Cuba has just been opened up to Americans, but twenty years ago musician Ry Cooder saw to it that a vanishing music tradition was preserved for posterity. Wim Wenders followed up with this rough & ready documentary that became almost as popular as the best selling album of mambos, boleros and cha-chas.

The red carpet at the Oscars was a tad nippy this year, as actresses shivered in their diaphanous sleeveless gowns and strappy stilettos. Also exposing a lot of skin was the Australian cast from foreign language nominee “Tanna.”
Best Actress nominee Isabelle Huppert, fresh from winning a Cesar in Paris and an Indie Spirit in Santa Monica, wisely covered up.
Many nominees brought their parents, from composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Moana”) to Dev Patel (“Lion”).
“Lion” star Nicole Kidman brought her husband Keith Urban. “You’re the lioness that roared,” Daily Mail correspondent Baz Bamigboye told her. “I’m a kitten,” she demurred. “I’m not sure about that,” replied Urban.
On the carpet, you can see that Scarlett Johansson has a peekaboo tattoo under her arm, and that Taraji P. Henson had coated her long legs to shimmer with gold. “You’re not a hidden figure!” chortled an admiring Bamigboye.

“If I tell you to move a little, it’s not because I don’t think you’re beautiful,” said Rose Troche, speaking to an extra on the set for her latest Vr film, an untitled short based on the Orlando shooting. “I like to have things happening all over.”
Most of the extras were too young to remember “Go Fish,” Troche’s history-making debut feature. (Made for an estimated $15,000, it made over $2.5 million at the box office.) Shot in black and white, “Go Fish” is a lesbian romantic comedy that became the little indie that could when it played Sundance in 1994. “I don’t think ‘Go Fish’ launched a thousand queer filmmakers so much as it launched a thousand indie filmmakers,” Troche said.
Troche went on to direct “Bedrooms and Hallways” in 1998 and “The Safety of Objects” in 2001. Since then she’s moved to TV, directing an episode of...

It’s been a week since “Parks and Recreation” ended. In my review of the series finale, I said that I put off my usual post-season interview with Mike Schur at the time because he was otherwise occupied. (He did, though, offer an answer of sorts as to the question of who is Potus in the year 2048.) Over the last few days, though, we emailed some questions and answers back and forth on leftover bits of business from the finale and the final season, including the show finally identifying Leslie’s party affiliation, which guest stars Schur didn’t manage to squeeze into the final season, Ron and Leslie’s brief estrangement, the religious background(s) of the all-important Lerpiss family, and more. So if you haven’t tired of Schur after the two-part interview we did before the finale, here’s us talking “Parks” one last time (sigh)… Was...

"Dexter's" fourth episode this season is titled "Run," after a note left by serial killer Speltzer when he finds himself trapped in the Minotaur's maze.
"I don't run," Dexter (Michael C. Hall) says. "I make people run."
Does that include his sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), now that she knows he's a serial killer?
Bloodbath: Deb is certainly having trouble coping. Finding herself in a bloody bathtub in a gruesome dream, she realizes his link to the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) and blames Dexter for Rita's murder. She also suggests that he send his son Harrison away and unfairly blames him for the fact that she almost became one of Speltzer's victims. (Dex does indeed send Harrison to Orlando, but only temporarily. We hope, because his nostalgia over Harrison's little Lambie proves that Dex is more human than he -- or Deb -- thinks.)
The Closer: Deb has good cause to be frustrated,...
