’ve procured this time around.
But Baywatch isn’t the kind of post-tv show reboot that mandates hours of binge-watching several syndicated seasons worth of plot to understand what’s going on in the subsequent film. Nope; no need. Do you enjoy jiggling body parts?...

In Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Tina Fey plays a journalist sent to Afghanistan in 2003 when the more-experienced war correspondents flock to the new battlefields of Iraq. Produced by Fey and loosely based on reporter Kim Barker’s memoir “The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the film continues Fey’s pursuit of more dramatic roles, a less-than-stellar quest so far that might cause some audience members to balk at this one. However, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the exception to that rule – actually a very entertaining film, thanks largely to a strong supporting cast that includes Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Alfred Molina, who take the pressure off Fey.
In case any one is in doubt, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (meaning Wtf – get it?) is not a hard-hitting war movie or even really about war, but a tale of war...

20th Century Fox has just released a brand new, red band trailer for their upcoming comedy, Let’S Be Cops, starring the ultimate duo, Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson.
It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops.
When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.
The movie also features Rob Riggle, Nina Dobrev, James D’Arcy and Andy Garcia.
Get ready to laugh out loud when Let’S Be Cops hits theaters everywhere on August 13.

Chicago – If you didn’t see the DC Entertainment splash screen when this “Red 2” sequel kicks off with the fake death of one of its usual suspects, you wouldn’t mind that the rest of the film feels nothing like a comic book movie except for its animated transitions between scenes.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
No “comic book fan” would say this movie does the intensely cult-favorite genre any justice or holds up in even close to the same league as other DC films like “The Dark Knight,” “Watchmen” and various “Superman” attempts.
So despite this massive missed opportunity, abandoning that failure does allow you to find a silver lining in other redeeming qualities. In a film that packs in so many “A”-listers, this time it pays off. Each one brings a uniquely defined and mostly memorable addition to an overall story that’s somewhere in between great and too thin.

Chicago – Face it, it is fun to see the major action stars of the 1980s, ‘90s and now – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger – together again for “The Expendables 2.” Why the hell can’t anyone write a decent story for them?
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The film improves on the first movie, not that there was that a long way to go. The action is more relevant and bolder, plus the villainy of Jean-Claude Van Damme is smarmier, but the overall product is the same formulaic crap that plugs into any action film. There is a sense that this joke-filled concept should rise above the usual, and it doesn’t. Additionally Stallone (who co-wrote the screenplay) seems very tired going through the same action poses. It would have been better if the Expendables main mission prevented him from plotting “Rocky 7.”

Battleship: Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch Brooklyn Decker has two box-office disappointments opening on the same weekend: Decker is featured in Battleship and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Both movies opened way below expectations on Friday; in fact, official studio estimates released Saturday morning have them faring even worse than Friday night estimates indicated. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Peter Berg’s Battleship raked in $9m at 3,650 locations on Friday in the Us/Canada according to Box Office Mojo. That’s about $500k less than early estimates. For comparison’s sake: Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, at the start of its third weekend out, took in an estimated $15.3m. Box-office prognosticators were expecting Battleship to gross $40m on its first weekend out in North America. It turns out the alien invasion actioner / sci-fier will be lucky if it earns much more than $25m. A Universal release, Battleship cost a reported $209m.

Taylor Kitsch (photo) continues to have poor luck at the North American box office. First, Disney’s Andrew Stanton-directed sci-fier / actioner John Carter became one of the biggest domestic bombs ever (in relation to the film’s gargantuan cost) when it opened in early March. Now comes Peter Berg‘s sci-fier / actioner box-office dud Battleship, which opened with an estimated $9.5m at 3,650 locations on Friday in the Us/Canada — well behind The Avengers‘ estimated $15.5m at the start of its third weekend. A Universal release, Battleship is expected to collect $26m at the North American box office this weekend according to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com. That’s a dismal figure for a movie that cost a reported $209m. For comparison’s sake, John Carter, whose reported budget was $250m, opened with $30.18m. John Carter‘s domestic total to date is $71.78m. Internationally, it fared much better: $200.6m; a solid amount,...

Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz in James Mangold‘s Knight and Day Tom Cruise‘s vehicle Knight and Day was labeled a "belly-up flop" in the United States because it opened in late June with $20.1m on its initial weekend (the spy caper had been out since Wed. that week). Not helping matters was Cruise’s reputation as a Couch-Jumping Scientologist. Its run is almost over, Tom Cruise’s "flop" has taken in nearly $76m at the domestic box office. Not a bad figure, though a disappointment considering the film’s $117m production cost (not including marketing/distribution expenses). However, Knight and Day has scored $146.5m overseas, where apparently people don’t care about Cruise’s religious beliefs or where he chooses to do his calisthenics. The film’s worldwide total to date is $222.27m, placing it at no. 17 among 2010 releases. Not bad at all for a belly-up flop. Photo: Knight and Day...

Chicago – Whenever there is a audacious and entertaining action thriller like “Knight and Day,” how do the characters stay so calm? Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise are shot at, nearly blown up, asked to drive and leap around like lunatics, yet remain perfectly white-toothed calm. A normal human reaction would be ‘Oh my gaaaaaaaaaawd!”

Tom Cruise is Roy Miller, super CIA spy, who connects with ordinary citizen June Havens (Cameron Diaz) in a Wichita airport. Using her to transport an ultra-secret invention through security, Miller thinks that will be the last time he’ll need her. But it turns out that this spy is being shadowed by other CIA agents, led by Agent Fitzgerald (a deliciously oily Peter Sarsgaard).
It turns out that Miller has gone rogue, in an attempt to protect the invention that he thinks is being stolen by Agent Fitzgerald. So when the shadowing CIA puts...

G.I. Joe is the best Lorenzo di Bonaventura-produced movie based on a Hasbro toy line that I’ve seen this summer. And that’s because Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is 30 minutes longer. G.I. Joe left me apathetic. The film is two hours of non-stop CG-action, frantically directed by Mummy director Stephen Sommers, who must have had rabies when he shot this unremitting escalation of climaxes that plays like a never-ending crescendo.
Fans of the 1980s G.I. Joe cartoon (of which I was one) will have to live without Shipwreck, Torch, Lady Jaye, Flint, Tomax & Xamot and Sgt. Slaughter (remember him?), but trust me, there are more than enough characters (too many, in fact) in this film to keep you busy—if only the movie’s action stopped for two seconds, you might get to know something about them. Oh, wait, a couple of the leads get some silly Lost-style flashbacks,...
