It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

Ten years ago, two films that paid tribute to classic cinema vied for top honors at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, racing neck and neck with the most nominations of the evening. In the acting categories, there was a first, a third and a record. A popular host returned after an eight-year absence, and a leg became the most talked about event of the night. Let’s flashback to the Oscars ceremony of 2012.
Billy Crystal, who had last presided over the ceremony in 2004, returned for his ninth time hosting, and for the first time since the Best Picture category had expanded to greater than five nominees. Famous for paying homage to each Best Picture nominee in his opening, he proudly managed to include all nine of those films in his opening song routine – which may not have been all that difficult, since some of Hollywood’s biggest names were up for awards.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”

2020 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards nominations: ‘Bombshell,’ ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Joker’ lead
The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing its nominations on November 11. That is two months earlier than last year, when the slate was revealed midway through Oscar nominations voting. This year, the guild is out of the gate five weeks before the academy unveils the shortlist in nine categories, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling. These awards will be handed out on January 11, which is after Oscar voting but before the nominations are announced.
Two films — “Bombshell” and “Rocketman” — reaped three bids apiece with the Muahs guild. Both contend for special makeup effects. The former figures in both contemporary makeup and hair styling while the latter does likewise on the period/character side.
Six films are two-time nominees: “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

No one doubts that Meryl Streep is committed to her craft - her awards, including three Oscars and three Emmys, speak for themselves. Now, her latest role as Nicole Kidman's terrifying mother-in-law on Big Little Lies has more or less secured her a shot at a fourth Emmy - fake teeth for the role included. Besides emotionally connecting with the role of Mary Louise Wright, Streep also physically transformed herself with a no-nonsense bob, grandma-chic wardrobe, and, hold onto your dentures, set of fake teeth. You might not have noticed the actress's new set of pearly whites immediately, but it was definitely a deliberate decision to have them.
The New York Times's Kyle Buchanan was the first person to point them out after a source told him that the actress wanted to wear fake teeth. But, perhaps like some of us, he couldn't really tell at first. However,...

Oscar voters love to reward the makeup artists and hairstylists who transform some of Hollywood’s most famous faces into historical figures. Since the competitive category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1982, eight films in which performers portray famous folks have won this Oscar. Adam McKay‘s “Vice,” a sly satire on the life and times of politician Dick Cheney, is poised to be the ninth to do so.
Over the two hour plus running time of “Vice,” Christian Bale portrays Cheney from his early years in Wyoming to his eight years as vice president. The actor gained 40 plus pounds and shaved his head to look like the man who was second in command during some of the darkest days in American history.
It is no surprise that Bale is tipped to take home his second Oscar. Also nominated are Amy Adams, who portrays...

Luca Guadgnino‘s new film, “Suspiria,” is certainly a singular, unique directorial vision. This retelling of Dario Argento‘s 1977 horror classic tells the story of Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), an American dancer accepted into an elite German dance company. Turns out the artistic director Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) is not who she seems.
This dance company is, essentially, a front for a coven of witches. Basically, this is what “American Horror Story: Coven” would have been like if it had been less “Mean Girls” and more “Blair Witch Project.” This isn’t a straight-up horror, however. It’s more a of a psychological drama – one that slowly cranks up the tension through suspenseful dance set piece, weird, erratic imagery, and a terrific performance by the inimitable Swinton.
She takes on three roles: Helena Markos, the ‘mother’ of the coven; Madame Blanc, the artistic director of the dance academy; and the therapist Dr Josef Klemperer.

Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.
Those odds are based on the combined predictions of thousands of users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far. That includes 26 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, 25 of whom are predicting a “Darkest Hour...

After her two early Oscar wins for “Kramer vs Kramer” (1979) and “Sophie’s Choice” (1982), Meryl Streep went through the next three decades earning a record-shattering 17 Academy Awards nominations by 2011. There was never any doubt that Streep would join the elite group of actors who’ve won three or more Academy Awards, but for which performance would it be?
See Oscars flashback: Meryl Streep exclaims ‘Holy mackerel’ winning her 1st Oscar for ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ [Watch]
That answer came with her third Oscar win as it finally arrived 29 years after her second for her transformative performance as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in director Phyllida Lloyd’s “The Iron Lady.” Watch the video above as she receives the award from Colin Firth and admits to the audience, “I’ll never be up here again!”
Though the film itself was not a huge critical or commercial hit, Streep received unanimous praise for her performance.

“Darkest Hour” is as much of a lock to win the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar as it is to claim Best Actor. Those uncanny prosthetics to transform Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill didn’t create themselves, you know? If the film does take home Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Japanese makeup wizard Kazuhiro Tsuji, who was retired two years ago until Oldman came calling, would be the first Asian person to win the category.
A three-time nominee, Tsuji, who shares his nomination with David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick, is the only Asian makeup artist ever nominated in the category. He was previously up for “Click” (2006) and “Norbit” (2007), and won a BAFTA for “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000).

“Darkest Hour” is the overwhelming Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling thanks in large part to the prosthetics used to transform lead actor Gary Oldman into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This award has gone to a number of films that recreate historical figures over the years, but the motion picture academy has been especially fond of British icons.
Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison and Lois Burwell won for “Braveheart” (1995), about 13th century Scottish warrior William Wallace. But Wallace was actually fighting to free Scotland from English rule, so perhaps we should leave that one out. But just a few years later Jenny Shircore prevailed for “Elizabeth” (1998), which transformed Cate Blanchett into Queen Elizabeth I during the early years of her reign. And one year after that Christine Blundell and Trefor Proud prevailed for Mike Leigh‘s biopic “Topsy-Turvy” (1999), about the British operatic duo of Gilbert and Sullivan.

At times, while directing Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in "The Birdcage," Mike Nichols found himself laughing so hard that he had to work from beneath a soundproof blanket in order not to ruin the takes. Can you blame him?
Twenty years after its release on March 8, 1996, "The Birdcage" remains a hilarious landmark. Besides being a smash hit, the film made a movie star out of Lane, gave Calista Flockhart her big break, and provided probably the only opportunity in film history to see Gene Hackman in a platinum blonde wig and a gown. Still, as many times as you've watched it on cable over the past two decades, there's still much you may not now about the beloved drag comedy. Here are the secrets "The Birdcage" has tucked away.

Kieran, here. The three films nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars this are an interesting bunch. The Academy had a lot of options to choose from and it almost feels miraculous that they didn’t default nominate things like The Danish Girl or Black Mass, which (questions of merit aside) are practically begging the viewer to notice the makeup work in both cases. Even if they’re not yours, it’s a respectable crop of nominees. An aside: if we’re going to get five original song nominees every year no matter what, why only three nominees in this category? Curious…
Mad Max: Fury Road – Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega, Damian Martin
Previous Work: A lot of features with both George Miller and Baz Luhrmann, but as supervisors (makeup supervisors don’t get nominated, so they weren’t cited when Moulin Rouge! was nominated in 2001)

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

It’s almost time for the British Academy Film Awards, and earlier today (January 9) the illustrious list of nominees was unveiled. Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is out in front with 11 nods, while “Birdman” is close behind with an impressive 10 chances for glory.
Meanwhile, both Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) have been nominated for Best Actor, though Redmayne insists there’s no competition between them. He explained, "One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen! We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other, but we are old, old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.”

Ahead of the 72nd annual Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 68th British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs) on Friday morning. Leading the pack is The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations.
The recognition for Wes Anderson’s comedy comes as a surprise since the film has only managed to pick up a handful of nominations in the U.S., including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Director at the Golden Globes, which airs live on Sunday, Jan. 11.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

To me, the most impressive thing about the musical Into the Woods, Disney’s big Oscar hopeful this season, is the quality of its craftwork — the great Colleen Atwood’s costumes, Peter Swords King’s hairstyling and makeup and Roy Helland’s makeup work with Meryl Streep. It is, literally and figuratively, out of this world.
For that reason, The Hollywood Reporter is pleased to exclusively debut a featurette — which will later appear as part of a TV promotional spot for the film — about how those aspects of the film all came together.

Welcome to one of the most unique categories at the Oscars. Best Makeup & Hairstyling is the only category to still feature the "bake-off” phase, where three nominees are chosen from seven finalists after those finalists each make a pitch-via-reel to the branch. Every year features surprise omissions and inclusions, both among the final seven and the final three. The category seems almost uniquely immune to being overwhelmed by the overall reputation of a film. (Best Costume Design is its only rival in this respect.) Films of questionable quality are nominated nearly every year. While some lament the titles that have earned the moniker "Oscar nominee” ("Norbit” perhaps being the most infamous example), I for one love the fact that this branch actually strives to do what it is tasked with. While these macro-level characteristics of the category permeate the nominations process, trends among the nominees are nevertheless observable. The category tends to award monster makeup,...

Two years ago, on the eve of his eagerly awaited Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman, I sat down with Mike Nichols to look back on his remarkable career. During those two-plus hours together at the Mark Hotel in Manhattan, the legendary director, then 80, reminisced about a life of highs and lows that began as a bright-eyed young boy who fled Nazi Germany for America. "I remember everything about getting on the boat in Germany in 1939," Nichols said. "I was 7, my brother was 3, and my father was already in New York setting up his practice as a doctor. German Jews couldn't leave the country,...

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol; The Wicker Tree; The Iron Lady
After blotting his copybook with the drearily disappointing Knight and Day, Tom Cruise regains his multiplex action mojo with the surprisingly sprightly Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011, Paramount, 12). Thrown into the wilderness by an absurdly contrived chain of conspiratorial events culminating in the near-destruction of the Kremlin, the now-rogue Ethan Hunt ventures to Dubai, Mumbai and various other scenic locales where he and his crack team of elite outcasts must reclaim their mission status against predictably impossible odds.
Having clearly workshopped the audience responses from previous films, the writers (Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are credited) contrive to bring comic sidekick Simon Pegg to the fore in the manner of Joe Pesci in the Lethal Weapon sequels, while simultaneously breaking up the all-boys club with ass-kicking heroine Paula Patton.
If it all sounds terribly cynical on paper, the on-screen results are far more likably playful,...

Chicago – The best scene in Phyllida Lloyd’s biopic, “The Iron Lady,” takes place in a doctor’s office as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher insists that she’s doing perfectly well, thank you very much. The bullheaded determination that fueled her spectacular success and garnered a fiery backlash has now manifested itself in her elderly years as a warm but firm stubbornness.
As Thatcher, Meryl Streep performs Olympian miracles with the dialogue, allowing her wistful passion to shine through her fatigued frustration. The ever-immersive actress vanishes behind the makeup of her longtime collaborator, J. Roy Helland, and the remarkable prosthetics of Mark Coulier (all three earned well-deserved Oscars for their efforts). When the doctor asks how she’s feeling, Thatcher delivers a disgruntled monologue about how modern society cares more about feelings than thoughts and ideas. A sudden interruption to their conversation provides an out for Thatcher, and Streep...

Meryl Streep, J. Roy Helland Meryl Streep and J. Roy Helland toast their respective Oscar wins at the Governors Ball following the 84th Academy Awards held at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26, 2012. After thanking husband Don Gummer in her acceptance speech, Streep expressed her joy that her "other partner," makeup artist Helland, had finally won an Academy Award (shared with Mark Coulier). Both Streep and Helland were honored for their work on Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady. (Photo: Darren Decker / © A.M.P.A.S.) Helland has been working Streep since Alan J. Pakula's Sophie's Choice, the movie that earned the veteran actress her first Best Actress Oscar back in early 1983. Among his other movies with Streep are Robert Benton's Still of the Night, Mike Nichols' Silkwood, Ulu Grosbard's Falling in Love, Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa, Nichols' Heartburn,...
