Looks aren’t everything (or so our mums tell us) but when there’s a brand new Doctor in the Tardis, they become pretty important. Tradition tells us that each Doctor has their own signature style – from Tom Baker’s iconic stripey scarf to Peter Davison’s cricket-and-celery combo, and Matt Smith’s “cool” bowtie – giving us clues about what kind of Doctor they’ll be.
So what will Ncuti Gatwa’s fifteenth Doctor be like? Details are scarce so far, but his fashion-forward costumes give us plenty of interesting hints…
No More Unchanging Doctor Costume
Finally, it looks like the Doctor is going to take the occasional shower.
Past Doctors have either stuck rigidly to a single costume – like William Hartnell’s suave, Victorian-era get-up or Colin Baker’s coat of many colours – or gone for a consistent look, like David Tennant wearing the same geek-chic suit in different colours,...

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed nominees for its 22nd CDGAs, which celebrate excellence in film, TV, and short form costume design. Winners will be announced at a ceremony January 28 at the Beverly Hilton to be hosted by Mindy Kaling.
The guild previously announced that this year’s Cdga honorees include Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan, (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).
This year marks the first under new rules on the TV side in which designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.
Last year, Black Panther‘s Ruth E. Carter, Crazy Rich Asians’ Mary E. Vogt and Sandy Powell for The Favourite were among the film winners. Carter went on to take the honor at the Oscars.

When the Thirteenth Doctor returns to our screens on New Year’s Day, she’ll have a new accessory in the form of her rainbow scarf. Understandably, Doctor Who fans went crazy when the Time Lord’s enhanced look was revealed in a promo photo for the episode, titled “Resolution,” as it recalled the multi-colored scarf famously worn by Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor throughout the 1970s. But was the scarf chosen as a deliberate homage to him?
Not quite, as the addition of the accessory to the ensemble was a total fluke and is actually something that was owned by one of the crew. Showrunner Chris Chibnall revealed to Doctor Who Magazine that production designer Arwel Wyn Jones wore it on set, as it was bought for him by his wife, Claire Pritchard, who also works on the show as the series’ make-up designer.
“[Arwel] wore it around the production.

Recently, rumors got fans worrying for the future, as it was reported that Doctor Who season 12 might not arrive on our screens until 2020. The story came from tabloid sources, so we should’ve taken it with a pinch of salt, and now it seems that claim has been well and truly refuted as someone close to the show has confirmed that work on the next season of the sci-fi series has already begun.
Costume designer Ray Holman updated his online CV recently to mention the fact that season 12 is currently in pre-production. He also took to Twitter to say that many of the TV shows on which he works are due to shoot a new season in 2019, and listed among them was Jodie Whittaker’s second run as the Thirteenth Doctor.
This supports some digging done into the situation by Radio Times. In contrast to The Mirror’s claims that...

Every time Doctor Who casts a new actor for the part of the Doctor, fans can’t wait to find out what they’ll be wearing. The fashion choices of every version of the Time Lord say a lot about what type of character they’ll be and also provide cosplayers with a whole new outfit to copy. For the Thirteenth Doctor, in particular, her costume consists of a rainbow-striped top, cream coat and blue culottes.
So far, it’s been well-received by fans for being feminine yet androgynous, eccentric but practical. But how did the costume come together? Well, Jodie Whittaker revealed to Radio Times that it was very much a collaboration between herself and the show’s costume designer. In fact, the actress even provided the inspiration for the look via an image she found on Google.
“I created my Doctor’s costume with Ray Holman, the costume designer who worked on Broadchurch.

There’s been even more mystery than usual surrounding the Doctor’s latest regeneration in Doctor Who. We learned a few months ago that Peter Capaldi would be exiting the Tardis this year, which sent rumours mills running wild with claims that numerous actors and actresses had been linked with the role.
Besides that, there’ve also been many hints that Capaldi’s replacement may appear earlier than expected. The season 10 trailer teased that the Doctor would regenerate during the final episode (though this turned out to be a ruse) and outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat has said that he worked with his replacement, Chris Chibnall, to come up with a “slightly different” regeneration. So, has the next Doctor already been cast then, with the news kept secret in order to pull off an amazing twist before the season is out?
Well, not quite. At least, not according to a new bit of information that’s surfaced today. Speaking to Radio Times, the show’s costume designer, Ray Holman, was asked about the next Doctor’s outfit and revealed that he hasn’t even thought about it yet as Capaldi’s replacement is still to be cast.
“I think they’ll need me after the Christmas show. As soon as that’s finished in the autumn I will start talking to Chris [Chibnall] – once I know who they’ve chosen to be the Doctor.”

That seems pretty clear cut, doesn’t it? The new Doctor won’t need a new costume until after the Christmas special, most likely because he or she won’t appear until the final moments of that episode, as per tradition. If you recall, both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi also first featured in a cameo appearance in a Christmas special before headlining the show the following year.
If that is the case, though, then where have all these rumours – not to mention Moffat’s comments – come from? There must be more to it than meets the eye, right? Looks like we’ll just have to keep watching to find out.
The penultimate episode of season 10 of Doctor Who airs this Saturday at 9Pm on BBC America. Will you be tuning in? Sound off in the usual place and let us know!

Doctor Who, the quirky British sci-fi television series about a time travelling alien and his friends, premiered in 1963. Since then there have been twelve Doctors (and a War Doctor), each with their own unique looks to match their unique and often eccentric personalities. With the debut of the Twelfth Doctor fast approaching, this post takes a look back at the three Doctors we’ve seen so far (not including the War Doctor) on Doctor Who since it was rebooted in 2005 (or New Who, as some like to call it) and guesses at what we can expect from Doctor number twelve.

The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) arrived on our screens fresh from the end of the Time War, and still living with the horrors of this war and his choice to end it by destroying not only the Daleks but his own people and planet.

Benedict Cumberbatch finds it difficult to breathe in his tight 'Sherlock' costumes. The 35-year-old actor plays legendary detective 'Sherlock Holmes' in the BBC One show and although the series takes place in a contemporary setting, he admitted the clothes he has to wear often leave him feeling restricted. He told EmpireOnline: "We all put a lot of thought into the outfits. The gloves and scarf were my idea, and the coat was [costume designer] Ray Holman's discovery. "There's just a clean, linear, functional beauty about Sherlock. There's nothing showy or flamboyant about him. And I get to wear very well-cut, good-looking...

Sherlock Season 2 Sneak Peek
We have an early Christmas present for fans of Sherlock in the form of two clips from the first episode of season 2 "A Scandal in Belgravia."
As we have previously mentioned this episode is based on the Sherlock Holmes short story "A Scandal in Bohemia," where we will be introduced to "the woman" Irene Adler (Lara Pulver). Whilst the clips don't feature Adler, nor do they reveal how Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) escaped their predicament at the hands of Moriarty (Andrew Scott), they do set up the new season.
The first clip has Di Lestrade (Rupert Graves) warning a colleague about Sherlock's unusual and potentially infuriating methods. These unusual crime solving techniques get revealed to this detective as Sherlock hasn't even travelled to the crime scenes, sending Watson alone with a laptop. This means that Sherlock doesn't even need to leave 221b...

Allen Park, Mich. — Protesters descended on a Lowe's store in one of the country's largest Arab-American communities on Saturday, calling for a boycott after the home improvement chain pulled its ads from a reality television show about five Muslim families living in Michigan.
About 100 people gathered outside the store in Allen Park, a Detroit suburb adjacent to the city where "All-American Muslim" is filmed. Lowe's said this week that the TLC show had become a "lightning rod" for complaints, following an email campaign by a conservative Christian group.
Protesters including Christian clergy and lawmakers called for unity and held signs that read "Boycott Bigotry" and chanted "God Bless America, shame on Lowe's" during the rally, which was organized by a coalition of Christian, Muslim and civil rights groups.

Recently underway on Sky Atlantic, This is Jinsy is one of those comedy shows set in a surreal world of madness that you either get or you don’t. Frequently hilarious and always interesting, from a costume point of view this is retro fancy dress, deliberately mismatched and performance orientated. Yet everything in Jinsy makes sense within its own world.
The island of Jinsy is populated (791 residents) by all manner of weird and wonderful people. The locale has been likened to The Wicker Man’s Summerisle but is spiritually closer to the Village from Patrick McGoohan’s sixties TV series, The Prisoner. Everyone in Jinsy seems trapped there but somehow content. Episode one entitled ‘The Wedding Lottery’ introduces a lot of faces very quickly. All the inhabitants are broadly drawn, however, so relatively easy to fathom.
Justin Chubb as Maven, David Tennant as Mr Slightlyman and Chris Bran as Sporall.

Penny Rose, costume designer on video game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time talks us through her intentions for the movie, including 800 year old embroidery patterns and priests dressed in bedspreads.
Penny Rose has been costume designer on nearly forty films. As evidenced by her CV that includes Shadowlands (1993), Evita (1996) and The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (2003-07), she prefers period/fantasy to contemporary and typically favours bigger budget Hollywood productions.
Her team for Prince of Persia swelled to seventy five incorporating jewellery, armoury and boot makers, three seamstresses, two craft makers, a five strong design team and chief cutter, among others. Listing Zulu (1964) as the one picture she would’ve loved to have created costumes for, Rose evidently revels in a large scale challenge. Here she explains exactly what those on Prince of Persia entailed:
Many of the costumes were made in Morocco, what trials did that create for you?...

Here is a real treat for Doctor Who fans, plus anyone craving a revival of the bow tie. Costume designer for the new series, Ray Holman, chats exclusively to Clothes on Film about dressing Matt Smith in the part. He has even given us a character sketch.
Clothes on Film: Can you talk us through the new Doctor’s look?
Ray Holman: The Doctor wears tan top lace-up ankle boots, skinny houndstooth trousers with the bottoms rolled up to sit at the top of the boots, and braces. A cranberry coloured squiggly pattern slim-cut shirt with striped cuffs and a soft collar, a small bow tie, a tweed jacket which has elbow patches, leather buttons with about five hidden pockets.
He is a mixture of professor and student; he is still learning yet is an authority on many, many things (Ray’s own character sketch below).

Manufacturers of Harris Tweed have reportedly been swamped with interest after the first pictures of Matt Smith as the Time Lord show him wearing the traditional Hebridean material. Costume designer Ray Holman selected the jacket after developing the 11th Doctor's outfit in consultation with Smith, who believed that the traditional weave had a certain "authority". The jacket was found in a London warehouse of Angels costumiers and has since been analysed by weavers on the Scottish islands who have identified it as a "Mackenzie 'two by two' dogtooth, probably produced in the 1960s".
