A version of this story about the production design of “The Irishman” first appeared in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
Production designer Bob Shaw knew the territory when he signed on to do Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” Not only had he worked with Scorsese on “The Wolf of Wall Street” and helped design the iconic organized-crime series “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” he was from South Philadelphia, the main setting in “The Irishman.” He even had relatives (his grandmother’s brothers) who owned a lingerie shop that didn’t actually sell lingerie. “Apparently, they were bookies,” he said.
But “The Irishman” was still a mammoth undertaking, with 295 different locations and 28 different sets. “It called for a tremendous level of detail,” Shaw said. “Marty is very detail-oriented and likes to be as accurate as possible. He likes a lot of references — if you think something is appropriate,...

You're going to hear references to Gravity a lot this weekend. One critic says Robert Zemeckis' The Walk "does what Gravity did for outer space" while Ridley Scott's The Martian is not only an outer space-set drama, but could possibly challenge Gravity's October opening weekend record, which was set this same weekend two years ago. However, those Gravity references may be short-lived if neither film is able to live up to the success the seven-time Oscar winner found two years ago. We'll begin with The Martian, a film based on Andy Weir's highly successful, self-published sci-fi novel, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars. I caught the film at the Toronto Film Festival and could immediately tell it was going to be a moneymaker. It's a crowd-pleaser of the highest sort, but that $55.7 million October opening record set by Gravity looms large. In The Martian...

I have written previously in this space about my unabashed adoration of Howard Stern, but even casual fans know that the King of All Media's skillful long-form interviewing style is one of his most enduring qualities. He conducts hard-hitting interrogations that feel like casual conversations, leading normally guarded celebrities to offer revelations and opinions they would probably never utter in another forum. This year alone, he has helped draw out newsworthy bites from a number of big stars, and with 2015 more than half over, I thought I'd recap the wildest, most revealing quotes that have come out of Studio 69 in the past six months and change (with attendant clips). Here we go... 1. Jason Alexander tells the real story behind Susan's "Seinfeld" demise Date: June 3 Behind-the-scenes dish on famous TV shows never gets old, and Alexander's tidbit about actress Heidi Swedberg (who played George's ill-fated fiancee Susan) was particularly juicy. From Sugarland breakup rumors to Taylor Swift's country ditch and Blake Shelton's ego, no topic was off limits when Jennifer Nettles appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live! Thursday night. The singer, who released her solo album, That Girl, last year, joined Scandal star Tony Goldwyn on the couch opposite show host Andy Cohen for a half-hour of a lot of laughter. The three engaged not only in conversation but also in competition, as Cohen tested Nettles' mettle when it came to making up song lyrics on the spot.

Iggy Azalea paid tribute to cult teen classic Clueless in her recent music video for 'Fancy'.
The Australian rapper appears as Alicia Silverstone's iconic character Cher in the video, which was released online last week.
As stars continue to be inspired by the movie almost 20 years on, we take a fond look back at the cast and what they went on to do after Clueless:
Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Alicia Silverstone played seemingly shallow socialite Cher - famously branded "a virgin who can't drive" and "hymenally challenged" - in the high-school adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Prior to Clueless, Silverstone's credits included ABC comedy-drama The Wonder Years and a number of Aerosmith videos. The film propelled her to further fame, and she went on to star in Joel Schumacher's 1997 movie Batman & Robin, crime-comedy Excess Baggage (1997) with Benicio Del Toro and Christopher Walken, and romantic drama Blast from the Past (1999) opposite Brendan Fraser.

Jim Parsons seemed game for anything during his first stint hosting "Saturday Night Live" -- too bad he didn't get the material he needed to make his turn memorable, or at least more memorable than being the worst "SNL" episode of the season.
Watch the skits below and judge for yourself.
Cold Open: "Ellen"
It's always nice when the show starts with a topical pop culture-related skit rather than a stale political one, so Kate McKinnon's reliable Ellen DeGeneres impression was a great one to trot out on the eve of her Oscar hosting duties. Host Jim Parsons played everyone's favorite Olympic commentator Johnny Weir, and while the physical resemblance was amazing, it was hard to believe it was anyone other than Parsons sitting there. The problem is that Parsons' speaking cadence is so distinctive that it's hard to imagine him as anyone else. "My mother is a schoolteacher...

Saturday Night Live didn’t skewer the movies themselves. Instead last night’s show used them as jumping off points for wouldn’t-it-be-funny-if sketches. One imagines 12 Years A Slave auditioning white actors who were inappropriate for the roles. Another has a sour critic from an 1860s newspaper panning this year’s nominees and film classics. A third had cute kids from an acting camp playing Wolf Of Wall Street, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Her, and Dallas Buyers Club. The show also poked fun at Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres. Here you go:...

Saturday Night Live this weekend was hosted by the Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons, who did a fair enough job of shedding the persona of the geeky character he’s best known for playing.
'Saturday Night Live' Recap
For the cold open on Saturday, SNL treated viewers to Kate McKinnon reprising her take on Ellen DeGeneres. Much like when McKinnon debuted her impersonation, the jokes focused on the talk show host’s dancing and talking about herself – as “I’m Ellen,” once again served as a catchphrase.
Breaking from tradition again, SNL brought out the host prior to his or her opening monologue. In the cold open, Parsons played Olympic figure skater-turned-Olympic host Johnny Weir, rocking leather pants and a fabulous pompadour.
I’m Not That Guy
Parsons’ opening monologue tackled the major concern that many had with the actor taking up hosting duties – the perception that he’s Sheldon Cooper.

The 86th Academy Awards provided an easy running theme for last night's post-Seth Meyers return of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jim Parsons. That focus aided the Big Bang Theory star as he gamely tried to break out of his Sheldon Cooper mold, only referencing the hit show in a musical opening monologue on the theme of "I'm Not That Guy." "I'm not a scientist. I do not speak Klingon. I do have a male roommate, but I assure you that it's a vastly different arrangement," he declared.

Someone has uploaded one of the best scenes from The Wolf of Wall Street in which Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort experiences the delayed effect of several Lemmon Quaaludes and while it is undoubtedly ripped from a bootleg copy of the film likely making the rounds on the Internet, Paramount would be wise to let this one run its course rather than having it removed from the YouTubes. After DiCaprio made a comical guest appearance on "Saturday Night Live" last night (watch below) as his Wolf co-star Jonah Hill hosted it instantly went viral and reminds everyone Wolf is out in the ether, begging to be consumed, but it's clips like this that will remind Academy members and others just how good DiCaprio is in the film. The 2014 awards show season has already been especially exciting, and last night (January 19) the Producers Guild of America Awards added a new twist to the Oscar race.
Both “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” were honored with The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, making the first tie for the category in PGA history.
All the more impressive is the fact that producers from “American Hustle,” “Nebraska,” “Blue Jasmine,” “Captain Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Her,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Saving Mr. Banks” were also up for the accolade.
“Frozen” producer Peter Del Vecho took home the Animated Motion Picture award while “Breaking Bad” snagged Best Drama Series and “Modern Family” won the Best Comedy Series.
Meanwhile, there were a number of actors there to support the people behind the camera including Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

There is really only one big surprise in today's announcement of the 2014 Producers Guild Award nominees, that is the snubbing of Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis, which I assume gave way to Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club. The rest of the theatrical nominees are pretty much to be expected, including the likes of 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Gravity. It seems the recent dust-up over The Wolf of Wall Street had no bearing on the nominees as it was included and yet again Her remains a part of the race as the one film I think could attempt to prove spoiler in a couple of the major Oscar categories. I've included the theatrical, animated and television nominees directly below along with a slew of other nominations the org plans on handing out. We know you’re excited to watch the ball drop and ring in the new year, but you wouldn’t want to say goodbye to 2013 without first reviewing pop culture’s high points (Gravity! Orange is the New Black!), low points (Big Brother, What Would Ryan Lochte Do?), and, uh, divisive points (pretty much anything involving Miley Cyrus and/or the word “twerk”), would you? Of course not!

Nearly 30 years after Orson Scott Card published the best-selling Ender’s Game, the Hugo-Award winning science-fiction novel receives the full Hollywood treatment from the studio behind The Hurt Locker and Twilight. Those two films are perhaps relevant, because Ender’s Game tells the story of young teens, led by Hugo’s Asa Butterfield, who are tasked with the very-adult responsibility of going to war to defend mankind.

Audiences chose “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” over Oscar hopefuls this weekend as Johnny Knoxville’s raunchy comedy laughed its way to an opening estimated at $32 million. The R-rated road-trip romp from MTV Films and Paramount took the top slot from 3D space epic “Gravity” and Tom Hanks’ “Captain Phillips.” The awards contenders, which skew toward an older audience, had finished first and second for the past two weekends, and “Gravity” had won the last three. But this week Knoxville’s sleazy geezer tale – the first broad comedy in theaters since summer’s “We’re the Millers” – stole the show. Also read: ‘SNL’: Watch.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who delighted audiences as Golden Globes hosts in January 2013, have closed a deal with NBC and Dick Clark Productions to return to host the ceremony in 2014 and 2015. The 30 Rock creator and Parks and Recreation star (and former Weekend Update co-anchors on Saturday Night Live) turned out to be exactly what audiences were looking for. Their fresh comedy did not rely on crude jokes and gags (here’s looking at you, Ricky Gervais and Seth MacFarlane) and their dynamic chemistry helped them play off of each other comfortably (unlike Anne Hathaway and James Franco).

Saturday Night Live opened with two untethered astronauts calling Houston in a "Gravity" sketch. However, with the government shut down, only a couple janitors were in the office to provide suggestions and take a message: "Janet from Space called and I'm going to say this is very important." Bruce Willis seemed to call it in for a passable monologue. The last time he hosted was 24 years ago. He said, "If you had told me back then there were going to be six "Die Hards"… I might have said that seems a little too many." In lieu of much else to say, Willis showed off his bluesy harmonica prowess. The vibe veered towards high-school-talent-show. The actual, hired musical guest Katy Perry carried off her anticipated performance of "Roar" with the requisite bubble-gummy enthusiasm. The show began with a last-hour quality skit: a black ops team forms a new plan with an action hero (Bruce Willis,...

It doesn’t seem possible that Bruce Willis has only hosted Saturday Night Live one time in his lengthy career (back in 1989). There have been about 16 Die Hard movies to promote since then, though Willis doesn’t seem the type of guy who needs to break his neck promoting things. He’s Bruce Willis, that tends to be enough. Maybe that’s why no one really knew what to expect out of this show. While Willis is definitely a funny guy, he is a consummate straight man. Grand Theft Auto V is what it looks like when a suicidal architect builds a skyscraper. The game is beautiful and it is empty. I don’t mean that as an insult. The game might actually be about emptiness; it regards the human condition with less sentimentality than Werner Herzog. I can’t help but recommend Grand Theft Auto V, because I’ve played it for at least fifty hours. It is probably the best-made Grand Theft Auto game ever, and it is also the most soulless, which probably explains why it is so much fun. If this sounds paradoxical,...

From what I heard, this is bringing back the term “roller coaster” when talking about the movie going experience. I’ll check it out, I haven’t gone back into space since Armageddon. Steve Buscemi rides a bomb in this movie too I hope.
Runner Runner – Rt (19%) – Trailer
Sorry, not buying Affleck as a sinister bad guy. This paint-by-numbers thriller has me sleeping already; see you on TBS guys.
TV Notables:
Saturday Night Live (Saturday, NBC) – Miley Cyrus hosts and “performs”. Watch them kiss her ass and let her indulge us with some self-deprecation skits. Twerking drinking game anyone?
The Simpsons (Sunday,...

Will "The Pacific" sweep the technical awards or will the miniseries share some of the love with its sister HBO program, the moving biopic "Temple Grandin," starring Claire Danes?
It's Saturday, Aug. 21 and time for the Creative Arts Emmys, held a week and a day before the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast. It's the awards event that honors the people behind the scenes who deserve recognition, but apparently didn't make the cut to be on the already overflowing live event.
The winners:
Best Casting of a Drama Series: "Mad Men"
Best Casting of a Movie/Mini: "The Pacific"
Best Casting of a Comedy Series: "Modern Family"
Best Prosthetic Makeup for Series, Movie or Mini: "The Pacific"
Best Makeup for Movie or Mini (Non-Prosthetic): "The Pacific"
Best Makeup for a Single-Camera Series, Movie, Mini or Special (Non-Prosthetic): "Grey's Anatomy" for episode "Suicide Is Painless"

Usually, I don't stretch the Twitter Report back past the 24-hour mark, but last week's shot of C.B. Cebulski with Paris Hilton from the Marvel/Cbldf bowling fundraiser produced an unprecedented industry crossover. (Paris Hilton, of course, being her own industry.) It didn't quite make Twitter in time for last Friday's installment, but it's worth the wait, believe me.
Meanwhile, down in Baltimore, Erik Larsen praised this year's Baltimore Comic-Con for sticking to comics and not having any media guests in attendance. Jason Aaron, who was also in attendance, seemed to enjoy himself, and tweeted a celeb encounter after the show with former NBA star Manute Bol. Check out what they had to say below along with a custom action figure by "Hack/Slash" creator Tim Seeley and Dan Slott's "Rock Band" wishlist.
It's all in the Twitter Report for October 12, 2009.

Jennifer Aniston celebrated her 40th birthday with a lavish party on Saturday night. The former "Friends" star - who turns the landmark age on February 11 - celebrated four days early with a star-studded bash at her Beverly Hills mansion.
Jennifer invited close friends including Courteney Cox and husband David Arquette, Oprah Winfrey, Sheryl Crow, Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson to join her and boyfriend John Mayer at the party.
According to sources, the actress' flirty behavior quashed rumors she has split from the "Gravity" singer.
An insider said: "She looked hot and she and John looked really happy together."...

As we said in our Grammy Predictions, we have a love/hate relationship with the Grammys. But hey, we love music, so we're watching to see what happens. Could be a big year for Lil Wayne (did you see his interview with "Miss" Katie Couric?). Could be a controversial night if Coldplay's alleged Joe Satriani rip-off grabs some hardware ("Viva La Vida" by Coldplay and Satriani's "If I Could Fly"). But plenty of great artists are nominated (M.I.A., Allison Krauss/Robert Plant, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Daft Punk, Brazilian Girls....we could go on), so as always, it'll be worth watching, especially for the performances. Unlike the Oscars, where the show is pretty much all about the host, the Grammys are all about those live performances (remember when Beyonce stole the show with Prince back in 2004?). Hang with us and add to the conversation in the comments!

Some of the Grammy Awards predictions of our forums' moderator Darrin "DoubleD" Dortch have been included in earlier blog posts that pitted his views against David "Guru" Shnelwar's while they forecasted the victors of the Grammy record, song, album and new artist of the year categories. Now let's look at each pundit's Grammy predictions on a solo basis. Here are DoubleD's noodlings on the top races.
Album Of The Year
Favorite – "Raising Sand," Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
Possible – "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends," Coldplay
Robert Plant never won a Grammy while with Led Zeppelin, and he has only two Grammys to date. Krauss is a Grammy favorite (and a past winner here for the "O Brother" soundtrack) and "Raising Sand" got fantastic reviews, so I think Plant/Krauss will easily prevail here. If they lose, it’ll be to Coldplay, which will surely win multiple Grammys this year.
