Exclusive: Things are coming back around again for Selling Time, the supernatural thriller at 20th Century Fox. D.J. Caruso is signing on to direct, and he will oversee a new draft by Dan McDermott that is being written in hopes that Will Smith will star in the film. John Davis and Jennifer Klein will produce with McDermott. Though he still has not committed to starring, Smith has long been interested in playing the lead role in the thriller about a man who sells chunks of his life in an attempt to relive the worst day of his life so that he can change a tragedy. I feel like I have relived this project several times; I first wrote about it when McDermott sold it as a spec to Fox 2000 while he was president of DreamWorks Television in 2001. Smith has been intrigued for almost that long. There have been numerous incarnations...

Exclusive: Doug Liman has signed with CAA. Liman had followed his longtime agent Adam Kanter to Resolution, but has returned to the CAA fold. Liman, who left his TV business at CAA, will be repped in all areas. The helmer, whose big credits include Mr. And Mrs. Smith, most recently completed Edge Of Tomorrow, the science fiction film for Warner Bros that stars Tom Cruise. He’s next committed to direct the recently retitled Sony Pictures historical film The Summit, which is slated to begin production in mid-March. That is the Sheldon Turner-scripted story of George Mallory, the famous British mountaineer who rallied a nation with his attempts to conquer Everest before his Australian rival George Finch. This has gone a couple different ways in casting, but now it looks like Tom Hardy might well play Mallory (he was first choice but temporarily dropped due to scheduling) and that Luke Evans might play Finch.

Costello has a pretty cool story - the way most people get going in Hollywood is to first intern, then be someone's assistant for a couple of years, then hopefully move up the chain. Costello interned and then was the assistant to writer-producer Sheldon Turner (who wrote X-Men: First Class) and producer Jennifer Klein (Pearl Harbor) - they are now producing Epic Fail. "The Bourne Identity" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" director Doug Liman has joined "Everest", an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel "Paths of Glory", at Sony Pictures says Deadline.
Archer's book deals with the mystery of George Mallory's 1924 ascent of Mount Everest. The mountain climber made several attempts to reach the peak, but he and partner Andrew Irvine never returned from their June 1924 climb.
In 1999, Mallory's frozen body was found near the summit on the North Face, and debate has raged ever since about whether he was actually on his way down or up. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to make a successful ascent of the peak in 1953.
Sheldon Turner came onboard to pen the script back in 2009 while Jennifer Klein is producing. Liman will supervise the next draft by Turner with the intention to direct the film which is said to be a priority at the studio.

Some people have dreams that are so outrageous that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Percy Fawcett, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Sir Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong are among such individuals. But what if one man had such a dream, and when...

We may be entering a Golden Age of TV Horror. We’ve already told you about the development of Frankenstein and The Munsters for NBC and of course we will soon be freaking out to American Horror Story on FX. Now comes news that ABC is joining the potential creepfest by picking up a new drama based on the Jekyll and Hyde story.
The original novella, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1886 and has since been adapted in countless ways (personal favorites are the Spencer Tracy and the Bugs Bunny treatments).
THR has now reported that the new version will be called simply Hyde and will be written by Up in the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner:
Hyde will revolve around Grant Hyde, a doctor with an eye condition who experiences bizarre side effects after attempting an experimental treatment...

Exclusive: Frequent collaborators Sheldon Turner and Jennifer Klein are launching a company together. The company, Vendetta, will be based at ABC Studios with a first-look deal. Under the two-year pact, Up In the Air co-writer Turner will write one script himself and he and Klein will shepherd projects with other writers. Turner and Klein will executive produce all projects developed under the deal, which sprung from the relationship they developed with ABC and ABC Studios this past development season when the two executive produced a Vice President drama project titled Number Two, which Turner co-wrote with Shaun Cassidy. Turner and Klein are expected to bring a feature mentality to their development and shepherd big-event shows with feature writers. In addition to Number Two, Turner and Klein have sold together as producers Broken to FX, which Turner wrote; drama Michael Chance to NBC, written by Julie Golden; and half-hour comedy The...

The revolving door that is the cast of Sheldon Turner’s directorial debut seems to be finally slowing down. Beginning last year, both Colin Farrel and Eric Bana were in talks for By Virtue Fall with Hurt Locker’s Nicolas Chartier producing. Then it was speculated that Farrel was off the project with Jeremy Renner in to take his place. Just after The Tracking Board mentioned some new developments on the thriller, now 24 Frames is confirming and reporting both those actors and Chartier are out, but Bana remains and will be joined by James Spader, Ryan Phillippe and Carla Gugino. The independent film has now been set up with Bill Block’s international sales company and financier Qed, though no specific person behind the project, including producer Jennifer Klein, will publicly confirm any of the above details. Gist: Few details surrounding By Virtue Fall’s screenplay, also penned by Turner,...

Yesterday we reported that Eric Bana was very much on board for Sheldon Turner's By Virtue Fall. Today THR reports that James Spader, Carla Gugino, Ryan Phillippe, Treat Williams and Kim Coates have joined the cast. Bana is already attached to play one of the two leads.
As of last year, both Bana and Colin Farrell were interested in starring and producer Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker) was set to produce. Since then, Farrell has dropped out and Chartier says he's no longer involved with the project. The good news is that Bana is still involved and said, "he hopes to make it his next movie after he finishes shooting "Blackbird," the thriller he's currently making with Olivia Wilde."
Qed International (District 9, W.) looks to be handling foreign sales and putting up at least part of the money for production. The film tells the story of a pair...

The San Diego Comic Con is a giant tangle of new publications, and it can be difficult to sort out the good from the bad. One title I came across on the last day of the con (the only time I got to wander the show floor at my own pace) was Freakshow, from writers David Server and Jackson Lanzing and artist Joe Suitor. And I'm glad I did because, for one, I enjoyed the book, and having read it I've got a better frame of reference from which to talk about the fact that I Am Legend and Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich has optioned the comic. He'll write the script, and it may become his directorial debut. Variety says that Protosevich is working with Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) and Jennifer Klein to produce the film. The trade quotes a very enthusiastic Protosevich talking about the comic: In...

Protosevich, who was the screenwriter for Marvel’s upcoming feature film Thor will write the script for Freakshow and will produce alongside Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) and Jennifer Klein (Pearl Harbor) and may make his directorial debut with Freakshow as well.

The series will hit shelves in January and was created by Jackson Lanzing and David Server, with artwork by Joe Suitor. Ape Entertainment will be selling advance copies of the comic book at San Diego Comic-Con this week.
Protosevich is currently writing the theatrical adaptation of BioWare‘s hit video game Mass Effect.

Though the adaptation of Marvel's Norse god comic hero Thor hasn't even made it's Comic-Con debut (stay tuned for our coverage), let alone unveiled any trailer, screenwriter Mark Protosevich is already moving towards his next project. Variety says the writer has chosen Freakshow as his next comic book adaptation and he's even looking to potentially direct this as well. The story in the comic follows five young people who are turned into mutants by a cataclysmic chemical explosion and must decide whether to use their newfound powers to save the city or exact revenge on those responsible after the world's only superhero is killed. Wow. In addition, Protosevich will be producing with Sheldon Turner (writer of Up in the Air) and Jennifer Klein (producer of Pearl Harbor). The three-issue miniseries won't be published until next January, but will be promoted by Ape Entertainment at this week's Comic-Con with advance ...

Nicolas Chartier's Voltage Pictures is setting up the financing and producing with Jennifer Klein and Turner. While both Farrell and Bana sparked to Turner's script and want to do the film, the fragile nature of mounting a two-handed character indie drama makes this one no slamdunk. A week ago, newbie scribe Jason Sullivan had to be driven to pitch meetings because his car couldn't go more than 45 mph. Now, thanks to Columbia picking up his untitled comedy project, he is ready to go shopping for a new ride.
Sullivan, who studied screenwriting at Loyola Marymount, has been writing spec after spec since graduation while holding down several jobs at once. At one point, he held five jobs, including apartment manager, script reader and a freelance writer for a company that hired holders of masters degrees to write spam e-mails that would get through filters. One fortuitous job was as an assistant to "X-Men Origins: Magneto" writer Sheldon Turner.
Producer Jennifer Klein was over at Turner's one day and recounting a dinner she had with her husband, who complained how he missed out on a seminal moment in childhood by not attending summer camp.
Sullivan was there too. As an obsessive fan of summer camp movies like "Meatballs," he saw movie potential and days later came up with a treatment and structure. The project revolves around three friends in their 30s who realize their lives are incomplete because they never went to camp, so they rent out a camp and invite other adults to join them.
Turner and Klein, who have several projects around town, came up with a plan to take Sullivan's pitch to market, though one complication was the unreliability of Sullivan's car.
"If you go over 45 miles per hour, it dies," Sullivan said. "If you make a sharp left turn, it peters out. And at stop signs, it needs to be revved all the time or it dies. People think I'm ready to race them in my '97 Saturn."
Sullivan ended up having to be ferried to some of the pitch meetings, which were a blur of bottled water and small talk to the nervous newbie.
Columbia bought the project in a six-figure deal. Sullivan said he still can't believe he is being paid to write.
"It feels fantastic, but I'm afraid it's part of an elaborate scam, that I'm being grifted," he says. "I grew up obsessed with summer camp movies, and the fact that one day I might be able to go see one that I wrote blows my mind."
As to what he will do with his paycheck, he joked, "I'm going to pimp my car."
Sony's Doug Belgrad and Jonathan Kadin are overseeing the project.
