Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman are absolutely incredible on their own but when they come together, they are a force to reckon with. The two have worked together in Unforgiven (1992), Million Dollar Baby (2004), and Invictus (2009). While Clint Eastwood has both directed and starred in the first two films, he only served as the director of Invictus.

Sombre documentary focuses on the former Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, and how he is becoming a Mandela-like figure since his imprisonment in 2002
Here is a film that offers something not generally on offer in the media: an envisioning of the future and a road map, or part of a road map, out of the present situation in Israel and Palestine. It’s about Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, an initial supporter of the 1993 and 1995 Oslo peace accords who became progressively disillusioned with the slow choreography of international consensus, and was ultimately imprisoned in 2002 for authorising deadly attacks on Israel. Barghouti’s position is not that he is innocent, but that an Israeli court has no right to try him.
During the long years since, he has gone on hunger strike, been beaten and abused in captivity; his grownup children have themselves been targeted and arrested and his wife Fadwa has...

Donald Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said that her client would be like the late South African President Nelson Mandela if he gets jailed for violating the gag order in his New York hush money trial.
On April 1, Judge Juan Merchan expanded a gag order in the case, thereby keeping Trump from constantly attacking his daughter, Loren Merchan.
Initially, the gag order blocked the former president from making public statements about witnesses, other prosecutors, court staff and their family members if they were “made with the intent to interfere with” this case materially.
In a court filing on April 16, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office asked Judge Merchan to hold Trump in contempt for frequently using social media to disparage two of the witnesses in his hush money trial – ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former porn star Stormy Daniels.

“I bring you news from America, where commissions are plentiful and they all come within two weeks,” joked Dawn Porter, playing to the industry crowd at the international television market MIPTV on Sunday.
It got a big laugh. Everyone in the audience knows the reality: That the era of peak TV is past and that broadcasters and streamers are slashing their budgets for original programming. That decline is one of the reasons this will be the last MIPTV, with plans to move Mip to London next year and dramatically downsize the storied TV market. The mood on the Croisette this year is practically funereal.
But Porter came to Mip not to bury the TV business but to praise it.

An acute sense of instability will inform much of the content bought and sold on the MipTV floor, though the symptoms might manifest themselves beyond doom and gloom. Somewhat unsurprisingly, given an unrelenting remit of climate anxieties and global unrest, this tendency has left no genre untouched.
“Obviously the world in which we live is quite dramatic at the moment, and that has created an appetite for stories that offer solutions,” explains international distribution expert Beatrice Rossmanith. As head of global business for consulting firm Glance Ltd (formerly known as Tape Consultancy), Rossmanith monitors content across hundreds of channels in 45 territories worldwide. And lately she has noticed a pervasive trend.

Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader who went from 27 years as a political prisoner to eventually becoming the first president of a free South Africa, will be the subject of the 30-hour scripted TV series “Mandela.” The project is currently the works at writer/producer Josh Wakely’s Grace: A Storytelling Company shingle.
Wakely has secured the TV series life rights to the late Mandela via House of Mandela Entertainment, the media arm of the Mandela estate. Wakely will executive produce and write “Mandela,” along with South African writer/director Kagiso Lediga (“Queen Sono”) and producer Kweku Mandela (who is also Nelson Mandela’s grandson).
The project, which Wakely compares to a multi-season saga in the vein of Netflix’s “The Crown,” will center on Mandela’s life as he was sent to prison while aiming to end apartheid, the system of institutional racism and segregation that was administered in South Africa for generations.

Paul Giamatti is the everyman kind of celebrity where even though he’s an actor who has worked in big films amongst big stars, he will still go to In-N-Out Burger to celebrate an awards win. During the pandemic, when Zoom communication skyrocketed, Giamatti found a peer in Stephen Asma, an author and philosophy professor at Columbia College Chicago. Giamatti sought out the professor after being intrigued by his lectures about imagination and consciousness. He explained, “We were Zooming when Zoom was a new thing. It was nice to chat with this guy, and we found each other having these longer and longer chat. Stephen jokingly said, ‘We ought to do something with this.’ ”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Giamatti followed suit with his fellow actors who turned to podcasting, except Giamatti’s show would not feature co-stars or Hollywood friends to promote their projects, but instead have them...

Like everyone else during the pandemic, Paul Giamatti found solace on Zoom. The veteran actor caught an online talk presented by Stephen Asma, an author and philosophy professor at Columbia College Chicago. Giamatti liked what Asma had to say about imagination and consciousness, so he did what any well-connected fan would do and reached out.
“We were Zooming when Zoom was a new thing. It was nice to chat with this guy, and we found each other having these longer and longer chats,” says Giamatti during a rare break from his best actor Oscar campaign for his role in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers. “Stephen jokingly said, ‘We ought to do something with this.’ ” The joke then turned serious. To craft their pitch, they sent one of their chats to visual artist Alex Sokol, who added animation and striking images to represent things they bantered about, like aliens, UFOs and bigfoot.

Akin Omotoso, the filmmaker behind Disney Plus’ Giannis Antetokounmpo biopic “Rise,” has been attached to direct “The Plot to Save South Africa,” an adaptation of Justice Malala’s gripping book about a 1990s white supremacist plot that almost plunged the young democracy into civil war.
“The Plot to Save South Africa” will be produced by Johannesburg-based production outfit Ochre Moving Pictures, which signed a deal with Netflix last year to adapt multiple books for the streaming service alongside Omotoso. “Plot,” however, is not included in that deal, and is part of an existing partnership between Ochre and Omotoso that includes a crime drama adaptation of Nigerian playwright Femi Osofisan’s novel “Pirates.”
The story begins in 1993, as Nelson Mandela has just been released after 27 years in prison and is in power-sharing talks with President F.W. de Klerk. After decades of resistance, the apartheid regime seems poised to fall, until a...

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.
“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

Elba did a feature that meant a lot to him with the 2015 movie Beasts of No Nation. The project saw Elba playing a military commander who adopts a young boy to be one of his child soldiers.
Right from the beginning, Elba confided that the movie was a personal project of his. His family was very familiar with the environment Beasts of No Nation took place in, so Elba almost felt obligated to do the film.
“This story is close to me because my parents come from Sierra Leone which is a country that was ravaged [by war] as you know,” Elba once told Nz Herald.

Outlaw Posse follows an outlaw in 1908 who returns from years of hiding in Mexico to claim stolen gold treasure hidden in the hills of Montana.
Van Peebles reflected on his inspiration for the project. “When I wrote Outlaw Posse I was thinking about this Johny Cash song… where all his life the boy has issues with his dad and then he really starts to understand his father at a certain point inadvertently and understand him in a different way,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers.
Outlaw Posse’s cast boasts notable actors, including Whoopi Goldberg and Edward James Olmos. The film also features Van Peebles’ son, Mandela, who plays his on-screen son.

Antoine Fuqua is set to direct a feature documentary about Nelson Mandela, Variety has learned.
Provisionally titled “Troublemaker: The Story Behind the Mandela Tapes,” the doc will use newly discovered audio interviews with Mandela himself to deliver an “honest, accurate and definitive depiction” of the man who remains a global symbol of justice, hope and universal human dignity, according to a press release.
The “Training Day” director has teamed with Mandela’s close friend and former cellmate Mac Maharaj on the project, who will serve as an executive producer. While spending 12 years alongside Mandela in a tiny cell on Robben Island, Maharaj transcribed Mandela’s autobiography before eventually smuggling it out of jail. He later went on to become a minister in Mandela’s government.

It entered the UK chart at No. 1, where it stayed for five weeks, raising over £1,000,000 for the charity, and Queen became the first band to have the same single top the UK charts twice. In December of that year Queen had 10 albums in the UK Top 100. The 2009 biographical drama Invictus was one of the year’s most popular flicks. With a star-studded cast, heartfelt emotional moments, and lots of careful attention to detail, Invictus told a true story and did it well — earning lots of acclaim for star Morgan Freeman. Partially based on a 2008 book, Invictus featured several real-life events, including one that, while ultimately very inspiring, terrified Nelson Mandela’s security team when it occurred.

Disney-owned ESPN LatAm acquired rights for its Star+ streaming service and ESPN channels in the region. Other deals are known to be close to completion.

Hanover Street follows the joyful and heartbreaking journey of two sisters in Cape Town’s District Six during South Africa’s Apartheid years. The vibrant neighborhood was home to 60k residents of all ethnicities and creeds, along with a thriving LGBTQ+ population. In 1966 the government designated it a “Whites-only” area. By 1982 the entire population had been forcibly removed, with families torn apart and the neighborhood destroyed. Hanover Street will reflect upon the correlation between the racial reconciliation that has taken place in South Africa and the important conversations happening in America today.

Meghan Markle is having a busy couple of weeks and they are dramatic ones at that. While you could say that about every week since she met Prince Harry and the pair hightailed it for Montecito, California, this one has been particularly juicy.
First, Meghan released the first few episodes of her podcast, Archetypes, one of which featured an interview with professional tennis player Serena Williams. However, Meghan, or the Duchess of Sussex, spoke for the first 11 minutes and according to critics spoke mostly about herself.
Of all the questions she could have asked someone who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles throughout her illustrious career, they came few and far between.
And, let’s not forget that bizarre or upsetting story, however you want to look at it, in which Meghan spoke about a fire that broke out in...

A Lion King actor and friend of Nelson Mandela says he is “baffled” after Meghan Markle claimed she was told people in South Africa “rejoiced in the streets” over her marriage to the Duke of Sussex.
In a recent interview, the Duchess of Sussex told The Cut magazine that an unnamed South African actor from the cast of the 2019 film of The Lion King made the surprise proclamation during the London premiere.
“He looked at me, and he’s just like light,” Meghan recalled. “‘I just need you to know: When you married into [the royal family], we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison’.”
However, Dr John Kani, who voiced the mandrill shaman Rafiki in the Disney film, has now claimed that he was the only South African actor in the production, and also said that he had never met the Duchess and did not attend the UK premiere,...

Meghan Markle wasn’t so thrilled to be labelled a “diva” by Mariah Carey.
The pair discussed the complexities surrounding the word during the latest episode of Markle’s “Archetypes” podcast.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela has responded to Meghan Markle’s recent comments to The Cut.
Meghan said in the piece, that was titled “Meghan of Montecito”, that an actor from South Africa pulled her aside at the 2019 “Lion King” premiere to say: “I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.”
The Cut article added, “Of course, she knows she’s no Mandela, but perhaps even telling me this story is a mode of defence, because if you are a symbol for all that is good and charitable, how can anybody find you objectionable, how can anybody hate you?”
Mandla said of his grandfather being released after serving 27 years in prison, “Madiba’s celebration was based on overcoming 350 years of colonialism with 60 years of a brutal apartheid regime in South Africa.

Meghan has spoken before about the alleged racism she experienced while pregnant with her and the Duke of Sussex’s son, Archie.
In a 2021 interview with Oprah, she explained that a big part of their decision to leave the UK was the tabloid racism that created a “toxic environment” of “control and fear”.
Now, in a new interview with The Cut, Meghan described the period of time just after giving birth.
“I just had Archie. It was such a cruel chapter. I was scared to go out,” she said.

Red Bull Studios (Rbs), one of the producers behind the electrifying documentary “The Real Mo Farah,” have set their next project, titled “The Moment: How Sports Changed the World,” Variety can exclusively reveal.
Directed by Tom Jennings of 1895 Films, “The Moment” is a feature doc that explores the lasting repercussions of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which was controversially held in South Africa at the tail end of apartheid. At the time, the South African national team (nicknamed the Springboks) had only one Black player – Chester Williams – but ended up winning the tournament in a moment that united the country (pictured above is Mandela congratulating Springbok captain François Pienaar following their win).
“The well-known story is that Nelson Mandela really took a risk with [hosting the Rugby World Cup in 1995] because the Springboks were seen as symbolic of apartheid and they were loathed in South Africa outside of the white nationals,” Red Bull Studios’ global head, Bernadette McDaid,...

The life of former South African President Nelson Mandela is too large to fit into a single film. As such, if one is going to feature films to construct a full biography, Mandela's story can be pieced together from multiple high-profile movies released over the years. The 1987 HBO TV movie "Mandela" starred Danny Glover in the title role, though the piece of media is difficult to track down. The 1997 TV movie "Mandela and de Klerk" was about the political relationship between the new president (Sidney Poitier) and the ousted one (Michael Caine). The 2007 film "Goodbye Bafana" featured the relationship Mandela (Dennis Haysbert)...
