The National Film Registry just granted immortality to 25 classic films. Every year, the Library of Congress chooses another class to be preserved for posterity, and this year’s group includes some major blockbusters like “Terminator 2,” “Home Alone,” and “Apollo 13.”
To be eligible, a film must be at least 10 years old and carry what the library considers to be “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance,” in consultation with National Film Preservation Board members and other experts.
The list now stands at 875 remarkable films. If you’d like to nominate your favorite film for preservation, just fill out this form.

The late Chadwick Boseman was widely expected to win a posthumous Academy Award at the 2021 Oscars — so much so, perhaps, that Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins shifted the run-of-show to place Best Actor at the end of the ceremony instead of Best Picture. But the history-making moment was not to be: “The Father” star Anthony Hopkins was an upset winner in the Best Actor category on Sunday night, capitalizing on late-breaking momentum that likely pushed him over the top.
Hopkins was not in attendance at the Oscars. Early Monday morning, the legendary star did post an acceptance speech to Instagram in which he paid tribute to the legacy of Boseman.
“Well, here I am in my homeland in Wales, and at 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. And very grateful to the academy, and thank you, and...

With his Best Actor Oscar nomination for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Chadwick Boseman is the first actor posthumously nominated for an Academy Award since Heath Ledger.
Ledger was nominated and won Best Supporting Actor at the 2009 ceremony for “The Dark Knight.” It’s widely anticipated Boseman will also win an Oscar at the 93rd annual Academy Awards in April for his “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” performance.

Throughout Oscars history, there have been multiple people nominated for an Academy Award after their death. Before Boseman, the most recent posthumous nominee was “Fences” playwright August Wilson, who received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2017 ceremony. Before Wilson, Walt Martin received a nomination for Best Sound Mixing for “American Sniper” at the 2015 ceremony.
The last posthumous Oscar winner was producer Gil Friesen, who won Best Documentary at the 2013 ceremony for “20 Feet From Stardom.”

An unusually high volume of posthumous Golden Globes nominations today. Aside from the much expected Best Actor nom for the late Chadwick Boseman For Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, there was also a nom for Jack Fincher, who received his first screen credit 17 years after his death. The nominated screenwriter is the father of David Fincher, who saw through his father’s vision and turned it into the Gary Oldman-starrer Mank for Netflix. Jack Fincher made his living as a journalist and essayist who published pieces in the Saturday Evening Review, The Smithsonian and other publications. After retiring, he turned to crafting a script about the behind the scenes on a movie he loved, Citizen Kane. He chose the evolution of Herman Mankiewicz from a tipsy intellectual script doctor to a man who found his courage in authorship on a movie that took on his benefactor, William Randolph Hearst.

It’s hard to know much exaggeration is used in movies about crazy Suth’un politics, when some of the serious movies resemble Julius Caesar with mint juleps. This true story is about an old-school populist Louisiana governor who falls for a nationally-known stripper, the famous Blaze Starr, and is told from the stripper’s Pov. Paul Newman is at his late-career best, and Lolita Davidovich lights up the screen. The governor can get away with most anything except what he wants to do most — pass some color-blind laws about hiring and voting.

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...

The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave pulled a five finger discount at the 2014 Indie Spirit Awards grabbing hardware in the Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography categories. Apart from the larceny in the Best Doc category, the winners in the above mention category (excluding Bobbitt’s work) and the double win pairing of Leto and McConaughey along with Cate Blanchett’s perf win in Blue Jasmine will likely repeat itself less than 24 hours later at tomorrow’s Academy Awards celebrations obviously begging many to ponder the following: who needs the 86th Academy Awards when we have the Indie Spirit Awards? While today’s most pleasurable wins come from the truly indie kudos for Best First Feature (Ryan Coogler for Frutivale Station) the John Cassavetes award for Chad Hartigan’s This is Martin Bonner, and the Piaget Producers Award to Ain’t Them Bodies Saints...

The Academy has made an exception to its usual rules and determined that three filmmakers are entitled to nominations for the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” AMPAS said Wednesday. The film was nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category last Thursday, with the notation that the names of its nominees had yet to be determined. After examining the work done by the film’s two credited producers, Caitrin Rogers and the late Gil Friesen, the executive committee of the Academy’s Documentary Branch ruled that both producers should receive nominations, along with director Morgan Neville. Oscar rules in the doc-feature category specify that.

At her home in New Jersey, she'd just finished her regular morning meditation and settled in to watch some of the Oscar nominations on TV. And at one point, she says, "I just screamed! My husband was in the other room and said, 'What? What?' Now they can put 'Oscar nominee' next to my name along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Darlene Love is one of the greatest singers of all time, but many of the hit songs she performed on weren't actually released under Love's name.
As a background singer in the 1960s, Love's voice could be heard on tracks by Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Dione Warwick and Aretha Franklin. She also sang the No. 1 hit "He's A Rebel" for Phil Spector, a record that the eccentric producer wound up crediting to The Crystals. (Love also provided lead vocals for "He's Sure The Boy I Love," another song that Spector gave to The Crystals.)
"Nobody put the camera on the background singers who were singing," Love told HuffPost Entertainment. "It was on Stevie Wonder. It was on Elton John. It was on whoever was the lead singer out front. We were 20 feet from stardom."

"20 Feet From Stardom" is an exceptional music documentary that shines the spotlight on some wonderfully talented backup singers -- gifted musicians who were never fully able to make that short walk to the front of the stage to become successful solo artists. Drawn from over five decades of talented artists, along with interviews from superstars like Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, the work joins a pantheon of other exceptional music documentaries that do more than simply present a series of tunes, but focus on some of the most intense and important aspects of creative expression, of the vagaries of "success," and the challenges and luck involved that far supersede anything as fundamental as talent.

Aretha. Frank. Michael. Stevie. Say those names and any music fan will know what legend your speaking of. But few know the voices behind those superstars. The documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” explores the nameless vocal talent, the background singer, that have had millions singing to classic songs for decades. Director Morgan Neville, who has directed a number of critically-acclaimed music documentaries, was called upon by Gil Friesen, a music industry veteran from A&M Records, to explore the world of the background singer since nothing had been done in the past. What became the focus after Neville began interviewing talents like Darlene Love, was “how black voices came in and changed pop music over the past 50 years.”...

Los Angeles — In the span of American pop music, few performers have gone as unrecognized as the backup vocalists who harmonize and contextualize the songs of many a heralded lead musician. With "20 Feet From Stardom," some of the most notable finally get their due, but more than a tribute, the film is a recognition of the talent and sacrifice that many of these vocalists have invested in often challenging careers.
With a documentary career that's richly profiled the likes of Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Rolling Stones and Pearl Jam, Emmy-award winning director Morgan Neville brings an impressive wealth of talent and depth of experience to the project, enhanced by the decades-long perspective of producer and former A&M music exec Gil Friesen, who died late last year.
