The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was first casting actors in 1986, Brent Spiner -- who would land the role of Data -- was about 37 years old. Spiner's original makeup tests show that Data might have sported a pinker shade of skin, and producers were debating whether to give him his eventual chartreuse-colored eyes or use a more aggressive tangerine shade. Eventually, Data was given pale alabaster skin, and his hair was darkened and slicked back. The makeup made Data look artificial, yet human. It was a pretty simple, effective design.
But while Data was an artificial life form that didn't age, Spiner was a very human actor who did. The fact that Spiner began to show his age in the later seasons of "Next Generation" was hand-waved away in the episode "Inheritance". Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) had encountered another android that had also exhibited signs of age, and the...

The third and final season of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” provided a lot of pleasure for diehard “Star Trek” fans, who were appropriately delighted to see Patrick Stewart‘s title character reunited with the crew of the USS Enterprise from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The show’s Emmy-nominated make-up artists are fans too and saw it as their responsibility to pay tribute to the past while finding new ways of presenting the characters for 2023. “We have to be conscious of what’s happened in the past and elevate it,” prosthetics department head James MacKinnon told IndieWire. “We’re paying homage to what Mike Westmore did [on earlier shows like ‘Tng,’ ‘Deep Space Nine,’ and ‘Enterprise’] and then using the next level in technology, like ZBrush [digital sculpting software] and 3D printed pieces that now go on prosthetics or that you use in the molding process, which saves so much time.”

“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. We talked to Matalas for our “Making Of” panel series along with costume designer Michael Crow, makeup department head James MacKinnon, prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman. The second season of "Star Trek: Picard" featured a convoluted plot. In it, Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart) was abruptly whisked off to a parallel dimension by the trickster god Q (John De Lancie) where the Earth had descended into a fascist hellscape. All of Earth's enemies had been wiped out by the planet's military, and humanity was on the verge of killing the very last Borg. To address the problem, Picard and his friends have to travel back in time to the year 2024 to discover how everything went sour. But to make the complex calculations required for time travel, Picard had to kidnap the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching), a malevolent half-machine super genius, and wire her into a ship's engines.
The Borg Queen, however, is a supervillain who takes every opportunity to escape or to talk her way into infiltrating the mind of the mild-mannered Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill). Later in the series,...

“We were in Covid and we were rolling into the Christmas season,” says Emmy nominee Bruce Grayson while discussing his opportunity to head up the makeup department for “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special.” “When asked if we could pull something like this off in the deep Covid months of 2020 I thought, ‘Well, this would be cool not only because it would be an accomplishment to get the industry up and running, but also to create a TV special with Mariah Carey.’ She owns Christmas.” Watch the exclusive interview with Grayson and six-time Emmy winner James Mackinnon above.
The special premiered on Apple TV+ on December 4 with hopes of bringing Christmas cheer at the end of a year filled with heartache and uncertainty for many. It featured a large lineup of guest stars including Billy Eichner, Ariana Grande, Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg and perhaps most importantly, Santa Claus!

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.

I traveled to Malawi in January of 2005. It was my first time in Sub-Saharan Africa, a place which felt like an obscure Narnia. I found myself in Kachere Juvenile Prison, located in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. I was there with my co-writer, James MacKinnon, to collect material for the Malawi chapter of I Live Here, a four-volume anthology about vanishing communities around the world. James and I stood in the center of the prison watching these boys search for shade. It was quiet in there. Oddly so. The sun, like an open sore, seeped into our pores, robbing us of energy. There was a sharp smell of shit, made pungent by the heat. Back then, there were roughly ninety boys in Kachere. They appeared to be waiting for something. I'm not sure what. Upon release many have no...

Who killed Jenny Schecter? A mere five months ago, that was the burning question on lesbian lips in living rooms and local bars from Los Angeles to Little Falls, New Jersey.
Mia Kirshner (Miss Conception, The Black Dahlia, 24) — the astonishing actor who played Jenny, and managed to find the humanity in a character known for uttering, "Adele, the appliqué on the back of your jeans was declared an abomination by the Geneva Convention," and other psychotic bon mots — is in fact a thoughtful woman who'd rather spend time with her friends than bask in the spotlight of Hollywood.
After a record six years as Showtime's longest running original series, The L Word finally ended in March, putting our love-to-hate relationship with Jenny Schecter to rest, not to mention relieving us of those annoying alliterations.
What many people don't know is, all that time, Mia was also focused on humanitarian issues,...

To read “From the mind of Doug Hutchison”, for genre fans anyway, is an invitation to be freaked out. The actor, who has given horror fans such memorable characters as Eugene Victor Tooms in two episodes of “The X Files” – “Squeeze” and “Tooms” (both in Season One of the show), Percy Wetmore, one of Stephen King’s more horrific villains, in Frank Darabont’s The Green Mile and most recently, Henry Victor, the racist and borderline sociopathic Army officer in Jt Petty’s, The Burrowers, is also a writer And serious horror fan himself.
Beginning in October 2008, under the banner of his own production company, Dark Water, Hutchison launched a web series entitled, "Vampire Killers". Set in modern day Los Angeles, the premise is that in a city the size of La, with a vampire population of over 500,000, there are only 4 vampire killers to deal with the problem. And a problem this is indeed.
