Spire Animation Studios, the newly formed feature animation studio co-founded by award-winning producer Brad Lewis (“Ratatouille”) and industry entrepreneur P.J. Gunsagar has tapped animation pioneers from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks and Blue Sky Studios to join its team.
Among the creative team are Shawn Krause, Creative Director of Animation and Story, Michael Surrey, Creative Director, Story and Animation, Ted Mathot, Creative Director of Development and Karen Disher, Creative Director of Development.
Lewis said, “We have been trying to get a team together from a variety of places where I’ve worked with to do something creatively special.” He adds, “What gets me up in the morning is ‘let’s do something with a team that is really enthusiastic and behind it.’”
Spire Animation hopes to spearhead original and culturally relevant stories that resonate with audiences worldwide, rather than offer reboots. For Lewis, that means partnering with both best-in-class talent and emerging creatives to tell those stories.

Awards are reliable bellwether of best picture Oscar triumph.
1917 boosted its best picture Oscar prospects on Saturday (January 18) after it won the Producers Guild of America’s (PGA) top film award at the 31st annual PGA Awards at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
By claiming the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the First World War thriller capped a fine two weeks that has brought 10 Oscar nominations, two Golden Globes, and a DGA nod for Globe winner Sam Mendes, who was knighted in the 2020 New Year Honours list.

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. Read on for more, as well as the rest of the winners… PGA not only went for 1917 in their top category, but they rebuffed the Academy with their Documentary prize, going with Apollo 11, despite it not being nominated in Best Documentary Feature. In the Animated field, they picked Toy Story 4, arguably keeping it the slight Oscar favorite in Best Animated Feature.

Sam Mendes’ World War I drama “1917” got a boost in its bid to win the Best Picture Oscar when it took home the top prize at the 31st annual Producers Guild Awards Saturday night. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, has historically been a strong indicator of which film will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 30 times.
Last year, Peter Farrelly’s controversial racial drama “Green Book” took the top PGA trophy before going on to win the Best Picture Oscar. This year “1917” bested the other eight films competing for the top Oscar at the PGAs, as well as a tenth film, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” — which settled for an Original Screenplay Oscar slot.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Mere moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual PGA Awards. This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures) are almost always Oscar finalists in Picture. This seems likely to hold true again this year. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The Best Picture nominees that the Academy cites will likely come from this bunch, though not all will make it, obviously.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

Golden Globe winners “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” have both been nominated for the Producers Guild of America’s top film award, along with a slate of nominees that also includes “Parasite,” “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story” and “Little Women.”
Rounding out the PGA list, which is typically an accurate predictor of Oscar success are “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and the most-nominated film in Tuesday morning’s BAFTA nominations, “Joker.”
“Parasite” is the second film not in English to be nominated in the last two years, after “Roma” last year. The only other non-English films to be nominated in this century were 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” 2006’s “Babel” and 2007’s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”

Well, at long last, it looks like How To Train Your Dragon 3 – which will be subtitled The Hidden World – is about to take flight and spread its wings. It’s been a long time coming, too, as the last movie flew into theaters back in 2014 and it’s only now that we’re really getting our first look at the much anticipated threequel. But the new trailer is finally here and you can see it for yourself up above.
Promising another vibrant, colorful adventure, the teaser certainly has us excited, as we see Hiccup and Toothless (who’s as adorable as ever) come together once again for what appears to be a journey to discover their true destines. Living up to the previous entries in the franchise will certainly be tough, but if this new promo is any indication, it certainly looks as if we’re in for a real treat,...

Given how successful the series has been up to this point, it’s pretty surprising that it’s taken so damn long for How To Train Your Dragon 3 to materialize and spread its wings. Granted, animated films often do have long productions, but still, the last movie flew into theaters back in 2014 and the threequel isn’t set to arrive until 2019. That’s a five year gap, which is a long time for any movie franchise – animated or not.
Still, interest in the How to Train Your Dragon property remains high and fans are eager for any and all tidbits they can get their hands on as the long wait continues. Thankfully, it looks like the studio is about to lift the lid on what they have planned for us, as earlier today they dropped the very first poster for the threequel, inviting us into a hidden world.

Even without a feature release this year, DreamWorks Animation (led by President Chris deFaria) will be very active at the 42nd Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 11-16). Director Dean DeBlois will present work-in-progress footage on June 14 from the final chapter in the “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, now titled “The Hidden World.” The first DreamWorks feature to be distributed by Universal Pictures, “The Hidden World” (produced by Brad Lewis and Bonnie Arnold) opens March 1, 2019.

For generations, Lightning McQueen has ruled the roost.
It’s a reputation one can trace all the way back to ’06, when Owen Wilson’s spunky red stock car won over the hearts and minds of Radiator Springs by helping the retiring vet Strip “The King” Weathers over the finish line, sacrificing his hold on the Piston Cup in the process. That momentum carried over into Brad Lewis and John Lasseter’s Cars 2 five years later, where Lightning completed his transition from rookie to bona fide champion.
But when you’ve reached the absolute peak of stock car racing, there’s only one direction to go: down. And that’s exactly what lies in store for Lightning McQueen in Cars 3, Brian Fee’s animated threequel that’s set to introduce a fresh wave of budding racers on to the circuit. Among the fresh faces (grills?) is Jackson Storm, a...

WaterTower Music has announced the February 3 CD and digital release of the soundtrack to the new animated adventure “The Lego® Batman Movie,” one week before the film opens in theatres on February 10. The collection features new music from Dnce, Alex Aiono, Patrick Stump, Oh, Hush! feat. Will Arnett and Jeff Lewis, Kirsten Arian, Justin Tranter, and more. The album also includes 16 of the film’s score cues by Grammy-winning composer Lorne Balfe, and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) on drums.
The film’s director Chris McKay describes Balfe as “one of the most talented and versatile people I’ve ever met.”

"Monsters University" director Dan Scanlon has come onboard to take the helm of a third movie in the "Cars" franchise at Disney and Pixar according to Pixar Planet.
The site noticed a recent official blog post which lists Scanlon as co-director on the film, but there's no other name listed. No formal announcement about Scanlon being on the project has been made by the studio.
Despite the critical drubbing and soft box-office of the first two films, the "Cars" franchise has been a massive success for Disney in terms of tie-in merchandising, the first film alone raking in $10 billion in merchandise sales in the first five years since its release.
John Lasseter and Joe Ranft helmed the first, Lasseter and Brad Lewis helmed the second. The third is currently targeting a June 16th 2017 release.

Twenty years ago Pixar Animation Studios released their first feature-length film: Toy Story. It was the first completely computer generated film out there and changed everything. Every other studio making animated films has been trying to catch up to them, not only in terms of technological achievements but in crafting stories that make everyone old and young laugh, cry, and thrilled. Not every single film they've made has been a home run, but their track record thus far has been pretty impressive. This year's release Inside Out is no exception, arriving as the fifteenth feature in the animation house's stable. Given the occasion, I've taken it upon myself to rank Pixar's first fifteen features to settle once and for all what is the best and worst from the studio. I contemplated bringing in the short films that precede each of their features, as many are just exquisite if not better than the films they accompany,...

Well, it seems your favorite toys are returning.
Disney CEO Bob Iger, whose rocky rise to power is brilliantly detailed in James B. Stewart's must-read account of the Michael Eisner years "DisneyWar," just announced during an earnings report that "Toy Story 4" would be hitting screens on June 16th, 2017. And what's more: original "Toy Story" director John Lasseter is returning to helm the new film.
There are, of course, a couple of things to keep in mind here.
First of all, the "Toy Story" gang (led by Tom Hanks's Woody and Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear) haven't exactly been absent from our hearts. Since "Toy Story 3," the supposed swansong, was released in the summer of 2010 and made us all cry like tiny babies, the characters have taken center stage in three short films ("Hawaiian Vacation" and the painfully hilarious "Small Fry" in 2011 and "Partysaurus Rex" in 2012) and two half-hour...

They're talented, individual, but could, possibly, do with a bit of editorial guidance. Could these directors use a boss, we wonder?
Odd List
In truth, we're a bit frightened about this one. Several times in pub/coffee shop/cider drinking in the park conversations, we've chatted about film directors who perhaps have got too powerful, that they seem to be able to get their own way without having someone to call bullshit on them - be it a good boss, or a very good friend that they trust and listen to.
This can be a very good thing. After all, we want film directors to be free to tell their stories. We don't want studio suits calling the shots. And some directors use their independence wondefully well, without losing what bought it to them in the first place (so, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Robert Zemeckis and such like).
Still,...

In recent history we've seen John Lasseter step in and take away directorial reigns from Brad Lewis on Cars 2 and then Brenda Chapman was ousted from the director's chair on Brave and replaced by Mark Andrews with Steve Purcell given a co-director credit. Many would argue these are two of Pixar's worst films and in my opinion Brave is their worst film. Well, it seems there are some issues in the house of Pixar yet again. A couple weeks back Disney held their D23 Expo and featured new concept art and information for their upcoming film The Good Dinosaur, which was to be directed by Bob Petersen who was given a co-director credit alongside Pete Docter on Up. However, Petersen wasn't on hand to present the footage that was shown, instead a newly announced co-director, Peter Sohn, and producer Denise Ream handled those duties. The Good Dinosaur was originally...

Mike Markowitz made it big on the writing front last year with the ridiculously funny Horrible Bosses and after a long career of writing various TV shows, Markowitz is joining the animated realm of cinema, as Deadline reports he has been hired to write the second animated feature for Tradition Studios.
Brad Lewis (Cars 2), the former Pixar Pdi/Dreamworks filmmaker-producer-actor, has been set to direct the feature, which is being kept under wraps while being in development at the studio’s San Francisco facility. However, we do know that this project will be the follow-up to the company’s first animated feature, The Legend of Tembo, which was directed by Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams and penned by William Schneider.
Lewis most recently directed the underwhelming Cars 2, and he also produced Pixar’s Ratatouille and Dreamworks’ Antz. With their past work taken into account, I think that Markowitz...

Sometimes the world of film criticism should stand back and look at itself: when Cars 2 was released to cinemas it was met with a tidal wave of derision, as critics queued up to put the boot in on what was seen from the outset as a project unworthy of the animation studio’s efforts.
But that line of thinking fundamentally misses the point of Cars and its sequel: in contrast to the majority of Pixar’s other titles, which appeal to broad audiences across age divisions with their adult themes and issues, Cars is arguably the only property that is intended only as a children’s film. One need only examine the sales figures relating to Cars merchandise sales, and the profile of those buying to realise that it remains a compelling enough property among the youngest audience band.

Chicago – “Cars 2,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, is disappointing in 1,000 ways. It would be a lackluster family film no matter who made it but the fact that the most important movie studio of the last twenty years, Pixar, produced a film this boring, uninspired, offensive, and just plain horrendous is nearly soul-crushing. This critic counts “Wall-e,” “Finding Nemo,” and all three “Toy Story” movies among the best films ever made. It’s hard to believe “Cars 2” came from the same production company. It’s barely even the same genre.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
The first “Cars” was a bit dull, especially in comparison to other Pixar films, but it looks like a masterpiece compared to this mess. The first film was about important issues like valuing friendship over winning and not identifying yourself purely with competition. It had its issues, but it was a generally sweet film that was...

Cars 2 3D Blu-Ray Combo Pack Walt Disney Home Entertainment 2011/Rated G/Running Time 106 Mins List Price: $49.99 – Available November 1, 2011 Pixar Animation's seventh feature, 2006's Cars was perhaps their first film that didn't work for me. I didn't hate their tale of a hotshot race car who hits a detour and ends up stranded in a small town, but it was perhaps the first time I felt disappointed by their efforts. A few years earlier, when the project was announced, it seemed like a weird premise – an animated film set in a world populated by anthropomorphic motor vehicles – but I always saw John Lasseter as a genius and if anyone could pull it off, it would be him. Or so I thought. Lasseter made an entertaining and visually impressive feature, yet the story was lacking and to the experienced moviegoer it felt like a remake of the 1991 Michael J. Fox vehicle Doc Hollywood.

For whatever reason, my kids didn’t want to see Cars and we even missed it on cable and home video. When word spread that it was good but not Pixar’s best feature, there wasn’t a lot of desire among the family to check it out. The same feeling arrived this June when the inevitable sequel, spurred by enough box office revenues and massive merchandise success, arrived. We empty-nesters just couldn’t muster the desire to go see the film, despite an engaging trailer and a love for all things Pixar.
The home video release of the movie this coming week remedied this void in my Pixar knowledge. The movie is entertaining enough, moving at, appropriately enough, a racing clip; it reintroduces the established characters, moves them to a new setting and gives audiences (and merchandisers) some new players. Hilarity ensues for 106 minutes and the film itself is...

Cars 2 had everything going for it. It was a sequel to a massively successful film from a company that has successfully executed sequels before. The main man in animation, John Lasseter, helmed the project and co-directed it with Brad Lewis. Too much of a sure thing is sometimes just that and Cars 2 proved this with Pixar.s first critical failure. To rally from the financial woes of such a crappy film, Disney Home Entertainment is using its superb marketing skills. On November 1, the company will release Cars 2 on 3D Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, DVD and Movie Download. To sweeten the deal, the Cars 2 release will offer all kinds of packages with many different special features in the hopes one of them will get your engine roaring. 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack Cars short .Air Mater. A few movies we haven't yet said much about. In the interest of saying something -- more will definitely follow in the case of The Help and The Rise of the Planet of the Apes both of which I suspect we'll be talking about thru Oscar season -- here's two handfuls of words for each.
2011... the year of the put upon maid?
The Housemaid (Im Sang-Soo)
in which a nanny/maid contemplates her own Fatal Attraction
10Wr: South Korea continues its Actressy roll. Classy/Trashy, expertly shaped. B+
The Help (Tate Taylor)
Maids in the South tell their provoactive stories to a feisty young writer
10Wr: Ungainly in telling yet super compelling. Well seasoned cornpone acting. B
Transformers Dark of the Moon (Michael Bay)
giant fucking robots return so that visual f/x may occur and billions may be made
10Wr: Surprisingly coherent explosiveness. But debris clears immediately (i.e.

Beginners (15)
(Mike Mills, 2010, Us) Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent. 105 mins
Mills doesn't iron out the hipster-auteur quirks here – a subtitled dog, freeform photomontages, felt-tip illustrations – but he puts them to the service of an authentic drama. McGregor is an La loner whose widowed father (Plummer) came out as gay and enjoyed a few hedonistic years before his death. Not your standard indie baggage, this warm, smartly told story deals with it sincerely, and gets the sweet/sad balance just about right.
Horrible Bosses (15)
(Seth Gordon, 2011, Us) Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis. 98 mins
Clearly aiming for the post-Hangover fratcom market, this sees three guys' plan to off their bosses go awry from the outset, with occasionally amusing, but often crude consequences. Colourful big-name cameos gloss over some political dodginess.
The Big Picture (15)
(Eric Lartigau, 2010, Fra) Romain Duris, Marina Foïs, Niels Arestrup. 115 mins
Duris proves his leading man capabilities amply...

Cars 2 Directed by: John Lasseter & Brad Lewis Written by: Ben Queen (screenplay), John Lasseter, Brad Lewis & Dan Fogelman (story) Starring: Larry the Cable Guy, Owen Wilson, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Eddie Izzard, John Turturro Cars 2 is all about Mater. Mater is Larry the Cable Guy. You do the math. Where Pixar's other efforts feature uncommonly compelling cartoon leads, the sequel to Cars revels in giving a shallow, annoying character the spotlight. With a laser focus squarely on the kiddie set, this washed up fish-out-of-water spy flick is bereft of the adult inclusive humor the animation giant is known for. Toss in a nonsense plot about Nascar espionage, and — Oh, just go ahead and shoot me now. Cars is widely considered the black sheep of the Pixar oeuvre. Taking place in its own bizarro universe wherein cars are surrogates for human beings, it tampered with the "Secret life of...
