F Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen, The Italian Job) is in talks to direct "The Last Days of American Crime," a heist movie which has Sam Worthington (Avatar) attached to star. The new movie is based on the Radical graphic novel and is set in a near-future where the government plans to implement a form of legal mind control, making it impossible for its citizens to commit unlawful acts. Worthington will play a career criminal, who must put together the last heist in American history on the last night that crime is possible. "This is such a powerful, iconic piece of material - we really believe this movie can bring something fresh to the noir universe and become an explosive action feature film," said producer Stuart Ford. "We're delighted to be working alongside the super talented Radical team, Gary and Sam."...

It’s been waiting in limbo for a while now, but it looks like Sam Worthington might finally get to star in near-future heist tale The Last Days of American Crime now that F Gary Gray has come aboard to direct it.You may recall that, back in 2009, Worthington became attached to the project, though at the time there was no director contracted. We even joked that the graphic novel on which the story was based hadn’t even been published yet. Well, things have changed since then.Rick Remender’s story takes place in an America where government scientists are getting set to broadcast a signal that will effectively switch off the impulse to commit any kind of crime. A career crook (Worthington) spots an opportunity to pull off one last heist. Naturally, we’d expect there’s more to the whole signal idea than that.Karl Gajdusek, who...

F. Gary Gray To Work With Sam Worthington On New Film
Deadline is telling us that director F. Gary Gray is now attached to direct an adaptation of Rick Remender's comic series The Last Days of American Crime, a project that actor Sam Worthington has been attached to for a while. It is said to be his next project after he's done shooting on Wrath of the Titans. The project sounds interesting and I do like Gary Gray. He's done some very entertaining films like The Negotiator, The Italian Job and Law Abiding Citizen. I loved all of those and this one seems to be similar. Looks like an action/heist film that fits in very nicely with the type of movies Gray has done before.

Update: With a director has come a new writer. Kirsten Elms, who wrote a TV movie called Banshee in 2006, along with the thriller Hair of the Dog, currently in development for F Gary Gray, has been brought in to "retool the script under the supervision of Luessenhop". News that she's bringing back Chop Top has been made up by us....It's eighteen months since Twisted Pictures caught the Texas Chainsaw Massacre rights after Platinum Dunes dropped them. Since then the saw has been quietly idling, with rumblings of progress here and there, but Leatherface 3D has just revved fully into action with the announcement of its potential director, John Luessenhop. There's still a suggestion in that old 3D/threequel-type moniker that this is a follow up to Marcus Nispel's 2003 remake and Jonathan Liebesman's 2006 prequel, but most indications seem to be that this is another scratch-starting reboot. Previous reports...

The director of “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and “Step Up 2: The Streets” and “Step Up 3D“, Jon Chu, has been chosen by Paramount Pictures to direct G.I. Joe 2. Chu takes over directing duties from Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy“) who won’t be returning to direct the sequel following a barrage of negative press during the release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Chu was recently confirmed as being on the directors shortlist for the project, sharing a place alongside Jaume Collet-Serra (“Unknown“) and F Gary Gray (“Law Abiding Citizen“). Speaking about his possible appointment, Chu openly expressed his interest in the project:
The one thing I felt was missing from the last Joe movie was the power of the punch. You want Joe to be tough. They are fun, but they are tough. I feel that you don’t want to make Joe too kidsie.

I'm told that Paramount Pictures has chosen Jon M. Chu to direct G.I. Joe 2, the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Chu just made the studio a pile of dough with Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The competition came down to Chu and Gary Gray. Production will begin in the fall. Chu is repped by Wme and Principato Young. I'm told they are working out his deal, but that he's been told he is the choice. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. The next task will be to figure out which cast members are returning. I've heard the studio is starting with Channing Tatum, and trying to work out a deal for him to reprise.

I’ve been waiting for the announcement of a Sam Cooke biopic for years but I’m still estatic to hear that the next best thing could be on the cards with filmmaker Julien Temple set to document the life of soul legend Marvin Gaye. Temple has earnt critical respect in the past both in the film and music industry for his portrayals of iconic punk outfits The Clash and The Sex Pistols and has also directed feature films such as Bullet and Earth Girls Are Easy.
Screen Daily report that Temple is to tackle Sexual Healing (or Midnight Love – the site can’t seem to decide) but either way a title taken from Marvin Gaye’s final recording which the film is set to focus around. The sequel to G.I. Joe is being lined up for a 2012 release and there are surprising candidates to direct…
After the critical mauling that the first G.I. Joe movie got, with some justification, there was a feeling that Paramount would act to sort the inevitable sequel out, and thus prolong the franchise.
Things started well. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the scribes behind Zombieland, were hired to pen the script. Then, it was confirmed that Stephen Sommers wasn't to return to direct the sequel, unsurprising, given the rumours of unrest on the first film. It's nothing against Stephen Sommers, but a change behind the camera would be no bad thing for the franchise.
And thus we arrive here, at the point when directors start to get linked with the new film. The shortlist, though, might not feature who you think.

Film-maker who immortalised the Sex Pistols on screen is now set to tackle the life of the troubled soul legend
He has already immortalised the story of the Sex Pistols on screen and handed us what many consider to be the definitive document on the life of the Clash's Joe Strummer. Now Julien Temple looks set to take on another musical legend: troubled soul singer Marvin Gaye.
According to Screen Daily, Temple's film is titled either Midnight Love, the name of Gaye's final 1982 album, or Sexual Healing, the title of the LP's stand-out single (there seems to be some confusion in the original report). The project will mark the first time that film-makers have been given official permission to bring the singer's story to the big screen, though directors such as F Gary Gray and Cameron Crowe have tried and failed in the past. Producer Jean-Luc Van Damme said it...

The 2009 Summer smash, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was good, hammy entertainment. Starring Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Christopher Eccleston and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film was a great carbon copy of the cartoon series on the big screen. It got some stick but then what film doesn’t?
The film wasn’t without it’s troubles though, namely the onslaught of negative press in the run up to release and the backlash against director Stephen Sommers, no wonder the guy didn’t want to hang around for the sequel right?
So now Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have a large, director-shaped hole in the sequel, G.I. Joe 2. But according to reports it’s a hole that could be just about filled!

Jaume Collet-Serra ("Unknown"), F Gary Gray ("The Italian Job"), and Jon Chu ("Step Up 2 The Streets") are all candidates to helm the sequel to "G.I. Joe" for Paramount Pictures reports Latino Review.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland") penned the script for the follow-up to the 2009 live-action adaptation of the classic 80's toy and cartoon line. Stephen Sommers helmed that film.
The site also reports that Marvel Studios have commissioned scribes Stephen McFeely & Christopher Markus to pen a sequel to this Summer's "Captain America: The First Avenger".
The pair penned the upcoming feature which is predominantly set in the 1940's. The sequel would take place after the events of "The Avengers", best guess is the 'Bucky as Winter Soldier' subplot would also come into play.

Since Stephen Sommers dropped out of the directors chair for the G.I. Joe movie sequel Paramount Studios has been trying to find someone to fill his shoes. It doesn't really matter to me who takes on the sequel at this point, becuase the movie franchise for G.I. In fairness, it’s like asking who wants to get made fun of for the next four years. But, in fairness to the fairness, it’s also asking who wants to be even more rich for the next forever.
Paramount has a couple of ideas on who should take over what will surely become the G.I. Joe franchise (oh franchise, I remember when I liked the word).
Here’s the list. Be warned, it’s short and lacking something that rhymes with smalent [Latino Review]:
Jaume Collet Serra (House of Wax, Orphan, Unknown)
F Gary Gray (Be Cool, Law Abiding Citizen)
John Chu (Step Up 2 The Streets, Step Up 3D, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never)

While many weren’t too keen on Stephen Summer’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the film did gross enough to get a sequel. It was early-January we reported Stephen Summers wasn’t going to direct the sequel (here) after it was thought he would. Nothing has been heard lately about possible directors, but Lation Review is hearing a few names being mentioned. Those names include John Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Step Up 3D), Jaume Collet Serra (Unkown), F Gary Gray (Set It Off). There’s now word on how close any of these directors are in negotiations, and more names could be added.

It is hardly breaking news to say that video game adaptations often struggle as films.
Everything from Super Mario Bros, through Street Fighter to Doom has struggled both critically and commercially, with even seemingly bankable fare like Prince of Persia misfiring.
Kane & Lynch, a third person shooter about two death row inmates who break out for a big bank job was hoped to be the project that would break the curse of the game adaptation, but this has now hit a director-related snag.
Patrick Alessandrin (District 13: Ultimatum) was attached to direct Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx, with shooting starting next month. According to the La Times, Alessandrin is now off the project and the producers are trying to find a replacement director.
F Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen, Be Cool) and Wayne Kramer (Crossing Over, The Cooler) were previously considered and are now back in the mix, as is Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua.

Many films have difficulties on their way to the screen, with deals falling through and actors becoming attached then drifting away again. But it’s beginning to look like the universe just doesn’t want the movie adaptation of video game Kane & Lynch to make it to the screen, as yet another director – District 13: Ultimatum’s Patrick Alessandrin – has left the project. It all seemed to be going so well earlier: Kane & Lynch boasted an intriguing action concept about two death row inmates who escape from prison and get to work on a big bank job to help one of their families. And the game offered brand recognition to boot. Plus, the producers were able to secure Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx for the leads. But finding a director has been another story. Some news on the violent videogame adaptation Kane & Lynch has surfaced recently. Having lost original director Simon Crane due to creative differences the producers have been on the lookout for someone to step in.
Lot’s of names had been circling the project including Wayne Kramer and Roger Donaldson. The hunt for a new director seemed to have been orchestrated by stars Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx who have worked tirelessly to keep the project alive. F Gary Gray’s name has surfaced as a sure-fire winner with one of the reasons being him having already worked with Foxx on Law Abiding Citizen.
The game has a number of stand out action scenes and with Gray having helmed the likes of The Negotiator in the past as well as the less impressive Italian Job remake it seems that on paper at least he is a perfect fit for the job.
