From master criminals like Professor Moriarty to Sebastian Moran, Sherlock Holmes faced his fair share of danger – but his greatest nemesis may have been the man who created him, Arthur Conan Doyle. Exasperated by his brainchild’s overwhelming popularity, the weary scribe groused, ”I think of slaying Holmes… and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things.”
Doyle tried to kill off his cash-cow on at least one occasion but the great detective had the last word, maintaining a firm grip on our imagination decades after other seemingly invincible literary characters dropped down the memory hole – perhaps because Holmes is far more mysterious than any mystery he himself might have...

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King arrive at the hugely popular The Shawshank Redemption...
The film: Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is accused of murdering his wife and her lover. Despite protesting his innocence, the jury is unconvinced and he is given two life sentences, the duration of which will be endured at Shawshank Prison. There, he meets Red (Morgan Freeman) who narrates their story. The two men form a close friendship as Andy gets used to prison life, dealing with aggressive fellow inmates, corrupt prison officials, and eventually running the Shawshank library.

Emma Willis has spoken about the forthcoming season of The Voice UK.
Willis, who presents the BBC One show, said that Rita Ora is doing a "brilliant" job in her new role as coach.
Speaking on Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Willis said: "Rita [Ora] is doing absolutely brilliantly - we've filmed everything up until the Knockouts, so I've seen her in full flow - and she's just, you can't imagine trying to replace Kylie, and being the person who sits in that chair after her, you would imagine has a very big job on their hands, and Rita's done it seamlessly, and really well.
"She said she was really nervous beforehand, but she just went in there, sat in the chair, and she was off and running."
Going on to speak about celebrity auditionees on the show, she said: "There are a couple of people that you will recognise, definitely...

The breakup saga between Rita Ora and Rob Kardashian continues, with Jonah Hill now in the mix.
A source revealed to Us Weekly that Kardashian dumped Ora after learning she cheated on him with Hill. "Rita spent the night with Jonah during a trip to New York," the insider said. The two met at a club in the city and allegedly went home together in November.
"I heard she cheated, but I don't know," reality star Nyasha Zimucha, who appeared on "The A-List: New York," told Us Weekly.
Earlier this month, Kardashian took to Twitter to unleash a series of angry tweets about a woman who cheated on him. Ora was never named, but many presumed she was the subject because the two had been romantically linked since the summer.
"She cheated on me with nearly 20 dudes while we were together, I wonder how many she will sleep with now that we apart?...

Sam Shepard excels in Mateo Gil's elegiac sequel imagining further adventures in Bolivia for the Wild Bunch leader
Back in 1969 George Roy Hill brought Paul Newman and Robert Redford together in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a self-consciously stylish western in which two notorious bandits were celebrated as forerunners of the outlaw sensibility of the 1960s. A decade later, Richard Lester, one of the film-makers credited for shaping the artistic expression of the 60s with The Knack and two Beatles films, made his only western, Butch and Sundance: The Early Days. Featuring two young actors, Tom Berenger and William Katt, with uncanny resemblances to Newman and Redford, the film took a quirky but generally realistic look at frontier life as it related to the pair's early criminal life and friendship, ending in the 1890s at the point where they were becoming aware of being legends, leaders of a gang called the Wild Bunch.

Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.
We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).
The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.
The newly re-titled To Rome With Love will open in Italy on 20th April...

Update (January 30, 2012): Australian producer Grant Hill is one of four producers that will accept the Oscar should Terence Malick's Tree of Life win Best Picture. The film's nominees were originally listed as 'to be determined', following the Academy's decision that only a maximum of three producers would be recognised per best picture contender.
It was decided on Friday that Tree of Life represented 'extraordinary circumstances' and the rule was waived. Should the film upset popular contenders Hugo and The Artist, the Oscar will be accepted by Hill alongside fellow producers Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner.
Correction: Sound re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, who received his thirteen nomination for best achievement in sound for Steven Spielberg's War Horse, is in fact British. In 2001, Nelson received an Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian film production for his work on Moulin Rouge.

Its that time of the year again in when everyone prepares their Oscar predictions, because let’s be honest for a moment – the best part of the Oscars is placing your bets on who’ll win and hopefully walking away from a long and usually boring ceremony with some extra cash in your pocket. This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards with no major surprises but instead, a long list of snubs. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is the surprise leader of the 2012 Academy Award nominations with 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director. The Artist followed with 10 nominations. Here are my predictions of who I feel will take home gold come Sunday February 26, as well as those films and talent who I believe were snubbed.

The couple hasn't come forward about the engagement; this story comes from a rep for Gurhan, the jeweler that designed the ring. After all, why wait for free advertising?

There is some bad (yet unsurprising) news for Lindsay Lohan. The IRS is claiming the actress did not pay income tax in 2009, and now the agency is looking...

If the rate of stories about Beyonce and Jay-z’s blessed babe continues, we might have to start an entirely new blog devoted to Blue Ivy Carter. But in the meantime, here’s a little roundup of the latest B.I.C. headlines we love and loathe:
» NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t exactly confirm rumors about the special treatment Bey got at Lenox Hill Hospital, but at a press conference on Tuesday, he defended the practice of letting rich people upgrade hospital services. “If [the hospital] got paid a lot of money and it let them provide services to other people who don’t have insurance or can’t afford it, I’m not so sure it’s a bad thing. … I don’t think you should keep people from seeing their babies, or whatever, but have different services for people who are full-paying patients.”

Andrew Embiricos, grandson of Rita Hayworth and Prince Aly Khan, was found dead of an apparent suicide at his West 17th Street apartment in Chelsea, New York City, on Sunday, Dec. 4. Embiricos was 25. Andrew Ali Aga Khan Embiricos was the son of economist and shipping heir Basil Embiricos and Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. He was also the nephew of Prince Karim, Aga Khan IV. As such, Embiricos was purportedly a direct descendant of the prophet Mohammed. His body, lying face up in bed with a bag over his head, was found Sunday evening by a friend, Aaron Edwards, who then called 911. An autopsy is to be performed. Because the handsome Embiricos had appeared in amateur gay sex video clips on X-Tube, New York and gay tabloids have gone on to claim that his death wasn't actually suicide, but an experimentation with autoerotic asphyxiation gone wrong. Those are the same sensational...

What makes a movie classic? Box office success is usually a big factor in elevating a film’s status, but even that’s no guarantee. The balance sheets on Avatar (2010) may have looked good but for all its technical brilliance, it lacked the special magic that immortalized Gone With the Wind (1939). It is very hard to believe that some of the best films ever made were commercial flops when they were first released. Were they too complex? Were the too arty? Or were they released at the wrong time? The reasons vary but there’s no denying these classics have survived better than many more successful movies of the day.
So what makes a movie classic? I think it has a lot to do with enduring appeal. Some have achieved cult status when released many years later while others were re-discovered after a lengthy period in obscurity. Art-house and underground...

Shrewd film publicist who later achieved success as a producer
A masochistic Hollywood decree insists that press agents must be depicted on screen as loathsome toadying creatures, and movie moguls as vulgar, mercenary despots. Walter Seltzer, who has died aged 96, was both a press agent and a producer, but he failed to conform to either of the self-perpetuating stereotypes. As a press agent he was persuasive rather than pushy; as a producer, he believed in consensus decision-making.
Undoubtedly his greatest achievement as a press agent was in his promotion of Marty (1955), a gentle, small-scale study of the mundane with no star names. Seltzer believed so much in the Harold Hecht/Burt Lancaster production that the promotional campaign for the film was more expensive than the film itself: $400,000 compared to $343,000. Among Seltzer's tactics was his sending prints of the film to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,...

It’s unusually thrilling whenever a major motion picture takes on a living, influential public figure, the way Citizen Kane did with William Randolph Hearst, The Social Network with Mark Zuckerberg, or Sweet Smell Of Success with Walter Winchell. In the latter, Burt Lancaster—who also co-produced the film with James Hill, Harold Hecht, and co-star Tony Curtis—stars as a Winchell-like columnist who publishes political opinions, gossipy smears, and star-making “items” in The New York Globe under the heading “The Eyes Of Broadway.” The audience feels Lancaster’s presence long before we see him in the movie. We see ...
