The King is gone but not forgotten, this is the story of Johnny Rotten. Abramorama and Verisimilitude are not channeling Neil Young, but they are releasing the documentary film The Public Image Is Rotten in theaters in 2018.
The Public Image Is Rotten tells the story of music icon John Lydon and his pioneering group PiL. Directed by Tabbert Fiiller, The Public Image Is Rotten features in-depth interviews with Lydon, former and current bandmates, as well as Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ad-Rock (Beastie Boys) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) among others, and also features archival performance and interview footage.
The film opens in the United Kingdom beginning with a screening on June 3, 2018, at the Odeon Camden Cinema, and will feature a conversation with Lydon after the screening. Additional screenings in the U.K. during June and July will be announced followed later, with the global roll out of the film...

Four features under his belt (2004’s Malachance, 2006’s Drama/Mex, 2008’s I’m Gonna Explode and 2011’s Miss Bala) and Gerardo Naranjo‘s only history with the Sundance film festival is as a jury member. That might change come next January. One that I consider the odd man out among filmmakers from the Mexican film renaissance that commenced back with Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, from lovers on the run, beauty queens on the move and young adults hitting the road, there is a lot of chaotic displacement in his films. Since his sophomore feature, his films are high value festival items and since this is a U.S. shot project, Viena and the Fantomes could very much land a coveted Premieres category showing to make bidders. Naranjo’s Un Certain Regard section selected thriller Miss Bala seriously made the rounds, so this eighties punk era set film has a certain...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Crystal Moselle’s documentary “The Wolfpack,” which follows a group of movie-loving brothers in New York City who live isolated from the rest of society, an individual with knowledge of the deal has told TheWrap.
Known as “the Wolfpack,” the mostly-teenage Angulo brothers learn about the outside world through Hollywood movies like “Reservoir Dogs” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” They transcribe a film’s dialogue and pare down the script to re-enact the movies in their apartment. Things change when one of the brothers escapes into the real world.

The holidays are winding down and that means we at Ioncinema.com are gearing up for our annual pilgrimage to Park City where an A-list of documentaries is now set to premiere. Earlier this month Tabitha Jackson and the Sundance doc programming team let the cats out of the bag, unsurprisingly announcing much anticipated Us Doc Competition titles such as the Ross Brothers’ Western, Louie Psihoyos’ Racing Extinction, Marc Silver’s 3 1/2 Minutes and Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe’s (T)Error, along with some surprises like Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel’s bizarro Kickstarted doc Finders Keepers (see trailer below). Having been produced by the fine folks behind The King of Kong and Undefeated, the film bears all the markings of its well regarded pedigree, yet appears to be of even odder ilk, following the story that unfolded when a severed human foot was discovered in a grill bought at a North Carolina auction.

Much like the fate of those featured in his feature debut (The Ruins) the adults fall by the wayside and the teens in this long-awaited sophomore film are left to their own devices. Tonally speaking, Jamie Marks Is Dead is compelling because it works from some oddball premise material, but atmospherically with generous amounts of creepiness and with plenty of subtext — perhaps not Bugcrush sophistication, we find a Carter Smith in master-mode.
Gist: Based on Christopher Barzak’s novel (One for Sorrow), Adam McCormick (Monaghan) had just turned fifteen when the body was found in the woods. It is the beginning of an autumn that will change his life forever. Jamie...

With writer / director Carter Smith’s supernatural horror/love story Jamie Marks Is Dead having just played the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, we thought it time to chat with the filmmaker regarding the feature, as well as to bring you three exclusive stills and a clip.
Based on the Christopher Barzak novel One for Sorrow, Jamie Marks Is Dead documents the discovery of the body of the titular character (portrayed by Noah Silver) in a small wintry town. Adam (Cameron Monaghan), the star of his cross-country team, becomes fascinated with Jamie, a boy nobody really knew or interacted with, except occasionally to bully him. When Jamie’s ghost begins to appear both to Adam and Gracie (Morgan Saylor), the classmate who discovered the body, Adam is caught between two worlds. After making his narrative feature directorial debut at Sundance three years ago with the brilliant Another Earth, Mike Cahill has returned to Park City for his sophomore follow-up, I Origins.
The film has opened to positive early buzz amongst festivalgoers, and it’s now officially amongst the early acquisitions. Fox Searchlight has announced that it has acquired worldwide rights to the existential drama, with Deadline hearing that the deal impressively closed around the $3m. mark.
Ian Gray, a PhD student studying molecular biology with a specialty in eye evolution, leaves his lab to go to a party and has an intense, but fleeting, encounter with a mysterious, masked model who escapes into the night. With only a picture of her stunning and iconic eyes, he tracks her down, and they fall in love. Their fundamentally different beliefs about life only serve to intensify their connection, and they vow to spend forever together.

While The Ruins, his feature debut, didn’t open up the opportunities for this all-in-one talent pool, the best item to come out of Sundance 2006 was Carter Smith’s short Bugcrush, and the equally engaging Yearbook (we were there for the preem) was a 2011 reminder that Smith has got the goods. Reteaming with cinematographer Darren Lew, his sophomore film commenced production in March of this year (here is a rather nice set-visit journal from the book novelist) with a smart casting set comprised of Liv Tyler, Judy Greer and Cameron Monaghan, the indie-budgeted Jamie Marks Is Dead might be the fun in the woods anti-thesis of last year’s The Kings of Summer (Toy’s House) that puts a well deserved talent in the spotlight.

Fans of Mike Cahill’s feature, Special Jury Prize winning debut Another Earth (Sundance ’11) were elated when it was announced that Cahill and Brit Marling would re-team for I: Origins. Safe to say that Cahill’s sci-fi drama starring Marling, Michael Pitt, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (and a strong supporting cast) is well prepped for a festival preem in Park City — production ended in April this year in NYC and we think what will be served up is the early dark horse candidate for the festival’s Alfred P. Sloan Prize.

Verisimilitude's Alex Orlovsky and Hunter Gray are set to produce and co-finance through their banner.

Mike Cahill is working on a follow up to his Sundance hit Another Earth, and now it’s got a cast. The film, entitled I Origins, has rounded up Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Pitt, The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) and returning star Brit Marling. Marling co-wrote Another Earth with Cahill. Here’s a brief synopsis:
Pitt plays a molecular biologist who, together with his brilliant lab partner (Marling) uncovers startling evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.
Hunter Gray and Alex Orlovsky are producing with Cahill and WeWork Studio, Bersin Pictures and Penny Jane Films. And to be clear, I don’t anticipate any one topping Astrid Berges-Frisbey for name of the week.

At just 32 years old Mike Cahill has amassed a small but strong list of credits to his name. While studying economics at Georgetown University Cahill met Brit Marling, and a shared passion for cinema resulted in them collaborating on short films which Cahill would direct and Marling would star in. Several years later the pair worked on a documentary entitled Boxers and Ballerinas that explored the conflict between the U.S. and Cuba.
Cahill was the youngest field producer, editor and cinematographer for National Geographic Television and Film, and worked as an editor on the films Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man and Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, as well as various television shows and music videos.
Cahill’s first feature film as director and screenwriter is Another Earth which he cowrote with Marling, who also plays the lead role. This acclaimed and thought-provoking movie focuses on two...
