Cinematographer Jay Keitel, a CalArts alum, credits his cinematic sensibilities to his time in experimental filmmaking and animation. Such background pushes him to go beyond traditional narrative form. In Amy Seimetz’s sophomore feature “She Dies Tomorrow,” (bowing across virtual cinemas this weekend) about a woman (Kate Lyn Sheil) certain she is living her final hours, he got to dive into abstract visuals and unorthodox lighting choices for powerful sensorial stimulation.
“There’s this foreboding feeling that a lot of people started to feel after the 2016 election,” said Keitel. “Amy wanted to talk about fear, anxiety, and isolation.” He previously collaborated with Seimetz on her directorial debut “Sun Don’t Shine,” the Starz series “The Girlfriend Experience,” and the short film “When We Lived in Miami.”
Multi-color washes illuminate the characters’ faces as they each have a terrifying realization served as one of the most effective artistic decisions, as these evoke great dreadfulness and heighten tension.

It was a few years back now that writer-director Richard Gale created a legitimate online phenomenon with his short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With The Extremely Inefficient Weapon. The tale of an ordinary man pursued around the world for years by a curse embodied in the form of a white-faced apparition who beats him (over and over and over again) with a spoon, the short film played pretty much every genre film festival around the world before racking up a massive 28 million views on YouTube. the conceit of the piece, for those unfamiliar, is that the short was presented as a very long trailer for a non-existent movie. And now Gale is actually making that movie.Titled Ginosaji: The Horribly Slow Murderer With The...

Let's face it. Just because we walk upright and possess the power of reason (well at least some of us do) doesn't mean that we're any better than most of the creatures in our animal kingdom. The only hitch? Animals only kill when they have to, but humans? We're just looking for a reason.

Fantastic Fest Announces List Of Short Films which includes must sees ‘Cop Hard’ and ‘Infernal Nuns’
The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.

In a bizarre case of life imitating art a student protestor in Chile last week expressed his displeasure at the current state of Chile's education system by dressing up as the villain from Richard Gale's short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With The Extremely Inefficient Weapon and bashing away on a Chilean special forces vehicle with a spoon. Uploaded to YouTube July 28th following a student protest march this appears to be 100% legitimate - the account it was posted from has been active for over a year - and is bizarre, hilarious, and a weirdly effective political statement. You can check both the Chilean video and the short film the character is taken from below....

Director Richard Gale created a genuine cult phenomenon with his short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With The Extremely Inefficient Weapon. The epic tale of an ordinary man pursued around the globe for years by a demonic killer who simply smacks him with a spoon over and over and over again, the film traveled the international festival circuit scooping awards virtually everywhere it went before eventually being posted on YouTube by Gale, where it has since been viewed more than four and a half million times. So Gale is doing the sensible thing: He's bringing the spoon killer back.
Spaghetti Dinner of the Damned isn't a true sequel though both of the original characters are back. No, they're doing something different here. Gale has instead created a series titled Ask Jack in which viewers can ask the original film's lead character questions he will answer while being beaten with a spoon.

Winner of 12 film festival awards, Richard Gale's short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon tells the epic story of one man's encounter with what could be the most relentless murderer of all time. Based on an idea for a short comedy sketch, the concept was expanded into a mini-epic... a faux-movie trailer with a 10-minute running time, for a feature film with an alleged running time of over nine hours. Starring Paul Clemens (The Beast Within), Brian Rohan (Criticized), Fay Kato, Melissa Paladino and Mike Kacey. Due to the vast number of locations and sequences, the short film required 22 days of shooting (more shooting days than on his feature film The Proposal!) Accomplished with a small cast and crew, the film takes place all over the world, but was shot entirely in Southern California, and by utilizing a greenscreen set up in the director's living room.

One of the great things about going to an international film festival like Spain’s Sitges (see previous Sitges post here) is that it always becomes a case of “old home week.” For example, everywhere I turn here I bump into someone who has been on the “fest circuit” this year, such as filmmakers like Book Of Blood’s John Harrison, Grace’s Paul Solet and shorts writer/director Richard Gale (The Incredibly Slow Murderer With The Extremely Inefficient Weapon) or fest programmers such as Toronto-based Todd Brown or distributors like Stephanie Trepanier, who runs Montreal´s Evocative Films and worked with me on Fantasia for many editions. It really makes you feel comfortable being in foreign lands when you can mingle with old friends no matter where you go.

Though festival screenings will continue for a couple more days last night marked the last film to premiere at the 2009 edition of PiFan and, along with that, the official awards selection and distribution of awards. And it’s pretty safe to say that closing night belonged to Indonesia with both Indonesian films playing in competition picking up awards while the festival’s third and final film from Indonesia - Merantau - closed things off to a hugely positive audience response. I’ll start with the short film winners, since that was the jury I was on.
Richard Gale’s The Horribly Slow Murderer With The Extremely Inefficient Weapon was the big winner in the shorts competition, taking both the Citizen’s Choice Award and the jury-awarded Best Short prize. And he accepted both wins with passably good Korean, too. Taking home Best Korean Short was Jung Yu Mi’s stellar animated short film Dust Kid,...

If you haven’t already realized from the existence of this blog, I love short films. I love watching them, I love making them, I love reading about them, I love everything about them. I truly believe that they are the more difficult to make than their feature-length brethren; they have to tell a complete story in under an hour, and in many cases less than a quarter of that. This is why I am always thrilled when directors feature their (or others’) shorts among the DVD supplements of their movies. Below you’ll find a few of my favorites.
Criticized (on the Seed DVD)
Yes, I agree that Uwe Boll is the Ed Wood of our time, but like Wood, he has excellent taste in other people’s films. When he chose to include Richard Gale’s Criticized, one of the best genre shorts ever, on his Seed disc,...

It’s been an insomnia inducing start to Fantasia’s thirteenth year. The opening night screenings had no noteworthy horror entries, so Paul and I spent the evening reconnecting with festival regulars, watched some non-genre movies, and plotted the next three weeks of cinematic mayhem. On Friday, after a rest-free three hours of sleep, we soldiered through a painful midnight screening, and are already feeling delirious, just two days in. This is going to be our sixth year covering the fest, and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
First, a little bit of bookkeeping. In addition to this blog, you can also follow us on Twitter, under @dreadfantasia. Also, if our under slept ramblings don’t satisfy your taste for intelligent movie writing, we recommend you check out Kier-La Janisse’s official Fantasia blog. FX artist turned director Dean Jones got in touch with comments and a couple of exclusive photos from a promotional video (see below) for his upcoming sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 2003 Toolbox Murders remake. You can also have a look at that promo clip for the movie, titled Tbk: The Toolbox Murders, at the bottom of this page.
The new film picks up as the previous movie’s survivors, Nell and Stephen, continue their night of hell when they’re rushed to the nearby Hollywood Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, detectives Cole and Barnes coordinate with a hard-nosed Lapd criminal profiler to uncover the disfigured killer’s origins, leading to a shocking revelation involving Old Hollywood’s seedy underground and one doctor’s secret past.

Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Red West and Brian Krause topline Tbk: The Toolbox Murders , the sequel to 2003's Tobe Hooper-directed remake written by Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. There have been many rumors over the last two years as to who was going to be involved in the film. Ultimately, it is Dean Jones, a Hollywood FX vet, who will write and direct this time with Richard Gale producing. The pair are currently in pre-production, according to an official site which reveals a plot synopsis and more: Picking up directly after the events Tobe Hooper's 2003 version of The Toolbox Murders; Tbk intensifies the terrifying exploration into one of Hollywood's most twisted and morbid serial killers in the annals of American history. The “Really Scary Shorts” program in last year’s Dead Channels Festival of Fantastic Film featured Richard Gale’s Criticized, winner of—count ‘em—15 film festival awards, including Best Short Film at Dead Channels 2007. With Criticized, Gale proved once and for all that it’s the little things in life that matter in a horror movie. In his follow-up—The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon—Gale shifts from the office desk paperclip holder to the kitchen cutlery drawer. Already at its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest last month, The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon won a special jury prize and saw its equally popular West Coast premiere in this year’s Dead Channels’ “Fantastic Short Films” program. At this point I have to officially crown Richard Gale as the reigning king of “object horror.”...

For those of you who either didn’t read my Seed DVD review or did and just couldn’t help yourselves anyway, chances are you’ve seen the short film that came as part of the DVD package, Richard Gale’s “Criticized”. Not a bad little short, if a bit heavy-handed, but it showcased a filmmaker with promise.
Now Gale is back with another short that is certainly leaning closer to comedy than “Criticized” did: “The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon”, which will premiere during Fantastic Fest’s Short Fuse programming. The film is being described as an "epic story of one man’s encounter with what could be the most relentless murderer of all time". Sounds like fun!
Fangoria got their hands on an exclusive pic from it, which unfortunately does not showcase the titular weapon (I really want to know what it is!), but that...
