Having a hissable, recurring villain adds that special something to any TV procedural.
Elijah Stone has been filling that role on The Rookie, tormenting members of the LAPD's Metro Division over the past two seasons (although it feels longer).
Sadly, complex villains such as Stone have recently become less of a thing on broadcast TV.
Let's look at the famed Hawaii Five-0 villain, Wo Fat, as a case study.
During the series' original run, Wo Fat was a crime boss, a red Chinese spy who answered to Peking (it was a different time) and served as the primary enemy of Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord).
Wo Fat (portrayed by Khigh Dhiegh) hung like a dense fog over that version, appearing in 15 episodes over nine of the show's 12 seasons.
In the rebooted series, Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) was a crime boss and former Chinese Ministry of Interior agent. appeared...

Stop me if you've heard this one before.
It's a movie about a mad bomber who puts a bomb on a vehicle, and if that vehicle stops it's going to blow up. So the authorities try to figure out who the bomber is, but he's too clever to be captured, while the people in the vehicle do everything in their power to keep the engine running, find the bomb, and defuse it before it blows up.
That's the plot of the Oscar-winning blockbuster "Speed," directed by Jan De Bont and written by Christopher Yost (with an uncredited but substantial rewrite by Joss Whedon). When "Speed" came out in 1994 the premise seemed pretty novel, taking the already tried-and-true premise of "Die Hard on a [Blank]" and setting it on a bus that can't stop plowing through traffic in the middle of the day in Los Angeles, where there is — take it from...

Among James Bond movies, "Goldfinger" stands as the film that cemented 007's status as a global icon. Guy Hamilton's 1964 effort has since become known as the blueprint for all future Bond films, establishing longstanding tropes that still define the franchise today. A globe-spanning adventure, "Goldfinger" introduced that gadget-filled Aston Martin DB5 alongside legendary Bond girl Pussy Galore, played by the late Honor Blackman. Then there was that famous laser beam scene, in which Sean Connery's Bond is strapped to a table and forced to await an inexplicably slow death.
But it wasn't just gadgets and Bond girls with dodgy names that "Goldfinger" brought to the table. Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn's script also introduced more subtle staples to the 007 saga, including an opening sequence seemingly unrelated to the film's main plot and a testy relationship between the titular spy and Desmond Llewelyn's Q that established the pair's dynamic going forward.

Robert Brown, who starred alongside David Soul and Bobby Sherman by portraying the oldest of the three logging Bolt brothers on the 1968-70 ABC series Here Come the Brides, has died. He was 95.
Brown died Sept. 19 at his home in Ojai, his friend Kiki Bremont told The Hollywood Reporter.
Brown appeared twice on Broadway and guest-starred as alternating versions of a dilithium-lusting character named Lazarus on the 1967 Star Trek episode “The Alternative Factor.” He got that gig when John Drew Barrymore failed to show up on the morning of the shoot.
In 1968, Brown was on the other end of a last-minute replacement situation. All set to star as Det. Steve McGarrett on the original Hawaii Five-0, he was replaced by Jack Lord five days before filming on the pilot began after producer Leonard Freeman had a change of heart about his leading man.

By Harvey F. Chartrand
Naked City was like no other TV series before or since – Michel Moriarty, star of Law and Order, once told this reviewer.
Inspired by Jules Dassin's 1948 film of the same name, Naked City centers on the detectives of the NYPD’s 65th Precinct, but the criminals and New York City itself often played as prominent a role in the dramas as the series regulars. Like the film it was based on, Naked City (1958- 1963) was shot almost entirely on location. The first season ran as a half-hour show under the title The Naked City, starring James Franciscus and John McIntire playing, respectively, Detective Jimmy Halloran and Lieutenant Dan Muldoon—the same roles essayed by Don Taylor and Barry Fitzgerald in the film.
The Naked City also starred Harry Bellaver as Det.

It's been one week since we waved goodbye to Hawaii Five-0, and more details are creeping out about the series finale of the CBS drama.
It turns out, a scene from Hawaii Five-0 Season 7 Episode 1 was originally supposed to conclude the series.
The cool scene found McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) in the hospital's chapel, and crossing paths with la CGI recreation of the late actor Jack Lord.

But why was the scene not saved for the series finale?
Hawaii Five-0 showrunner Peter M. Lenkov has revealed the reason for the scene not being saved is that he realized the show was not ending soon following the sixth season.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the originally envisioned closing scene for Hawaii Five-0‘s series finale actually aired back in September 2016.

Sitting alongside the pews, McGarrett struck up a conversation with a stranger nearby, whom he later learned had also been a cop in Hawaii.

In the fall of 2010, Peter M. Lenkov took a big gamble, re-envisioning a well-remembered police procedural from the past for new generations.
It was a bet that paid off big time as Hawaii Five-0 said "Aloha" after 10 seasons on Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 22.
Reboots are a tricky business as creators are messing with viewers' sense of nostalgia.
Five-0 is undoubtedly the most successful reboot. Other top-notch efforts include One Day at a Time, Battlestar Galactica, Charmed, Roswell, Dynasty, and Lost in Space.
Consigned to the scraphead of history are such messes as Charlie's Angels and Bionic Woman.
Lenkov, previously known as executive producer of CSI: New York and 24, made all the right moves with this reboot.
He kept the gorgeous scenery of Hawaii as the backdrop for exciting action sequences.
He kept the iconic theme song, one of the two best themes in TV history.

The long-running crime drama is set to end with its current 10th season. The series will bow out April 3 with a two-hour finale.
The show is a reboot of the 1968-80 series created by Leonard Freeman, which starred Jack Lord as Honolulu detective Steve McGarrett. The current series, which stars Alex O'Loughlin as McGarrett, will end up running for nearly as long as its predecessor — 10 seasons vs. 12 for the original.

Katrina Law (The Oath) has joined the upcoming 10th season of CBS’ hit drama Hawaii Five-o as a new series regular.
Law plays Quinn Liu, a former staff sergeant with Army Cid recently demoted for insubordination. After an explosive collision with Five-o on a case involving veterans, she soon becomes a loyal ally to the team that always has valued integrity over playing by the rules. Sharp-tongued in several languages, Quinn has a deep understanding of military culture, a mysterious past, and a deft ability to match wits with McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin).
“We are thrilled to have Katrina join the 10th season Hawaii-Five-o as a series regular,” executive producer Peter Lenkov said. “She dazzles as Quinn, the team’s newest recruit, and viewers are going to love seeing how she first encounters McGarrett and Danny. If you know the show well, you’ll be feeling some déjà vu.”

With fans clamoring for a crossover episode between CBS procedurals Hawaii Five-0, Magnum, P.I., and MacGyver, the co-creator of the three series says it may just happen.
Peter M. Lenkov, the creative mind behind the reboots, sat down with the casts of the shows Saturday afternoon at PaleyFest in Los Angeles.
After the actors dished on their characters, moderator Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight asked the day’s burning question — when will there be a crossover?
“This is a question I’ve never heard before,” Lenkov joked. “We talk about it a lot in the room, how to do it. I think there’s a way to do it, it’s just logistics.”
While Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum, P.I. are shot in Hawaii, MacGyver is filmed in Atlanta, making a crossover a bit of a challenge.
Still, Lenkov told Saturday’s audience of loyal fans, “We’d love to make that work out.

Fans of both Hawaii Five-0 and Hawaii Five-o are due for some déja vu when the current CBS series pays homage to the original — as seen in this exclusive photo from the Season 9 opener.
To mark the franchise’s 50th anniversary, Five-0 is retelling the story from the 1968 pilot, which ran in two parts and was titled “Cocoon.” As such, showrunner Peter M. Lenkov got to share a writing credit with the late Leonard Freeman, creator of the original series.

Being a popular TV star can be a double edged antennae; great, steady income and national (sometimes international) fame. But the downside is you can become so popular that as a performer, what you’re known for is all you become known for, and it can be difficult to step beyond people’s perception. Such is the case with Elizabeth Montgomery, as the Bewitched actress took on the somber lead role in The Victim (1972), an entertaining little mystery that showed a welcome serious side to the star.
Originally broadcast on Tuesday, November 14th as an ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, The Victim would have to go up against Hawaii Five-o and NBC’s own movie night; and while Jack Lord always won out, ABC had the particular market cornered for mystery and horror with The Victim being a fine addition to their roster.

The rare drama series to focus on Latino characters — who are female and/or queer, no less — “Vida” only somewhat lives up to the color, richness and excitement maybe promised by its title (the Spanish feminine noun for “life”). Starz certainly deserves a big gracias for disrupting Hollywood’s #SoWhiteMale status with this scrappy half-hour, which showrunner Tanya Saracho has said reflects her mission to introduce “the brown queer perspective” to TV. Sporting vibrant East La La Land locations and piquant touches of magical realism, the first six episodes ultimately unfold like an arthouse-y pastiche of Showtime hits “The L Word” and “Shameless” and Netflix’s Cuban-spiced reboot of “One Day at a Time.” Meaning it’s got to find its own way if it’s going to stick around.

Kingsman pulls the leg of the James Bond series - but how have the 007 films put across the relationship between Britain and the USA?
When Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service exploded into cinemas in 2015, it gave the iconic James Bond franchise much the same irreverent treatment that the director's previous Mark Millar adaptation, Kick-Ass, gave to comic book movies. Reviews focused on how the film recontextualised the familiar 007 tropes of guns, girls and gadgets through the lens of class, identity and that notorious final bum note.
In the sequel, Eggsy and the Kingsmen run up against a crime syndicate known as the Golden Circle with a little help from their American cousins, the Statesmen. It neatly shows us that American iconography plays much the same role for their opposite numbers, that liquor-themed codenames will stand in for Arthurian monikers, and most accurately of all, that...

Case in point: 1973’s A Cold Night’s Death, starring Eli Wallach and Robert Culp, a two man tour de force pitting man against man against the fragility of the human mind. Plus monkeys!

Additionally, that touching CGI tribute to the original Hawaii Five-o‘s Steve McGarrett, Jack Lord, should go down as the defining startup for the season. While one chapter closed, a new foe emerged. Peter Lenkov never expected to become TV’s King of the Remake.
But in a season crawling with series reboots and do-overs, Lenkov’s new take on “MacGyver” for CBS stands out in at least one specific way: The showrunner has successfully done it before.
In recent years, the broadcast networks have had very little luck in taking old titles and giving them a fresh coat of paint. Lenkov, however, unlocked the code with “Hawaii Five-o.”
“Part of it is luck, and part of it is really knowing the property very well, and knowing what ingredients to add to bring it back to life, what worked and didn’t work,” said Lenkov, who admits that even he’s surprised that “Five-o” has already made it to Season 7.
He didn’t expect to do it again. But after CBS shot a “MacGyver” remake as a pilot last season, the network turned to Lenkov for his notes.

Ahead of American Ultra's arrival in UK cinemas, here's our pick of the 25 finest, sneakiest secret agents in film...
Operatives. Spies. Moles. Infiltrators. Secret agents go by many names. In fact, Britain's national security agency doesn't even call them agents - they're covert human intelligence sources, or simply “officers".
Whatever we choose to call them, secret agents lead necessarily furtive and obscure lives - so obscure that most of what we know about them is defined by what we've seen and read in books and movies.
During the Cold War, the image of the secret agent as a well-groomed sophisticate in a suit proliferated all over the world, and even in the high-tech landscape of the 21st century, that image still stands - just look at such movies as Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and, of course, the Bond franchise. But secret agents can come in many other guises,...

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' box office: Bigger domestic flop than expected? Before I address the box office debacle of Warner Bros.' The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I'd like remark upon the fact that 2015 has been a notable year at the North American box office. That's when the dinosaurs of Jurassic World smashed Hulk and his fellow Halloween-costumed Marvel superheroes of Avengers: Age of Ultron. And smashed them good: $636.73 million vs. $457.52 million. (See also: 'Jurassic World' beating 'The Avengers' worldwide and domestically?) At least in part for sentimental (or just downright morbid) reasons – Paul Walker's death in a car accident in late 2013 – Furious 7 has become by far the highest-grossing The Fast and the Furious movie in the U.S. and Canada: $351.03 million. (Shades of Heath Ledger's unexpected death...

Critics' year-end lists are beginning to trickle out and that's a good thing for a number of movies vying for your attention. One benefactor may just be Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice." The critically acclaimed film (which is almost un-categorizable) also hits Los Angeles and New York on Dec. 12. That might be just enough time to pump up the film's deserved awards season prospects.* *And it has already been named one of the top 10 films of the year and earned Anderson a Best Adapted Screenplay honor from the National Board of Review. As I noted after first seeing "Vice" earlier this month, if anyone deserves a nomination for this movie it's Josh Brolin. The "No Country For Old Men" star is simply superb (and hilarious) as the increasingly off-kilter Lapd detective Bigfoot Bjornsen, a man who has a very passive aggressive relationship with the film's "hero," Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix...
