Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Gal Gadot is going from superhero to super spy in the action-packed first trailer for the international espionage thriller ‘Heart of Stone’, reports Variety.
Gadot was joined by co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt at Netflix’s Tudum fan festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where the trio debuted the film’s first trailer. The footage features heart-stopping stunts, like Gadot’s Rachel Stone, an intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency, skydiving from a death-defying height.

Billy Ray and Todd Garner are back for Week 5 of the WGA standoff on Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast. Click below to listen.
This week, Strike Talk looks at the role of independent producers. While often characterized as being pitted against writers by the companies, they are actually natural allies to the writers. The adage is it starts on the page, but often producers are the catalysts for getting projects hatched. Most only get paid when films and series commence to production. They are also the first ones to take haircuts when financiers decide budgets have to be shaved. Unlike writers, independent producers have no collective bargaining entity fighting for minimums and backends for them.
Joining in the discussion about the producer plight, and whether they should come under the same guild as writers and other creatives for more might at the bargaining table, are Mockingbird Pictures principals Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis.

Cartoon Saloon’s “My Father’s Dragon” (streaming on Netflix November 11), the whimsical 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, got some Oscar heat this week by winning the Special Jury prize at the Animation Is Film Festival. It’s quite a contrast to Irish director Nora Twomey’s Oscar-nominated directorial debut, “The Breadwinner,” based on Deborah Ellis’ popular YA novel about Afghan oppression.
But the mere suggestion that “My Father’s Dragon” is kid-friendlier registers a protest from the director. The tone might be gentler, but the themes of parenting and puberty are very complex, she insists.
“My Father’s Dragon” explores the rite of passage experienced by the restless Elmer (Jacob Tremblay), who runs away from his hard-working mother (Golshifteh Farahani) and their bleak existence in the noirish city of Nevergreen to the colorful but endangered Wild Island, where he bonds with a dragon...

The trailer for Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray opens with the revelation a father’s last wish was that his sons dig his grave, which is odd but also strangely moving. Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke star as half-brothers who weren’t exactly close to each other or their dad before he died, but the trailer teases their relationship will transform as they come to terms with their father’s death.
Maribel Verdú (Now and Then), Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses), Tom Bower (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), and Vondie Curtis Hall (For the People) also star in writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s new dramedy. Garcia earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of Big Love. His feature film directorial credits include 2008’s Passengers with Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson; 2009’s Mother and Child starring Naomi Watts and Annette Bening; and three-time Oscar nominee Albert Nobbs with Glenn Close.

From “Extraction” to “The Gray Man,” Netflix has released plenty of action thrillers over the past few years. Now it is Gal Gadot’s turn to headline one with “Heart of Stone,” a spy film directed by Tom Harper (“Peaky Blinders”) and set for release next year.
“Heart of Stone” got its first sneak peek as part of Netflix’s Tudum event, with Gadot hyping the “extremely epic” film alongside co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt. Action thrillers have been a big part of Tudum, which showcases the streamer’s upcoming original series and films. Other action films showcased at the event include a sequel to “Extraction” starring Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Lopez playing an assassin in “The Mother.”

With the abundance of labs and fellowships designed to give up-and-coming filmmakers a much-needed boost, the Nicholl Fellowship — launched in 1986 — still stands above the fray as being one of the most important opportunities for entry into the industry. Each of the winners receives a $35,000 prize with the understanding that they will complete a feature-length screenplay during their fellowship year. Just as important, their winning project instantly becomes a must-read by every agency in Hollywood.
The global competition has awarded 152 fellowships to date. Recent scripts by Nicholl Fellowship alumni include “The Glass Castle” and “Holy Rollers;” additional program veterans have gone on to receive plum writing assignments in film (Pixar’s “Cars 3”) and television (Netflix’s “The Punisher”).
Nine individuals and one screenwriting team were selected as 2017 fellowship recipients from more than 7,000 submissions; the winners are listed in bold:

AMC has ordered a 10-episode adaptation of “Dietland,” the 2015 novel about weight loss and beauty, from executive producer Marti Noxon (“UnReal,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).
The novel, written by Sarai Walker and released in 2015, takes place in the beauty industry and mixes character drama and revenge fantasy to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty. Kirkus Reviews called the book “part ‘Fight Club,’ part feminist manifesto, an offbeat and genre-bending novel that aims high.”
Noxon, who will direct the first several episodes of the series, elaborated more about the show on Saturday at AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Noxon said she was concerned at first that she wouldn’t find a home for “Dietland,” which she noted features a “funny and poignant” story that “you can’t quantify.”
But it’s also dark: The main character is morbidly obese, and finds herself being pulled between two feminist cults.

“Funny” isn’t the first word that comes to mind when describing a film about eating disorders and the people who suffer from them, but Marti Noxon’s “To the Bone” manages to be both very funny and very moving, often at the same time. Loosely based on her own experiences with anorexia, the lauded writer and showrunner’s feature directorial debut is bound for a Netflix release after the streaming outfit picked up the film after its Sundance premiere earlier this year.
It was a good buy, and Netflix seems to be celebrating that with an equally as good trailer, one that plays on both the film’s humor and heart.

For her feature directorial debut, Marti Noxon goes deep. Her Sundance premiere “To the Bone” is based on her own experiences with eating disorders and recovery, framed around the darkly funny journey of a young anorexic named Ellen (Lily Collins) as she attempts a radical treatment that offers her what is likely her last chance at survival. (No, really, it’s funny.)
Noxon is already a major name in the television space, best known for writing and producing series such as the beloved “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (where she was mentored by Joss Whedon) and recent smash hit “UNreal.” She’s dabbled in film before, including penning scripts for Rick Rosenthal’s late-’90s romantic comedy “Just a Little Harmless Sex” and the 2011 remake of “Fright Night.” But she’s never done anything quite like “To the Bone.”

Like so many indie movies, “Wakefield” was something of a miracle for writer-director Robin Swicord. It’s been more than eight years since “The Jane Austen Book Club” (an average statistic for women directors); in the meantime she received an Oscar nomination for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (she shared story by credit with Eric Roth). But for “Wakefield” to happen required infinite patience and no small amount of luck.
Swicord sent “Wakefield” over the transom to Telluride co-director Tom Luddy. “He loves the interesting movie,” she said. “He has broad taste, a love for European movies. I felt when I was cutting ‘Wakefield,’ ‘We are making an interesting, strange movie.'”

Hollywood’s summer blockbuster season may be in full effect, with marquee releases in the vein of Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad being readied for release over the next fortnight or so, but it won’t be long before moviegoers will be knee-deep in award-tipped science fiction.
Passengers, for instance, is one that immediately springs to mind – not lest because it stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, arguably two of the most in-demand stars of the moment – while Julius Onah’s God Particle is also harboring plenty of promise. Another potential hitch has been nipped in the bud during pre-production for Daniel Espinosa’s high-profile sci-fi drama, Life.
Initially, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds was to take point as the film’s protagonist, though the actor’s lasting commitment to The Hitman’s Bodyguard recently bumped him down to a smaller role, opening up the part for Jake Gyllenhaal.
That’s quite the save, considering Gyllenhaal’s recent track record includes Prisoners, Nightcrawler and the soon-to-be-released Demolition. No word yet on the specific character Gyllenhaal will portray, but there’s another change occurring behind the scenes.
Much like Reynolds’ allegiance to The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Paramount is currently presiding over J.J. Abrams-produced sci-fi drama God Particle. Alas, whereas the actor found some wiggle room to ensure he could still feature in both films, Paramount has opted to pass up Life, allowing Sony to swoop in to assume financial and distribution duties.

Jake Gyllenhaal is bound for the Red Planet. Proving he’s made of the right stuff, Variety brings word that the Demolition actor will star opposite Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson in Life, Skydance and Daniel Espinosa’s starry sci-fi feature.
As the title suggests, Espinosa’s – reuniting with his Safe House actor for the flick – drama centers on the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence on Mars, just don’t expect Matt Damon’s Mark Watney to be rocking out to Abba on the sun-scorched surface.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are penning the script for Life, with Paramount reportedly in line to distribute. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn are all on board to produce.
