A whopping 37 years after the original “Ghostbusters” movie hit theaters and 32 years after the sequel, it’s finally time for the third narrative installment, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Reprising their roles in Sony’s highly anticipated film, which was delayed multiple times by the pandemic, are Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, with the late Harold Ramis appearing via archival footage. Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd are the fresh cast members who drive the current story. Will audiences flock to “Ghostbusters III” when it opens on Friday?

Harley Quinn is ready to make amends. After decades demolishing Gotham and decimating its citizens alongside the Joker, she’s seeking forgiveness. That’s where we find the anti-hero in Future State. The two-issue event ends this week and sets up a new status quo for the Maid of Mayhem. Den of Geek chatted to Harley writer Stephanie Phillips about Future State, Infinite Frontier, and how Silence of the Lambs influenced some of the best moments in Harley’s recent crime-fighting adventures.
Future State: Harley Quinn introduced us to a Gotham where heroes are outlawed and a militarized police force known as the Magistrate rules supreme. Within this world Harley is a woman imprisoned, literally. That is until Jonathan Crane asks for her help to catch the criminals of the city. It’s a recognizable setup, one that Phillips took directly from a classic movie.
“It was funny,” Phillips laughs.

In the last half decade, D.J. MacHale has noticed a significant uptick in interest in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the Nickelodeon anthology series he co-created nearly 30 years ago. Though he spent much of his career as a television writer, director, and producer, he’s had a successful second act as an author of sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural novels. When fans of his novels put it together that he also produced all 91 episodes of the original run of the Nickelodeon classic, he started receiving an outpour of appreciation.
“Suddenly this wave of social media came to me about Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” MacHale told Den of Geek. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t speak to someone in some way, shape or form about [the show].”
Are You Afraid of the Dark? premiered on Nickelodeon on Oct. 25, 1991. Each episode started with a member of “The Midnight Society,...

If Stargirl has succeeded at one thing with its finale–and it achieved a lot–it was introducing some very exciting new concepts and characters for season two. The biggest hint at where we’re headed next is the late-stage tease of a new Injustice Society member who brings the promise of danger, mystery, magic, and maybe… time travel. Say hello to the Shade.
During the Golden Age of comics, the DC Universe was filled with weird and wonderful characters who shaped the massive comic book company into something magical and otherworldly, far from the street level noir heroes that the industry is now known for. Essentially, in 1942 DC was a technicolor world away from the gritty realism that we’ve come to connect with the Dark Knight and his fellow DC heroes. It was during this fantastical period that Stargirl‘s newest antagonist was...

Stargirl is the sort of superhero show that has no right to be as good as it is. A story about a teenager discovering a glowing, sentient staff and fighting supervillains with names like “The Gambler” in a costume that’s little more than a midriff-baring Captain America rip-off should, in all honesty, be a joke. Therefore, the fact that it’s actually one the best DC television series currently on the air may come as a surprise to many, but this little show has proven over the course of its first season that there’s basically nothing it can’t do.
A perfect mix of heartfelt optimism and deep cut fan service, Stargirl soars because it trusts both its characters and its audience. This is a show that encourages its viewers to embrace complexity and to hold often competing concepts together in the same moment for maximum narrative impact.

“I know you’re in there, Eclipso.”
With these words burgeoning supervillain Cindy Burman has introduced a whole new world and threat to Stargirl. After killing her father and attempting to defeat Courtney and co. it’s clear that the Dragon King’s daughter is keen on getting revenge, which is lucky as she’s just invoked the name of a deep cut character who could be a way of introducing an entirely new supernatural layer to the series.
Get ready to meet Eclipso.
1963 was a massive year for comics. At the House of Ideas, the X-Men, the Avengers, and Iron Man were bursting from the pages, changing the future of comic books and ultimately Hollywood forever. Meanwhile, their Distinguished Competition saw the Silver Age as a time for reinvention, taking classic characters like Green Lantern and The Flash and turning them into legacy characters.

Stargirl Episode 13
Stargirl’s first season, on the whole, is one of the strongest ever attempted in the DC television universe. There’s so much to love about this series, from its sunny, optimistic vibe and charming characters to its willingness to push boundaries, trust its audience, and make bold storytelling decisions. That its Season 1 finale doesn’t entirely stick the landing is probably expected – honestly, most of the Arrowverse shows never do finales terribly well anyway – but the emotional moments are as top-notch as ever, and “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” does a decent enough job of tying up loose ends and putting some intriguing new pieces in place for Season 2.
The sudden return of Joel McHale’s Sylvester Pemberton will probably drive the bulk of conversation following this episode – whether he’s the real Starman, back from the (presumed) dead,...

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Episode 15
Broadly speaking, there are three types of Legends of Tomorrow episodes. There are the gag episodes, where the entire thing is built around one bit. There are the experimental episodes, with countless examples, the most recent being last week’s Interdimensional Cable episode.
And there are the plot episodes, that move the season’s serialized story along. The first batch are hit or miss depending on how the one bit of the episode lands, but they generally hit. The second batch are what makes Legends Legends, something even the cast agrees with — even when they don’t work, they’re still interesting, and they almost always work spectacularly.
The plot episodes are where the show has traditionally struggled, because the strengths of the show are the characters and relationships they’ve formed, and historically, plot episodes on...

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Episode 14
Legends of Tomorrow has a tendency to overdo it. On everything. The jokes, the melodrama, the amount of show they try and cram into each episode. “The One Where We’re Trapped on TV,” the penultimate episode of the show’s phenomenal fifth season, is maybe the most jammed episode they’ve ever done, but it’s also absolutely perfect. This might be the best episode the Legends team has ever done.
We left last week with everyone dying, and Charlie reuniting with her Fate sisters to cut a deal. This week, we get the results of that deal. Mona is working in Atropos’ ministry, responsible for rewriting history to remove any reference to rebellion or free will in a 1984-esque dystopia and spending her free time watching the Fates’ streaming service/indoctrination network, while Gary wears...

Harley Quinn reverts back to her (and the show's) worst tendencies in "The Final Joke."
This Harley Quinn review contains spoilers.
Harley Quinn Episode 13
There really couldn't have been a more appropriate title for the final episode of Harley Quinn. After three months of solid humor, violence, and appropriately foul-mouthed jokes, the season came to a rather disappointing end as Harley Quinn (temporarily) fridged Poison Ivy, killing off one of the best parts of the animated adult series as well as cutting off any potential closure around the relationship at the heart of the show at the proverbial roots.
Since the very first episode, Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Ivy (Lake Bell) have been the best thing about the DC Universe series. That's not a bias but simply because it was built into the core of what the show was about: Harley emancipating herself from the Joker (Alan Tudyk...

Harley Quinn Episode 11 Review
With Birds of Prey being released this weekend, it seems only right that the newest addition to DC Universe's adult animated series is the most action packed yet. Opening with a dark slickness that seems more suited to the much lauded DC animated universe movies, "Harley Quinn Highway" is an interesting look into the mind of Poison Ivy that does more to define her relationship with Harley than we've seen so far this season. It also includes a highway named after Harley Quinn which is about as silly and fun as it sounds.

Harley Quinn breaks out another deep-cut character in an ep that showcases the talented cast and introduces the first true flaw in the show.

Oh, DC, what are we going to do with you? Harley Quinn is seven episodes in and has so far been an entertaining take on the titular anti-heroine. In all the blood, violence, cursing, and stellar animation throughout Harley Quinn you might have missed the fact that Christopher Meloni is voicing Jim Gordon in DC's animated madhouse. Taking a solid recurring trope from its streamer-sibling Doom Patrol, this episode takes place predominantly in Harley's brain as her friends dig around her subconscious--which even looks like the white room set from Doom Patrol--attempting to fix our protagonist after she has a severe physical and mental breakdown whilst trying to find the perfect lair for the motley crew. If you love Star Wars: The Mandalorian, you should be reading the Lone Wolf and Cub manga that inspired its main storyline.
This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.
A lone man stands against a failing Empire. By his side is a small infant, seemingly harmless and completely vulnerable without the warrior at its side. If you've been watching Disney+'s epic slowburn space western The Mandalorian, you might think that we're talking about episode two of the show, which centers on the titular hero and his new charge, a young alien who appears to be the same species as Master Yoda. But, in fact, we're describing the setup of Lone Wolf and Cub, one of the longest running and most iconic manga series of all time and a huge influence on the unexpectedly sweet story at the heart of the first live-action Star Wars series.

G. Willow Wilson looks back at her time writing Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman has been inspiring readers and saving the world since 1941. Over the decades the Themysciran Princess has been a pillar of the DC Universe, her adventures and bravery a moral compass in an often bleak, grim, and gritty world. Like all of comics' longest running characters, Diana Prince has been helmed by many different creative teams, and most recently writer G. Willow Wilson took the reins of the character alongside an impressive roster of artists like Cary Nord, Tom Derenick, and more. As Wilson exits the title to head over to the world of Sandman and the Dreaming, Den of Geek sat down to talk to the co-creator of Ms. Marvel about her time writing the iconic hero and the lessons that it taught her.
