"It's A Wonderful Life" is an unforgettable classic that renews itself every holiday season. The striking narrative articulates strong morals, like the importance of family and an individual's importance in a community, punctuated by almost hallucinogenic imagery of the ground opening up beneath one's feet. It's a heartwrenching picture made all the emotional by the sentimentality of Christmastime. The Frank Capra film is nostalgic for everyone, from older people who watched it as a child to the generations to follow who passed down the tradition to their children. Most kids aren't dying to sit down and watch a black-and-white talkie from studio-era Hollywood, and yet the film's fanbase gains new members every year.
But as the 1946 film ages, so too does its cast, and many of the main cast members have not made it to 2024, including leading man Jimmy Stewart. In fact, most of the adults in the film passed...

Judy Nugent, the former ’50s child actor who co-starred with Jane Wyman in Magnificent Obsession, Annette Funicello in the popular Annette serial on ABC’s The Mickey Mouse Club and flew in the arms of George Reeves’ Superman in a 1954 episode of The Adventures of Superman, died of October 26 cancer, surrounded by family at her ranch in Montana. She was 83.
Her death was announced in a family statement released by daughter-in-law Anne Lockhart, the Chicago Fire actor and daughter of Lost in Space star June Lockhart.
A Los Angeles native – she was the daughter of MGM prop man Carl Nugent – Nugent had already appeared in a handful of uncredited roles, including in the 1951 film Angels in the Outfield, when she landed her breakthrough role as Donna Ruggles in the 1949-52 TV series The Ruggles, an early family sitcom starring comic actor Charles Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby). Judy Nugent, who portrayed one of the twins on the early TV sitcom The Ruggles and a girl who flies around the world in the arms of the Man of Steel on a heartwarming Adventures of Superman episode, has died. She was 83.

2002's "Treasure Planet" may've been one of the biggest flops in the history of Disney's animation department, but the swashbuckling sci-fi adventure starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt still has its fair share of fans. The immersive and often beautiful world of space pirates created for the film separates the project from other, more recognizable Disney animated offerings. "Treasure Planet" itself was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, a filmmaking duo that had previously delivered multiple slam-dunks for Disney, including "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and "Hercules." Their successful track record allowed the directors to venture into a new reality, one inspired by another filmmaker's mind-bending work.
As we remember it, "Treasure Planet" more than earned its title with a space adventure story for the ages. A sci-fi twist on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island," the film followed Jim Hawkins (Gordon-Levitt), a teenager who comes across a map that leads to the ultimate pirate treasure.

Paul McCartney based The Beatles‘ “Eleanor Rigby” on an old lady he often visited as a boy. The stories she used to tell the singer-songwriter “enriched” his soul.

In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul said he knew many old ladies growing up partially through Bob-a-Job Week, “when Scouts did chores for a shilling.” He explained, “You’d get a shilling for cleaning out a shed or mowing a lawn.”
Years later, during his time with The Beatles, Paul wanted to write a song that would pay homage to the older women in his neighborhood, specifically one old lady he got on with very well. He doesn’t remember how he first met “Eleanor Rigby,” but he’d go to her house often.

The early 2000s were a weird time for everyone -- Disney included. Like an exhausted millennial desperately rephrasing their resume, Walt Disney Animation Studios was eager to latch onto anything that would permit the company a new lease on life. For context, the Disney Renaissance, which began with "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and shuttered its majestic doors with "Tarzan" in 1999, was over and the studio wanted to prove it could create stories that were more than musically charged fantasies. What's more, Disney also wanted to explore more computer-generated imagery or, as it's better known, CGI. Throw in an increasingly voracious audience with a highly specific hunger for science-fiction and, well, two and two makes four.
Look, this is a gross exaggeration of how Disney functioned in the early 2000s. It seems like the company was working with a strict "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" mentality. Nothing...

The pitch for John Musker and Rob Clements' 2002 animated feature "Treasure Planet" couldn't be simpler: "Treasure Island" in space. Made on a sizable budget of 140 million, "Treasure Planet" transformed the three-masted maritime sailing ships of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1882 novel into cosmos-dwelling, frigate-shaped spacecraft that soar on solar sails. In an effort to "hip up" the joint, Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) was turned into a rebellious, solar surfing teen, and Long John Silver (Brian Murray) didn't just have a peg leg, but multiple bionic body parts. A talking parrot became a small, shapeshifting blob. Captain Smollett was transformed into the feline humanoid Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), and the stranded Ben Gunn was turned into a malfunctioning robot named B.E.N. (Martin Short). The treasure was still treasure.
The changes were clever enough, and the designers working on "Treasure Planet" skewed heavily into steampunk, a sub-genre of sci-fi that imagined...

The first film to feature Tom Clancy's stalwart and honest action hero Jack Ryan was John McTiernan's 1990 thriller "The Hunt for Red October." In the early parts of McTiernan's film, a rogue Soviet submarine called Red October, captained by Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), has broken off from the Soviet fleet and may be planning an unauthorized nuclear strike in the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) pieces together some information about Ramius and concludes that he is not striking the U.S., but defecting. He is given three days to track down the Red October, confront Ramius, and confirm his suspicions.
"Red October" was successful enough to spawn a briefly popular subgenre of steely espionage thrillers that persisted throughout the front end of the decade. Jack Ryan would return in the hit films "Patriot Games," and "Clear and Present Danger" (with Harrison Ford as Ryan) and "The Sum of All Fears...

The project follows Walker’s journey during the Civil War as she struggled to be accepted and compensated in the same manner as her male counterparts in the medical field and ultimately became the first and only female recipient to receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Treasure Planet
Written by Ron Clements, John Musker and Rob Edwards
Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker
USA, 2002
Treasure Planet should have been one of Disney’s heavy hitters. The modern-day twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island had a lot going for it. Pirate adventure in space filled with interstellar ships and mutinies? Check. Stunning visuals that combine traditional 2D and modern 3D animation? Check. A great cast of characters? Well, that depends on who you ask. Treasure Planet clearly wanted to teach its audience that there is greater value in self-discovery than a ship filled with treasure from a thousand worlds. However, when it came time to test the cut of its sails, Treasure Planet left audiences standing on the docks dreaming of what could have been, if only Jim had found a way to save the treasure.
Mind you, this Disney adventure did not fail because those watching are greedy.

Just when you thought the pirate trend had finally sunk with all hands, Michael Bay comes along. The visionary director/producer behind Transformers and The Island is now bringing us Black Sails, a Starz series featuring nasty pirates and buried treasure. Ahoy, mateys!
Black Sails is a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson’s seminal pirate novel Treasure Island. It features the adventures of Captain Flint and his merry band on New Providence Island, many years before the events surrounding peg-legged Long John Silver and young Jim Hawkins. Starring Toby Stevens as the dashing Captain Flint, this first episode was directed by The Descent helmer Neil Marshall (Bay is only an executive producer on the show). We can expect all sorts of exciting pirate shenanigans from this crew of ne’er-do-wells, and probably some nice big explosions as well; this is a Michael Bay product, after all.

Frank Capra's classic Christmas movie It's A Wonderful Life, which starred Jimmy Stewart, is getting a sequel after all these years. I really enjoyed this film. I watch it every year, and I never thought I would see a sequel to it, but it's actually happening.

Not even R2D2 or Et can usurp the stump-legged pirate Long John Silver or diminish the excitement of the battle for the hidden treasure
Treasure Island, one of the greatest adventure stories of all times, is 100 years old this month. You might think that we who have left sailing ships and buried treasure far behind and entered the space age would consign such an old chestnut to the dustbins of history.
But youngsters locked into Star Wars and Action Man also read Treasure Island. Why else are there 38 different editions in print in the Us alone and 43 in Great Britain? Why else, in 1977, was the book translated into 29 foreign editions?
The answer is that such a story never really ages or dies, because we are, like it or not, slaves to adventure. Some of us go out and seek it actively, scaling mountains, plumbing the oceans, taking those first giant steps on the moon.

In this version the guardian angel shows the new George how much better off the world would have been had he never been born. Karolyn Grimes, who played the daughter 'Zuzu' in the original, will play the angel.
Original cast members Jimmy Hawkins and Carol Coombs are said to be in talks to reprise their roles, but the casting of the lead won't take place until February. A director is also being sought.

It's been close to 60 years since the release of "It's a Wonderful Life," but the beloved holiday classic is gearing up for a sequel.
Variety reports that the follow-up will be titled "It's A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story," and focus on the grandson of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), also named George Bailey. But unlike the 1946 flick, in which a guardian angel showed a suicidal Bailey the positive impact he had on others' lives, the present-day Bailey, described as "unlikeable," will instead be shown "how much better off the world would have been had he never been born."
While that sounds pretty bleak for an allegedly feel-good family film, those involved with the sequel say the movie will closely mirror its predecessor.
"The storyline of the new film retains the spirit of the original -- every life is important as long as you have friends," said co-writer Bob Farnsworth.

Get past the title, and uwantme2killhim? is a movie with one or two good tricks up its sleeve...
Produced by Bryan Singer (yes, that one), and directed by the 2005 Amityville Horror/countless adverts helmer Andrew Douglas, uwantme2killhim is a solid, well constructed story about teenage isolation. Its mysteries play out well, resolved quickly and satisfactorily, though it never quite realises its potential. Based on a true story, its focus on one of its subjects is both a boon and a problem for the movie.
Mark (Jamie Blackley), is a popular 16 year old boy. We see a little of his life before the start of the main narrative, but not enough to really get to know him. uwantme2killhim came with a free pamphlet detailing the cast and crew, and their thoughts on the film, and here the idea of Mark peaking too soon is brought up.

The shy new girl in the school. Ariel is in the swimming club of the University waiting for her "surfer" Eric ;D
Here's a fun series of Disney inspired character art that re-imagines several classic characters as college students. The illustrations were done by Deviant Artist Hyung86. I've also included notes from the artist on each character. Hope you like them.
Hercules and Beast will be the Quaterbacks of this university. They are cool, strong and a little bit arrogant
I always see Alice like a freaky bohemian girl who's every hour in is inner-wonderland
Our freaky/Nerd/lovely Belle!
I started with Peter Pan because he represents the youth looking so funny and friendly with tinkerbell in his Converse
China's heroine now as a modern city girl. She is part of the dance team of the university, loves Jay Chou and Wang Lee Hom

Los Angeles — George Bailey can rest easy. He really did make a difference in the lives of people, including all 3.8 million in Los Angeles.
Bailey, for the one or two people who still haven't seen the classic Frank Capra film "It's A Wonderful Life," is a man driven to the brink of suicide when he comes to believe his life never really mattered.
It's up to his quirky guardian angel Clarence to set him straight by showing Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, what the world would have been like without him.
In honor of the film's 65th anniversary, the City Council declared Friday "It's A Wonderful Life Day" in Los Angeles.
To get people in the spirit, Councilman Tom Labonge, several members of Capra's family and a few others gathered at the director's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on a sunny holiday morning.

Marines finds a dead diver on the beach. Tony (Michael Weatherly) checks his desk for the van keys and finds gum, lip balm and change. Ziva (Cote de Pablo) finds some leftover candy from Valentine's day. Tony can't resist asking who it's from, it matters since Ziva "didn't eat it, so that person must not mean very much to you." Ziva replies it means nothing, which got Tony's goat, he's glad he wasn't her Valentine and so is she. Tony found McGee's (Sean Murray) CDs in his desk, which means McGee should've looked harder for them. McGee apologizes for not thinking to look in Tony's desk. Whoever drove the van last, has the keys. Tony got pizza cos he was hungry, that's nothing new, so doesn't he have his own car to drive now, or the agency car. Ziva asks where the dumpster is, why's she asking that when she's...

Chilean-born film-maker who became the darling of the French avant garde
Raúl Ruiz, the Chilean-born film director who has died aged 70 after suffering a lung infection, held audiences with his glittering eye for more than 40 years. Baroque imagery, bizarre humour and labyrinthine plots made his elusive and allusive oeuvre unlike anything else in contemporary cinema.
Although most of his films were made while he was an exile in France, his work was part of the fabulist tradition that runs through much Latin American literature, such as the writings of Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges and Alfonso Reyes. Ruiz liked to quote the Cuban surrealist writer José Lezama Lima, who stated that the task of the poet is "to go into a dark room and build a waterfall there".
Born in Puerto Montt, in southern Chile, Ruiz studied law, theology and theatre before becoming a prolific avant-garde playwright. His first feature,...

Not every movie can be a hit, and some blockbusters offer far more than their big budget and failure to dominate the box office might suggest. Here's our look at ten fascinating failures...
There are blockbuster movies that fail for good reason. Jonah Hex, Town & Country, Catwoman - they deserved their fate, really. In fact, there are films that made bucketloads of cash that didn't deserve their success, too. You can probably name a few of them quite easily.
But what we're interested in here are the blockbuster movies that struggled to make an impact, yet have something about them that makes them worthy of discussion many, many years later. Some of the films we're about to discuss are outright box office flops. Some simply didn't meet commercial expectations. All of them, to some degree, disappointed the studios that backed them.
Some of these aren't, all in honesty, particularly good.

A reluctant Hollywood child star, he returned to the spotlight in the Superman movies
Jackie Cooper, who has died aged 88, was the first child star of the talkies, paving the way for Freddie Bartholomew, Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney. While they could turn on the waterworks when called for, Cooper beat them all easily at the crying game. Little Jackie, from the age of eight until his early teens, blubbed his way effectively through a number of tearjerkers. Sometimes he would try to suppress his tears, pouting and saying, "Ah, shucks! Ah, shucks!" As a critic wrote in 1934: "Jackie Cooper's tear ducts, having been more or less in abeyance for the past few months, have been opened up to provide an autumn freshet in Peck's Bad Boy."
Cooper had started off in the movies billed as "the little tough guy" in eight of Hal Roach's Our Gang comedy shorts.

Actor Jackie Cooper, the man who played Clark Kent's newspaper boss in the first four Superman films, has died. He was 88.
A former child star, Cooper was one of only two young stars to win a Best Actor/Actress Oscar nomination before his 18th birthday for his role in 1931's Skippy. He was nine.
He also appeared in Treasure Island as Jim Hawkins and 1940's The Return of Frank James before turning his attention to TV as a regular and, in his later years, directing dramas like M*A*S*H* and The White Shadow.
But he's best known by movie fans as Perry White, the editor of the Daily Planet, where Superman's alter-ego Clark Kent worked in 1978's Superman and its three sequels.
He was also a true American hero - Cooper served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific towards the end of World War Two and became a leading naval recruitment officer in the Naval Reserve.
In the mid-1970s, just before he took on the role in the Superman film, he was promoted to a Captain.
According to IMDb.com, the Navy proposed a period of active duty at the Pentagon for Cooper in 1980, which would have resulted in a promotion to Rear Admiral - but he declined the offer so he could concentrate on his directing dreams.
Only one other celebrity, James Stewart, has held a higher military rank.
Flowers were placed on Cooper's Hollywood Walk of Fame star on Wednesday afternoon.

Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins, Lionel Barrymore as Billy Bones in Victor Fleming's Treasure Island Jackie Cooper Dies: Youngest Best Actor Oscar Nominee, Skippy, The Champ A series of programmers followed, among them Two Bright Boys (1939), once again pairing up Jackie Cooper with Freddie Bartholomew — who by then was sliding fast as well — and What a Life (1939), with Betty Field. In the latter release, Cooper played Henry Aldrich, a role he would incarnate once again in Life with Henry (1941) before Jimmy Lydon took over. Cooper's film career was interrupted during World War II. When he returned in the late 1940s, he found jobs scarce, appearing in only three minor features. Two of those, Kilroy Was Here (1947) and French Leave (1948), co-starred another former child star named Jackie, Charles Chaplin's little pal in The Kid, Jackie Coogan — who also happened to be Robert Coogan's older brother. #7 – Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
