When Blue Lights debuted on BBC One last year, it was favourably compared with Line of Duty. The comparison made sense. Both dramas deal with drug-dealing organised crime gangs, and touch on the under-funded reality of PR and stats-led UK policing. Both love an armed response unit and a cliffhanger. They’re both filmed in Belfast (though only Blue Lights is set there) and take place in fictional police sections where the dialogue gets a bit ‘sit rep on the double o-b’ spilled-Scrabble-tiles at times.
There is though, a major difference between the two – and it’s not just Blue Lights being about frontline response policing (uniforms in patrol cars) and Line of Duty being about anti-corruption detectives (suits in undercover vehicles). It’s to do with warmth.
To listen to commissioners, warmth is what audiences are currently craving. It’s what put Richard Osman on the bestseller lists for his Thursday Murder Club books,...

In the previous episode of Tokyo Vice, season 2, Ishida took his last breath after getting fatally shot by two assassins. Tozawa became a suspect, but he voluntarily showed up at the Tokyo Pd and showed Detective Nagata a photo of him with the other Yakuza members in a meeting during the time when Ishida’s murder took place. Samantha, however, confided in Jake, telling him about the assassins with red-eyed tattoos on their wrists. Jake did some digging and informed Katagiri about the tattoos. Jake faced a troubling situation at his office when Eimi allowed Kurihara to publish an article on Samantha, accusing her of Ishida’s murder. Jake took a few days off and flew back home to Missouri. In the closing scene of the sixth episode, Katagiri returned home and found Shinjiro, one of the two assassins who killed Ishida, waiting for him. As Shinjiro asked the detective to help him,...

Popular 90s Irish boy band Boyzone are gearing up for a fresh round of concerts as the group reunite in a joint business venture. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Ronan Keating and Paulina Rubio's When You Say Nothing At All, directed by Xavier Gens. Before he became one of the key figures of New French Extreme cinema (a wave of particularly brutal French horror movies in the late nineties and early aughts), and one of the prime examples of what they call vulgar auteurism, Xavier Gens was a music video director. His highest profile video was the one for Ronan Keating and Paulina Rubio's version of When You Say Nothing At All, which was already a hit as a solo-version for Ronan Keating. The version of the video that was directed...

Singer-songwriter Liam Gallagher has spoken about the moment that his brother, Noel Gallagher, quit Oasis and the events that led up to that point and how he felt once Noel had walked out on the band.
The 51-year-old singer-songwriter said that his “world caved in” after the bust-up which Noel, 56, claims was the catalyst for him leaving, though Liam has disputed what happened and that he was the reason why Noel couldn’t perform as part of Oasis any more, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The band, which was formed in the 1990s, came to an end after Noel and Liam clashed backstage at the Rock-en-Seine festival in Paris, during 2009, which the elder brother has pinned squarely on the shoulders of his younger sibling but Liam has now challenged the reasons for him quitting, saying that his behaviour hadn’t changed during their time together in the band.

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Shania Twain loves harmonies — especially as a budding, young musician. In her memoir From This Moment On, the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer mentioned specific bands that inspired her love for “multipart harmonies” and “complex vocal arrangements,” including the Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac.

As stated in From This Moment On, Twain began singing at about 3 years old, even doing what she later described as vocal warm-ups. The songwriter began accompanying herself on guitar when performing live.
She looked up to well-known bands of that time period, specifically noting their complex harmonies. As a fan of harmonies herself, this artist “couldn’t get enough” of some of the world’s biggest bands.

Beyoncé gave a concert performance for the first time since 2018 at an exclusive event in Dubai.
The “Break My Soul” vocalist appeared at the Atlantis the Royal hotel on Saturday (21 January) for an exclusive show.
Originally teased by the hotel to be part of “a weekend where your dreams become your destination”, Beyoncé’s set consisted of 19 songs spanning her career, including a surprise duet of “Brown Skin Girl” with her 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy.
However, she did not perform any material from her highly acclaimed 2022 album Renaissance.
Beyoncé’s performance at the luxury Dubai resort has been deemed controversial by some, due to the United Arab Emirates having strict homosexuality laws.
Meanwhile, the artist’s latest work has been hailed as a tribute to queer Black and brown people. The Independent has contacted a representative for Beyoncé for comment.

Craig Revel Horwood has questioned Hamza Yassin’s Strictly Come Dancing win.
The judge shared his candid views on the subject while discussing the BBC competition’s latest series on Magic Radio.
Wildlife presenter Yassin was announced as the latest winner of Strictly in December 2022, and he beat Helen Skelton and Fleur East to take home the Glitterball trophy.
However, Horwood believes that, while Yassin “did an absolutely spectacular job”, East should have won the series.
“Fleur, can I say this on Magic, darling? She was robbed,” he told presenters Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott.
“There you go – that’s just me,” he continued.
“I mean, I absolutely love Fleur. For me, in the final, anyone could have won. I think Hamza did an absolutely spectacular job and he had all the audience behind him, which is really important as well.

International pop sensation Ronan Keating says the Covid pandemic brought him closer to his family, and gave him time to write new music, though he yearns to get back on the stage and perform live.
"I got to spend so much time at home with my family and my children, it has been wonderful. I have written a lot of music, which has been nice to be back in the studio in the house -- writing and that's been wonderful," Keating told Ians while talking about how the pandemic impacted him and his life.
"We have learned a lot about ourselves, and learnt a lot about the people that are important to us in our lives," he added.
The one thing he misses is going on stage to perform.

Singer Ronan Keating walked down memory lane and recalled how he and fellow Boyzone members spent the last night together.
His former bandmate Stephen Gately had passed away on October 10, 2009, and Boyzone fans remembered how his bandmates slept on the church floor with his coffin the night before his funeral, reports the sun.co.uk.
Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham had held an overnight vigil at St Laurence O'Toole Roman Catholic church so that he wasn't on his own for a moment. They brought sleeping bags into the church and slept beside his coffin.
Keating told Sky News that it was a "beautiful, amazing experience".
Ronan Keating added, "The four of us decided to stay with him on the Friday night in the church. All of us are so happy that we did it. It was our last night together as a five piece, our last real night together.

Mike Tindall knows a little something about royal weddings. The former rugby player married Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips in 2011, and while their wedding didn't have quite the fanfare of Harry and Meghan's, he's still been through many of the same things, including the tricky situation of introducing his family to the royals. On Friday, Mike did the rounds of TV and radio stations to promote his celebrity golf tournament, which raises funds for The Cure Parkinson's Trust and the Matt Hampson Foundation. Of course, discussions quickly strayed from golf to the royal wedding and what it's like to marry into one of the most famous families in the world.
Luckily, Mike was happy to share some stories. On Good Morning Britain, he praised the royal family for the way they welcomed him, saying, "The best thing about the royal family is that they're so lovely, they'll spot the...

Sometimes, there's a lot more than what meets the eye. During Sunday's 2018 BAFTA Film Awards, viewers watched host Joanna Lumley introduce Jennifer Lawrence as the "hottest actress on the planet." Soon after, The Hunger Games star would reply, "That was a bit much, but thank you Joanna." While some viewers watching at home were quick to critique the moment and make fast assumptions, Jennifer set the record straight the morning after and insisted there was no drama or shade. "Everybody thought that I was being rude," the actress told Ronan Keating on the Magic Radio Breakfast show. "But to be fair, I couldn't have just walked out after she was...

When we see World War 2 movies based on the British experience, normally we witness the events of the Blitz and see the hardship people went through. Another Mother’s Son takes us to Nazi occupied Jersey and the true story of a mother, and a Polish escaped prisoner of war.
Another Mother’s Son is the story of Louisa Gould (Jenny Seagrove), who when called upon to hide a Russia prisoner of war who has escaped, agrees to let him into her house. Calling him Bill (Julian Kostov) she looks after him, and tries to give him some normality back into his life, while all the time hiding him from not only the enemy in uniform, but also those closer to home.

Jenny Seagrove excels in this true-life tale of a mother who hides a fugitive Russian in the Channel Islands during the second world war
At first, there is a bit of a familiar taste to this true-life wartime tale. But it becomes something tougher. The film is, moreover, an interesting reminder of something that the British prefer to overlook assomething it doesn’t quite fit into the Churchillian narrative of never surrendering: the Nazi occupation of British territory – the Channel Islands. It wasn’t just the French who suffered the misery of occupation, and the sordid nightmare of people pursuing petty grudges with anonymous letters to the Nazi authorities. Jenny Seagrove gives a fierce and capable performance as Louisa Gould, a Jersey woman who hid a fugitive Russian slave-worker, nicknamed Bill (Julian Kostov). John Hannah, Nicholas Farrell and – unexpectedly – Ronan Keating take supporting roles as islanders. The film persuasively suggests...

The majority of films that linger over the horrors of the Second World War tend to focus on the soldiers, the young men who left home to serve their country, and risk their lives on a daily basis. It’s somewhat more infrequent to delve into the lives of those back at home, struggling to get by, constantly afraid their loved ones will be killed, while also vying to survive back on home soil. It’s here Christopher Menaul’s profound drama Another Mother’s Son is set, based on the true story of Louisa Gould.
Set on the Nazi-occupied island of Jersey, Gould (Jenny Seagrove) runs the local grocery store, selling rationed food to her neighbours. An emotionally affecting and inspiring trailer for the biographical film Another Mother’s Son has been released. The film stars Judge John Deed actress, Jenny Seagrove as Louisa Gould – one of the first recipients of Her Majesty’s British Hero of the Holocaust Awards in March 2010.
Louisa Gould was a shopkeeper in Jersey during the Second World War, in charge of handing out rations to those in the only British territory to fall under the control of the Third Reich. After learning of her son’s death in battle she takes under her wing a young Russian Pow who escaped a German Prison camp despite her family’s concerns. Singer/songwriter, and ex-Boyzone member, Ronan Keating plays her brother Harold Gould. He is no stranger to acting following his role as Guy in the West End show, Once, which earned him rave reviews.

Adolescent agony meets anaesthetised acting in this po-faced example of a familiar teen horror trope
Creeping on to DVD and streaming platforms almost exactly two years after its premiere at the 2014 Cannes film festival, When Animals Dream sets out its stall at a languid pace in keeping with a delay of that length. In a small Danish fishing village of Agger, the film finds 16-year-old Marie on the cusp of adulthood, having all but outgrown the home she shares with her stoic father and mysteriously catatonic mother. After finding a job at a fish-processing facility and a boyfriend who looks like Ronan Keating, Marie seems to have amassed all the key hallmarks of adulthood, and that’s to say nothing of the thick coat of hair growing all over her body.

Second World War drama begins UK shoot; first image revealed.
Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating has joined the ensemble cast of period drama Another Mother’s Son, which also includes Jenny Seagrove, John Hannah, Amanda Abbington, Peter Wight and Susan Hampshire.
Principal photography is underway on the film, which will shoot for six weeks across Somerset and the South West of England.
Another Mother’s Son is set during the Second World War, when the island of Jersey was occupied by the Nazis.
The film is based on the true story of Louisa Gould, who took in an escaped Russian Pow and hid him over the course of the war, amid growing tension as it became clear that British wartime leader Winston Churchill would not risk an assault to re-capture the island and the community began to fray under pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty.
BAFTA-winning Chris Menaul (Summer In February) directs a screenplay by Jenny Lecoat.

★★☆☆☆When done right, nothing gets people out of their seats and dancing down the aisles (or in their living rooms) than a well-executed sing-a-long. In recent years, thanks to the success of Mamma Mia!, the musical has had something of a renaissance. Mark Lamprell's Goddess (2013), an Australian-produced effort based on the stage show Sinksongs, is the latest to try to grab the hearts of musical lovers. In it, despondent housewife Elspeth (Laura Michelle Kelly) is fed up of life. She's been denied her dreams of becoming a due to her husband, James (former Boyzone star Ronan Keating), continuously called away in his job as a marine biologist (!?), leaving her to care for their twin sons.

Adapted from screenwriter Joanna Weinberg’s stage play Sinksongs, this Mark Lamprell musical Goddess begins with a swooping shot of our leading lady Elspeth Dickens, imitating The Sound of Music as she runs through the fields. A nod, instantly, to one of the films that illuminate the genre – though it also works as a slight reminder that this nonsensical piece merely pales in comparison.
Elspeth (Laura Michelle Kelly) is a dedicated stay-at-home mother to her two young boys, almost single-handedly raising the troublesome duo while her husband James (Ronan Keating) works away from home. To keep herself entertained, she sets up a webcam in her kitchen, broadcasting her when cooking, cleaning – and singing. As more and more visitors tune in, her reputation builds and career opportunities come her way. Suddenly the tables are turned, as she prepares to set off for work, and James returns home to look after the kids.

Stay-at-home mother-of-two Elspeth Dickens (Laura Michelle Kelly) escapes the monotony of living on a remote Australian farm by singing about her humdrum life on a kitchen web-cam. However, her internet laments about her sorry lot go viral, bringing her to the attention of advertising bigwig Cassandra (Magda Szubanksi). A bottom-flashing Ronan Keating brings aboard some twinkly-eyed Irish charm as Elspeth's absentee sea-going, whale-watching husband.

Mel B was confirmed as the fourth X Factor judge this morning - but it's not going to be her first go at starring on a Simon Cowell show. Not only did she pop up as a guest on The X Factor UK back in 2012, but she was a fixture of the Australian version show, too - and she's on America's Got Talent.
With that in mind, we figured that we could probably work out what kind of judge she's going to be by poring over old footage (or, er, spending all morning on YouTube.) Read on for 10 things we can expect when Mel B joins The X Factor...

Ronan Keating has dismissed reports that he will be appearing in the next series of Celebrity Big Brother.
The Boyzone star took to Twitter amid mounting speculation that he would follow his bandmate Keith Duffy into the famous compound.

The rumours surrounding Keating appeared to stem from a light-hearted tweet he wrote a few weeks ago which included the phrase "day 2 in the Big Brother house" - but was actually in reference to a detox plan.
While the new series of Celebrity Big Brother won't begin until this summer's 'civilian' version has ended, rumours about who could be making their way into the Borehamwood bungalow have been circulating for some time.

To play one of the nation’s best loved characters from a children’s TV show is no easy task – and Stephen Mangan discusses the pressure that comes with taking on the role of Postman Pat, ahead of the character’s debut on the big screen.
Mangan also tells us of his delight in working on something his young sons can watch and enjoy, while explaining the difficulties in bringing Pat to the silver screen to dramatic effect, given the inherent, good nature of the man. He also explains what attracted him to take on this role, and compares his singing voice to that of Ronan Keating’s, who provides the vocals for Pat’s fledging musical career in the movie.

When adapting a children’s TV show that has an established, expectant audience in already in place, to fully succeed you need to ensure that you remain faithful to the tone and spirit of the much-loved series, and to enlarge cinematically with minimum contrivance. While Postman Pat’s debut on the silver screen may deliver in both aspects, it remains a somewhat alienating production as far as the parents are concerned, with little in here to appease all members of the family.
In Mike Disa’s endeavour, Pat’s journey does feel greater, with more dramatic implications to the narrative, to warrant this big screen release. Pat (Stephen Mangan), along with his trusty pet cat Jess, is determined to take his wife on a holiday to Italy. Pat (Stephen Mangan), along with his trusty pet cat Jess, is determined to take his wife on a holiday to Italy. To raise some funds, he decides to enter into a national talent contest, to show off his unique singing ability, and go head-to-head...

Postman Pat is hitting the big screen, with Episodes actor Stephen Mangan and Boyzone star Ronan Keating voicing the cheery postie when he's speaking and singing, respectively.
To celebrate, Digital Spy caught up with the pair to find out all about weird fan mail and demand they sing the famous Postman Pat theme tune for our amusement.
Plus, with the film seeing Pat enter a Britain's Got Talent-esque competition, we got Stephen to relive his worst ever audition (it involved being half-naked up a ladder) and chatted to Ronan about a possible move from X Factor Australia to the homegrown version...

Children's TV favourite Postman Pat delivers the feature-length goods in a bonkers adventure that sees him rise to fame on a TV talent show. But while he's on the road to stardom, a sneaky mail company executive replaces him back in Greendale by a robotic clone who isn't going to win popularity contests. Stephen Mangan voices Pat (with Ronan Keating on singing duties) for a simple but daftly effective kiddie-distracter that keeps plenty in its sack for grown-ups.

The new Postman Pat, Stephen Mangan, chats to us about the film, about children's telly, and on a darker sequel...
Interview
The new Postman Pat (as heard in Postman Pat: The Movie, due in cinemas this Friday) has two voices. When he's singing, he magically switched to Ronan Keating. When he's not? He's Stephen Mangan. And the day after the film's premiere, we had a chat with the man himself...
You're Postman Pat.
I know! Can you believe it?
It's a surreal thing to have that claim. There are fewer Postman Pats in the world than there are James Bonds.
That's true, I hadn't thought of that. You make a very good point!
Ken Barrie was the original Postman Pat of course.
That's right.
A friend of mine met him outside a pub once, and in everyday conversation he sounded nothing like him. But in a second, he switched that famous voice on.

Ronan Keating is in awe of Simon Cowell, branding the Britain's Got Talent boss a "very impressive man" and revealing that he "would love" to join The X Factor UK.
The former Boyzone star - who is currently a judge on the Australian version of X Factor - described Cowell as "a great businessman... through and through".
Speaking to Digital Spy about his role in Postman Pat: The Movie, which features a spoof version of the Syco chief named 'Simon Cowbell', Keating said: "Simon's always been very nice to me.
"I worked with Simon in the early years when I signed Westlife to his label, so I've known him for years. He's a very clever man. He knows what he's doing.
"The empire that he's built is very impressive. He's a great businessman, really, through and through."
Keating added that although his commitments to X Factor Australia ruled him out...

The much beloved Postman Pat finally makes his way to the big screen. But is it worth the wait?
It's better than the trailer, let's start there. After all, the big screen debut of Postman Pat suffered from an early promo that suggested the film was not one to look forward to. As it turns out, there are merits to the Postman Pat movie, which at times feels as much like the beneficiary of a Doctor Who script conference as a stint watching children's telly. But ultimately, for all the nods to other movies (Faster Pussycat Kill Kill being the most bizarre), and for all the ideas, Pat falls just a little flat when it matters.
It starts promisingly enough. We meet Pat, now voiced by Stephen Mangan, as he goes about his work in Greendale, courtesy of a really good, extended opening shot. All the regulars are there, with the gentle,...
